Absolutely the worst rental car experience we've ever had. We booked a rental through Expedia and had the option to pick up at the airport or take a shuttle to an off-site location for about half the price. We thought we were saving money, but it turned into one of the most frustrating experiences of our trip. As soon as we got to the counter at Routes Car Rental, we were told we had to purchase their basic insurance for $30 per day before they would release the vehicle. We explained that we already have full coverage through our personal auto insurance plus rental car coverage through our credit card. We provided everything they asked for, yet they still refused to honor it and would not release the car unless we bought their insurance. The employee blamed Expedia, saying their website isn't transparent and that Florida laws are different from California. Whether that's true or not, none of these requirements were clearly disclosed before we booked. It felt like a classic bait-and-switch--advertise a low price, then require unexpected charges once customers have already taken the shuttle and are standing at the counter. What made it even more concerning was that, while we were leaving, we saw other customers having the same arguments about insurance and unexpected charges. We clearly weren't the only ones caught off guard. We decided to walk away, called an Uber, and rented from another company instead. The second rental company accepted our insurance without any issues, had no hidden fees, and treated us professionally. Absolutely terrible experience with Routte Car Rental. I reserved SIX Jeeps through Expedia with pickup at Orlando International Airport (MCO) and drop-off at Port Canaveral. My reservation clearly showed different pickup and drop-off locations. When I arrived, I was told that I could only return the vehicles to the same location where they were picked up, making my reservation essentially useless. Because of this, I was unable to use the rental as planned and had to make other arrangements at significant inconvenience and expense. To make matters worse, this is not even an on-airport rental location. After arriving at MCO, you have to wait for a shuttle that takes you roughly 30 minutes away from the airport to their facility. Had I known that beforehand, I would have chosen a different company. I was initially told that I would receive a refund, but after Expedia contacted Route Car Rental on my behalf, they refused to honor it. I paid for six vehicles and received no reasonable solution. This was one of the worst rental car experiences I've ever had. Poor communication, misleading booking information, and terrible customer service. Very disappointed with this experience. We prepaid for our rental through Priceline and waited in line for about 40 minutes, only to be told that we could not rent a car because we were not flying out. Nowhere during the booking process or disclosures was it clearly stated that a flight itinerary was required. At 2 AM, with four kids, we were left scrambling to find another rental car after already paying for our reservation. Also, this company charges tolls and toll administration fees, even though I never drove their vehicles onto any toll roads!! I even went back to the location where they assured me it was a toll road, but it wasn't and absolutely no toll road signs were posted in any directions of that highway. I honestly had the most awful experience of my entire life. I planned a vacation for my family (first time leaving our state) When we arrived to Orlando went to rental car area and they said it was off site- waited 30 minutes for their shuttle to drive another 20 minutes to the rental spot for the employees to be so rude! I could not believe it! After arriving at the airport, I called the number provided for shuttle arrangements, however, the number was not a valid number- it rang and then hung up saying not a good number. I had to get a taxi to the office. Now, I had to get a hotel closer to the airport the day before to avoid any "unavailability" of a shuttle. Save yourself the trouble, don't rent from them. Not only were we picked up and the driver was blasting the music at 1 AM in the morning like we were headed to a frat party... then Even after emailing that our flight was an 1.5 hr. late they proceeded to tell me they only hold the car for one hour and then charge you the full price regular rate despite your reservation. This was one of the worst rental car experiences I've had. We waited over two hours just to get picked up and receive our vehicle. During that time, we attempted to contact support and were told we would be transferred to a human agent, but no one ever followed up. We reserved a midsize SUV (Nissan Rogue or similar) and were given a Hyundai Kona instead. These are not the same class of vehicle. The Kona is a subcompact SUV with significantly less passenger and cargo space. As a family of five traveling with luggage, the vehicle was not reasonably suitable for our needs. When we raised concerns at the counter, nothing was done to address the issue. We were also required to purchase additional insurance related to "loss of use," which was not clearly disclosed ahead of time. On top of that, a $2,500 deposit was required. Picked up our jeep on March 16 in Orlando. The following morning pulled into Disney discovered the power window motor was stuck on the driver side front, unsure of what to do and not about to end our route our trip to Disney I called customer service after being on hold for an hour I hung up and emailed them asking for instructions. I got a response saying we're sorry to hear you're having difficulty and to give us a call at either of these two phone numbers, I called one and it just rang. I called the other, which was the customer service number after I'm being on hold for another 45 to 50 minutes. I hung up emailed back and I can't seem to reach you. Yoooo so much hate for Routes! Google is more favorable. At any rate, I had a tremendous experience. Pre-arrival they communicated well with multiple emails about what to do in the airport, and where to go. I did exactly as they said and was picked up within 5 minutes of standing by the shuttle pick up area. 10 minutes later I was in line at their hub. 3 workers were checking people in. That went fairly quickly. 