I would definitely be coming back to dine here and recommend all to check out Roscioli's. Between two people, we ordered a bottle of wine, 1) burrata and anchovies appetizer, 2) "cold cuts" board, 3) meatballs with polenta, 4) carbonara, and 5) poached pear and it was a lot of food! The most memorable was the burrata and carbonara. The burrata is what my dreams are made of. Decadent creaminess with a touch of salt! And, the carbonara was also delectable - cooked al dente and the sauce was the best of its kind I have had. My next visit to Rome will be centred on my ability to secure a couple reservations for dinner at Roscioli's. Seriously. Tips: Reservations are a must. This popular restaurant books up weeks in advance! The sommelier is knowledgeable. Ask for a wine recommendation so you don't get lost in the vast wine menu! Roscioli's provides a complimentary dessert - so if you want a small dessert at the end of the meal, don't order one off of the menu. Here's the thing.. I really don't even want to give Roscioli a rating... because I'm afraid it's already been discovered and I don't want to not be able to get a table next time I come to Rome (or let's get real, tomorrow when I go back for dinner again). They are known for the cabonara, which is creamy perfection, but I cannot hold back my praises for the world's creamiest burrata and most mouth watering pasta: the cacio e pepe (which is four cheese & four peppers). Tip: this place is always booked so make reservations (it has 2 dinner servings- one about 7 and one at 9:30). This was our first stop in Roma. This restaurant is part of a larger business that also has a bakery and gelato just across the street. I must say that the food is amazing. Never had better pasta. The restaurant also doubles up as a deli selling fresh and jarred produce.... So it was somewhat fun to people watch. I booked a reservation here after it was recommended to me and I read reviews. 1. They never answer their phone. I tried calling two days in advance to try to move my reservation sooner but nobody picked up the phone. I called, without exaggerating at least 20 times during the day and never once someone picked the phone. The day of my reservation I tried calling; same thing. Zero answer after 15 attempts. 2. My waiter was a total jerk! When we got there and he asked us what we wanted to drink - but he took 35 minutes to bring us two wine glasses and one bottle; which in my opinion was overpriced. I bought the same bottle at another restaurant for 30€ and here was over 60€. Same exact bottle, same year. 3. When we were trying to decide was to eat he kept making impatience faces to us and the table next to us who was in the same boat of trying to decide what to eat. 4. He got really upset with us because we told him we will have the tuna carpaccio for appetizer and take it from there (which it was due to his attitude that I wasn't convinced on eating there anymore) Took 50 minutes to bring my food which he threw in my table. After we ate it; we were ready to leave and go somewhere else to have dinner. My waiter decided to take 30 minutes to bring us the bill after we asked for it 3 times. Absolute heaven from start to finish! Apparently we are lucky ducks - after visiting the Colosseum, we walked allllll the way to Roscioli in the rain. We walked in just before noon to find the place empty; we didn't know the rules and asked to sit st the bar. The hostess asked if we had a reservation - nop! Perhaps favor smiled on us but we lucked out with the last lunch seating for 12:30, so we took it and left to walk the campo di fiori market. When we came back, it was a zoo. We had to wait to get in the door and watched sad face after sad face leave without winding up with a coveted seat. Right by the door offered a view into the cheese case as well as a view of everyone coming and going. We quickly got an amuse bouche - mozzarella with figs - but it took awhile for us to get a menu or wine list. Never mind - we weren't in a hurry and had the time to enjoy our surroundings. We knew we HAD to have the "Bis di Mariozzo," a divine little sandwich of pork, cheese, spinach, and anchovies. Truthfully, when I took my first bite, a voice in my head said "BEST THING I EVER ATE" and truly, it was. The sandwich was absolutely balanced - the soft roll, the green crunch, the smoky perfect pork, the creamy cheese, and that salty anchovy. The size was perfect too - just enough to feel satisfied but not too much to overdo it. If you patron Roscioli, get this and eat it as prepared. I don't care for anchovies and *almost* picked mine off, but when in Rome... Up to this point in our trip, we really hadn't eaten much pasta so I knew we needed amatriciana. I ordered the "la matriciana o amatriciana" and it was exactly what I wanted: the tomato sauce and pecorino cheese blended perfectly and balanced wonderfully with the crispy pig cheek. As if that wasn't