It apparently wasn't getting pumped to the sand mount. I had Young's Septic come in. They diagnosed the issue as a broken pump. They drained the tank, charging me about $350 (fair price), and then gave me an estimate for $2100 for a new pump. I thanked their tech, Randy, and told him that I wanted to get a couple of estimates first. He had a look in his eyes of surprise, and then told me that the tank will fill up very quickly, so I should plan to stay at a hotel. Seemed a little pushy, since I was going to immediately call others to check on the pricing for the new Here are the prices I found along with a description of the job: -0.5 HP Gold's brand pump / 120 volt -Single man job -Not "confined space" job, i.e. the person can reach into the tank and doesn't need to climb in, which requires 2 men, and a confined space meter to check for toxic gas. Dillsburg septic - $1400 - $1800 Young's - $2100 Stinky Finky (R E Fink & Sons) - $1090 Walter's - $1095 - $2000 I called Young's back and gave them an opportunity to match the price or at least get closer to it, and was told that the owner would call me back. He never did. Brandt at R E Fink wasn't only the lowest price, but told me he could make it out the next morning. Sold. After opening up our tank, Brandt's tech, Jack reported back to him, and Bran called me with good news. He said that the only problem with my pump is that the floater is broken. It was going to cost me less than $300! He also said that my pump was only 0.3 HP, and not 0.5 as Young's had stated. I told Brandt that I needed a new pump and we agreed on $1090, but he had the morality to report back that I didn't need a new pump, and accepted much less money in return for his honesty. Brandt is a stand-up guy, and R E Fink is a stand-up company. I'm not sure what happened with Young's. Maybe they made 3 coincidental mistakes, misdiagnosing the issue, mistakenly seeing the pump as 0.5 HP rather than 0.3 HP, and then charging a ridiculous price for a pump? Are they really a good company? You make your own decision based on these facts.

Have used Central Penn for both preventative maintenance and plumbing repairs, and they are very…read moreprofessional and note pricing up front. Based on previous experience and calling around to other plumbers, I believe their preventative maintenance is reasonably priced ($125 for 'spring maintenance'). For repairs, they charge a 'trip fee' ($65 at the time of this writing) just to come to diagnose the problem, which again, is about in line with industry standards (some plumbing companies I called were a little cheaper while others were more expensive), though I did find one area plumbing company that will waive their trip fee if they do the repair (David Long in New Cumberland). To me, that's the most reasonable policy. We recently had Central Penn come out to the house due to an issue with our shower plumbing. The handle to turn the water on/off became impossible to turn in one direction. The issue was diagnosed as a bad cartridge, and the technician had the correct part to fix it, which he did in about 15 minutes. At the same time, we had him check our kitchen faucet, which had also had some leaking. This got a little more complicated because of a 'nut' that wouldn't release (no fault of Central Penn), and the technician had to call the manufacturer for instructions because the faucet was under warranty. Acting upon those instructions, we had to wait a day or so for a part to come in, and the initial attempt to make the repair failed (as the technician had suspected it might), so the tech called Moen again to get a different part. Unfortunately, at this point, the kitchen faucet was no longer useable. To make a long story short, due to a large party we were having over the weekend and the lack of availability of a tech to fix the problem prior to said party, I ended up doing the repair myself with the part Moen had shipped to the plumber (I live about 10 minutes from the business, so was able to pick it up), and ultimately, I paid Central Penn about $330 and the only thing we had to show for it was the repaired shower handle (again, a 15 minute job). Throughout the process, the technician was professional and worked with the manufactuer directly rather than making me contact them, which was appreciated, though I did end up having to talk to them myself to get the parts delivered prior to the weekend party (not knowing Central Penn wouldn't be available to do the fix until afterward). In summary, Central Penn was quick to respond to our call, very professional, and discussed pricing up front, but in the end, we paid quite a bit of money and had little to show for it, so we'll probably give someone else a try next time those dreaded words "honey, call the plumber" are uttered in the house. In general, a cheaper route is to use a plumber who is not part of a larger company, but then you will likely not get the response time required to fix the issue quickly. Update 4/14 - Owner of the company, working with Moen, has offered us a new faucet free of charge because he wasn't happy with how this situation was handled. It's the effort companies apply in trying to keep customers happy that separates one from another. Don't know if we'll go for the new faucet, but I've changed my previous opinion, and we'd certainly be willing to use Central Penn again.

