Found this restaurant on trip advisor on day 2 of our 4-day stay in Venice. Was a little tricky navigating google maps to find due to poor reception on gps, but eventually we found it along a narrow corridor close to San Marco Square. Be aware there are 4 restaurants adjacent to each other, we originally mistook another one for Al Chianti, the waiter said it was this restaurant but it was in fact Al Specchierie - very shady. Unfortunately it was quickly obvious something strange was going on by the disheveled appearance of the second waiter who brought our lukewarm bottled water. Due to our uneasiness we decided to pay for the water and leave. You can imagine our surprise when we discovered the restaurant we were looking for was right next door. I wonder how many other visitors have encountered this deception. We were happy to find an available table, it was fairly early around 7pm. We opted for inside seating versus the patio because of the awkwardness of us leaving the restaurant right next door and the mosquitos that seem to be dominant in Venice in the late evening. Once settled we were ready to order and begin enjoying our meal. The seafood pasta was apparently amazing, along with delicious calamari, pizza and pasta. The waiters were super friendly and during our visit the restaurant filled with, what seemed to be local patrons, some evidence of the quality and hospitality. The meal was finished with cappuccino, the consensus was this restaurant is solid and a good choice based on value, service and food quality. read more

Both the service and the food at Al Chianti are excellent! It's a family-owned restaurant that gives the owner ample reason to take pride in the staff -they're all very welcoming and friendly :-) Tip: Far too many restaurants in Venice nickel and dime you to death with extra charges; Al Chianti doesn't - just fair prices for good food Al Chianti is located just a short walk from St. Mark's Square; there are lots of shots nearby. Venice was incredibly crowded when I visited in July, so finding this quieter restaurant close to Piazza San Marco was a relief. Al Chianti is on the smaller side with only a few tables inside and on the patio. However, that means you don't have to fight the crowd for food or service, which was attentive and friendly. My brother and I tried the spaghetti carbonara, which was delicious and came with chunks of smoky, fatty pork. The waiter also topped it with fresh parmesan for extra flavor. We liked that the spaghetti had plenty of cheesy and porky flavor without being super heavy. read more

Thanks Yelpers for guiding me in Venice to this really nice Italian restaurant. We had a bad experience last night without any research and once again Yelp has saved us!! We came here for lunch yesterday. The place was small but the tables were spaced out nicely so not super cramped. You must try their fish bowl - fresh seafood including clams, mussels, shrimp and swordfish...and the soupy sauce was amazing! And the pizza was also very good! The location is perfect as it is close to the main tourist attraction in Venice - St. Mark's Square. So if you're planning you're trip, be sure to stop here for lunch or dinner. read more

Super nice. Very cozy with a relaxing atmosphere. After a long day of traveling these dishes hit the spot. The spaghetti w/ pesto had the perfect balance, spaghetti w/ carbonara was uniquely rich yet light. I would also highly suggest ordering the bruschetta as an appetizer, it really sets the tone for the meal. Update!! We couldn't leave San Marcos without coming back here on our last night. This time we knew what to expect but we loved it all the same. Possibly even more. The owner is so kind and genuine with all of his customers. Disappointing. First of all in this over commercialized city of venice, I didn't expect to get good food. Even with in mind, I feel the need to advise against this place. This is the worst food I've had on this Italy trip. We never got our bread, the grilled sole was flavorless and very fishy (no lemon on the side to cover the fishyness so we actually had to salt and pepper it to get some flavors). Pasta with seafood is quite bland. Lasagna didn't have enough tomato sauce but was alright. read more

When you're hungry in one of the most tourist-soaked places in the world it can be hard to figure out what's good! We were steps from San Marco and "interviewed" a few of the restaurants in the strip. I whipped out my phone and saw that this place had many reviews and over 4 star average. I also saw a pasta come out and it looked delicious and huge, lol. SOLD!!! Where can we sit?!! My pasta I ate here has been the best pasta of this whole trip to Italy (a plate of creamy strozzapreti in Bologna gets an honorable mention, hehe). The gnocchi were delicious too. I recommend making a reservation for dinner as they are quite busy. I absolutely loved this restaurant! The food was absolutely delicious! The restaurant itself was clean and had people gathered inside as I went up to grab a table. We did not need a reservation here after trying a couple different restaurants prior. The reviews here were good so we decided to try it out. We got vegetable soup, calamari, spaghetti, and a steak. Nothing was specifically bad but everything was just okay. Everything was under seasoned. My boyfriend said the steak was " the most whatever steak" he's had. It would have got a better rating if not for the prices, it was far too expensive for the quality we got. If you are wondering if this is a tourist trap, let me just say this. This place is one alley away from the most touristy spot in Venice. We only decided to eat here because we were too tired and didn't want to spend energy looking for another place. - spaghetti with bolognese sauce tasted like home made (by me, that is). Actually, no, mine is better. - lasagne tasted like frozen food - Pretended to gave us free bread, but then charged €4 for it. When we asked what the line item on the check is, they tried to blame us saying, we checked with you. No you didn't. We would not pay €4 for stale bread. - the bread basket consisted of 2-3 stale dinner rolls and 2 plastic bags of the long crispy bread sticks. I saw them put the unopened breadstick bags from someone's table back to the pile. Our basket which had 1 leftover roll was put on the bread table when they were cleaning up. I can only assume they were planning to put the bread roll, which we had touched with our hands, back into the pile that would be destined for others. read more

