Great little restaurant that we stopped in on our way to Canada for breakfast. It has an old cafe feel to it, my favorite. Our waitress was great. She took good care of us from the moment that we were seated until we left. She quickly took our drink order and kept the coffee and water flowing. I ordered the biscuits and sausage gravy with two scrambled eggs on top. It was very tasty, I just added a lot of black pepper like I always do. read more

Ate here twice, the best rated place in tiny backwoods town of Lupton close to the Rifle River State Recreation Area. After rustic camping, eating hot dogs and bacon and watermelon chunks -- which is great as far as it goes -- at most meals, it was a treat to enjoy a civilized, well prepared sit-down meal of the lake perch one time, and NY Strip steak with battered, butterflied shrimp the other time. Both times we shared the entree, and I'm a big eater so that's saying a lot for the amount of food they give! The perch was flaky and delicious, lightly dusted breading, so a pretty light meal. Mashed potatoes and gravy were good, the "Cali soup" of cheese and broccoli and ham pieces was a little odd but good. Shrimp was succulent and firm, delicious! Much better than I expected at a mom and pop restaurant. The chef cooked the steak perfectly to order, medium to medium rare. So often in small mom and pop restaurants, cooks have no idea how to cook a steak but this one does! Highly recommended! After reading some reviews, I was hesitant. But I'm so glad we came to Rose City Cafe! My husband and I stopped here on our way back to the Detroit area after camping in Rogers City. First impression: parking was plentiful. The restaurant was well maintained, very clean, homey. Bathrooms were nice. (I'm picky about cleanliness.) They make their own baked goods - and let me tell you we were head over heels after tasting the molasses cookie. My husband ordered the Irish Omelette with a side of rye toast. The rye toast was incredible--huge pieces, served with a delightful home made jam. I had the messy monster bowl with a side of biscuits. It was delicious!! I ordered the Deluxe Nachos and I was not disappointed. They give you a lot of food. I probably should have gotten the half order there was so much. I shared with some of the people at our table, there were six of us, and I couldn't finish them. They have chips, taco meat, cheese, lettuce, olives and jalapenos. I had them remove the tomatoes. Salsa and sour cream on the side. Very good. Most others at the table got breakfast dishes. The toast is thick cut too. All of the portion sizes were big. They also have homemade jam that comes with the toast. Up front they have a selection of desserts and cookies to choose from. All of them were large. My family and I were here on a very busy Saturday night. I felt really bad for the overwhelmed wait staff , so I offered to help bus tables , big mistake! I definitely made our waitress mad and we ended up waiting approximately 2 hours for our food. We arrived here at 5:30, and we're one of the last few people to leave at closing time. It was sad to see people who got to the restaurant long after us get their food while we waited and waited and waited. I thought we should have left about an hour in , but we kept thinking any second out food would come. I'm rating this diner with just one star not because the food is bad, it's pretty good but because of a service issue. I ran into our server about 10 days after we ate there. She asked if she could ask me a question. I said sure. She asked if there was an issue with her service when she waited on us. I said no, everything was great. She said she didn't receive her tips from our table. There were three couples. I know that one other couple and I tip 20%+, but I'm not sure what the other couple tips. At least 15% for sure. We all got separate bills. You have to go up to a register to pay so we didn't leave the bills on the table. Two of us paid with credit cards so there should not have been an issue. This makes me so angry. Nothing to be done at this stage, but we sure won't be back there. read more

I started with chicken noodle soup, which tasted homemade and sported thick-cut noodles and meaty chunks of chicken. For my entree, I tried the "Mile High Meatloaf" which delivered a mile high yum-factor. The dish comprised a bed of hearty gravy, followed by a thick slice of texas toast holding a generous serving of homemade meatloaf with a scoop of mashed potatoes, all topped by two perfectly fried onion rings. It was delish. Hubby got the 1/2 club with fries. For 1/2 a sandwich, the club did a fair imitation of a whole sandwich. It was loaded up with bacon and turkey and the fixins were fresh. French fries were decent. If you're in the area, Rose City Cafe is worth a stop. read more

Stopped here for lunch a few years ago and got a delicious, perfectly grilled reuben sandwich and a bowl of ham and bean soup I think I could eat every day. This morning I decided to give breakfast a try and ordered the special--eggs scrambled with sausage and onion and topped with cheese, along with potatoes and toast. The eggs were excellent, as was the homemade wheat toast. The hash browns were the weak link here. I ordered them extra crispy, and they came lightly browned in a serving an inch thick, leaving some of the shreds in the middle undercooked. They took up more room on the plate than the eggs, and I only ate about 1/4 of them. Note to the kitchen--you are not doing your customers a favor by serving a portion too large to cook well. Service was fine. Took a little time to get the waitress's attention, even though I was the only person in the restaurant at 7AM, but once she came, I was well taken care of for the rest of my meal. Coffee refills came just when I needed them. Will stop here again, though I might see if I can sub a vegetable for potatoes, or try the american fries. read more

I tried this place again and again i was disappointed. The french dip was dry and they don't add cheese to it like most places do. The chili was so so no flavor. Should have went to McDonald's like my first thought was but i wanted some home cooking. Very disappointed, i will not be going there again. We came in today cause all of Lupton is out of power, and apparently everyone else had the same idea. We definitely waited, as there were only two girls working but they were busting their butts the whole time. We knew we were gonna wait a little because the place was packed, but they never left our coffee cups empty. They were probably stressing out a lot but they were still so nice.
