So, after almost 5 months of coming to Roots, I felt it was time to review. I initially found Roots through Groupon, and after I was just looking for a way to relax after my countless hours at my desk job, I knew I needed some kind of Yoga practice to re-enter my life. I had intended to give a bunch of studios a try to see what I liked, but I honestly felt that my search was just meant to be--I didn't even bother looking anywhere else after I started coming to Roots. My very first class was with Ginger who runs the studio with several other instructors. I felt a bit intimidated after being away from the practice for so long, and especially it happened so that my class was unusually full. But they offer so many classes throughout the week it's easy to find what works for you. I work a pretty long day--so I like being able to sign up for what works for me, and being able to reschedule at my convenience. The 6 hour cancel window is super! You manage everything on Mindbody from scheduling classes to purchasing more classes. I have also had classes with Monique, Karen, and Tina and I can't say enough good things about each of them. They each have their own unique way of teaching, yet you still leave feeling you have accomplished your purpose. You are always encouraged to take it to your level, whether you are just beginning or you have been practicing a long time. The Heated Classes are some of my favorites--note it is NOT Bikram Yoga hot. Rather just feels like a nice hot day. It just feels great to have a community of good energy and a place to come where we are regularly encouraged to "dump your day" or "get your day started." It feels great. So Ginger and the Team: Keep it up. This has been an amazing lifestyle change for me and I have kept with it because you all have been so supportive on this journey to a better self. I moved to the Boston area from NC about 2 years ago now and for a while I had a hard time finding a good yoga studio up here, especially one that offered warm or hot yoga which is my favorite. Then I stumbled upon a Roots yoga groupon a few months into being here and fell absolutely in love. I've been regularly going every week for over a year and a half now. There are so many great things to say, the studio is great, they often offer class packs at a discounted price on holidays, you can't go wrong with the any of the teachers - they are all fantastic and so kind. I could go on. In regards to the yoga itself, I typically do the Heated Flow classes and I always leave feeling fantastic. It really helps to get rid of tightness and increase my flexibility and balance. If I miss a week I can tell a big difference in how my body feels. I find the review claiming this studio "hurts clients" (then cites an example with an elder in the class) to be just ridiculous. Sometimes instructors will add some abs or more difficult poses into the mix - I personally love this as it can make it more challenging and a workout. If something is too much for you - simply don't do it or rest in child's pose. Instructors always stress that it is your practice and you have to listen to your body. Literally the only downside is that certain classes at ideal times (like Monday 5:45) get completely booked up and it can be tight quarters. BUT, this is no different anywhere else - trust me, if a class is great and at an ideal time, the odds are its going to be tight no matter what/where you are. Anyone who has tried Pure Barre in Burlington or other yoga studios would say the same. read more

I have been taking the prenatal yoga class at Roots throughout my pregnancy. I LOVE IT! The studio is adorable. It's cozy and clean and I instantly feel relaxed when I step inside. I have taken yoga classes before becoming pregnant but this prenatal class was my first experience at Roots. I couldn't have felt more comfortable at my first class. The instructor is friendly, patient, and has a wonderful sense of humor. I have gotten to know other expecting moms in the class, too. Regardless of your previous yoga experience, you will enjoy the class and benefit from the gentle workout. You do not need to have any previous yoga background to participate in this class but it's fine if you do. The instructor always checks in before we start to see how we are feeling and what we want to work on. She encourages us to listen to our bodies. As I have gotten further along in my pregnancy, she will show me ways to modify certain poses. When I leave class I feel refreshed, relaxed, and connected to my growing belly! I also sleep great on Wednesdays after my class because my body feels good! Ginger and Valerie have been wonderful to work with. They genuinely care about everyone they meet at Roots. I will continue to be in touch with the other expecting moms in my class and instructors and I hope to sign up for more classes once I deliver. There is a great little coffee shop (True North) in the same plaza so you should take advantage of a treat before or after your yoga class. I hope you enjoy Roots as much as I do! read more

