Serious Concerns Regarding Student Safety and Administrative Negligence…read more As a concerned parent, I feel it is necessary to raise serious concerns regarding the ongoing lack of safety protocols and administrative accountability at this school, where my child is currently enrolled. Over the past several months, I have witnessed and documented several troubling incidents involving not only negligence on the part of the administration but also potential endangerment of students. These include: Failure to Vet Adults on Campus: The school has allowed unauthorized adults onto school grounds without conducting proper identification or verification procedures. This has resulted in individuals misrepresenting themselves as parents and engaging in inappropriate behavior, including bullying and harassment of students and other parents. Bullying and Harassment: The school has failed to take adequate steps to prevent or address bullying. Specific individuals, including adults, have repeatedly harassed students, with incidents involving verbal threats and coercion. Despite being verbally banned from campus, these individuals were still allowed to return and continue their behavior without consequence. Involvement of Firearms: There was a reported incident involving firearms on or near school grounds, tied to individuals previously reported for misconduct. This incident was not transparently addressed with the school community, and no apparent disciplinary or legal action was taken against those responsible. Neglect of Mandated Reporting Duties: Concerns have been raised with the school about potential neglect and emotional abuse of students, including my own child. Despite these concerns being reported, the school has failed to follow up or escalate them to Child Protective Services, as required by law under mandatory reporting obligations. Lack of Transparency and Cooperation: As a legal parent, I have been repeatedly denied access to basic information such as incident reports or the opportunity to safely communicate with my child on campus. This has occurred despite involving law enforcement and having legal rights in place. Allegations made by another parent were accepted without proper investigation or due process, leading to further barriers in my involvement with my child's education and well-being. Failure to Uphold Protective Orders: The school has not enforced protective measures that are in place to safeguard students and families involved in these conflicts, further putting children at risk. Pattern of Unsafe Environment: There have been multiple incidents requiring law enforcement and school lockdowns. The frequency of such events points to a larger systemic issue in maintaining a safe and secure learning environment. What is most disheartening is that the administration appears more focused on maintaining the school's public image than protecting the students and addressing serious safety concerns. The failure to act responsibly and transparently has significantly eroded trust within the school community. While I do not wish for my child to be removed from their educational setting, it is ultimately the school's responsibility to ensure all students are safe and protected from harm--physically, emotionally, and socially. I urge the district and relevant oversight bodies to thoroughly investigate the current environment at Rolando Elementary and take immediate steps to implement meaningful reform. I have also communicated with a couple of the other parents who have been negatively impacted by the recent turn of events and encouraged them to take these concerns to the board and even take the right legal avenues to hold the school responsible. The safety and well-being of children must be prioritized above all else.

They care about students as whole people and do a great job supporting both academic growth and social-emotional development. The campus feels safe, inclusive, and well-run. My son came from a wonderful elementary school, but I must say he was overwhelmed with a homework packet which he worked on for 3-4 hours each night. I didn't realize there is a better way to teach children. The project-based learning at HTM is so much better than repetitive- based packets! Last year my sons HTM projects included: Designing a campaign ad for underdeveloped regions that are being overtaken by rebels, writing a letter to their government, collaborating with his group to produce a hand-painted, large scale interactive map complete with home made clay tablets, pyramids, houses, volcanoes, etc, of his chosen region (beautifully done), seting up power-point presentations and videos, writing and producing videos, simulating a home made water cleansing system, explaining his knowlege of earthquakes, demonstrating how to solve math problems, and so much more! All of these projects are shown to the parents in a POL, Presentation of Learning, where the kids dress up in business clothing, (yes, the boys wear ties) and conduct their presentation in front of 8 parents and their teachers. It is so amazing to see how confident, enthusiastic, and tremendously knowledgeable these young kids are are in front of a audience! The parents are allowed to ask questions afterwards and you cannot stump these kids with any question! They know the information inside and out. They are our future leaders! I have a tear in my eye each time I see a presentation. HTM is the best! Project-based learning is how kids should be taught! God bless the creators of all HTM / HTH schools!

This was my child's first school experience after being homeschooled his entire life. It wasn't our first choice. To be honest, when I saw the school in Google, I didn't even give it a second look. We moved from NorCal back to San Diego missing the start of the school year. I was looking to send my son to a private school for football, but missed the start of the season. So my second thought was "he will play next year, let's just find him a school to ease into the transition." So a lot of the "soft" schools like High Tech High and School of Engineering and Technology had a waiting list. Wanting to get my son into school ASAP, we decided on Americas Finest Charter High School. Well everything happens for a reason. The school, staff, and its teachers are AMAZING!! They truly care about these kids future. Now don't get me wrong, nothing in life is perfect. There is good and bad in everything. Your child will only get out what they put in, school or anything in life. But the help and support is there. From our experience, the school counselor Ms. Saucedo, Mr. Poteet (history teacher) and Coach Gab (Math Teacher) work hard on getting these kids to the next level. Once again, your child will only get out what they put in, your child will have to want it. So if your child is looking for a school where they can just go to learn and reach their full potential. Not worry about other nonsense and drama (unless they bring it). I highly recommend sending them here. It worked out so well, our oldest is returning. He is happy there. We spent 3 years at another school in the neighborhood only to find out that this school is so much better and organized! The staff and teachers are so kind and loving and my child is surpassing my expectations with all the knowledge he has gained since his transition. I sure hate that we will be moving to another state and will not be able to attend for the 2014-2015 school year. This school is amazing and we will miss it dearly.