enough, we went ahead and got the cacio e Pepe. I've made it at home before and while similar, I now know what it should taste like. Delicious!!!! One surprising star of our lunch was the "spinach saltati," sautéed spinach in French butter with Parmesan shavings. Sautéed spinach is a standard side in our house; I will now make it like this on special occasions to remind me of our wonderful lunch!!! We had a delicious sparkling red to start followed by an awesome Brunello by the glass. The wine on offer was wonderful; it was fab to buy what we enjoyed with our lunch right there in the restaurant. We finished with the cheesecake, which was just okay to me but the limoncello sorbet that it was paired with was out of this world amazing! A definite must! Is known as the top carbonara spot in Rome and it is 100% accurate. Make sure you make a reservation here online. It's not difficult. But you must make a reservation. I've made two trips to Rome. First time i tried to do a walk-in and it didn't work. Made the res about a week before for the second trip and it was perfect. Sat downstairs in the very cool wine cellar and had great service from Ernesto! The menu is for sure fancier and more expensive- but that's why you are going! We had the caprese salad and the swordfish carpaccio to start (caprese was fine nothing special, but the swordfish was insanely good)- the bread basket was blah which was surprising bc of the bakery side to Roscioli- also no balsamic or olive oil offered with the bread which we thought was kinda weird. Our daughter ordered the gnocchi with tomato sauce and it was good! Not the best she had in Rome but really good. We shared the veal meatballs with the chestnut polenta (delicious) and the rigatoni with pork cheek (I did not care for it because I thought it was really salty but my husband liked it!). The pasta to me tasted almost too al dente. We also split a little side salad with wild herbs and oranges and pomegranate seeds and I loved it- but it was very, very small. The place has a great atmosphere, I would recommend getting a reservation since it is a small establishment and can get very busy very fast. We ordered the burrata with the sundried tomatoes which was very good. The burrata had a perfect consistency and the tomatoes had the perfect amount of sweetness. We also ordered mozzarella bufala and sundried tomatoes which was also delicious. I preferred the mozzarella just because I preferred the consistency of the mozzarella. As my main course I ordered the polpetti, which are meatballs. They came out warm, with a shredded smoked cheese on the top which was a fun flavor, along with a side of fried polenta. Another recommendation by a local contact of mine, we decided to come here despite not having a reservation. Luckily, we were able to snag a table because of some no-shows for the evening. If you do your research on where to find great pasta in Roma then you will surely read or hear about Roscioli. And my, is the pasta divine! I was really craving for some traditional Roman flavors and really wanted to show my husband what good pasta is like since he never enjoys pasta in restaurants in the US and often tells me he prefers the pasta I make at home. Well, Roscioli certainly didn't disappoint. We ordered carbonara, cacio e pepe and rigatoni with bottarga. The three of us swapped plates to try each other's dishes and everyone's clear favorite was the carbonara. Oh so perfect. I really enjoyed the rigatoni as well since I believe this was my first time having bottarga and it is quite an interesting flavor. Before the pasta we shared some mozzarella di buffala able prosciutto. It was incredible! The creamy mozzarella paired with the salty, slightly thick slices of cured meat was just terrific! I really can't say anything wrong about the food. We also shared a small dessert but really, the highlight here is the antipasti and pasta so I would skip dessert next time. And finally, we were a little surprised that their wine selection was on the pricey end as so often you find wine to be so cheap in Europe. This was my favorite meal in all of Rome! The Caciao E Pepe was cooked to al dente perfection and the sauce was so rich and such an extraordinary flavor! Although I don't typically eat pork, I sampled my boyfriend's Carbonara because with every bite he was making noises that clearly indicated a pleasure beyond anything he's ever experienced (And I'm only a little jealous) and continued insisting I try it. It was something divine, let me tell you. If pork tasted half that good in any other dish I'd convert to an all-swine diet, truly!! Definitely make a reservation. We made one for 9pm on a Saturday night via the website - we wanted seating in the wine cellar downstairs, which is less hectic than upstairs in the salumeria. Even with a reservation, you may need to wait for a bit since it's a super popular place. The salumeria has cheese, meats, specialty