(In my case shrimp and grits) was NOT GOOD. And don't get me wrong, it wasn't a horrible flavor, but the flavors it did have were terrible. First the grits are not smooth at all. Like they aren't super course but they definitely could have been cooked down more. And they had little seasoning. And that's being generous. Then the "creole" sauce on top? Tasty food, great ambience, friendly service. Celebrated a "say yes to the dress" moment for brunch with my girl and some of her tribe! We brought our own fun and took plenty of pictures. Our party ordered shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles, stuffed French toast, R&R Gumbo, and the classic breakfast. No complaints from anyone. Pretty cool place. It is on the second floor. I recommend making reservations since it's pretty popular. We came for brunch and even though there were plenty of tables open inside, none were available so we had to sit outside. It was pretty hot. They did seem to be a little disorganized and seemed to have trouble even getting us the outside table. We got mimosas in a variety of flavors. We all enjoyed them. The wait for the food was about 45 minutes which was too long, frankly. Like I said, it was hot and I was getting cranky. No other complaints on the food by the remainder of the party. Would I agree with the price point? We went back to Roots and Recently for brunch today. It was amazing as usual. We had reservations for 6 people and only waited long enough for the table to be set. Everyone loved their food and felt stuffed after ordering beignets for dessert. The drinks were excellent and the food was hot and ready in a timely manner. The service was a bit slow due to short staff, but it's the way restaurants are running post covid. We didn't take food pictures but this is what we had. This place is a perfect spot for a nice date or to catch up with some friends. The building is historic so if you appreciate architecture; you would love it. Parking is on the street or there is a parking lot that you can pay for. The service was great. For dinner we ordered the pork belly & scallops and the filet mignon. My partner said the scallops were wonderful but they were sitting on a bed of basically uncooked beans. The beans were hard and could not even be poked through. The pork belly was nicely cooked but came with what tasted like store bought BBQ sauce, and did not pair well with the celeriac purée underneath. My filet was sad. Being so gristly, we returned It and got a new steak. the second one wasn't gristly but had absolutely no flavor. no spices no salt, nothing but a slab of meat. we were informed the chef was new and just "put It on there." maybe the chef is not ready to be in a restaurant that charges $60 for a filet. First off, the service was amazing. Megan was informative and attentive. Atmosphere was different but very nice. Creative cocktails on the menu and my wife found two she was very fond of. The "basic b" was one. I'm a beer guy so..... Mediterranean pasta was quite tasty and my wife had the stuffed flounder. She also said hers was tasty but was quite surprised to have to deal with bones throughout the meal. Highlight of the meal was desert. Key lime tart was the best we have ever had. So it went like this. I had a reservation at 7:45 PM. I was not seated until 8:03 PM. The restaurant is busy. Cool. I scoped the place. Nice. Cute art. Majority Caucasian patrons, 3 African American patrons as well. If this specific information matters to you, use it. If it doesn't, don't. After being seated it takes another 9+ minutes for someone to come to the table and take my drink order. The waitress comes back to the table(without my drink), and by this time I have my whole order ready. I run off my choices and she's like ohhhhh. We don't have that. ** I was given the wrong menu that I've been looking at for at least 20 min!! ** I'm given the right menu and it took forever for her to come back. I grab another waitress and give her my order including appetizer and the drink I haven't received yet (but ppl who were seated after me had received theirs). It's now 8:30 and I JUST got my cocktail from the original waitress. I let her know I spoke with another server and updated her on my choices as to what I ordered. I acknowledged to her that I realize she's busy and asked her to come right back so I could order my entree. It was at least 15 minutes before I saw her again. I hate it here. 8:41 PM by this time I have grabbed a bus lady for my next drink submittal (also asked to speak to a manager but she attempted to take control of the situation and get what I needed. Consumers be aware. We consider ourselves to be lovers of fine restaurants and dining experiences. Roots and Revelry did not come close to meeting the standards that we have become accustomed to. Traci, the manager on duty, was aloof, and based upon her actions, she's proven herself to possess limited integrity. During a Saturday brunch experience, her actions resulted in our our order being botched. She brought one entrée out approximately 15 minutes before the other. This, of course, resulted in a very subpar dining experiences for a party of two. Traci then blamed the server for her mistake. When the second entrée arrived at the table, it was obviously a rush job, which resulted in a dish that was not edible. Our server was apologetic, and she offered to comp our meals. She even provided us with two additional brunch beverages (spirits). I asked her if she was certain that she did not want for us to pay for the beverages, and she said said that she was comping everything, including the beverages. She went on to tell us that Traci was the owners girlfriend and was not aware of what she was doing. I found the fact that they both spoke negatively about one another unbecoming. However, we sat at our table for approximately another hour as we waited out the rain. This occurred on a Saturday afternoon. To my surprise, five days later, I received a call from a number that I didn't recognize. The call was followed by a text from