Highlight was the charm and beauty of the property, quiet and safe nature, and convenient location - overall good value. What can elevate the experience more is below some notes: *Theres no breakfast, which we knew, but there can be perhaps some small pastries? *Outlets were limited....solo travelers probably not an issue; bring extension chords if having multiple outlets is going to be important *Hooks / Hangers were non existent; if you need to hang clothes, make sure to bring clothes you won't need to to iron Water filter inoperative in hallway during our whole stay; a bummer in case you want hot water, tea or coffee. *Lamps in room were nonexistent; it's either using the bathroom light or room light. No in between *Nice bathroom was spacious and a mix of character and modern. Shower pressure was nice and hot. No plungers found anywhere.....we didn't need it but another guests staying stairs was roaming around the hotel to find one for their room and eventually found on in the dining room bathroom. *No staff present - Unless we missed them, we didn't not see any staff present; it's clear someone was cleaning some of the common areas but no one cleaned our room during our stay and again the small details mentioned earlier (broken coffee/hot water machine) would have really elevated our stay. *Overall - Nice mix of classic features + modern touches in the property and room. Beautiful grounds and house with the garden, plants and flowers. You can tell the grounds were kept impeccably. Indoors was also kept immaculate with the exception of the small details mentioned earlier. We utilized the beautiful dining room on our last evening. *Quiet, safe area even for your car despite the transients and homeless in the area. We never felt in danger for ourselves or vehicle. No non-guests were ever seen loitering on the property grounds. *Parking - nice perk in the back of the house as parking is pretty strict in nearby business lots. We also rarely saw indication of other guests other than the cars parked outdoor and one guests we saw in person in the common area. *Great location - easy to find, walkable to stores and restaurants, short drive to grocery. read more

Disappointed -Over priced for what you get -To gain access to the house, you drive down a narrow alley to the back entry gate. Parking is tight. -A historical house from the post antebellum time frame. -Everyone is given the code to the cipher lock on the front door. You come and go as you please without needing to interact with anyone to open the door. You are sent the code in an email. At one point, my phone died and I couldn't remember the code. There is no reception desk, so there was no one inside to assist me gaining access. I had to go to a restaurant to charge my phone enough to retrieve the code. It will be a good idea to write the code down and keep it with youwhen you leave in case you forget it or your phone dies. Key cards for the front door and the rooms work much better. But then, there would need to be someone there to issue the cards. I was the only one on the second floor when I arrived (6 rooms). I was assigned room 6. -Shower is inside of a claw footted bath tub. Instead of putting up shower curtains with the oval rods, they used straight rods. The curtains continuously rub against your skin when you're trying to shower. I hate for the curtains to touch me when I shower. You're having whatever was on the last guest getting onto your skin. Oval rods help hold the curtains away from the person showering and is an inexpensive fix. -The description on the website indicate there is an iron and ironing board in the room. I had to go from room to room looking for the iron and board. I finally found one in the furnace room down the hall. - The room was less than appealing. No closet in either of the two bedrooms. I had to fold my suit coat and pants and lay them on the table after ironing them. -The only thing separating the two bedrooms was a sheer curtain. The beds are very low to the floor. When you open the curtain to the second bedroom it gives the illusion that you need to step down into the room. However, this illusion is created because the bed is so low to the floor, it appears you need to step down into the room. -There was no key card for the front door. You use the cipher lock to gain entry. There was an actual key that they leave in the bedrooms door lock for you. -The TV has 2 remotes. One for the TV, the other for the ROKU. When you turn on the TV then the ROKU, there is a long wait for the ROKU to turn the app/channel selections on. An impatient person would turn the TV off thinking nothing works. There is at least a 45 second to 1 minute delay before anything shows up on the TV. - The advertisement indicates there is a breakfast in the Common area. I was informed after I booked that there was no food offered. -I had no idea that customer service was not 24 hours. I called the mansions number around 10 PM and was rudely communicated to for having the nerve to call and disturb her so late complaining about my room. I was told that I could stay or go find someplace else to stay and they would work something out to see how much I would get back in a refund. Let's talk about customer service. From the advertisement of breakfast being served and then finding out there is no food at all, to the rudeness of the representative, it is clear they are only in business to make the money. That's a shame for such a historical place. -I was in town alone for a relatives funeral service. I wanted to check out this place to see if it could be someplace my wife and I could stay when she came to town with me. Needless to say, there is no way I would bring my wife here. It is ghostly at night walking down the hallways. -A good note is that the room was clean, though antiquated. The bed was comfortable, however, the TV was mounted on the wall that runs diagonally with the bed and it is not on a swivel to turn it so you can watch TV from the bed. If you want to watch TV from the bed, you would need to lay sideways across the bed, near the middle of the bed. -Disappointed. I was looking forward to staying here. read more

