The people are very nice, but I recommend you check your own eye insurance coverage prior to having your appointment. I went this morning and they checked mine and everything was fine but when my wife went this afternoon they didn't check anything until after her appointment. At that point they charged her over $300 and mentioned that she's actually not due for an exam until January. I am new to Chicago. Needed replacement frames. I went in - they advised what I needed to do to reuse the lense (not yet time to replace). I ordered and brought in the frames. They replaced in 10 minutes. What struck me was that from the first time I walked in, several calls/scheduling later, and then this specific appt, everyone is articulate, super customer service oriented. I was a regular customer of rosin Eyecare in Hyde Park until the manager Harold Smith didn't allow me to use there bathroom. He and the other employees working remembered me as a regular customer. There was only one customer in the office at the time. Harold stated it was store policy to only allow present customers to use their facilities and my past patronage was irrelevant. So to any past or future people thinking about doing business with this location. Beware. They are only in our community of Hyde Park to make money And not a positive business who supports the people whom support them I can't believe the actual owners of this location would be happy about losing a great customer over use of the bathroom I know Harold doesn't care. I've been wearing drug store readers for a few years and finally decided it was time for professional vision care. Hyde Park's Rosin Eye is friendly, warm, and welcoming. From whoever is attending the reception desk to the docs, I feel well cared for from start to finish. They fit me with contacts and it's barely an exaggeration that I skipped out of the shop, elated that I could see again! I couldn't be more pleased with my experience and impressed by the professionalism and warmth of the Hyde Park location. I had just gotten a new prescription and brought my old (broken) Artcraft Rimway frames, attempting to duplicate my old favorites. When I asked about the lenses, he cut me off, asking. The front office employees were extremely nice and considerate. However the doctor was very condescending and boarder line rude. I was also told twice, from two different employees (one of who was the doctor) that all I needed to order contacts was my previous box. I even asked them "should I call and have my prescription sent over" and was told no. I return 3 days later with my box and the manager would not sell the contacts without an actual prescription from the doctor. Extremely perturbed. Don't come here. I recently bought new glasses, and it snaps and breaks right after the 30-day warranty expires (wow, what a coincidence). I paid $400 out of pocket for these cheaply made glasses, even with insurance. I even got a warranty to cover the costs if it broke, and even with that I still had out of pocket costs! All for some cheap, low-quality glasses. After the appointment, I was so stunned of the outrageous costs, I visited the other eye clinic next door and their eye exams were only $40 and completely covered by insurance with no out of pocket costs. I wanted to also order eye contact lenses, and the eye doctor there did not follow the proper procedure. I told her that I had used contact lenses before, and instead of asking me what brand my eyes are most comfortable with, she goes straight ahead into giving me a different brand/fit and then charges me for an eye contact fitting appointment, instead of allowing me to order from the brand my eyes are already very comfortably fitted with. This shows a lack of care for the customer, because it rushed my eyes to a different brand that they might be uncomfortable with. The people at the front desk are also very rude. I do not recommend this place to anyone unless you want overcharged glasses and contact lenses with bad customer service. read more

I had a wonderful experience here. Everyone was very friendly, courteous and accommodating. I saw two of their optometrists who were caring and knowledgeable. The facility is old school, not state of the art, but they get the job done which is the most important thing. Although I did have to come back a couple times more to have my contact lenses exchanged, I appreciated this as I got to try two other brands (the optometrists suggested) I otherwise never would have thought to try out. Through this process, I got to confirm my perfect fit. Reniece helped me out with choosing my glass frames. I've always had difficulty and been so self-conscious in choosing a pair to frame my face. She made the whole process FUN with her genuine warmth and care. She was very informative, helpful, patient and efficient. Top notch customer service right here. Thank you, Reniece! While the individual staff members at this location were helpful and kind, I have been unable to resolve an erroneous charge for a contact lens fitting, which is covered by my insurance. (This coverage was confirmed by the Rosin employee on the day of my visit.) I paid my co-pay on the day of my visit. I later received a bill for the remainder stating "not covered by insurance," which it absolutely is. I spent a great deal of time on the phone with my insurance (which confirmed that the fitting was covered) and with various Rosin employees in the billing and customer service departments, and was finally told I needed to submit a written claim contesting the charge. I did so immediately, and never heard any thing back. This was in August 2022. Meanwhile I received another bill. I am so frustrated but do not want an outstanding bill in my name, so I am prepared to pay it and be done with it. Needless to say, I've already taken my eyecare business elsewhere including a large order for contact lenses. read more