Years of solid service, then one maintenance visit, $5k in avoidable damage, and selective silence…read morelater... I used them happily for years on a bi-annual plan with zero issues and would have recommended them without hesitation. That changed after our late-January routine maintenance visit. Shortly after, the AC froze for the first time ever, thawed, and flooded the hallway with significant property damage. A second Central Penn tech came out, flagged restricted return airflow, and recommended adding another return. We got the estimate, requested minor changes for a revised quote - and never received one. During that window of waiting on the quote, the unit froze a second time. Only then did I bring in a 2nd independent licensed HVAC contractor, who discovered the blower fan speed was set incorrectly for the system. Combined with the restricted airflow from the vent being bolted and taped shut, this incorrect and overlooked fan speed was gradually destroying the equipment. Two unit freeze-ups, two Central Penn visits, property damage and two additional visits and repairs from a 2nd contractor left me roughly $5k out of pocket for problems that appear to have started the moment their first tech left in January. * First tech left the filter access door taped and bolted shut, restricting airflow. * Second tech correctly noted the restricted return air but somehow never noticed (or checked) that the blower fan speed was set incorrectly for the system (which one can only assume was correctly set prior to the January visit). At that visit I was given no warning to stop using the unit or any indication that continued operation could cause further damage as every previous visit stated the unit was in correct working order. * When I followed up via email afterwards with a full overview of the situation, they agreed to refund their follow-up visit to the bi-annual maintenance check (which I'm still waiting on the actual money from) I simply asked whether bolting/taping a filter door shut is standard procedure and whether techs routinely verify blower speed. That email has now gone 2+ weeks unanswered. Hard not to read the silence as an unwillingness to acknowledge either issue because of the liability it would create. I'm not asking for perfection. I'm asking that multiple paid maintenance visits catch the obvious things that can destroy an HVAC system, let alone most likely having the techs creating the issues, and that a long-time customer at least get a straight answer when things go sideways. Received our quote next day with recommendation. Going to try trench-less repair and worse case scenario. Had to wait till Monday for local/state to come and mark the property for digging protocol. Tuesday they were here early AM. Found kinks in line, can't run the trench-less. Worse case scenario. By the afternoon, water back on. The digging only left a small imprint on the lawn. Received our bill a few days later. Under budgeted quote. (Slightly). But under quote after worse case scenario = Priceless. Great job and Thsn you! Many years ago I worked for a plumbing company so I knew right off the bat this would be thousands to repair. With my go to (Ranck's Plumbing) no longer in business I had no choice but to seek a new plumber, one that had a sewer camera, and could come right away. An online search of plumbers with cameras yielded very few results in my area. I called a few and left messages. Ober's was a company I found on Yelp for having good & honest reviews and they were local which was a huge plus. I took a chance on them having a camera and was thankful that they did. Jerry, the owner was awesome! He even came to my house for a free consult to make sure he could run the camera before he sent his crew over - that was much appreciated! My house is almost 100 years old so there was some fear of the unknown. At the free consult he spent a considerable amount of time exploring possible scenarios and discussing options. Jerry is very hands on and explains things in a way you can understand without judgement. Once he determined the camera could be ran I provided the key and returned to work. Jerry and his crew did the rest. Within hours I had a verbal quote. Was it expensive? Yes, spending a few thousand for something you can't see is alot of money, but sewer is a necessity. Although I don't have anything to compare it to other than my experience in this field many years ago I do feel his price was fair and most likely considerably less than what larger firms would charge for the same scale of work. I especially liked that Jerry understood that I wanted the least invasive option available and was sensitive to my request not rip out my newer kitchen to gain access. To save money hubby did some of the demo with Jerry's instruction. Since we're talking about a considerable amount of money I didn't feel comfortable with a verbal quote alone. However once I requested one in writing Jerry provided one the next day in great detail. The work took a few days to complete, and a few days till they could start due to some issues with our insurance adjuster. During that time-period Jerry was always accessible, answered all of our questions, and took our many phone calls without issue or attitude. Once the insurance adjuster was out of the way he was prompt to get us on the schedule so we could have use of our facilities again. The work was completed as promised and my house was left in satisfactory condition. While they did comply with my request to lock up daily, a light was left on the first day. So why 4 stars instead of 5? I always feel a little uncomfortable asking for something that I feel should be standard (in this case a written quote). They do things old school so they couldn't email the quote but were able to fax it. The price of running the camera is expensive and it's standard procedure to record the process to show the homeowner exactly what the problem is. While they do have the camera they don't use the video and didn't relay this to me until I asked. While I'm so thankful for Jerry and his team and to have this experience in my rear view window I would/will use Ober's again and would happily recommend him to anyone seeking an honest, fair, local, knowledge plumber.
