    Fried mozzarella sandwich with anchovies.

Another stop on our Secret Food Tour of Venice. At this stop, we sampled Mozzarella in carrozza "La traditionale" al acciuga - fried mozzarella sandwich filled with anchovies, as well as "L'alterniva" al prosciutto - fried mozzarella sandwich filled with anchovies. The bread dough was light, with a nice crunch to the exterior, and the anchovies were mild - not overpowering at all. If we ever make it back to Venice, we'd come here again, as it was nice easy food to take on the go.

This place is absolute mayhem during lunch for good reason. You will see individuals standing up and eating at the counters. The prices are reasonable and there are so many delicious choices. The seafood lasagna was one of the best things I ate in Venice and the mozzarella carrozza is unique and delicious as well. The fried cream dessert was a perfect way to end the meal, it tasted like a cross between a custard and funnel cake!! Also has reasonably priced drinks. This is a MUST try in Venice, you will not regret it.

Items selected: Fried Mozzarella and Sardine Sandwich Beef Arancini Cheese and Tomato Cannelloni Fried Custard Located near Rialto Bridge and known by both the names Rosticceria Gislon as well as Rosticceria San Bartolomeo, the long and narrow space at Calle de la Bissa 5424 has undoubtedly become the rare restaurant as popular with tourists as it is with inhabitants of Venice, the combination of Deli, Salads, Pasta and Streetfood one of the rare "deals" in the area with fast food that is actually worth waiting in line for. Owned and operated by the same family since its inception in the 1930's, though a mid-90's overhaul has rendered the space inside more modern than some, a cursory look from the outside may lead many to believe Rosticceria Gislon is little more than a slightly-more-busy version of several similar restaurants in Venice's central tourist district, though those willing to step inside will be quick to realize that the combination of high volume and quick turnover leads to items far more fresh than the alternatives, the "fast food" cafeteria concept convenient for those able to snag a stool or those choosing to grab and go. Divided into two distinct sections, made-to-order hot plates, Salumi, Appetizers and Salads at the left with warming baskets of Street-food, Sandwiches, Pizza and baked Pastas at the right, it was with a focus on the latter that this particular visit was made to the Rosticceria, a total of four choices confirming rumors that the food far outperforms the modest pricepoint, a total of just €7 exchanged for easily a pound of food, first bites of the fried Cannelloni showing a crisp shell give way to creamy filling with the acidic zing of Tomato Sauce. Anticipating a few more stops on the day and thus cutting the order short of Baccala, Lasagna and Blood Sausage that all tempted with scratch construction of everything in-house, further tastes of Gislon's goods consisted of a meaty Arancini that was good, though I'd have preferred the Fish version they were sold out of, a Mozzarella in Carrozza with Sardines unfortunately a bit greasy though rich in flavor and textural variations while Fried Custard gained all its sweetness from Granulated Sugar, the base itself sort of like the Catalana versions found in Spain with a gentle spring to the tooth but not a lot of intrinsic flavor by itself.

This was probably one of the most unique places we dined in the whole entire Italy trip. Rosticceria Gislon is a popular deli specialising in seafood in a serviced buffet counter style varying from little balls of fried fish (frittos), whole fish to pastas, salads and set meals. It is usually full of locals and tourist. Finding a seat is really hard as there are not many in the deli section. To save on service charge many people just dine at the counter. Of course if you want waiter service and a more comfortable place to seat, especially those with young children, then head upstairs to the restaurant that sells exactly the same stuff. Be aware that there is nearly always a queue. For those who don't speak English might want to research the menu beforehand or just point and choose to whatever takes your fancy on the day like what we did. There is no English menu, that is for sure. Frittos In the fried section we had some fried olives, mozzarella with ham and seafood arancini. The olives were a bit too dry for me and the batter being too thick and dense. The fried mozzarella and ham were truly amazing. The pastry was doughy and soft, incasing a lovely piece of chewy milky cheese and fresh ham. Highly recommended. The risotto ball had the essence of sweet seafood throughout. The batter was crispy and thin going into a really creamy al dente texture inside. It was full of flavour, complex without being overpowering or fishy. Risotto de pesce This was lovely and al dente. For something that was prepared in large batches and then dished out beforehand was surprisingly very good, with lovely essence of fish. It was thick, sticky and creamy and seasoning was spot on Gnocchi al ragu This was a very simple dish. A bit scarce on the minced meat and lacked complexity but still lovely in texture and carried enough flavour to enjoy. Baccala con polenta A very new texture of cod for me. Soft flakey salted cod mashed with cream and potatoes and served with polenta. The flavours were light and the texture of the whole dish was very soft and creamy. It is a delicious way to enjoy cod. Simple seasoning and went well with the bouncy firm polenta that had the consistency of glutinous rice cake. I really loved Rosticceria San Bartolomeo and will be willing to go through with the hectic no queue system in ordering and then patiently wait for a space to eat it. Why? Because it's the only place where I felt i was eating some of the more traditional and authentic foods in Venice among the locals. As hectic as it was it felt lively and staff were passionate. Weirdly, once we finished our lunch we couldn't wait to leave and give our seat to a couple who had been standing there waiting the whole entire time we were eating.

It's a small deli style place with reasonable price menu We had the mushroom pizza and a place of grilled vegetables. The pizza was quite good, and the crust is firm. Grilled vegetables were on salty side.

Considering the price, it's definitely worth going. However, the foods may not meet your expectation if you are looking for a luxury experience in Venice. For me, I feel that Pepsi is too expensive (€2.3) and not refillable, and the seafoods are usually not soft and fresh enough.

A must stop! Great calamari and fresh salads, home made lasagna and more. Excellent food and the staff is friendly and speaks English.

Great place for a bite and a drink. Not a typical sit down restaurant. There an awesome Gelato place right next door.

Lots and lots of restaurants to choose from in Venice but this unassuming restaurant is a true gem…read more It's easy to miss as it's tucked in a corner right by a bridge. Once inside they have a couple tables with small window views of any gondolas passing by. We started off with a plate of lightly fried sardines topped with pickled white onions. The fry on the fish was super light and those vinegar-y onions were the perfect pairing. We cleaned that plate. The lasagna was well balanced with the meat, sauce, cheese. The squid ink pasta was chewy/al dente with a subtle touch of seafood flavors giving the cuttlefish. It was very umami but nothing too overbearing. Delicious! It's a Family business that was been around for many years. Grazie to the friendly staff and chef!

The jovial mood with the waiters with big personalities is gone. The menu you can find online is no longer available so you get a very limited menu to choose from--nearly entirely seafood. So if you have anyone in your party that just wants pasta with a red meat sauce or a non seafood lasagne, not available. We were a party of 8. Two people ordered the scallop appetizers. Pretty presentation on shells. 3 tiny scallops in the shells. More like an amuse bouche. Totally disappointing. The linguine with clams as an entree had clams so small you almost needed a magnifying glass to see them. Couldn't taste the clams and annoying to try to eat something so tiny , and just try to eat the pasta with all those tiny shells. The baby shrimp on polenta was actually good. But again the shrimp were like tiny hatchlings tempura battered. Tasted okay except for those that were soggy from the polenta that was very soupy. I wanted the gnocchi with crab which was on the very limited menu but no longer available. The alternative was gnocchi with a sea bass sauce which I chose but didn't like at all. The gnocchi were good but the sauce wasn't at all for me. We had to continue to ask for side dishes for the bread, butter, olive oil, salt and pepper. We will not return. Poor value for your money. Plus there is a cover charge and service included in your bill which was a surprise. Very sad to see our favorite Venetian restaurant decline so much.
