This place is a total joke, for starters we were picked up at the airport by a really old van that was crashed and with tools inside. Secondly we waited in line for 2 hours and when asked if it could be any faster the staff was very rude and with attitude. All that to then hear that they didn't have the car we had booked, we rented 2 jeeps and ended up with a minivan and a Hyundai Tucson but it didn't end there we had to pay $300 in fees and prepaid tolls that we will not use, only then to be sent outside in the heat to wait another hour in line for our vehicles. I think I start most of my 1 star reviews (not too many of them total, either) stating I really don't like leaving 1 star reviews. I really think this place ranks as top 3 for all time worst customer service experiences I've ever had. First, the shuttle that is supposed to be around every 15 minutes took about 45 minutes to get to the airport. When you arrive they have chairs in front of the main door, blocking your entrance, making it exceptionally confusing where you are supposed to go to enter. We finally opened the door to be greeted with them shouting at us that only one of us may enter and we had to move the chairs to get in. The reservation was in my wife's name so she went in. It took approx 30 minutes for them to work out the paperwork and get us going onto the next phase ---- waiting ----- waiting ----- waiting ----- waiting ----- waiting ......... and you guessed it, waiting for them to bring us our car and inspect it, prior to us being able to leave. They make you wait outside, in the sun, as it beats down on you. As they literally have no motivation to take care of customers. If they have people come up to them they know, they stop 'working' and chat with them. There is no motivation to try and serve customers. The line of people waiting for cars grew longer and longer and longer as they literally did nothing to try and take care of us. Once our car finally got to the check out station they proceeded to document every square inch of the vehicle prior to letting us leave - we took the opportunity to do the same, as we had no idea what we were in store for when we returned. The only reason they get 1 star - Yelp doesn't allow less and the one redeeming thing for them, the return went relatively smooth. Again, we had to wait, but nowhere even close to as long as when we attempting to get the rental. In the future it's safe to say I would choose walking over renting from this location again. read more

Would give 0 stars if I could. This company has no respect for its customers. They gave us a dirty car with a key fob that didn't work as well as a transmission issue that would cause it to jolt between gears. On top of that we found our car was covered in roaches of all sizes. When we called to return it early they kept hanging up on us and told us to drive the car back. One worker working the desk and had to sit with a toddler til 3 am (2-1/2 hours ) to get a rental. We ended up getting a Jeep truck which wasn't what we had reserved. None of the truck doors locked which was a huge problem. Awful awful! read more

We had a terrible experience with Routes car rental at SJU, and would not recommend this business to anyone, ever. Be aware of Priceline third parties! They catch you when you do a search for "Budget rent a car at the airport", and while you may think you are making a reservation with a well-known company, you instead find yourself involved with "Budget airport rental cars" powered by Priceline. This is how we ended up in a disappointing odyssey with Routes car rental in San Juan. My partner and I flew to San Juan (SJU), having reserved a car online a day before. When we arrived at the off-site rental office we found chaos - a long line of people filling the waiting room, waiting to check in. For those lucky enough to have checked in, there was a similarly long line outside, where people waited for hours in the hot summer sun for their cars to be delivered to them. We waited for a couple hours in the check-in line with no significant progress toward the check-in desk. Others near us in line reported waiting 4 or more hours. Throughout all of this there was no communication at all from any Routes employee to those of us waiting, letting us know what our options were. After more than 2 hours in the increasingly warm waiting room with no progress toward check-in, we decided to bail out and take an Uber to our hotel in San Juan, and I'm glad we did. The next day we rented a car from a (different) well-known rental company and that went very smoothly. To complement the bad experience, Routes has held for several days 5X the amount that was due at pick-up, and now we are hoping to get our money back from Priceline for the "Collision Damage Protection" that never was applied to a rental car with them. We give Priceline and Routes Rental zero stars, and urge people not to waste time and money on those businesses, which promise low rental prices and good service, but deliver neither. read more

Routes is a scam company! they will give your information to other companies so do not be surprised if you find out random outrageous charges on your credit card from companies you have never heard of! On October 26, 2023, I reserved a car rental through Priceline. I booked a car with Route Car Rental for 4 days for a total amount of $210. The reservation was non-refundable and required full payment of $210 in advance. Once I paid the amount with my American Express card, I received a confirmation email from Priceline explaining this is a car rental with "unlimited mileage" and that the car rental agency is "Route" and the car needs to be picked up at 15850 John F Kennedy Blvd, Houston, TX 333142. On October 27, 2023, I went to the address listed on my reservation. There was no live agent present but there was a call button to speak to an agent via video call. The agent confirmed my reservation and already had my information on file. The agent also asked me to place my credit card inside their terminal for a security deposit and confirmed the date and location to return the vehicle. I returned the vehicle on the designated time and date on October 31, 2023 at the same location of the pick up. I noticed there is an additional charge