15 minute in line and I was signing papers. I had my insurance info prepared, per their instructions. No added fees needed. A short jaunt out the door and my 2023 Jeep Rubicon soft top was waiting. It was clean and full of gas. Off I went. The return was equally smooth. Showed up at 1am to pick up our rental car. Jonathan and the manager on duty attempted to scam us with a bait a switch. Told us that our reservation for one week at $125 required a $49/day insurance and that they dont allow policies with ACV for collision (99% of auto policies in america are ACV unless you drive a Rolls Royce or Ferrari). When we confronted them about this and that their policies on the confirmation have no mention of this they cancelled our reservation and attempted to not provide a shuttle back to the airport until we told them we would call the police. read more

I rented a vehicle from this Orlando location from April 19-23 through Expedia. My friends and I were initially skeptical because the booking price was very low, around $130 for the rental period, so we called Expedia and had others review the booking before moving forward. We have rented vehicles before at good rates, including a previous rental around $250 for four nights with no unexpected fees besides a refundable deposit, so we understood that good deals can happen. However, once we arrived, the total increased to nearly $650 due to additional charges and fees that were not clearly explained upfront. We were stunned by the difference. We also booked a 2025 Toyota Corolla but were given a 2025 Kia without any clear explanation. The biggest issue now is the $250 deposit. We were told it would be returned within 7-10 days after drop-off. I called May 8 and May 9 and was told to call back because they were waiting on a response from whoever releases deposits. On May 12, I was told the deposit had been released. It is now May 27, over a month after the rental, and I still have not received it. Throughout this entire process, my friends and I have remained professional and respectful. I simply do not appreciate being treated this way as a customer. I have been renting cars for years, and this is by far the worst experience I have ever had with a car rental service. I wish I could give less than 1 star. I booked the rental car and insurance coverage Priceline prior to picking up the car. Once at the location, I was told by their associate that I had to purchase liability and road side assistance coverage. I asked multiple times why I had to have those items and each time I was told it was required and I should look in the additional information section. Well I did and it stated that both of those coverages were optional. I reached out to the customer service and the only response I got is that I agreed to the coverage. They know people are traveling and don't have time to make all these last minute changes to get a rental car, so they push these up charges because I'm sure they get some type of commission. Don't ever rent from there. Also within an hour of driving the car the check engine light came on. Which I also reported to them. Y'all just don't. Don't start your vacation dealing with this company. Seriously please do not. From the very moment you stand in line waiting on the shuttle to their office, the whole process and experience is a fiasco. Full lines not enough shuttles... the whole process took an hr and half, no lie. Once you get to their office they do not accept your car insurance which is full coverage on a Jaguar... with State Farm. Im not talking about one of those local little whole in the wall cheap car insurance. Anyway, so you end up having to pay $350 more than expected. On top of that the clerk has the worst attitude, well yeah you work for a company stealing peoples money and expect customers to be in their best mood...?? To make matters worse we had two separate reservations, one under my husband's name and one under my father's name... my husband did not have any trouble with a different clerk and did not have to pay any extra than what the reservation was made for. Mind you, he has the same type of insurance through the same company (family plan) and he didnt have to show a "declaration page" just his regular insurance card. When I asked about the discrepancy the clerk smirk and said well do you want me to see what the other clerk did wrong and charge you? I told him it is not about that... it's about fair pricing and treatment for ALL customers not just a few lucky ones. He couldn't argue that, but proceeded to tell me that I can make a complaint but it didn't matter bc they don't do refunds... so basically we were screwed. Please take in consideration all the negative reviews... do yourself a favor and choose a different rental company. Quite a few reasons to avoid this rental company at all costs.. *No one answers the customer service or shuttle pick up number which is also the same number posted at every pick up terminal. 