This was the last stop on my cross country drive and I am so happy to say that it ended on a positive note. The owner kept in contact with me during the day to inform me of the check in process and how to get into the house. I struggled a bit to figure out how to actually find the parking area because I kept passing the ally where you need to try, so don't make that mistake. The house is beautiful and has tons of fun décor throughout. Since I had a ton of stuff with me I had booked the room on the ground floor. I thought it might be noisy but it wasn't whatsoever. There were snacks and drinks available and my room was clean and comfortable. The breakfast in the morning was really good as well. I will be brining my husband back here soon! read more

Where do I start we booked the B&B for our 22nd wedding anniversary trip upon arrival we were greeted with the most warm and loving welcome from Sheila (owner) and we're offered right away snacks and refreshments. We were given a tour and history of the B&B. We felt at home right away. We stayed the night of the 4th and 5th of July. The 4th Sheila provided BBQ from a local restaurant it was superb along with great fellowship and watching of the fireworks from the wrap around porch. We had breakfast the morning of the 5th and 6th made fresh every morning with the choice of coffee/tea or a beverage of your choice out of the fridge. My husband is a soda drinker (his form of coffee). We met new friends and exchanged stories about life, travel and more. This is the first time we've ever stayed at a B&B and what an AMAZING experience. If you're looking for a relaxing getaway with a smile and a welcoming atmosphere look no further. I absolutely love this place and the hostess. I've stayed at four bed and breakfast and this was by far the nicest. The neighborhood that surrounds the Hassinger Daniel is amazing with beautiful old churches, gorgeous mansions and nice restaurants. The innkeeper was extremely nice and welcoming. The mansion is gorgeous on the outside and elegant and a bit eccentric on the inside. We stayed in the Vulcan suite, which I thought was star trek themed (star fleet insignia resemblance above the bed). However, the suite is named for the view of the Vulcan statue from the bedroom window. All the rooms are unique and wonderfully decorated. We made a reservation a month in advance and corresponded back and forth with Sheila the owner/manager about bringing our 7 year old granddaughter. Her response was, " of course she is welcome, any grandchild of yours would be very polite and well behaved I'm sure". We thought no more about it and showed up Saturday evening 3-5-22, bags in hand and Sheila proceeds to tell us our granddaughter can't stay and tried to pretend like she had no knowledge of her coming. We showed her our emails with her and her response was, " WE, must of had a misunderstanding!!" The only misunderstanding was, if I wasn't clear enough that after staying with her several times over the past 7 year that we would never be back! We were coming to Birmingham for a concert at UAB and found this B & B online. Not only was it close to UAB, it was near a lot of good restaurants. The booking and check-in process was easy, and we thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay at Shelia's beautiful home. The restoration of the mansion was extraordinary. Be sure to check out the photo album in the front foyer to see what condition the mansion was in before the restoration. It was an amazing journey from then to now. The owner is horrible maybe even mentally unhealthy!!! We were lied to about our reservations multiple times. We booked on-line and spoke on the phone several times to confirm our room. When arriving, the room was not a double room. The owner was horrible and extremely rude. She spoke to us in the most condescending way. "I need for you to repeat what I say!" We really felt that she is a bit senile. We tried to work with her and since we couldn't rent an extra room asked to visit with those who could be accommodated. She refused to let us visit in the room and gave us a curfew to leave. She was horrible!!! I cannot express how bad this was. We ended up leaving and not using the room at all. read more

