My family had a wonderful experience at MJ's Eatery! The service was prompt from the moment we arrived. Every employee we interacted with was friendly, welcoming, and attentive. We ordered the biscuit platter, and it was absolutely delicious. The portion was generous enough for two people to share comfortably, making it a great value as well ($15) Everything was fresh, flavorful, and served quickly. We always come here from breakfast when up at the lake. We went twice this trip. Waitresses are hit or miss, Jodi is ok but makes excuses of stuff going on for lack of service. Our 2nd trip I think her name was Brittany and she was awesome. Jodi went to ring us up and the receipt paper was low. She literally walked a way and got some order for tables, I guess hoping someone else would come change it. When she returned she was cashing out ticket she had in pocket and before attending to line to cash out. I am not sure how she thought that was right. Went for breakfast after church (around 12:30 or so on Sunday), and the place is really popular. The line moved pretty fast for such a small place (in a remodeled fast food place, so small dining room). The breakfasts are outstanding! Eggs perfectly cooked to order (mine were sunny side up, table mates were over medium), hash browns are crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside, sausage gravy is nicely seasoned, not too much salt and not peppery. The sausage links were cooked perfectly, bacon was good tasting, but limp for my tastes, so order it crispy if you like that snap. French toast is made with thick sliced swirl bread, and my table mates loved it. Service was great! All the staff, even though they were busy, were very friendly and efficient. This is a great little restaurant that we fell into quite by accident. The food was great. I had a bacon and cheese omelette made with 3 eggs and lots of bacon! The service was darn near perfect...my coffee cup was never empty for longer than about 30 seconds. The prices are more than reasonable as well. I'll admit that when we arrived in Houghton Lake we had no intention of eating breakfast. Looking at Yelp for ideas, we came across MJ's Eatery. A very good choice! MJ's is a small eatery made even smaller by the current 50% requirements imposed on restaurants due to COVID. We arrived during the lunch rush and were fortunate to get a table. Once inside, I saw that this wasn't just a restaurant place-sandwiches and wraps looked good also. Once we looked at the menu, it was going to be breakfast food! My wife had the "Country Breakfast" and said her eggs were done to perfection with amazing hash browns. I had pancakes that had cinnamon swirl icing. Forget the calories-it was well worth it. Bacon was perfectly crispy as ordered-not burnt as it often happens. Service was outstanding at this small, family run restaurant. My only regret was I didn't take any pictures. Fantastic food and service but be sure to bring your patience and good attitude as you may have to wait for a table. Went in on a Saturday around 11 a.m. Had about a 10 minute wait, but I expected it. I'd give this place 4 stars any day, but this time the service was so good that I have to give credit where it is due - Brittany. Our server, Brittany, was the friendliest person ever! I've been coming to MJ's since they first opened (first to tip) and have always had good service; but Brittany took it to another level. She was friendly, on the spot whenever we hoped to see her, and she acted as if she was having a great time doing her job. Let me tell you what, that positive attitude was contagious with the customers. (I saw frowns turn upside down.) As for the food...my brunch date and I had our hearts set on breakfast when we walked in; however, we changed our minds when we saw the special was a "fish trio" for $9.99 and learned it was lightly battered cod, 2 pieces of perch, ~6 smelt (which I liked, but typically don't) with their seasoned fries and fresh cole slaw. As much as I don't want to compete with others to get a table, it's only fair to tell my Yelp! family that this place is absolutely worth the stop. read more