of $2500 that has been placed on my American Express credit card by ANOTHER company, named "Rent A Car 4 Less" for the same reservation. I never made a reservation with this company and have never done business with this company in the past. I called this "Rent a Car 4 Less" and asked why they have charged my credit card. They mentioned that they have rented me the car on October 27, 2023 and while they honor my reservation number with "Route" [ the original company that I had reservation], they will NOT honor the original terms and conditions I had with Route! During the pick up of the vehicle, it was never communicated that they are a different company than Route and that they have different terms and conditions. At the time of pick up, I was told to place my credit card in terminal for "Route" to place a security deposit. I never authorized "Rent a Car 4 Less" to make any transactions on my card. The terms and conditions of my rental agreement with Route was 19.99 USD/day for traveling out of state. The new company "Rent a Car 4 less" is NOT honoring the agreement and is charging me $2500 instead. There was not any communication from Route indicating that my reservation is being handled by a different company with different sets of terms and conditions. It is an unlawful deceptive sale practice and violation of consumer law. I purchased a 4-day car rental via Route with explicit terms and conditions that was communicated via email and in writing. I went to the pick up address that was listed in their confirmation email. Changing the carrier of the reservation without notice and changing the terms and conditions of rental agreement without notice on a non-refundable reservation is a violation of my consumer right. read more

The reservation was made and paid through Priceline. Pick up was friendly and comfortable. Upon arrival it was busy and you reasonably wait. They offer you the Auto express pass, which I highly recommend for there are no other alternatives when traveling. You cannot pay with cash when traveling through tolls, and you cannot link a auto express pass that you can purchase at a gas station to a car rental. After checking in they asked for a $250.00 hold for the rental incase of an accident. It didn't matter that I had already purchased the insurance through Price Line. They tried to talk me into buying more insurance. It was a bit awkward for me to respond in silence after showing them the proof that I had already purchased insurance. So now we had to add this $250.00 hold so my wife offered to put it on her card to help us out. This will later turn into an unexpected fee. The problem begins when your getting your car. Prepare to wait. You will see numerous employees standing around talking to each other as you bake in the tropical heat, waiting. There was one employee, it was his first day, he was hustling out the cars. You could tell it was his first day, everyone else literally gave you the side eye and found a place to chat with another employee as you waited. I was in shock. So many people waiting and it was obvious they were just milking the clock. After receiving the car, a day later i had to return for the horn did not work. No problem, they swapped it out. When returning the car I was in and out, a few days later after we returned from the trip to PR we get the notification of charges through our Discover App. We received a $187.00 fee. It was broken down into numerous charges, pollution charges, taxes, remember my wife putting down her credit card to cover that $250.00 to cover incase of an accident? Now she was added as a driver so they charged us and extra $35.00. All she did was cover the hold, now she conveniently was charged $35.00. When we returned the car the first time for the horn issue we did decide to do some more traveling and opted for the auto express, which should had been a total of $80.00, that was supposed to be taken out of the $250.00 hold, we should had received a credit of around $170.00...instead we were charged an extra $187.00. We contacted the car rental, they put you hold, try and explain everything, transfer you and conveniently the phone call drops. Priceline attempted to recover any charges that could had been charged incorrectly, but after their investigation, there was nothing they could do. In the past I've dealt with Hertz and Avis directly, the pay was more up front, but there were no hidden charges. I walked in, picked the car of my choice and was out. Only waiting I have had in the past was inside in a comfortable atmosphere. Moving forward, I don't recommend Routes or its sister company next door. There's two sayings that this reminded me of, the fact that the car was being offered at $6.00 a day should had been the first red flag. Those sayings are, "there's a sucker born everyday" and "what's cheap, ends up becoming expensive" I deserve what I got for I failed to see the red flag of the price of the rental, I should had looked them up here first, and noticed all of the horrible reviews. This was Jan 28-Feb 3. They called me on Feb 4 that they would be releasing my deposit. It is now May 7th and still no deposit. We arrived on Friday afternoon June 7th to get a car rental that was paid and reserved through Priceline. We arrived at the location by shuttle at 2:15 Pm. We opened the glass doors to our surprise the place was full of families waiting for cars. There was about 4 customer Service reps behind the counter but only 3 helping the customers. We waited on the line, no one ever told us to sign in. After waiting for more than 20 mins. My husband walked up and was informed that you must sign in. After they take your name and reservation number you still have to wait. The reps. were so slow. We were told they didn't have enough cars & we had to wait cause cars were coming back. While we waited more customers were coming in for their reservations and the lobby was filling up again. We waited 2 hours. A gentleman that came after us was furious as well cause his car wasn't ready although reserved. The female manager came out and she had nothing good to say to calm the customer. We went up to the counter again to find out what was going on. They told us to wait again. Now they had less customer service reps at the counter. Our