Very well maintained grounds. Tucked away on busy Dale Ave. Serene and nice to walk around. They used to have independent living but they are phasing that out. Assisted living and memory care. Staff members are friendly, helpful, even when It is very hard for them working with older, usually stubborn or cranky residents. They try their best to care for the elderly. They are usually good at letting you know when something happens to your family member. There's even a chapel on the grounds. Cost of living here increased a bit but it's still more affordable than some of the other comparable communities. read more

Just adding on to my earlier review My mom has lived in independent living at Rowntree Gardens for over seven years. This review is based on the way they handled last week's chemical leak evacuation. They acted quickly and kept families informed, including calling me directly so I could bring my mom home during the evacuation. For residents without nearby support, staff worked hard to arrange safe temporary placements in other senior communities or hospitals as needed. Communication stayed clear throughout, with regular updates by email and social media. When residents returned, they were welcomed back with staff cheering, signs, and a real "welcome home" feeling. Overall, it really showed how organized, caring, and responsive the staff are, even during a stressful situation. My family member is in the temporary rehab portion of the skilled nursing facility and the entire experience has been very good. The facility is clean, the staff are skilled and friendly, there are plenty of activities for people to keep busy and the food is good. The grounds are beautiful and my family member enjoys being taken out in the gardens when we visit. If I ever know anyone who is looking for skilled nursing, assisted living or senior living I will highly recommend Rowntree. read more

This facility has been fabulous. We moved my Mom Mary Lou in during December 2024 after just a horrendous experience at another assisted living facility. What a world of difference at Rown Tree. I have gone from having to have almost daily interactions with the prior home to fix some failure on their part to total peace of mind here. Every need is attended to and attended to timely. My family member is staying here & continues to have clothing & personal items stolen. Complaining has not stopped it. Writing their name in the clothing or on items doesn't stop it. We believe it is the staff because it's unlikely the other 70, 80, & 90 year olds are taking them but we don't know for sure. I believe this was the largest campus of all the facilities we visited. It was also the most inconvenient location to access. This overall facility offers much to be enjoyed and shared, especially if you are in the assisted living area. The memory-care patrons have access only if accompanied by a responsible adult. The Memory-care unit consisted of rooms suitable for two patrons. They would share a bathroom. This area was located away from the assisted living area. In their room, patrons are separated by a partition, not a wall. There is a multi-purpose room, which has a big screen television. Classes or other activities could have taken place here but were not in use during our visit. Not a single person was in this room. The dining area reminded me of an Aunts kitchen. Staff observes then patron, then they ASSIGN seating. I did not care for this method. While this facility passed our inspection and review, I must either accept their seating method or move on. read more

I have visited the place for the first time today and I really love it! So sparkling clean and the staff on duty are super nice! I was inquiring about the pricing plans and the square footage of units! I was taken on a tour of the facility and it was just so extraordinarily beautiful! I was envisioning of how I would decorate my front door since I do wreath designing! And not only that, but do little interior decorations itself as I enjoy doing decorations! I love the layout of the first floor studio unit! I can only hope I'm able to move into an independent living unit! read more

I wanted to leave a review because I see that there are not many on here. My dad and I found Rowntree Gardens through Jerry, a Placement Specialist. Basically, they work like a Real Estate Agent who you tell what you are looking for and they help you find it, setting up tours, etc. Depending, where you move into some places will give Jerry (Placement Specialist) something like a finders fee/commission. Jerry was great and even toured with us at locations that would not offer him any monetary reward. Rowntree Gardens is the place my father picked for himself and my mother to move into. This was March of last year so they were only 77 & 75 at the time which made them some of the youngest people to live there. Originally, my parents lived in the independent living section and once a 2 room/2 bathroom came available in Assisted we moved them into that building. My parents love it in Rowntree and it was half the price of every other living facility we toured. I live in Long Beach and I like it there too because it is not a far drive and everyone is so friendly. My dad chose Rowntree due to how large the location is (7 acres?) and the fact they had a chapel onsite. My mom and dad often join Bible Study and my mom really enjoys her prayer group. Since my parents have been there my family and I can rest easy knowing that they are safe. Most of Rowntree Gardens employees have been there a long time so they do not have a high turnover rate. My parents primary doctors come onsite for visits. They have physical therapy and speech therapists available onsite as well. I have not had the food myself but my parents are never hungry and don't want me to ever bring them any snacks. Most of the time they really enjoy it as there are many options. My dad continues to run his business and go into work while living in Rowntree. He recently contracted covid so him and my mom are being quarantined. It is so nice knowing they have 24 hour care should they need it. Another reason why we chose Rowntree is because it offers everything from Independent Living to Skilled Nursing. So even if one of them needs to be moved into memory care, or 1 of them needs a feeding tube, Rowntree can accommodate them and my parents can continue to be together. read more