It has taken some time for me to write this review just out of shock about my last time at Rosin. I have been going to Rosin Hyde Park for 3 years and was disappointed to hear that my former optometrist was leaving the company. I met with the new optometrist Dr. Washington and she told me that we had to get ahead of the glaucoma and that she had met a women with the same issue and because she didn't get it treated right away she went blind and was walking with a dog and a cane. Imagine my shock at the way she spoke about something so delicate and what was more shocking is that, my former optometrist and an optometrist from their downtown location looked at the same results prior to her and said that I didn't have glaucoma. She gave me drops for my eyes which made my vision blurry, so I decided to go to their downtown location and have them do another test. The optometrist said that I was good to go. When I explained what happened at their Hyde Park location, the optometrist apologized and said that I didn't not have it, but since there was a history of it in my family I needed to continue to get checked annually. Needless to say, I won't be going back to the Hyde Park location. It was nice and convenient to get to their location since I live in the area, but I prefer to go to their downtown location for more professionalism and a thorough exam. read more

Love the MD here. She is awesome. No complaints on how she cares for her patients. However the staff there I don't have many nice things to say about. One thing that really rubbed me the wrong way is the guy at the front desk lied to me. I asked do they take refunds. His response was, "Refunds? No." Then Rushed off the phone. I called the downtown Rosin location just to be sure. The lady over the phone was kind enough to check into it and make sure I was still under the 30 day warranty. She told me I could bring the glasses back for a full refund if I choose. The Hyde Park location is up the street from my house, but the experience with the receptionist definitely makes me feel uncomfortable going back here and definitely makes me feel like they are all about money and don't care about the patients. Lying to people in general shows you lack integrity and cannot be trusted. Wherever you spend your money, you should be valued for it. Especially spending over 400 bucks for one pair of glasses and being told by many friends and family members they would return them and go elsewhere where you can get two pairs of glasses for that price cut in half. I'm still highly considering it and just taking my prescription to another business that is more reasonably priced and where you won't be lied too. read more

I have worn glasses since kindergarten, and have dealt with optometrists, opticians and glasses fittings for decades. And like so many Hyde Parkers, have gone "downtown" for these services. However a friend pointed me in Rosin's direction, and I am a happy person. Got the best eye exam I have had in years, and the glasses I now have are super. But the best part is the individualized service you get from Rosin- if you wear glasses you know the fitting needs to be "tweaked" for awhile to get the best fit. Their staff makes these adjustments quickly and very effectively, and the result is a great fitting, comfortable pair of glasses. This is surprisingly hard to get these days. So I now have a great pair of glasses at 1/3 the price of the "downtown" ones! read more

I came in with an eyeglass prescription, so I didn't have an exam at Rosin, but the young lady who helped me pick out frames and sold me the glasses was friendly, professional, and efficient. The rude man that a few previous reviewers complained about--and whom a friend of mine also unfortunately encountered awhile back--is obviously gone. I have to say it was not a pleasant experience with them. It is my first time to write a review on Yelp. I want to report something positive, but I could not. The eye examine was short (~10min, including the eye dilation) but okay. Then I was given a total charge number for paying even without any options of frames or lens type to choose from. Given my eyes were dilated, I could not even see and I was in the urgent to have a pair. I signed with a only hope I can get my glasses ASAP. Ten business days (2 weeks) later, I called them to check in and was told there was a issue with that they could not process my order. Ridiculously, they told me they can not reach me because of my wrong phone number. What the hell? They contacted me via both email and phone before to confirm the appointment. How could I be unreachable to them? I came back and paid more, of course, to solve the problem which should be not. Within the next 10 business days, I called back twice. The first time (day 7th) was good. The rep pulled out my info quickly and told me they were coating the lens and I can get it on time. On day 10th, the rep would not find my order initially and then told me I have to wait for one more day. How disappointing! read more

