Only one checker at the noon hour with about 10 customers in line. The only checker was taking her sweet time. I had both hands full (should have taken a cart, but I didn't). Waited over 15 minutes in line. As I was walking out, I was asked for my receipt. At this point I still had both hands full and had placed the receipt in my purse. I just wanted to get out of the store. Would I wait in line for this long to purchase less than $30 worth of goods if I wanted to steal? This store has single-handedly ruined every Ross for me--permanently. I've cracked their genius business model: sell cheap, low-quality junk, wait for people to return it, and then put it right back on the shelf at full price. No markdowns, just the same smudged, cigarette-scented "treasures" someone else already gave up on. The real highlight was the lady at the front desk--let's just say, warmth and professionalism were clearly not on her résumé. She must be in her late 40s or 50s, but any hopes of a pleasant interaction were as flimsy as the furniture I tried to return (which, by the way, was missing hardware and still priced like it was fresh out of the box). Anyway, I thought I'd give it another shot and grabbed a mirror that looked like it might survive the trip home. Spoiler: it didn't even survive the front desk. I lifted it for her to scan, and the paper thin back cracked under its own weight. Her response? Full-on meltdown. She demanded I pay for it and even called security, like I was about to pull off a heist with a broken mirror. Thankfully, the security guard had some common sense and didn't bother. Manager didn't know what to say it seems like she just doesn't have the social skills or something. On top of that one of the shirts marked large is probably TWO SIZES TOO SMALL. The worst Ross to shop at. I stopped by the San Rafael branch since I was in the area. I found a few things I like. One of them was missing a label and it's the last one. I asked the cashier if she could check the price for me. She immediately said she didn't know and can't find out. She instead asked the security guard for the price, who gave two quotes. Really!!? I suggested checking the computer. But, the cashier was lazy and kept mumbling in Spanish as she sighed. I asked for the manager. Someone came by but was not any help either. This other person also asked the security guard for the price. She and the cashier talked in Spanish with annoyed sounds/sighs while supposedly helping me. The only clothing store that is near my place. I like to go to Ross because of its price. This particular store needs extra help to organized the clothing/shoe racks. They have clearance racks but very disorganized. I found clothes that doesn't even belong there. Sometimes, you'll be surprised on what you can find here. You just have to be patient in browsing the clothing racks. I wears size XS/S but I still look at the Medium sizes because some clothes aren't well labeled. "You could pay more... but why?" That's a damn good question! Beats me. I came recently on the hunt for some basic kitchenware in preparation for the Bay Area's shelter-in-place. I figured since I'll be on "house arrest" for at least three weeks, I might as well do some cooking. I swung by this San Rafael location (plenty of free parking here, btw!). I strolled through the empty store and within minutes I found a few pots & pans, a new set of silverware, and a few other cool tchotchkes. And it was all for around $40! Now don't expect to shop here expecting amazing customer service. There are only a few employees working in the store, and they more or less keep to themselves. This store definitely ain't Nordstroms, nor are they pretending to be. That being said, if you know what you're shopping for, you'll be well rewarded, and in and out of there in no time. So whether you're in the market for kitchenware, home accents, or cheap jeans & shoes, Ross has got you covered. Once again, Ross came to my rescue. If I had purchased all the aforementioned items at another store (eg Macy's, Williams Sonoma, Sur La Table, etc.), I would've paid a whole lot more. But why? read more

Apparently this location is not pet friendly despite their website stating they are pet friendly in all of their chai stores and various articles praising them for their pet friendly policy. I was told by the security officer that my two dogs were not welcome unless they were service animals. We were there to purchase dog apparel and other toys (since they have a pet/dog section). We've been coming to this Ross location for years and never had a problem with our pets. We see many other clients walking in with their dogs who are obviously not service pets and they are not told to leave their pets in the car. If you wish to shop with your pet avoid this place unless your pet is a service animal. read more