We had a wonderful experience with this facility. Very clean, respectful, and caring. My mother has a ton of dietary restriction which they accommodated while still managing to give her verity. The food is good and the care excellent. Mom thrived there and even made friends. She stayed in the short term care and rehab section after getting out of the hospital. We will be eternally grateful for how respectful the entire staff was to her and to all of us. Even mom will recommend this facility to anyone that is in need. read more

This review is for ELMWOOD Nursing Care. Recently my mother spent about 3 weeks recovering from knee replacement surgery. I don't know all the costs because it was covered by insurance. Staff and doctors were all great and treated my mom with utmost respect. Their visiting hours were flexible so I was able to visit my mom almost anytime my schedule allowed. The facility is very clean and maintained. I know sometimes it can get busy caring for elderly but they were very attentive to what I saw. There were many amenties even for short stay people like my mom. She was able to get communion from local church staff. It's very secure with cameras, gates, and monitored after hours acces, etc.... My mom was very comfortable and I think better off if she had gone straight home. Therapy and doctors were on site and available. She's a picky eater and they always tried to accomadate her preferences and dietary restrictions. read more

Grandmother contracted COVID-19 after being put in this home because a family member knew someone who worked here. The workers don't care about what they do to your family in the off-time. As of this review 2 of the caretakers are confirmed with COVID-19 and 2 of the patients. In addition the director comes around every few days and separates the patients only when he knows that someone is coming to check in on their distancing. He stated numerous times to my grandmother that it's only for a couple of days and then they can go back to normal. Testing wasn't prevalent enough and she wouldn't have even been confirmed if it wasn't for the fact that she's in the hospital now. Find a much better care facility because this one ONLY cares about their bottom line. read more

I found Rowntree after months of searching for a suitable place for my mom (85 years old) closer to my home (Long Beach). I spoke to and toured several different places, both near Alhambra (where she lived at the time) and closer to me. Rowntree was - HANDS DOWN - far superior to all the rest! When you walk onto their campus, you can feel a difference! You're greeted by a flowing fountain surrounded by lush plants as you enter the front courtyard, and the Chapel is right there, too. My mom has now lived at Rowntree for 10 months, and I can truly say we have no complaints. The staff here are SO nice! They always have a sweet word or compliment for my mom, "oh we just love having your mom here, her smile lights up the room!" or some other such thing. The front staff know her by name and will tell me where she is, if she's not in her room. The dining hall is lovely, it is restaurant style: the residents arrive and are seated by a host, they are not "assigned" a seat; they are welcome to sit with friends/other residents etc. In these 10 months, my family and I have joined my mom for lunch on several occasions. The food is DELICIOUS! I've never had a meal I didn't like, and the residents will sometimes joke that they've gained X pines since moving in because they're so well fed! They offer exercise daily, Bingo several times a week, prayer groups, Bible studies, and even concerts for the residents! We've attended a harpist's concert (gorgeous music!) and a summertime concert given by an orchestra Huntington Beach that was spectacular, all al fresco, too! The rooms may not be the most modern or contemporary, but they are always clean (they have cleaning service included weekly!) and my mom is always well attended to. There are outings, movie nights, game nights, courtyard socials - the weekly activities calendar is full, there's always something to do, if the resident chooses to participate. They even have a beauty shop onsite, my mom gets her hair set weekly! Oh, and PT and OT services onsite, too. Even primary care physicians that come to do visits right there in the clinic! I cannot say enough good things about Rowntree gardens! I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a place where you know your loved one will be SEEN, cared for, and loved. read more

