There is a new menu now which has completely changed the way I feel about Rothrock. I decided to give it a chance because maybe they changed the menu for the better but sadly this is not the case. Definitely a fan of this place - I really liked my Thai ice tea and their kombucha and cold pressed juice selection was great as well. Had two sandwiches (blt and turkey) and they were both good, as was the açaí bowl. Prices are reasonable and the establishment was clean. I'll definitely be back for more drinks and food in the near future! They have some sort of rewards program which doesn't seem hard to accrue points for (already have $5 off for my next visit after one trip) and it looks like if you're a first timer you can get a coupon for a free coffee if you provide your email. read more

Came here for study session one Saturday morning. The options for coffee were somewhat limited in my opinion. I could say this coffee shop is gearing toward tasting pure coffee and isn't into fancy drinks. For me, this is good. Particularly since they roast their own beans (!!!) however I wonder if the art is a bit wasted in a college town as most students want a Starbucks type drink. So depending on your prefer beware. I opted for a chai latte. With almond milk. The latte itself was 4 dollars and a substitute of milk was one dollar. Plus a one dollar tip. So my total was 6$! I thought that was pretty overpriced... 1 dollar to switch milks... seriously?? It would have been okay if the chai had been tasty... for me it wasn't. It was very very spiced. I'm just guessing that it was loose leaf steeped or steamed with milk, then strained? Maybe this is traditional, I'm not sure. Unlike my coffee, I do like and expect my chai to be sweet. My fault for not asking what it would be like I suppose. Next time though I definitely stick with coffee since that seems to be their jam. Avocado toast looked super yummy and seemed to be better priced. My only other complain is that the place was freezing. Like distractingly cold. Made it hard to get work done. Rothrock coffee has everything from lattes, cold brew/nitro, tea, matcha lattes, affogatos, espresso.... their menu is highly caffeinated and highly addictive. Thier sweet pastries are delectable and their merchandise is nothing but awesome. Rothrock has my complete and utter loyalty, and I love the work they produce. This is a much needed coffee shop that has been lacking in state college. The inside is very spacious. Lots of chairs and tables to study. The coffee is also pretty solid. Great coffee and brewing choices served in mugs of sipping on site. Ordered a croissant and wished they had offered butter, jelly, ham or the very least warmed it up a bit. Music was a tad loud. I really like everything about Rothrock except for the prices. I always feel satisfied with my food and drinks from here but I also feel a bit uneasy spending so much a coffee or toast. It is also absurd to me that they charge $1 extra for alternative milk choices... When I do want to splurge a bit my go to is the ahi tuna toast. My mom is OBSESSED with the avocado toast. Their smoothies are to die for (my favorite is the protein berry but they are all great!) Overall, everything is delicious and the service is good. read more

Today, sitting up at the bar with my drink, working on my computer, I watched a young worker accidentally spill what looked to be more than a gallon of steaming hot water on himself. I sat on a high stool at the coffee bar just a few feet away so all this was very clear (other customers were sitting at the tables on the floor). While he held onto the counter, his face contorted in pain, steam still rising from his shorts, another young worker went in the back to get help. Two older people, a bearded man and the woman manager, came walking out, carrying rags. They both got busy cleaning the water on the floor. I saw no one with him. He was still gripping onto the counter. The bearded man then went into the back again. Came out soon with a plate of toast--took it to a customer. The manager went to make a coffee drink. I went over to tell her that was the accident looked serious. That the water was very hot. She said yes, and then she said that the water also contained a chemical that could make a burn worse. !!! I said, someone needs to help him. Get cool water on that. She nodded and thanked me. Kept making drink. I moved down and told the person who had had the accident the same. You might want to get some cool water on that. He eventually made his way down the hallway to the bathroom behind me. Everyone working there kept working. I got up to leave and started to talk to the two young workers (an option was to speak to the owner? and manager but I do think it's important for workers to expect their employers to put their well-being before a customer's piece of toast, which is how I put it. And workers should also know that most customers think that their lives, workers' lives, are more important than, again, a piece of toast. Manager came out. I repeated this to her. That it was very upsetting to see such a callous response from those in charge to a worker who had just had an accident like that. That workers' well-being should come first. Again I ask, is any one checking on him? The manager says that the injured worker told her that "he just needed a minute" (so everything was ok?) Hard to believe that a coffee shop owner and manager appeared not to have any idea how to respond to an accident involving scalding water. I said you have a responsibility to put your workers' well-being first. She responded "you just do you." Bearded man came and said, about me, "let her say whatever she wants to say. Whatever." I give 4 stars to any coffee shop who roasts their own beans and doesn't buy them. I should have Yelped "coffee" upon arrival in State College to see who was new in town, as I have been missing this great little place for three whole days and had to choke down some DD coffee in the interim. All said, my first cup, but not my last cup, was delightful. Nothing extraordinary, but I will return to try other roasts. The cappuccino machine at our usual place was broken so we tried this place. The first thing you notice here is this coffee shop is very clean and the employees are friendly and upbeat. My cappuccino was a work of art with two hearts in the froth. The coffee they use is very mild and smooth. It was good but I like mine to be bold with a 'bite.' The biscotti was good but not exceptional. I can see how a lot of people like this place. My preference is for a little different style of coffee. read more