Traci, who identified herself as the manager at Roots and Revelry. Her text: "This is Traci the Manager from Roots and Revelry. I'd like to close out your open ticket. We would prefer to avoid an official report with the Birmingham Police." Update Of course, I called her back, and to say she was amplified would be a mild description of her interactions during our phone conversation. I politely informed her that I knew exactly who she was, and I shared that she was accurate in saying that we were recently at the restaurant. I then shared that I was perplexed by the need to settle a ticket since we were told that we would be compensated by the server. I asked if our server was present and if we could all speak. The server was there, and she denied stating that would be comped. Instead, she stated that she was only comping the two beverages provided after we notified her about the second entrée being inedible. How very sad... but what would you expect when a manager is forcing the hand of an employee? I yielded, as I am not one to banter. I asked how would you like for me to settle the charges. After clarifying exactly what items I would be charged for, the amount was determined. I then reminded them that we also had coffee and that it should be included. I then submitted the payment. Debt settled! Traci sarcastically asked if I'd like to leave a tip. I declined, of course. I truly hope that Traci, the owners current girlfriend, feels a sense of accomplishment. I'm glad that I was able to save the Birmingham Police Department a little time because she was certain that we would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The funny thing is that I documented the experience on the Open Table app prior to being contacted by Traci. It's almost laughable to think that we had our integrity questioned after being assured that the meal was being compensated because of poor service and quality. All this for an amount less than $50.00. It would do restaurateurs well to understand that diners don't make the rules and no diner enters an establishment hoping to receive poor service in an effort to receive something for nothing. In fact, the opposite is true diners enter understanding that they will not only pay for meals, but they will most likely provide a suitable gratuity. I guess I shouldn't be surprised by today's interaction with Traci. When stupidity is empowered, responsibility and accountability often escape. The fact that both the manager and server spoke negatively to guests about one another provides an adequate basis for understanding that the root of this issue is in-house communication. read more

We have been going to this place for about three months now. The parking outside is a little awkward but don't be alarmed they have valet! Once you get up to the rooftop the ambience is great old vintage plus featured art all over the wall. The service sometimes can be a little slow but the food makes up for it! If you're going for brunch 1000% get the shrimp and grits the salsa on it makes it! Steer away from the duck hash!! For dinner We would recommend starting with any of their fresh cocktails, or a glass of wine. This was my first time coming here and I must say the aura was so nice! This was the most exquisite taste of chicken and waffles I've ever had. It is made with lemongrass and ginger and it was interesting, I actually really liked it. Typically I would get a mimosa, but I am currently not drinking alcohol, so I just had the coffee on the side to pair with it, and it really brought a balance (But my friend said that the mimosas were really good lol) They offer free valet, which is convenient. WAITED FOREVER TO GET COLD & SALTY FOOD! It's been a fantastic restaurant, but my husband and I decided not to go back again. (Their excuse was they hired a NEW CHEF!) We had beignets as an appetizer and two main dishes. 'Beignets' are normally too hot to touch it, but those were room temperature. Main dishes came out over an hour later. 'Duck hash' was too salty and dry, and 'Gumbo' was plain and not hot enough as a soup. As you can see in the picture rice pile has crumbled and soup was everywhere on the dish. We always sat at the bar to get away from people, but the bar area was blocked and they squeezed us in a tight dining area. The restaurant was too crowded and loud. It is Birmingham Reataurant Week 2019 and the list of participating restaurants are Awesome and I would love to take a visit to all of them. However, not possible so I decided to go with Roots and Revelry because I have never eaten here and I loved the food and beverage options. The restaurant is intimate and I like the table setup and lighting. The staff was nice and very attentive. We were served our food and checked on periodically. My friend and I both had the Fried chicken (crispy skin), Red skin mash (good size pieces of garlic cloves and love the lumps of potato), Sauteed spinach (seasoned with a kick of what appeared to be red pepper flakes) and natural jus on the side. We went in different directions on the drinks. He had the Strawberry fields (he wanted a little more of the strawberry flavor) and I had the Zen garden (enjoy the blackberry pieces throughout). We sat on the very cute patio which has a great atmosphere. Our server was very helpful and nice. She was able to give us good recommendations on menu items and she talked me into the chicken and waffles. THEY WERE SO GOOD. The syrup had almost a lemongrass flavor added to it (loved it). We came here for dinner on the deck outside since the weather was great. Wow! We were sooooooo disappointed!!!!!! You might as well plan on waiting for 4 hours. The food was so salty it made me gag. Good lord. This place was stellar. We were seated outside on a beautiful sunny day. There was plenty of space between tables which I appreciated. We started with the fried okra that was so tasty. Next I had the fried green tomato caprese salad with a basil aioli and balsamic glaze. It was so good as well. The fried green tomatoes had a light breading that was super crunchy.