My mom just left after 10 days in the skilled nursing here. This is an amazing skilled nursing and I would highly recommend it. I moved my 90-year-old dad to Rowntree Gardens over two years ago from another facility where he was not getting great care. From my perspective as a doctor of psychology and a son of an elderly parent, moving a parent and entrusting others to assist with their care is never an easy decision. I have visited him frequently and call him often and can tell you that, beyond a doubt, this is the best staff and location we have seen. Review is strictly for the Easter egg hunt here Let me tell ya, this is no ordinary Easter egg hunt. There's enough kids here that can easily fill 10 log rides at any amusement park. I was a noob and I got here on time at 8:45am. The event was from 8:45 to 11:00am. I had already missed most of the magic show from Johnny Ace Palmer. Kids and elderly patients were all outside, it was definitely a family gathering and a way to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. But wait, there's more. Upon entry and if you got tickets in advance, you were able to get goody bags for your kids, a lunch tickets for the whole family (which I got hot dogs, chips, sodas, cupcakes, cookies, juice for one person) some raffle tickets, a chance to see a Easter bunny in costume, play games to win prizes, coloring sheets, dye egg, chance to win easter baskets, and a whole lot of "I have no idea where is what" So in the big courtyard, I was looking around. There were a lot going on. A whole lot. There was a lot of waiting, a whole lot. There was only 2 hours of fun and games. Oh wait, since there was waiting, let's make that 90 minutes of fun and games and food which was impossible to do in the given amount of time. I was lucky to have my brother in law give me tickets to this event since he works here. Parking is limited inside the complex, but I was lucky to park on one of those spaces by the wall. This event would be a 5 star event if there was less waiting and maybe have a schedule of events on what is going to be done in the next 2 hours. Nevertheless, I had a fun time here and the volunteers from the local high schools were great as well. They had pretty much given all the prizes out even if you didn't play the games towards the end. So come early, have a plan, maybe bring an extra hand or two to watch kids in order to do all the activities given. read more

I was thrilled my 89 year old mother agreed to come here. I thought it was a great place, friendly staff, nice rooms and pretty landscaping. It was a lot of work moving her into assisted living, only a respite stay, but we were so relieved. She is frail and needs more help than we can give her at home The day after I moved her in and set up her room all pretty, we were told that she couldn't stay because her care was not at the level of assisted living She was evaluated before and passed but I guess once she got there, they realized that she needed more care so I have to bring her home again it's been so confusing and we are so disappointed I don't know much about nursing homes but I am learning, it is a business...a kind of hospitality business and there are liabilities, which I understand what I don't quite understand, is why put my mother or anyone through this? its hard enough for the elderly to check into a nursing home then this kind of runaround... doesn't seem very compassionate things need to change for old people..that's for sure read more

My mom previously lived here. They even used her in their ads, without compensation. It used to be called Quaker Gardens, but they changed the name and fancied it up so they could charge more. It's a nice place as long as you are completely independent. If you need any care whatsoever, the nursing care is lacking and the medical director is unprofessional. He has a pompous attitude and complete lack of responsibility when things go wrong. ......and they did go wrong. Needless to say, we moved her. I might add, that when she moved in, she paid for the upgrades to her apartment, which is how they saved money, and forced the costs onto the residents. I always felt the upgrades should have been covered by Rowntree, not by residents that are on fixed incomes. read more

After my wife has been here for over a month I found my initial praise review has been diminished. Their primary goal is keeping the patients comfortable but not aggressive medical intervention My wife is no where ready to be discharged. While the staff is helpful , the attending physician are non responsive in continuous treatment. Rarely will Dr Tran follow up or visit the patients. He is paid to attend once per Month. The choice I Of physician is not of a priority basis. The staff is very slow in reacting to changing medical needs. ; and will not intervene with the doctor. When requesting changes in medicine or treatment, they are slow to react. Essentially you HAVE to be a patient advocate or your family member falls into limbo. While they are a caring center, they lack the intensity of providing continuous MEDICAL care. Hopefully this updated review will "wake the sleeping dogs" and my wife will get the needed medical care so that she can return home Will post follow up as developments occur. read more