food products - cheeses are more expensive, but some other specialty goods have reasonable prices. Once seated, they start you off with bread - most of it was better than the other stuff we've had at casual restaurants in Italy since they have their own bakery. They have tons of wines - the walls are lined with them. We went with a bottle of a Langhe Nebbiolo and then some glasses - they actually have quite a few by the glass. We did all the food family style. Their menu is actually much bigger than a lot of other restaurants. Since they're a salumeria, there are lots of special meats and cheeses to choose from. Starters: - Insalata di carciofi cotti e crudi: raw and cooked artichoke salad with pine nuts and walnut oil. This was a good fall salad - Cru di Parma: 3 special Parma hams of different ages - it was interesting to compare them - I didn't necessarily like the 36/40 month more. One was kind of nutty and reminded me of iberico (which they have on the menu, too) - Burrata with winter black truffle pearls: I wish the vehicle for the burrata were something other than their house bread. The truffle pearls were great - subtle and different in texture. For the burrata itself, I could have used some more salt Pastas: I like how al dente theirs are - the menu actually says you can ask for it to be less al dente, but I preferred it their way - Bottarga rigatoni with yuzu butter: definitely strong on the bottarga - probably my least favorite of the pastas - Carbonara: the pork in this was super flavorful and was some of the best pork I've had in a pasta - Cacio e Pepe: more cheesy and less saucy than the carbonara; I liked this a lot We ended up with 3 pretty rich pastas, but those sounded best to us. They actually sell Roscioli cacio e Pepe and carbonara kits that you can buy as a souvenir/gift. We finished with some donut cookies and hazelnut chocolate dip on the house. We also chose one of their grappas (moscato based but not overly sweet) and a Super Nikka, which I've never seen before in the US. In the end, for 3 of us, it was €204 with a bottle of wine and a few drinks, and we left pretty full. Overall, pricing is more like the US, and I think a lot of Americans come here after Katie Para and Aziz Ansari posted about Roscioli. In general, most places in Rome are more expensive than in other parts of Italy. It's definitely worth checking out if you're in Rome. We started off with an extravagant bread basket, but with it came this fluffy ricotta spread with these delicious onions. (The Bread was good and all but I legitimately started eating it with a spoon.) Then came the pasta. I tried the amamtriciana (pork cheek, parmigiana, pomodoro sauce), which was really good. But that Cacio e Pepe was INCREDIBLE. Honestly the best pasta dish I have ever tasted, I devoured it. Came here based on a recommendation of an Italian friend - he told me to forget everywhere else in Rome and just make a reservation. We called ahead and made a reservation for a Monday night (it seems like they had two dinner seatings, one at 7pm and another at 9:30pm). The same Italian friend told us to be a "cultured tourist" and have dinner at a civilized time at like 9pm so we of course booked for 9:30pm ;) For the appetizer I was planning on having the foie gras but sadly they weren't serving that day. So my boyfriend and I ordered the burrata with sundried tomatoes instead. This turned out to be a fantastic decision - the dish was so creamy and the tomatoes provided the perfect amount of acidity and the sweetness to compliment it. It honestly was so good that the boyfriend, who normally does not even touch any veggies/fruits, totally stole the sundried tomatoes that I had been saving for my last bite! For the main dish, I ordered the carbonara and OMG!!! I don't know how this place prepares this dish but I don't care because it's that good. The pasta was perfectly al dente (some might argue that it's too hard but I personally love it this way) with the sauce perfectly coating each noodle. And the BACON. Holy crap the bacon. It is so crispy yet so juicy that it's heavenly. If you're in Rome I cannot recommend this place enough. We were in Rome for just two nights in October. I tried to book a table at Roscioli but they were booked solid. We decided to walk up on one of the nights we were in town and they said we could take a table as long as we finished up before the next reservation. It was wonderful! We ordered La Caprese ( buffalo Mozzarella with cherry tomatoes) fiore di Zucca (Zucchini flowers stuffed with ricotta and anchovies) carbonara, Raviolo di coda E pecorino... GET THIS! This raviolo is amazing!! The Carbonara was great too, Order the Raviolo... amazing! Meat and cheese stuffed hand made ravioli with a light cream sauce! So good! They have an extensive wine list and sommeliers on site. They have a tastIng menu at 5:30 and 8. This place was high quality and very special!