Making an appointment online was easy; the staff emailed us forms to print and fill out in advance; they gave a courtesy reminder phone call. When my husband and I arrived, not only were we greeted with a smile and immediately seen, but the staff didn't bat an eye at the fact that we had our toddler in tow and they humored her chatty, wandering ways (i.e. no evil eye that she wasn't sitting perfectly still and quiet). We went on a Thursday and I believe we saw Dr. Szafranski, and she was fabulous. Really nice, and seemed super knowledgeable. She actually seemed to want to find the exact right prescription for me (which, it turns out, had changed significantly in one eye), literally visually checked the fit of my contact lenses (no doctor has ever checked that for me right away, they just ask if it "feels ok"), checked my eyes for allergy (again, no one has ever done so, and now I have finally figured out why my contacts get blurry and slide around sometimes!) and told me where/how I could get some anti-allergy eye drops inexpensively. Bonus: No "puff of air" machine! Instead they have one that uses light. And one of the most awesome things was that there was absolutely no sales pitch to buy anything afterward. We ended up buying nothing that day because my husband's prescription didn't change and I wanted to wait a few weeks before ordering contacts, and it wasn't awkward or stressful at all. For people on U of C student insurance, even if you don't have vision insurance they do give you a discount on glasses exams. I think it was only $35 for a glasses exam and an extra $55 for a contacts exam, something like that. read more

Dr. Sfranzski is great. Nice, professional, efficient, and knows her stuff. Harold is awesome - Manager at Michigan Ave location who sometimes covers for Hyde Park manager. He was the only person who knew how to treat a customer. Only wish he worked at Hyde Park full time! **Reception staff are HORRIBLE. Worst customer service I have ever experienced at an Optician. Unprofessional, rude, abrasive and unhelpful both on the phone as well as in person. ***The entire time I was waiting, they were socializing and discussing their personal lives. They were totally unconcerned with the impression they gave to customers. They even had the audacity to Apply for Other Jobs on the Internet. ***The woman who ordered my contacts said they would arrive in 5-7 business days. 2 weeks later they still had not arrived. No one called to give me an update or apologize for the delay. I had to call in and inquire, and no one had any information or cared. I cannot recommend this Optician to others. The only reason I would return is because they are walking distance from my home. I would recommend the Michigan Ave location - just from the great customer service experience I had by phone with Harold, it seems they are much more professional there. read more

I didn't have the problem with the doctor but the front staff. I had an eye lid infection so I made an appt and came to get things checked out. I was told that the visit would be $150 and I had no problem with paying it. After the doctor checked me he said he would like to see me for a follow up appointment, he told the girl upfront to schedule me for a follow up two days later. The girl who was marking the appointment asked the doctor about the cost and he said it's part of the first visit. I go for the follow up appointment and literally I'm there for 5 minutes, I also scheduled an eye exam. When I had my eye exam I was told about another fee of 150 that I'm due. I informed the front desk that I was not suppose to be charged, one of the male employees who does the billing rudely said that he will have a look. I placed an order for contacts and I go to pick them up today, now I am being told that I owe them 50, I asked the the girl for what. Before she gets a chance to answer the same guy who said he would take a look says that he adjusted the visit price. I had no energy to argue, first you charge me 150 then say it's 50 and I was told the follow up visit was part of the initial visit. You should have called me when you made the adjustment and inform me not me having to find out when I go pick up contacts. Poor customer service and I will never go there again. read more