I found out about Roots through a friend and being not flexible at all was terrified walking in the first time. I am SO HAPPY I chose to try Roots! I started with the Intro to Yoga workshop because I had no foundation in yoga and I fell in love from day one. It is warm and inviting. Ginger and her staff make every effort to make everyone feel welcome. I have been lucky enough to take several classes with different instructors, and all of them have been amazing. I am still a beginner and no one has made me feel like I don't belong. I always leave feeling confident and ready to face my day. The staff are so approachable and always willing to show you how to do something different to help you grow in your practice. They are also great about pushing you when you need it. Recently I was going through a difficult time and I can truly say that going to my class at Roots got me through it. Do not be afraid like I was, if you are new to yoga sign up for the Intro Workshop, you will not regret it. If you are already practicing, try a class at Roots. I had been to several other studios in the area, but from the moment I first entered Roots, it felt like home. The dark, earthy decor, pleasantly dim lighting, visual references to Eastern culture, and the smell of burning incense immediately set the stage for a holistic yoga practice. An environment that doesn't just feel like a workout studio, but is highly to conducive to making a spiritual as well as physical connection, which is for many a large factor in why to practice yoga. I take Ginger's class regularly, and obviously she's great. But I've also had classes and workshops with several of the other instructors and they are all terrific. Roots really fosters a welcoming, authentic, and nonjudgmental environment. You only ever have to do as much or as little as feels right for your body, and over the year that I have been going there (only about once or twice a week) I've noticed a significant improvement to my physical and emotional well being. Roots is one of the best yoga studios I've ever come across. I've been practicing yoga for the last 14 years and am very serious about my practice - it's the one constant I need in my life to keep me grounded. After moving to Wilmington a year and a half ago, one of my girlfriends recommended I try Roots - where Ginger Boermeester came highly recommended. After one class with Ginger, she completely exceeded all of my expectations and surpassed a very high-bar that other teachers have previously set. Ginger is truly gifted - she goes beyond just providing a great workout and truly connects with each and every one of her students. Words cannot express how incredibly grateful I am to have her in my life. I would highly recommend all of Roots classes and am a huge fan of both Ginger and Monique!! Not only are they both incredible teachers (from a technique / flow standpoint), but truly care about their students and make a significant impact on their lives. This is a great little studio. At first, I was a little skeptical when I drove up to it because it is in a rather nondescript strip mall, but the inside of the studio is very cozy. The instructors are all great, they really want to help you learn the poses and get the most our of your yoga practice. The studio as a whole is very focused on the spiritual side of yoga (which I'm not necessarily into), but I always leave feeling as if I have gotten a very good workout. Pros are definitely the range of different classes (vinyasa, power, heated, gentle), and the variety of times (night, mid morning, early morning, etc). The only con is the size of the studio (pretty small), and the fact that the front desk in located in the area we practice in. However, these are minor flaws. The fact that the studio is pretty small hasn't been a problem for me yes, but as the studio grows in popularity (which I'm sure it will!), this may be an issue! read more

I cannot say enough good things about Roots Yoga! The studio is extremely clean and welcoming and the instructors are top notch! Whether you are a complete newbie or have been practicing yoga for years you will definitely find a class (or several classes) that you will fall in love with. The classes are a great balance of physical workout and messages to improve spiritual growth. I always leave Roots yoga feeling better than I did when I entered! The owner (Ginger) works hard to make yoga affordable to everyone. She often runs Groupons for new clients and frequent specials for current clients. With these class passes, it typically works out to about $10/class!!! I have been practicing at Roots Yoga for two years. Because of Roots Yoga, I have experienced significant spiritual growth and made consistent progress in my yoga practice. If you haven't been to Roots yet, it is a must! You will love it! read more

I can't say enough good things about Roots. I had back pain 24 hours a day, and the pain management doctor said I should have cortisone shots, or try yoga. I opted for yoga. I attended a class led by MaryAlice, and the next day, I woke up without pain for the first time in a long while. Over time, the pain has completely disappeared. Ginger, MaryAlice, Deb and Emily all have a high level of expertise, and empathy for individual situations - like my artificial hip. They have each helped me adapt poses so that I can benefit, but without risk of dislocating the hip. Each has a can-do attitude that is infectious, and complements their instructional skills. Although the studio is extremely well kept, to me it is Ginger and her crew - the people - not the surroundings, that have made me evolve from 'yoga is something I have to do to help my back' to an enjoyable activity. read more