Having visited numerous senior living organizations throughout the years, Rowntree is the best of the best! They standout for their compassion, friendliness and warmth. As strange as it sounds, you can "feel it" when you walk onto the property. Both residents and staff greet you with a smile, are eager to help lend a hand and make you feel welcome in their home. This skilled nursing facility did a miraculous job in helping my dad in recovering from a hip fracture due to a fall as a result of his Parkinson Disease. The facility was spacious, very peaceful, and equipped with everything to make it homey. The staffs were attentive and accommodating to his every need. His ability to walk and perform daily functions afterward was even better than before he had the fall due to the excellent in house physical therapy regimen. The obvious improvement in his motor activities was literally a miracle! Furthermore, the visit hours were fantastic because there were no restrictions. It is open 24/7. I could not thank them enough for making my dad's transition from the hospital back to home more easily as it was. read more

My Mom has severe Dementia, they touted their 'memory care' facility to be 'excellent'. From the get go the staff didn't know how to handle a 'belligerent', difficult patient. They forced her to do things that she didn't understand because of severe memory loss. The staff had no idea how to handle her. They were more interested in hanging around the nurse station and talking. She fell and severely sprained her ankle so they put her in the 'skilled' nursing facility, they were even worse. she never fully recovered from the ankle sprain, when family visited they wanted us to deal with her. They called me constantly complaining of her behavior. Their solution was to drug her so heavily that she was a zombie. Then when had had enough, they admitted they didn't know how to handle her and told us we had to move her somewhere else! If you simply need someone to 'babysit' an elderly relative QC may be OK, but, plan of having to move your relative as soon as they get a little difficult. Plus, this facility is extremely expensive!!! Don't let their fancy surroundings fool you. read more

My grandma was placed here because the hospital that she had her hip replacement at recommended it. All was good until one day she had a seizure and they thought she was having an allergic reaction to medication, how they could confuse the two is beyond me. It took them 8 hours to figure it out and get her to the hospital on top of that they overdosed her on Benadryl. Don't send your loved ones here! read more

My mother had stayed here after a knee replacement a couple months ago. She was just in a car accident and needed to come back because her knee was injured in accident. They had originally said yes to UC Irvine Medical Center to go ahead and send my mom and she would have a room in 6B. Then, last minute, Yolie called the hospital to say that they cannot except my mom back because they had trouble discharging her when she left last time. What the heck does that mean???? Is the real reason because you wanted to release my mom after a couple of days and I said that I would call the insurance so you let her stay a couple more days????? I will notify insurance about your way of dealing with patients. read more

My 87-year-old dad was admitted here for rehab following neurosurgery at UCIMC. He came with a catheter in place due to problems urinating. The rehab staff - OT and PT - were top-notch. They had him walking along with a walker and regaining a lot of his mobility. He was in Quaker Gardens for almost 5 weeks. He had the catheter in place the entire time. While there he had a couple of low-grade fevers and the staff treated him with Tylenol. About a week before his discharge, the head nurse talked to us about his medications, labwork, and home care. He came home for one night and then had an appointment with his urologist. At the office he suffered a seizure and was rushed to the E.R. He was in septic shock due to a severe infection. One kidney was almost in shutdown and he had bacteria in his bloodstream. The infectious disease specialist told me that the sepsis was not something that had happened "overnight", but was due to a long-neglected urinary tract infection. My dad also came home with a class 3 bed sore which the nurses treated in the CCU. I am extremely disappointed with the nursing care my dad received at Quaker Gardens. We had no reason to believe that there was anything wrong with him so when he was diagnosed with septic shock just ONE DAY after leaving there, it was a complete and horrible surprise. My dad has been in CCU for 8 days now and is finally recovering enough to the point where we can consider bringing him home sometime in the next week or two. read more

My father has lived at Rowntree for several years now. It has been such a blessing for the whole family. He has privacy and independence in his own studio apartment, and is very happy with the tasty meals (and the fact that he does not have to prepare them!). He has grown to enjoy some of the wide variety social activities and always has something interesting to tell me about things that are happening each week. We checked out a number of alternative assisted living facilities before my father chose Rowntree, and there was no comparison. The pleasure and serenity of the open grounds and gardens impressed us first. After even a few days we began to appreciate the wonderful staff. They really do care about the residents, and go out of their way to make sure they are all doing well. My father has had a few medical emergencies during his residence at Rowntree, and it is very clear that the staff's top priority is the residents' safety and health. My father is very happy at Rowntree, and that makes all of us in the family happy as well. read more