The Positives: Clean, easy to locate, welcoming hostess. cookies in the lobby. free sodas, water in the guest fridge. some off-street parking available. loads of antiques. we were offered an upgrade to the Peacock room, we declined. The Concerns: We stayed in the Veranda room, on the main floor. You cannot control the HVAC- and we were burning up by 3 am. We had covered/closed the heater vents at 10 pm and were still very uncomfortable. we ended up getting up and driving home. I travel a good bit and like avoiding hotels where I can, and I like quirky stuff and people. This B&B just didn't fit my needs. I think the hostess would do well to ask guests about **their needs and plans** so as to provide that help, rather than talking at length about a parlor game that my husband and had zero interest in, and could not tell you how to play. I told her why we were there, one night only, yucky weather, work event, we're fairly local, etc. - and we had somewhere to be.... it was just offputting and annoying to feel a little captive when I had expressed that we had somewhere to be... I appreciate her passion for the house and respect the love and effort that went into restoring it. read more

For several weeks I'd been looking forward to patronizing Hassinger Daniels Mansion when I came to Birmingham. Unfortunately, I found out I suddenly was having trouble with my bank card after I landed in Alabama and tried to check in. I offered Sheila cash for the room and she said that it wasn't her policy. I proceeded to call my bank about the problem. The Bank of America virtual voice told me it would take an hour for someone to get back to me, so I also contacted a family member to take care of the room so neither Sheila nor myself would be kept waiting. While my sister was taking care of the room, Sheila came out and snapped at me that it shouldn't be taking this long (it was about twenty minutes) and demanded that I leave. She implied that I was up to something. So I left. A few minutes later, my bank called and told me they had placed a block on the card as they were wondering why someone was using my card in Alabama, where I had never previously. The Bank took care of the problem and I booked at the Hilton with no problem. Overall my trip to Birmingham was successful, but the first thing a friend asked me when I returned to California was how I enjoyed the bed and breakfast as I had talked a lot about it when mentioning my trip. I told her what happened and she said, "Oh no! You'd been raving about it for a week!" So yeah. Beautiful pictures. Beautiful antique furniture. Rude (possibly racist) owner. You'll get the Southern but not the hospitality. read more

This place is definitely quirky, but we had a great stay! The decor is a little over the top, but the house is beautiful, the breakfast was yummy, and the staff was great. We stayed in the bridal suite with another couple. There was plenty of space for all of us, but we had to laugh when we saw that there was a window facing from the room into the bathroom. Our stay was outstanding. We stayed in the Garden View Room. The room was spacious and the large claw-foot tub was sufficiently large for a nice long soak. The Garden View room has a small kitchen in it for some reason, which is a bit odd, but it did not detract from the beauty of the room since it is somewhat hidden. The bed was very comfortable. The property and building are beautiful. Sheila was very helpful. Her husband's handiwork (life-sized carvings for carousels) are displayed throughout the interior for a nice decorative touch. There are roughly 7 parking spots behind the hotel. Don't park in the Chik-fil-a next door, as towing is swift. The interior is a bit of a museum for the home and the times when it was built. While this place is beautiful and a wonderful location, be weary that the inn keeper is excessively rude and impatient. She was condescending upon arrival and practically insulted us at the front door. She made a homophobic comment and made certain that we understood her values. If you are BIPOC, LGBTQ or anything other than a white heterosexual couple, there are definitely better places for you in the city. It's so unfortunate that her actions had such a damper on our stay. She was consistently rude into breakfast the next morning and made us uncomfortable the whole stay. I would not recommend her or her business to anyone. read more

