My partner and I stayed in the vintage airsteam Tonomo and other family members stayed in the three other living spaces (one other airstream and two suites in the main buildings). Everything was well thought out, comfortable and beautiful. Smith Lake itself is a treasure and I will remember early morning paddle boarding as one of my favorite Alabama experiences. Kayaking, swimming, tubing and floating are great too. Alex and Jim, the husband and wife who own and run the B and B, are what really stand out. From stellar breakfasts, interesting conversation and a wealth of tips about the area, these two are charming and knowledgeable hosts. A wonderful combination of private and social spaces and sunsets that I will remember for a long time. I strongly recommend this as a true get away.

And we think this one is going to charm you! Its southern flare meets modern opulence but has an outdoorsy twist. Epic waterfall views from the balcony, gorgeous decor, spacious bedrooms, lavish kitchen and baths, and it is all within steps of historic downtown Helena! The property is two-story new build has all the amenities from large outdoor yard filled with game and a putting green. A spa hot tub for unwinding. Tables and swings for lounging with views of the creek. A large Firepit and outdoor entertaining space. All with views of the creek! As for our unit, I entered the front door, and my jaw dropped. I followed down a long hall to find a stunning, opulent kitchen with a peninsula with seating for four, large farmhouse sink, and gorgeous grey cabinetry. It opens into the living space with a large couch and two lavish chairs. That opens to the second-floor patio that overlooks the large yard below and a view of Buck Creek and its waterfall. We sat out with champagne for hours chatting and taking in the view. Up the stairs back inside is the cutest children's loft with first mural, bunkbeds, and play area. The two bedrooms are off the main hallway. A charming second bedroom off the primary is spacious and clean. It has a bathroom adjacent with stunning black floor tiling. As for the primary, it is in a league of its own. Large king bed flanked by pendant lighting and a can't miss accent wall with a ton of textures, wood, and color. To the left is the main bathroom with two sink vanity and a walk-in shower. The town is literal steps from our unit; downtown Helena is quintessential southern charm. Quaint downtown dotted with local restaurants and a brewery, shopping, and more! We really liked the Brewery in the heart of old town, downtown Helena, Oversoul Brewing. Good beer and friendly staff with live music for the win.

So we went to the Piggly Wiggly and bought what we needed for the 3 mornings we were going to be there, which suited us fine, because we don't enjoy typical American B&B fare; but it left us wondering why the place calls itself a B&B. It should be just a B. There is a nice big kitchen with a microwave, a fridge, a stove top for everyone to use and all the plates and mugs you'll ever need. There's also no one to clean and make the beds; that too didn't bother us much, but it's kind of unusual. A caveat: several rooms don't have their own bathrooms, but a shared one for which, in order to access it, one has to walk through another one's bedroom. It's a nice old house, but it's been quite neglected over the years. It could use some TLC. And I think the fact that it smelled very moldy inside, at least in part, comes from the fact that not a single window is operable (they've all been nailed or painted shut); so there's no way to move fresh air through the house. No in between *Nice bathroom was spacious and a mix of character and modern. Shower pressure was nice and hot. No plungers found anywhere.....we didn't need it but another guests staying stairs was roaming around the hotel to find one for their room and eventually found on in the dining room bathroom. *No staff present - Unless we missed them, we didn't not see any staff present; it's clear someone was cleaning some of the common areas but no one cleaned our room during our stay and again the small details mentioned earlier (broken coffee/hot water machine) would have really elevated our stay. *Overall - Nice mix of classic features + modern touches in the property and room. Beautiful grounds and house with the garden, plants and flowers. You can tell the grounds were kept impeccably. Indoors was also kept immaculate with the exception of the small details mentioned earlier. We utilized the beautiful dining room on our last evening. *Quiet, safe area even for your car despite the transients and homeless in the area. We never felt in danger for ourselves or vehicle. No non-guests were ever seen loitering on the property grounds. *Parking - nice perk in the back of the house as parking is pretty strict in nearby business lots. However, the true beauty in this home was not the home or antique pieces, Bernette, the owner, is the true gem when you stay at Shadowlawn. She goes above and beyond for her guests and truly cares for the people staying in her home. Mississippi is known for hospitality and Bernette epitomizes the spirit of hospitality in Mississippi. When you talk with Bernette, it is like talking with a friend you have known for years. The breakfast she makes is five-star quality and made from scratch. The rooms were very comfortable and well-designed and decorated. We slept like babies. We also were staying during a MSU gameday weekend, and the rates for our stay were great, especially considering the alternatives were very pricey and do not come with Bernette and her amazing personality and attitude. We highly recommend anyone visiting Columbus or Starkville to stay with Bernette at Shadowlawn. We are already looking forward to our next visit to Columbus because we already know where we will be staying, which is Shadowlawn. Why go anywhere else?

We sat out there for a little while. It was wonderful! She brought out wine and cheese for us. I had some cheese and my husband had some wine. Although I didn't drink the wine, the cheese was good! She kept a mini fridge upstairs stocked with water and soft drinks. That was great! We LOVED our room! We stayed in the Smitherman room. The bed was big and comfy. The TV was nice, too. There wasn't a DVD player, so we brought our portable one and watched it in bed. Breakfast was great! She even gave me a coke when I asked for one. It was very kind! We'll be going back for sure!