The people who work at this Rosin location are friendly and polite. Apparently Rosin's priority is in maximizing profits, however, not helping customers make good decisions about their eye care. Glaucoma tests are $15 extra, above the price of the eye exam. Really? I haltingly ordered a pair of glasses (progressive lenses and frames) for almost $650 before realizing that the doctor never compared my current lenses to the new prescription. I don't know if I even NEED new lenses! They also had me choosing frames while my vision was getting increasingly blurry from the dilating drops. How could I know the frames would even look good on me? The $650, by the way, included discounts from my insurance company and was $200 less than Rosin's first quote to me. I cancelled the glasses and am looking for a reputable establishment that can help me make a good decision. Rosin's m.o. is manipulative and exploitive. Unless you're so rich you don't care how much money you spend on your glasses, I'd advise staying away from this company entirely. read more

My experience turned from great to not great at all. I saw two different doctors. The first one wrote me a prescription and I received the glasses. Way too strong ( I only need glasses for the compute at work). I bring my glasses back so something can be done about this problem , I am seen by a second doctor. This doctor examined my glasses and tells me the prescription that the previous doctor prescribed is not what I was given. She gives me another exam and I receive a TOTALLY different prescription. I did not receive an apology from anyone for the inconvenience... And on top of that they would not even credit my account, discount, something for the inconvenience. They turned it around on me (the customer) as if I was the problem and told me that some people can't handle the first prescription I was prescribed ( WHICH WAS THE WRONG ONE!) This is one of the worst places I've been for eye care. I did not find the exam to be thorough and I felt rushed by all the people there. Pretty much everyone was trying to get out the door for lunch. While, the employees were very polite and friendly (the reason for my one star), the optometrist herself was condescending and thought it crazy that I asked for a quick exam with my new glasses to make sure the Rx was correct. Additionally, I had to go to the downtown location for additional tests and the confusion and poor communication b/t the 2 locations means that I'm still making follow up calls and trying to order new contacts, weeks later. This place is closer to my new house than the Pearl Vision in HP so I went here a few weeks ago for the first time, but the way they set up the appointments is total crap. I get my lenses from 800-contacts and needed my prescription updated in order to get a refill, and I told the doctor that when I came in. I paid $45 for a comprehensive eye exam (it's usually $75 but I had a discount as a student.) He gave me the exam, told me what my glasses prescription was, said he'd probably adjust it down a bit for contacts. End of conversation, we chatted for a while and I thanked him and left. Fast forward to today, I was reordering my contacts online and called their office to confirm my prescription. The office manager told me that what I'd had was a glasses consultation, not a contacts consultation, and that to order contacts I need to come back in and pay another $55 for a different exam. I told him that was what I said I wanted in the first place and what I though I was paying for, but he wouldn't budge, no apologies. Whatever, there's no way I'm giving them more money. I'm just going to eat the $45 loss and go back to Pearl. read more

Everyone is very friendly and I thought my exam was thorough and complete. It is clear that they are a business and I guess I expect that from an optometrist so that didn't bother me. I knew exactly what my insurance covered so I kept that in mind while we discussed what I wanted to get. They offered the expensive and the "standard" and I thought were very honest with the differences though obviously trying to make the higher priced option sound a bit more attractive. First off, the office workers are unable or prefer not to communicate with the customers. My son came in for a contact lens fitting and they chose to fitted him for eye glasses. So i made another appt for contact lenses. In the mean while the glasses are in route. The next week my son come in for his contact lens class and nobody in the office told him his glasses arrived. I called the receptionist to ask her why she didnt give his glasses to him while he was there since they just just arrived that day. She had no answer. Im furious now...i then spoke with the manager and he tried to clear it up but only made them look even more incompetent. He told me my son should have asked for the glasses amd that he wasnt taking any blame for anything. My son glasses came on 09/22/12 and he was there in that office for an appt on 09/22/12 Duh!. Real customer service will have been to give the customer his glasses while he was there. The manager has no customer service skills so neither should i expect his workers to. I am done with this office. I will definitely tell all i know to stay away from there. My services were paid in full and wasnt cheap. They claim that once the order leaves their office all they have is communication. Now 3 weeks later their claiming there is a problem with my insurance.