I stayed here because a room I booked at another B&B wasn't available and unique is absolutely a word that describes this place. The space is clean and well maintained and you can tell the owner cares about the house. The owner is honestly the only negative aspect of the visit - maybe I have different ideas of friendly but she was overbearing and severely delayed what could have been a quick check in. I like talking to people and hearing their stories but there's a time and place for everything. The owner was trying to convince us the house was nice when we ready to just unpack. The next day we got to explore the house by ourselves and that was really pleasant, I think we might have been the only guests so we really got a chance to linger and look around, at least on the first two floors. Each room has a unique theme - we did the Garden View because it had the best bathtub. I don't think you can have a bed and breakfast without a kooky owner so I kind of get it but if you want a more hands off experience I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. That being said this is a story that's going to stay with us for a while and there's nothing like staying over a carousel carving school. read more

Absolutely perfect. The place is clean and intricately decorated. The beautiful architecture of the home shines light on a beautiful part of southern history. We stayed in the Camelot room, which we chose because of the king sized bed. The room has a private bathroom inside of it (with a clawfoot tub!). We were able to see the Vulcan statue out of our giant windows. There were thick curtains and we were able to block out most of the light. If there was anyone staying in the room next to us or above us, we were unable to hear any noise. The loudest noise we heard was the sound of the wood stairs when visitors would come and go (the Camelot is right at the top of the staircase on the 2nd floor), although we did not mind. Breakfast is served at 8:00, and although I did not make it until 8:30, Sheila (the owner) made me a plate and chatted with me for quite a bit. My fiance wanted to sleep in, and told Sheila he would not make breakfast in the morning, so she made him a plate and put in the fridge for when he awoke. Sheila was a fantastic host, and luckily I had some time to kill on vacation, because I enjoyed listening to the history of the mansion, the extremely thorough renovation process, and viewing many photographs of the process. If you have a chance, I would absolutely recommend hearing this from Sheila herself. If not, there is a nice book in the front room documenting the history of the house and the renovation process. As other reviewers have pointed out, the fridge is stocked with water bottles, soda, juice, plastic cutlery, and light beer. We were clearly informed that we could help ourselves to these things. Sheila also had some delicious treats by the front door she encouraged us to snack on. We were welcome to put any of our food or drinks in the refrigerator if necessary. The best part is how walkable the area is. We stayed in Birmingham for a concert at Iron City Bham. The Hassinger Daniels mansion is exactly 1 mile from the venue, and we made the walk before sunset with no problem, then took a $8 yellow cab back to the hotel. We walked a half block to Dave's Pub, and then 3 more blocks to a World of Beer. The food selection in the area is fantastic as well; we walked to both Chez Fonfon (french cuisine) and Makarios Bar & Grill (mediterranean), both of which were absolutely delicious and highly recommended. Other notable restaurants in the area are Jim & Nick's BBQ, Mellow Mushroom, Ocean (pricey), Highlands Bar & Grill, Metro Prime Steakhouse, The Original Pancake House, Waffle House, Surin of Thailand, the list goes on... And yes, every single one of these places is within 2 blocks of the bed & breakfast. read more