We have a couple friends who are residents at Rowntree Gardens and every time we see them they are out of their rooms, active and happy. I've also noticed that the staff seem to know all of the residents by name and take such care in making sure that they have what they need....even dropping what they are doing to come help when they see a need. My Mom (who has always been fearful of going to any kind of retirement place) went with us to an event at Rowntree and was so impressed by the facility and the caring staff and by how our friends describe their experience that she is now saying she would love to live in a place like this. My mother has been living at Rowntree for over six years. She began her stay in independent living, moved to assisted living for two years, and is now in their memory care center. The administration staff and caregivers are exceptional. Most of the caregivers are very compassionate and well trained. The dining facilities, menu selection and service staff make mealtime a real pleasure. The on-site physical therapy team offers excellent service to keep her as mobile as possible. Rowntree also offers a variety of activities. We enjoy visiting and consider Rowntree a likely home when we can no longer stay in our house. read more

It's hard to place a loved one in a nursing facility. Elmwood, the skilled nursing facility at Rowntree, was just what my mother needed to get her back on her feet (literally) after spine surgery. Her daily rehab got her walking again, and she learned the skills to be able to move into the assisted living building where she has a busy and active life. She gets the support she needs and we know she is safe and happy. I can't say enough about the employees in all areas of the facility. The food and activities are awesome. read more

About 4 years ago my Mom, then age 84, fell and fractured her pelvis and broke her wrist. Surgery fixed the wrist but she would need 3months of rehab to learn to walk again. I personally have no love or trust for any aspect of the medical profession and when it comes to the care of my mom, my expectations are hard to satisfy. I was with my mom several hours every day during her rehab time at Quaker Gardens and watched how the staff interacted with her, delivered her meals, brought her to and from physical therapy, and went out of their way to see that her recovery was successful and that she was happy during her stay. When she was discharged I was given an evaluation form to fill out. I have filled such forms out before and I can generally write an essay on the inexcusable behavior I have observed but this time, I couldn't come up with even a suggestion. My mom was determined to go back to her home and live as she had before and she tried. Too many things had changed. Cooking, grocery shopping, Dr appts, and managing her finances were all too much. It was a constant worry for me because I don't live close enough to help her with all of the day to day things she needed. I suggested that she consider renting an apartment at Quaker Gardens for 60 days to see if she like it. She loved the apartment she choose, she made friends right away, the staff from the skilled nursing centered welcomed her back and life was fun and stress free for her once again. Her trial stay of 60 days has now stretched to 3 1/2 years and she is still happy. I have learned that I can rely on the staff 100% to keep me informed and there have been times when I have been asked to participate in solving problems. She has dementia and has experiences periods of paranoia and behaved aggressively toward other residents. The staff came to me with a plan that included a roundtable discussion with my mom about her behavior and a steps that could be taken to address the issues. Instead of being treated like a disobedient child she was a full participant in the solution process. For me the peace of mind is wonderful. The staff is there to help change the batteries in her hearing aids, reset her watch with the time changes, order refills on her prescriptions, recharge her cell phone, etc, etc. All the tiny things that become wildly frustrating for an elderly person to do for themselves are graciously accommodated. read more

I only came here to visit my boyfriends grandma who was there for rehabilitation from her recent hip surgery. When you pull into the parking lot it seems like a small facility. When we walked in to find out where she was they gave us directions and we walked through the back doors and the place was huge! It is also a residential facility. (This is what we saw before we got to the rehab part) As I am sure as any place it is a little ....depressing. It will never be easy to see the elderly in the state of dementia and in this area it was unavoidable, tears at your heart strings. The room his grandma was in was shared with another lady, but his grandma scored by getting the window side. There were a lot of patients there but all of the staff seemed very friendly. If you go to visit someone they really don't have chairs in the room so you will find yourself standing over them, but one of the orderlies to finally bring us some chairs. As long as it made her day to see her grandson that is all that matters. read more

Rowntree Gardens provided multiple levels of care for my in-laws for almost 8 years. The staff consistently worked to meet their physical and emotional needs. The Life Care program proved invaluable for them. They were able to seamlessly move back and forth from assisted living to skilled nursing, depending on their situation. Our family had numerous birthday, anniversary, Thanksgiving and holiday celebrations at Rowntree. The staff always made great accommodations for us.