2 years in a row now. Last year, there were 6 families waiting with us..and this year 1 other couple waiting to be picked up....so their "popularity" is spreading as their reviews are 1 star on many of the sites...we were fools not to check this year before booking or we would have booked with any other of the rental companies which there are PLENTY to choose from. *Although ezpass is part of the same sunpass network and you pay the toll. Because "they" also enroll into pay by plate in case someone doesnt pay a toll or to get a notification when their vehicle travels through a toll. Even though your transponder pays the toll. They will charge you $20 to send you a report to show where your passed a toll..not that you didnt pay it..but just to show you went through a road that had a toll. And this fee is for each time you go through a toll again even though you paid it...you pay the fee because you didnt use their 18$ (I believe) per day Sunpass which made no sense for us we there is only 1 toll too our destination and 1 toll back to them to drop off the vehicle. Why pay 18$ a day for 10 days? for 2 tolls? when again we paid the toll with an approved transponder that we've used state to state vehicle to vehicle since cashless tolls started over 13 years.... * Last year someone infront of us ripped them one because they forced placed insurance on their rental and the person had a 3 week rental and when they returned the vehicle they told the renter they violated their terms by driving uninsured so the renter showed them their full insurance declarations page and etc again..which was with their rental contract and the agent went and got the manager and no apology or anything told him to okay we will refund you with a sour face and that they will get a refund in 2 weeks but another 7 days on top of the 2 weeks for their bank to refund them...they embarassed this guy and his family wasted their time and made them late to their flight because they kept telling him to call Route Corporate(Canadian) and deal with it with them...but the guy at the end was right... * Last year the jeep we rented didnt start in the morning so we called and stood on hold but while on hold our resorts security came and gave us a jumpstart. When they finally answered all they could do is give me a checklist of what I could have done to kill their car...which none applied as Ive been around all kinds of vehicles all my life...so they said I had to drive it back to their rental center with the same amount of fuel which was no biggy because we went from them to the resort and thats when it died overnight. And pay another toll and take time away from my vaca and business. Took it their they checked to see if I left or did anything wrong. They couldnt find anything. Low and behold this year they gave us the same "dead" jeep and its working fine...same dents and scratches helped us identify it.... * Customer service is not something to expect from this place you will always have some kind of issue. I rented a jeep from 4/5/26-4/9/26 in Orlando. It was great except for one part. I was lied to by the person at the counter that I needed to pre-purchase fast track for each day I had the rental. It turns out I did not need to use it to travel to Daytona and back which was the opposite of what he told me. He also told me that if I didn't get it, I would be fined double what Routes pre-pay was charging for going on a toll road. Not being from the area, I believed him. I found out that I didn't need to go through any toll roads and that I could've just paid for each toll if I went on one as it would be mailed to me as a bill. Having dishonest employees or practices targeting people who don't know any better is bad business practice and needs to be addressed. I attempted to address the lies I was told by the person at the counter with the company and was told by email I agreed to the fast pass by signing for it. They would not reimburse me at all, not even for the unused days. Routes car rental backs the dishonestly of their employees. When we arrived at Routes Car Rental in Sanford, there was no staff present and no one answering the phone. My husband had to go search for someone just to get help. When we finally did, the employee was rude and told us we couldn't leave the state, were limited to 50 miles per day, and needed a $2,000 deposit. None of this matched what we booked online. We were essentially stuck and unable to continue with our trip. We paid in full up front and still cannot get a refund from either Expedia or Routes. I picked the car up with 1/4 tank of gas and had a signed contract clearly stating that. I have full coverage insurance with geico and have high limits which follow me into any rental vehicle, however routes said they would not accept my insurance because I do not have a "rental endorsement" which I have never heard of and have never been required to have it when renting with other agencies. I called my insurance agent on the spot and asked about it and he has never heard of this endorsement and it's just a tactic to force you to buy their coverage. I then told them I would rather just cancel the entire reservation due to their hidden policies and deceitful tactics and they would charge me a $250 cancellation fee!! This company runs off hidden fees that they don't disclose up front, then when you're there and learn about these bogus charges and refuse to pay it, they'll charge you a $250 cancellation fee for not letting them screw you over. And Priceline TRIED to tell me no refund or cancellation. Next Routes LIED about toll fees. They charge $14.95 a day for a toll pass. Said you get charged $25 by the city if you go through a toll without a pass. NOPE! Toll fee is $1 if you don't have a pass. I drove through 4 tolls in 4 days.