By far the best food we've had in Venice! The pasta was amazing!! Along with the service. We started with the pesto spaghetti then moved on to the Carbonara but changed the pasta from spaghetti to tagliatelle. We closed out the pasta experience with the four cheese ñoquis(not photographed)! For dessert (always a must) we had the home-made tiramisu and the chocolate panna cotta. We came here after reading some reviews on Yelp. We asked to be seated right out front and the atmosphere was great. Waiters were great and friendly. It wasn't one of those places that they try to bring you in. We walked up. We started with an appetizer of Grilled Octopus. It was cooked just right. Our entrees were Gnocchi, Seafood Spaghetti, Ravioli and Chili Pepper spaghetti. They were delicious. We had limoncello shots for dessert. We stopped by Al Chianti on our first night in Venice based on reviews from Yelp and TripAdvisor (ugh, yeah I know...) and we're very happy with our evening. Al Chianti is on a row of restaurants in a somewhat touristy area of Venice (yeah, I know, Venice is touristy in general, but near San Marco Piazza is worst). If you were walking by it, you might never notice it. Inside is a cute, small and slightly cramped Italian restaurant with a simple menu that happened to be filled with traditional flavors and styles. We had the Mixed Salad, Pesto Spaghetti, and 4-cheese Gnocchi. Everything was exactly as I expected. Why do I say that? Well, I grew up in an Italian-American household and this reminded me of home. Simple, delicious pasta dishes with food flavor and a nice wine selection. A few notes, the staff are very Italian, meaning they are mostly responsive, just don't expect super-attentive levels of service. And it can be a little cramped. And they don't speak too much English. Did any of that frighten you away? No? Great! Go check it out! Actually, as this was the first place we ate in Venice, I've been sitting on this review to see if Al Chianti holds up after a few visits to some other places, and you know what? It's does! Actually a 4.5... I believe was the best meal we had in Venice. The service was great, all of them were always trying to make us feel comfortable and even trying to speak with us in Spanish. It was also the most expensive dinner we've had here but we went all the way ordering the finest dishes hahaha. The place is very casual and small, you can even confuse it with the restaurant next door, but is somehow cozy. - Appetiser: we ordered wild pig prosciutto with pecorino cheese. It was an interesting antipasto. The flavour of the prosciutto is strong, but we liked it, it was nice to try something different. - Main: we ordered a lasagna and the fettuccine lobster. The lasagna was really good, I wanted to try an Italian lasagna before leaving and I was no disappointed. A block away from st marks plaza and on a long street filled with restaurants and shops. Note for travelers: be prepared to pay for your water. They only do bottled water here. Al Chianti was the best meal we had in Venice! After a few not-so-great meals in Venice, we searched Yelp to find somewhere with good pasta. Al Chianti didn't disappoint. My Mom chose the lobster pasta, I ate my one non-vegetarian meal of our vacation with the seafood pasta, and my Aunt had the carbonara. All three of us happily ate our food quickly when it came pipping hot to the table. The seafood pasta was everything I was hoping for since I hadn't eaten meat in a long time. My aunt also loved the carbonara, and my mom said her pasta was good too but would have been a little better with a bit more sauce. We also had really great wine and good service as well. We also split desserts, but I only remember the tiramisu because that's all I care about :) It was good, and I remember my mom and aunt liking whatever they split. We also finished the meal with cappuccinos, which were good as well. Giving 3 star because the wait staff was great. We got a free pizza appetizer that was better than anything we ordered. I regret not ordering pizza for the main course. I would have been much happier and spent half the money. We ordered the fettuccini with lobster (most expensive dish on the menu) and gnocchi in bolognese. The gnocchi was good, not great. The lobster was over cooked a little bit rubbery and hard to cut with a knife. The fettuccini was way to salty.
