As soon as we got to the counter at Routes Car Rental, we were told we had to purchase their basic insurance for $30 per day before they would release the vehicle. We explained that we already have full coverage through our personal auto insurance plus rental car coverage through our credit card. We provided everything they asked for, yet they still refused to honor it and would not release the car unless we bought their insurance. The employee blamed Expedia, saying their website isn't transparent and that Florida laws are different from California. Whether that's true or not, none of these requirements were clearly disclosed before we booked. It felt like a classic bait-and-switch--advertise a low price, then require unexpected charges once customers have already taken the shuttle and are standing at the counter. What made it even more concerning was that, while we were leaving, we saw other customers having the same arguments about insurance and unexpected charges. We clearly weren't the only ones caught off guard. We decided to walk away, called an Uber, and rented from another company instead. However, it was not awesome to be stranded in Orlando for six hours when every other car rental was sold out. For something that can be so impactful to families, a company that cares about its customers could send a text or email warning you that they're giving your car rental away. Another way to show you care about customers is to state very clearly -- you have twenty nine minutes to pick up a car rental from Alamo, or they will give your car away. So, to be clear to everyone reading this: You have twenty-nine minutes to pick up a car rental from Alamo. They will not call you or warn you. You will not know that your car has been given away. At pickup, though, the staff informed me that their location requires $300,000-$350,000 in property damage coverage. This is significantly higher than what most standard auto policies include (usually around $50,000-$100,000). Because of this requirement, I was forced to purchase additional insurance. As a result, the total cost for the 3-day rental increased to $380.36--nearly double the original quoted price. On top of that, my credit card was charged $388.09, plus an additional $14.51 for toll fees that I was initially told were already included. I'm sharing this experience so that others are aware and don't get caught off guard like I did. Based on my experience, the pricing was misleading, and the situation felt deceptive/scammed. After weeks of trying to get my deposit back, I received an email from Sonic Car Rental on May 24 stating that my security deposit was "scheduled to be released on June 4" and that no further action was required on my part. It is now June 22, and I still have not received my $1,000. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Sonic represented that the deposit would be released, yet the BBB closed the complaint as unresolved before there was any way to verify whether the promised refund would actually occur. The refund never arrived. To date: * No damage claim has been provided. * No repair invoice has been provided. * No explanation has been provided for withholding the deposit. * Multiple attempts to contact the company have gone unanswered. * The promised refund date has come and gone. What is most frustrating is that the company acknowledged the deposit should be released and even provided a specific date. That date passed more than two weeks ago, and I am still waiting for my money. Consumers should carefully document every communication, keep copies of their rental agreement, monitor their credit card statements, and be prepared to dispute charges if necessary. I was on my way to catch a flight and had no time to go to the rental car desk and find a manager.