I was trying to return an item. There were one register open. There were at least 5 other associates standing around near the register. There were at least 10 in line. I told her to get some help with the customers. I asked her why is no one helping her. She told me the 5 associates were on break. She said she can handle it. I told her, but what about the other 10 people on line waiting to get help. Then, the security guard has chimed in. She said that the only person is needed to handle 10 people. I just looked at her and walked out. It's the most terrible customer service I have ever seen. I hope your management see this review and do something about it. read more

I was in this store yesterday and I walked in with my emotional support animal. (I have bad social Anxiety and suffer from panic attacks quiet frequently) we will call this woman the pink lady. She knows who she is. I walked in with my dog and the woman at the front said "oh no animals allowed" I said "this is a pet friendly store" she said with a sassy tone "service animals only did you read the sign" no what sign?! I didnt even see one when I walked in! I checked it and it was a crappy little yellow paper that said "no pets service animals only" i said "well then you need to change your policy on your website!" I told her that my dog was a service dog in training. Which she is. She then said ok and went back to work. Me and my friend walked around the store and I knew I should call corporate so I went back to my car with my dog and sat down to talk with this super sweet woman who apologized after I explained the situation. Now look I understand Ross they dont pride them selves on AMAZING customer service but just dont be rude. So i went back into the store to help my friend and the manager was on the phone with corporate. I could tell the manager didnt have any explanation as to why that sign was up. Me and my friend were walking across the check out table. And oh man the manager asked to see my friends tags from all the stuff she bought and I think she suspected her of stealing their stuff! So we almost walk out the door and this woman asks "are pets allowed?" The same PINK LADY! Says no "only service animals" i turn around and smile to say "no dogs are allowed" and the woman thanks me. I also told the PINK LADY to take down the service dog sign. And then walked out. Now look I know I wasn't the nicest person but if you get treated like trash I think you get where I'm coming from! This cashier was so rude in the way she responded to my complaint like she couldn't care that the company policy is pet friendly! I highly suggest going to the one in Marin city or in Novato! Update: The manager knows me now and I have to call for her every time! The young man at the "loss prevention" doesnt even know company policy! I swear this place is awful! This was our final stop in Marin yesterday. Generally Ross is disheveled and not a pleasant shopping experience. We aren't particularly fond of the one in the El Cerrito Plaza or Emeryville, although we've found useful items at both. Walnut Creek is probably the best location, but this one was a close second. When we walked in we were greeted w/ a friendly smile by a young man who offered us a cart. We didn't think we needed one but later realized we did. Alan was looking for new pants and I was interested in a new set of sheets for the spare bed. He found a pair of pants and I found two sets of sheets. We also found a little set of stainless dishes in a rack for the cat's food and water. I admired an Italianate painted small chest of drawers, but couldn't think of a spot in the house where it would fit. If I could have, it would have come home, as it was very pretty. We got 10% off as it was Tuesday and we're over 55. We'd go back. It's closer than Walnut Creek. read more

They won't show the surveillance video. They won't even confirm the existence of a surveillance video. The parking lot here is really scary. I had someone follow me out to my car and try to talk to me. It was dark and I just could not get out of the area fast enough. The store itself was messy and didn't have much of a selection. Another annoying thing I noticed about this store is that the staff call the next customer even though they are not done with the current transaction. It's really annoying actually. As an example, I will have just entered the pin on my debit card (the receipt hasn't even printed) when they are already saying "Next customer"! Then you feel rushed to put all your stuff away and pick up your bag bcz the next person is like "what's taking you so long!?!?". UGH... And might I add, this isn't just one time. This is the best for clothes, linens, housewares, pots & pans, etc. You have to comb through and try back regularly but every time someone asks about a shirt or dress - I gotta say "I got it at Ross" (you know I dint usually spend more than $14.99 on any one clothing item!) I've been visiting this Ross store for over 4 years, and have seen the place improve slightly, only to become more degraded the next time I visit. Let me first disclose that the employees here have always been pleasant and helpful- even when the holiday lines were full of stressed, irritable, and impatient customers; even when the twin toddlers were screaming and shoplifting toys through the metal detectors; EVEN WHEN a customer was verbally abusive to the Loss Prevention guard- the staff is committed to treating customers nicely. Here, though, are my main gripes about this particular Ross store: - complete and utter disorganization of women's merchandise, especially shoes. Every imaginable shoe in sizes 5 - 7 1/2 will be strewn on the floor or stuffed in random places around the store on any day, I guarantee you. - oddly fluctuating prices for merchandise that aren't consistent with the other Ross stores in Novato and Marin City. - dirty dressing rooms, full of mothballs and hair tumbleweeds, and with only a few stalls containing mirrors inside. A trio of full-length mirrors is for everyone to use at the entrance to the dressing rooms, thankfully. - sketchy parking lot. Enough said. To be honest, I'm far happier driving further south to the Ross store in Marin City, because the women's clothing section there is by far better (in terms of quality and organization) than the one in this sad, seemingly abandoned store. read more