Such a cute place in state college and their coffee stands up too! They roast in house and everything I've tried has been good. A nice variety of coffee making supplies are also available for purchase (chemex, filters, aeropress, tampers, burr grinders etc) they also have a line of branded merch like shirts, water bottles and mugs. I recently moved to State College to start a new job, and it was absolutely essential to me to find the best places for craft coffee. When I was interviewing, Rothrock hadn't opened yet; and so once I did arrive, and heard about this spot that roasted its own beans, I knew that I had to try it. Rothrock has quickly become my go-to place in town for artisanal coffee. One of Rothrock's best features is its multiple brewing methods. I subsisted over the summer on their nitro-tap cold brew coffee, which had the consistency of a nicely poured Guinness and the best flavor of any nitro option in town. But they also do pour overs, and if you ask for it off-menu, French press, Chemex, and Aeropress. The baristas clearly know what they're talking about with pairing specific beans to brew styles, as some have recommended that I use Chemex for some beans, etc. If you're more into espresso-based drinks, the macchiatos and cortados are also executed quite well, with nice latte art design. The coffee itself is good. It's nice to see the Probat coffee roaster working in the back, and to see the rotating bean selections (my current favorite being the Ethiopia GERA, which has notes of blueberry). Although they do seem to have a "core" staple of offerings, the changing new selections suggest that there will be much variety in what coffee is offered. The environment is minimalist and tasteful, with tons of open spaces to sit and stand to work, and usually some good music playing. The space itself reminds me of coffee shops in Chicago and San Francisco, and this urban quality is one of the nicest features of Rothrock, especially in a smaller town like State College. The customer service is top notch too--the baristas are very friendly, and thus, although this has the feel of an urban coffee shop, it conveys the warmth of a small-town community. And they serve food. My 4-year-old son discovered the glories of biscotti there and it's now become one of his major food groups. I wish they had a few more protein-centered options, but I've heard good things about the avocado toast. I look forward to seeing how Rothrock evolves and rolls out new coffee varieties, and appreciate their attempt to elevate coffee culture in town. I'll be returning there often. read more

We came across this café, and afterward both of us were giddy about how good it was; coffee so delicious that I bought the beans, and really great service. Weird way to start a four-star review of a coffee shop: I don't like their (plain, decaf) coffee. Went roaring way past rich, dark roast/strong and straight into bitter-without-underlying-flavors-or-interest territory. But the space is nice. Open, feels industrial. Good for working. There's not a ton of seating but it's not that big a space. Classic rock on the radio. Not my favorite for working, but certainly fine. Not distracting at least. The one glaring issue I noticed: no outlets. I use an older laptop when I work outside my home, and the battery doesn't last. I only found one seat in the vicinity of an outlet (which fortunately was unoccupied). I saw no other outlets along the wall where nearly all the seating is located. I think the ability to charge up is pretty much expected at this point, especially in a place where people plan to work. Even bars have outlets for charging devices now, and I was quite surprised to see this lack. Staff is nice and friendly, getting their feet under them. There are no other coffee shops in this immediate vicinity, so I'm glad this place showed up. Someday I'll have to branch out and try a drink that actually requires some skill to make- maybe I'll have better luck. read more

I walked in around lunch time and it. was. packed. Luckily they all had their coffee already so there was no line. The flavor of the coffee was great and the size was actually a true cappuccino which is something you don't find often in the US. All of the coffees I've been getting are those Starbucks "tall" size which is too much for me. I have a sensitive stomach, so I found the coffee to be too acidic, but the flavor was good and I would definitely come again if I was ever in town. read more

Was there on Valentine's Day with my wife to grab some coffee. Staff were super friendly and helpful with helping us choose the perfect drink for our little date. They got everything out in a reasonable amount of time considering how busy it was and how understaffed it is. Unfortunately, there were some very rude customers that were unnecessarily berating and harassing the staff for being slow. I used to come here midday in high school for about two years. The coffee great, and the avocado toast revolutionary; I live in LA and to this day nowhere beats Rothrock. The only negative experience I had here was once in 2016 the next day after Trump won the election and I was physically harassed in the shop before I went to class. A Trump supporter grazed my breast and shouted "Trump Train!" The barista working whooped "hell yeah!" And never intervened in this sexual assault. I reported it to the store owners, in hopes it wouldn't happen to another customer, and never got a response or support.