I have been taking classes at Roots since January of 2014. The studio had took classes from closed, so I was desperate to find a replacement. A friend recommended Roots. My first class was a 2 hour New Year/ New You Class. I was immediately hooked. I have taken a variety of classes from beginners to yoga flow, and now I am a regular at either Monique's Monday or Ginger's Thursday heated flow class. All the instructors are knowledgeable, they provide good cues, recommend alternatives if the position is beyond your level. Although it is a small studio, and most classes are at full capacity, it is very comfortable and your movement is not restricted in any way. I always leave the classes feeling great! I highly recommend this studio. read more

I started going to Roots Yoga about two years ago looking for a good Pilates class near my new home. Tina's yoga-Pilates class is awesome, and I'd really like if it was offered more often. I tried various yoga classes throughout my 20s, never really taking to it. Since I was already taking the Pilates class at Roots, I decided to give yoga another try and found that I really love their flow classes. I tend to go to Ginger and Stephanie's classes the most, both are wonderful. I agree with previous reviewers that class size needs to be controlled more carefully given the size of the studio. Maybe 16 students tops? Popular classes can easily exceed this, though. The class size is the reason I dropped one star off. read more

I love Roots! I have been practicing yoga for many years now and at Roots for about a year. I recently moved to Medford (instead of convenient Burlington) and continue to practice at this studio at least once a week. I have had the great pleasure of being taught by Ginger, Monique, Stephanie, and Julie and love how each instructor guides the class from beginning to end. The studio may be small but it is the best bang for your buck and I get to see familiar smiling faces every time I go. My favorite part about Roots is how I feel during and after the practice. Not only did I get a great workout but my mind and soul is content and relaxed. I love Roots, and will continue my practice with them. read more

I have been practicing yoga on and off for years, but Roots is the first studio I have been to that I have been comfortable enough with the classes and the instructors to stick with it long term. Heated flow with Ginger is an incredible workout, and each class is challenging enough that I feel myself accomplishing more and growing my practice. The instructors also focus on the importance of breathing and setting intentions, which I appreciate because those have been skimmed over in my past experiences. Honestly the best studio I have ever had the experience of finding. I have never felt so good walking into a space as I do here. The energy is amazing and the instructors are professional and topnotch. Wow. Roots' Teacher Training program turns out such authentic and unique instructors who are passionate about the practice of Yoga. Ginger clearly loves what she does. It shows in all her classes and interactions. She is kind, welcoming, supportive and completely compassionate. I go to Ginger's class every Tuesday evening. I am absolutely in love with this yoga studio. I have been to many other places, and none compare to Roots in Burlington. I have learned how to meditate, breathe, control my stress and have gradually impressed myself with my yoga abilities. Ginger is so attentive with all of her students and makes sure to satisfy everyone's moods and desires during class. I have been going to Roots Yoga for 3 years now and my only complaint is that I can't make it there more often! My personal preference are the heated flow classes. The room is always warm and welcoming and some of the instructors even take requests at the beginning of class making each time feel personalized. One thing I also really appreciate that some people may overlook, are the playlists the instructors put together. It's nice to have a mix of music with actual lyrics as well as the typical "soothing sounds." I always leave feeling calm and centered! read more

I've never done an official yoga class in my life and signed up for Roots as a Groupon and absolutely fell in love. I'm going 2x/week now! You can tell that everyone loves being there and it doesn't matter if you go daily or a newbie-- all that matters is the time you spend for yourself on the mat. Every instructor has their own style and I really believe that what makes it unique-- each one helps you achieve a new pose or even just peace of mind. I found this studio by accident- a family member of Ginger's came into my place of business and mentioned it. Months later when I had decided to try yoga again for the first time in 10yrs I googled local yoga studios and messaged Roots. Ginger's reply was prompt and inviting, so I decided to give it a shot. They were very welcoming, every instructor has been great. I have been away from my practice, but I am coming back soon. My gym offers yoga with my membership, but I am choosing to come back to roots. I would recommend to anyone. read more