My wife and I stayed at Hassinger Daniels Mansion on Saturday night, after we saw Phish jam at Oak Mountain. This is such a neat house with an enormous amount of antiques. We stayed in the Camelot Room, and it had such a quaint, yet modern, feel. Sheila, Ira, and Tawanna were great, and they made us feel so welcome. Wow, I had a great stay here! Easy check-in, pleasant and considerate staff, unique rooms, comfortable bed, all in a beautiful old mansion, it was wonderful. I spent a couple hours just walking around looking at the furnishings, light fixtures, artwork​ and especially the beautiful stained glass which is a particular interest of mine. There were just enough fun and quirky touches to make what is a fairly formal home feel warm and inviting. The breakfast was just outstanding. I'm disgusted. We booked this reservation about two weeks ago. We arrived in Birmingham and called ahead to see where to park. I told Shelia I had a gold Chevy trax (I guess so they didn't tow it) and she told me to come to the door. We waited a couple minutes before she came to the door. She said she understood ADA allows service dogs, but that she was "deathly allergic" (even though she was standing two feet away from us). I confirmed we would get a refund and was about to leave, but she made a comment to by BF, who is almost completely blind and uses a guide dog, but can see his phone with magnifiers and if it is close to his face. She said since he's been looking at his phone (which she said she had on camera), he wasn't blind. We asked for paperwork that she was denying us based on his service dog and she said no and shut the door. We waited and called the cops to make a report. My boyfriend waited on the porch and I waited in our car so she didn't tow it. We both made calls to see what to do. The officer arrived and had to wait like us. Shelia asked who he was and he said I'm the uniformed officer on your porch. (Sergeant Meadows was amazing). She told the officer almost exactly what she told us, but in an even more vile manner. She then wanted our names and pictures because we might not have been the people who made the reservation and berated me about walking to and from the car to check on my boyfriend. She also accused me of lying because she heard "truck" when I said "trax" (which is a compact SUV). Considering the circumstances, we were very polite. The officer had to ask her to go back inside because she kept making provocative comments. Do NOT go here. read more

Most interesting and enjoyable B&B I have stayed in. I was treated like family, and stayed after breakfast for an impromptu presented on antique laces, presented by one of the other guests, an art historian. A beautiful home with great hospitality. We spend the night at this B&B for our anniversary and it was interesting. The mansion is still "under construction" and there were several places in our room and in the home that needed a lot of TLC. The hearth of the fireplace in our room was broken and could have easily hurt my foot if I had not seen it earlier and didn't stumble on it when I got up in the dark to use the bathroom. Speaking of the bathroom, the "curtain" was an old hotel bed sheet that was stapled to the window however the bottom part of the window was a fireplace screen that was made of stain-glass and it was literally "cleated" to the window frame. The bathroom had a lovely shag bath mat that was still wet from the last tenant although the bathroom itself was well remodeled. You could hear every sound in the house and EVERY sound from the street. I was kept awake the entire night by the Fire Engines and Police Cars. The room (like all of them) had the old ventilation window above the door however ours had a hallway light directly across from it. The Inn Keeper told us we could turn the light off and we eventually did but not until much later. The breakfast was Eh -- my sausage was cold and I believe it was "cooked" in the microwave. The banana bread was very yummy though and I would have loved to get more but it seemed it was a one plate meal. I know the Inn Keepers have two B&B's and that they live primarily at the Cobb home but hopefully they will focus on the Hassinger Mansion more now that it is open. read more

This place is beautiful! When you learn about the previous owners and all the thoughtful restoration and love that was put into making this home what it is today, you will have a true appreciation for your stay. My friend and I stayed in Southern Belle and it was perfect for us because, like most rooms, if not all, ours had another bedroom "nook" so we each had our own space without being completely separated by walls and doors. So we were driving from Birmingham to new orleans and needed a place to stay to break up the trip. Rather than use some soulless corporate chain hotel we stayed here, and we are so glad we did! The house and all of the antiques and furniture in it were so stunning. My daughter loved the pink dollhouse appearance of everything, and my son enjoyed all of the cool historical touches. We checked in right away with no hassle in less than ten seconds. There was so much architectural character, we loved the house, it's hard to describe it all from the rocking horse, the dangling cherubs, the mini doll furniture, etc. Breakfast was amazing and served in a wonderful Victorian dining room with fine china. As for the location, its in the center of a part of town with lots of restaurants and shops so we disnt need to use our car at all. We hope to come back very soon and also to explore the owners other house on Cobb street! read more
