Yes, Marty is a bit quirky and there is no signage indicating where the business is (look for the black mailbox marked 2727) but he is very knowledgeable and has a large variety of plants and trees. I was looking for podocarpus trees which Marty had posted on Craigslist. I didn't realize his business was by appointment only, but he graciously helped me anyway. Since Marty is a grower, he picked out 8 beautiful and well-matched trees from his stock and helped me load them. If you can't find what you are looking for, give Marty a call.

I think they understand Spanish better, so we exchange some greetings in my native language;). Lots of greenery but, as others have commented, a bit on the rundown side. There was a food truck which was a nice touch. Parking was easy at the corner, although it is easy to miss. I will go back, is a different kind of nursery I would say.

Instead you have a natural setting consisting of large trees, meandering paths and a few live animals to keep you entertained while you shop for things for your own home or garden. Unfortunately, we lived in Encinitas so the climate didn't allow the avocado to thrive but she loved getting Asian/Hawaiian plants, and fruits from this nursery. The scene that will greet you is a dirt path and two-sided parking spaces. Try them, very wooded and dense, like you are in the forest, which I loved since I am from back East and we have huge trees and green wooded areas. The staff are very knowledgeable and the value is great. If your plant doesn't grow, call them, and they guide you or replace the plant. I love this place. If I had a house, I would be here for my roses and fruit plants.

It's usually fine but I see people on other reviews have come in from far away without calling and it's just a good idea to call if it's a mom and pop nursery and you have a long drive. My favorite fruit was white sapote, cherimoya, the bazillions of types of guavas they have, ice cream bean was delicious, and I never knew palms have delicious fruit (what????). I come about twice a year from San Diego and as San Diego nurseries go, this place is in a league of its own. When arriving, I went to the restroom to pee (I am 67 and have prostate issues, and just wanted to be comfortable while I shopped) and, seeing a sign on both the outside and inside that said "Please keep the door shut - because of A/C" and seeing a lock, I locked the door for privacy (too). There is just urinal and one stall. When I was standing at the urinal there was suddenly the loudest banging on a door I'd ever heard in my life. I thought it must be some kind of emergency so I went, holding my pants up, since I didn't have time to zip them. I opened it, and said "What's up?!" and the young man with dark green Green Thumb shirt - heavyset, brown hair, 30/40-ish? - said very aggressively, yelling, "It's a public restroom, that's why theres more than one stall !!!" and proceeded to wash in the sink for 5 minutes or so (I retreated to the stall to try and finish my business). So... because there' a urinal and a stall you are not supposed to lock it? Why is there a lock? I don't get it... He must have either been having a very very bad day, was mentally unbalanced, or just a ver very angry person. I was in shock. I think it's time to find another nursery...

Pay the register, drive around to the loading zone and they load the bags into your car for you. I love to come here during bareroot season (Jan-March). They carry a huge variety of tree, berries, grapes, and although the plants cost more than your big box store but there is a huge difference in quality. Large selection of roses in late May, early June. It's fun to shop here. Some of the nursery has uneven ground or loose gravel so be mindful. We came in at the very beginning of landscaping a new build, which meant a blank slate and a lot of questions. Nathan took the time to walk us around the yard, show us what was available, and give us real options instead of just pointing at whatever he wanted to move that day. He was genuinely knowledgeable about the plants, what they would do in our space, and what made sense for the look we were going for. He was also friendly and understanding about our budget and our timeline, which we appreciated. We started with a variety of plants to get the project going, and we have gone back several times since for trees and shrubs. Every visit has been the same experience: good advice, no pressure, and someone who clearly enjoys what he does. Great guy to work with. If you are planning a landscape project, ask for Nathan.

Can't say enough good things about Moon Valley and our experience picking out our Meyer Lemon tree…read moreand Bouganvilleas. Patrick came over last month and helped us plant both trees and gave us some awesome tips on upkeep. For the Meyer tree he suggested a nitrogen-rich fertilizer and a well-draining acidic soil. We went with an organic soil from Kellogg Gardens, and added Perlite as he suggested. The tree seems happy and we're seeing about a 4 inch growth already. For the Bougainvillea, he suggested planting in the ground. We dug a hole twice as wide as the root ball, left the plant in its original plastic grow pot, and just cut off the bottom and slashed the sides. Moon Valley and Patrick's attentive service and help really has brought our little patio garden to life.