name was finally called when we got to the counter they tried to sell me insurance but I already had. The rep. Luis was very nice but he told me I had to rent the AutoExpresso pass if I was going to take the highway. The cost was 396.00 which since the tolls aren't cash anymore we needed to purchase. We had no other choice but to rent the AutoExpresso pass. He stated when we return the car we would get a refund of 250.00. As I stated we had no other choice. I'm hoping I do not have the same wait or any problems when I return the car. Honestly they need to retrain their associates. Customers shouldn't have to wait that long for a car which was reserved and paid for. Also as you are coming into the establishment they should have a representative greeting the customer at the door and taking their names and placing on the sign in sheet. After we were given our contract we still had to wait outside for them to bring our car up. That took another 20 minutes. Oh and to make matters worse we were given a car with a 1/4 of a tank of gas. The company also doesn't tell you about all the hidden fees that they suddenly charge you. I had to pay $70 over the promised price from Priceline (where I booked it). Oh, just when you think it can't get any worse, the guys who collect the cars for you literally look like they have no idea as to what they're doing. A Scam! They advertise a super cheap rate, nonrefundable. Then they stall everyone at the airport; We watched three of every other shuttle go by before on Allied (shared by Routes and other companies) came to pick up what was about 17 people. The driver then hems and haws refusing to take some people because they had not called the number ( it takes several tries to even get an answer). I had called the number so I did get to go in the first van, but by that time the I had wasted a good 1/2 hour. By the time we got to the office and I waited in line I had wasted at least another 20 minutes. The twit at the desk told me the company policy was to cancel after 1 hour. I was 10 minutes late. He insisted I could not have been waiting that long, essentially calling me a liar, even though I was in an office with other people who had the same experience. The shuttle description wasn't correct so after waiting almost an hour for the shuttle, we called the ticket counter and they told us to continue looking for a white van with red writing that said Routes on the side, but the shuttle never arrived therefore we paid for a taxi to the ticket counter, and then waited over an hour to get the vehicle because there was one guy working behind the ticket counter and about 20 others wandering around outside back and fourth from the rental car place next door. The guy at the ticket counter didn't care the shuttle didn't arrive, I couldn't use my auto insurance because my vehicle is more than 5 years old which is a silly policy to scam people into needing the added insurance, he charged me for things he didn't notify me he was charging me for such as roadside assistance and wheel/tire damage protection, the tires were way under inflated when I got the vehicle which was showing caution lights on the dash, and I couldn't obtain a receipt when I returned the vehicle to dispute the charges before they were billed because I was told I would need to wait in the ticket counter line, but I couldn't wait there for two hours because I would miss my flight. I will never rent from Routes again, and I strongly discourage others from using Routes rental cars. Oh and lastly, the main customer service number for Routes is a third party department based out of the Dominican Republic, so they were also not helpful when I called to express my concerns about the negative experience. And one more lastly, they will charge you for use of the toll pass and if you opt out of using the toll pass, there's about a $20 charge per toll you pass. While we did not have as bad an experience as others, we were very disappointed by the rental. Pros: car worked great, new enough Cons: 1) no customer service, we were hung up 16 (!!!) times before I could speak to a representative to extend the rental because of a flight cancellation, 2) cleaning charges: we did shake the mats before returning the car since we had been warned about this unreasonable surcharge and Routes still wanted to charge me for cleaning because of a dusty footprint. The guys also had an attitude and mentioned "what is this?" pointing to the faint outline of a shoe sole on the floor mat. I did tell him that we did sit in the car and we did rent it to use it, not to be parked in a garage. Lol, so much uncalled for attitude. 3) the cost of the toll pass. We paid $10 one-time charge and then $10/day. It seems excessive and wish we had declined it, in spite of the insistence of the person at the desk that we could not do without it. Quick and to the point: -took a while. -they do over look you if you look too touristy. I had to interject to get our car because they kept over looking my boyfriend. (3/4) -check engine light was on. -"slip indicator" light kept coming on and buzzing. That's for the cars stabilization. It also indicates low brake fluid. Got a car rental through booking.com with this company and got it for a good price which was the reason why I got it. The first girl that assisted me was rude and dismissive when I asked questions as if I was bothering her. FIRST CAR we RETURNED the second day as it was INFESTED WITH ROACHES. The staff was cool and SWAPPED the car out for another car same model but this SECOND CAR WAS ALSO INFESTED WITH ROACHES. We told the guy who was helping me and then he started getting annoyed and stated thats out of the companies control because these are rental cars and all kinds of people use them which is why they all have roaches. This is weird because I've used many rental cars before and none of them had roaches maybe because they were from more reputable companies. This is the first time I have seen roaches in rental vehicles. He then swapped the car once again for a THIRD TIME. He told us that this car was fumigated 4 hours prior which let me know that THEY'RE AWARE THAT THEYRE INFESTED BUT DONT DISCLOSE ANY OF THAT TO CUSTOMERS AND WONT GIVE YOU YOUR MONEY BACK EVEN THOUGH IT'S ROACHES IN THE VEHICLES.