At a recent visit a customer complained about the line and the cashier said that it's hard to get workers because everybody is illegal around here. I say its not worth driving 50 minutes for these items please refund them. Manager asks for receipt #, register # etc and says she will process refund for the items STOLEN from me. I went into this store today and they only had one person working the registe with a long line. Finally after 10 minutes they called someone up to ring. And she came up huffing and puffing rolling her eyes. She yelled next to us so we went up. She snatched our item and we had to make her speak. So unprofessional! She had red dye all over her hands from the hair dye it seemed she put in her hair overnight! Looked horrible on her btw. I came to this Ross in the evening with my husband to find him dress clothes and have never been so rudely treated. My husband wanted to try on a packaged dress shirt that had a security sensor on it preventing anyone from trying it on. We asked the fitting room attendant if she could take it off so he could try the shirt on. She gave a one word answer, " No" with attitude and no explanation. So you have to buy the shirt to try it on? She shrugged and mumbled that we could ask up front. I went up front, asked again if we could have the sensor removed and the security guard Tonya immediately said no. She said if they took the sensor off for me I could steal it. I was a bit taken back, why would I draw attention myself and ask to have a sensor taken off if I wanted to steal a stupid $15 shirt. I asked if she could take the sensor off and take the shirt out of the package and reattach the sensor so he could try it on...."no, you have to buy it." I then walked back to the fitting room to tell my husband and when I get back there the attendant is giggling and making comments into her headset to the people up front. Absolutely unbelievable. Ross may have this unreasonable policy in place but it is the job of a customer service associate to deliver that information in an understanding way. Having been to many Ross stores throughout California, I have to say to say how impressed I was with this San Rafael store. it was obvious that this business has a manager who knows what they are doing. I was beginning to think that "customer service" was the name of a rock band before I entered this store. The entire staff was welcoming, and helpful. Going to Ross is like going to a flea market full of great finds that are brand new. You never know what will be awaiting you. It's the perfect place to find a great gift that's inexpensive but seems expensive...or some kitchenware, or photo frames (I bring photos that I want framed and try them out in the frames - it's fun to do and you end up with the perfect combination), lots of home decor stuff including some furniture, excellent deals on name brand luggage, handbags, laptop cases - and clothes. I prefer clothes in the upscale consignment stores, as it is a little bit more of a treasure hunt feel. But for the rest of the stuff I've mentioned, I can't think of anyplace better to go. They are open late and on Tuesdays seniors, I believe over 50 get 10% off. read more

There are 3 Ross locations in Marin and I feel like they each serve a specific clientele. This one is always understaffed, you walk in and see a security guard and one poor person on register while the line gets pissed off that it's taking so long to get out the door with their purchases. This Ross is a DUMP! Lousy shoe selection, lame home goods selection, and a horrible clothing selection. This store needs to be shut down. It is the most pathetic, sad looking store I have ever seen. It is dirty and disorganized, they use some of the aisles to store rolling merchandise racks making it impossible to shop that aisle. The lighting is horrible, dim and yellowish giving the place a creepy abandoned feel. The merchandise looks like its just been thrown out in the middle of the store with no real rhyme or reason. Flea markets and swap meets are neater and more organized than this place. Even the outside looks sad and dingy. Please put this store location out of it's misery. read more
