I've been in and out of Rowster's since it opened when I was in high school. The atmosphere of the place has always been really hip and the location is perfect. I love this sit in the front window and do some reading. Very sunny, charming, and clean - not to mention high tech. Also, the swag is on point. Maybe I've been spoiled by Madcap or other cafes/roasters recently, but I think quality of coffee served here is just OK. The coffee beans themselves are decently priced. However, the pour overs I have experienced here are a bit watery and bland...and given the menu prices, it's a little disappointing. They use an automated pour over system to make their drinks (or at least, at the time I visited they did) and this may contribute to a lower pour over quality. If you are looking for a place to do homework that is in a convenient spot, this place is probably for you. It's quiet and bright, and if you order a cortado you will be decently happy with your choice. If you are looking to experience some awesome pour overs, I recommend visiting Madcap instead. read more

Minimalist coffee shop that pours their attention on what their name says: coffee. No syrups. No gimmicks. No half pound of whipped cream on everything. Just good, clean, solid coffee. They roast the beans on site and are experts in crafting a drink. Not to mention the baristas are friendly, talkative, and expertly skilled at their craft. On my most recent stop in, I asked for my favorite, the Milky Way coffee. With sadness, I learned they currently aren't brewing it ( but don't fret- they still sell in the bag to take home). The barista recommended several other coffees that I may like that were slightly similar. I appreciated the recommendation but I took the opportunity to try something totally out of the box.. er..out of the cup.. and went with an Expresso. It was rich and robust, served with soda water. Simply the best iced coffee I have ever experienced. I generally drink my iced coffee with a little cream to cut the bite. This cup of perfection was like sipping silk. There are times in life where you know you are having the best of something. This will be one of those times. The Good - If there is a heaven for coffee, this is it. The people creating the delicious cups of amazing coffee are laid back and casual. There is no shouting, no shoving, just an incredible love of coffee which is evident in every cup. If you have never had soda water with your espresso, begin asking for it. Seriously, if you felt like you have had good coffee, then do yourself a favor and really experience it here. The Bad - It is not a place for those that want to try their first coffee drink... or for those that don't know what they want. There are few menus and nothing listed on the wall. So beware: Rowster is for the coffee connoisseur. Ok, not really but their coffee is smooth and would be approved by coffee connoisseurs all around the world! Unsure of what type of coffee you want? No worries! Just tell your barista/roaster what type of coffee you normally drink and they will whip up something just for you! I love the interior and they have a front and back outside seating area. The service makes you feel like you just walked into a friends place and their coffee makes you stop in your tracks and recognize the fine taste of a wonderful brew. Do I recommend it? Sometimes, the hardest thing a restaurant can have working against it is high expectations. The woman and I are no novices when it comes to advanced coffee, and we both went into Rowsters wanting to love it. But a funny thing happened along the way. We ended up feeling more meh-ed than wowed. I went for the iced coffee, and that's a mistake I wouldn't make here again. While good iced coffee is usually made cold pressed, Rowsters seemingly just ices their normal pourover coffee. The result is something smooth, but also really watery. Their normal pourover coffee was very well done and very tasty, but a step below excellent. More disconcerting was when the woman went to ask questions about the coffee, the barista didn't really offer any insight, Where usually at this kind of coffee shop you'd get a five-minute dissertation on brewing style, roasting method and flavor, our question netted a simple response of "They're all pretty similar," which isn't the kind of insight you want when you're laying down $5 for a cup of joe. Don't be mistaken, the regular cup of coffee is pretty good, albeit a four-star cup of coffee at a five-star price. Throw in the disappointing iced coffee and service and well, we'll be back but there are a couple of places we want to try first before we see if we caught Rowsters on a bad day. read more

We happened in to Rowster while in Grand Rapids for ArtPrize today - and wow, are we glad that we wandered this far afield. Excellent coffee in a fantastic space dished out by folks who take the preparation and consumption of good coffee seriously. In addition to our cappuccino and espresso, we were treated to endless glasses of fizzy water and samples of recently-arrived coffees. Rowster has only been open about 8 weeks, but already their coffee is turning up at Comet, Ann Arbor's premiere spot for a serious cup. While I love Comet, I wish Rowster were in OUR neighborhood, rather than two hours away in Grand Rapids. read more

A totally cool place to grab a quick cup of coffee. Even on a Saturday afternoon, this place was filled with girlfriends catching up over a latte, hipsters typing away on their Macbooks, and couples getting their caffeine fix. Let me make one thing clear, I have no freakin idea what a pour-over is. I'm honestly just now accustomed to the extreme buzz associated with drinking decent coffee. Even though this place seems to be a coffee snob haven, there was no intimidation factor and the barista was extra helpful with her recommendations. My latte was velvety smooth and perfectly rich. I was able to snag a cozy spot with a little coffee table, but I wish there had been a bit more space to sit at a table and work. Initially, I was excited to try this coffee shop out since I love coffee. However, I was not very impressed with the place: there's not very much seating, no menu, and the barista was not friendly. We stopped by about 4pm on a random Wednesday after lunch to grab a coffee and chat. When we walked in, there were about 7 very small 2 top tables to the right, the long counter to the left, and 4 bar stools in the front window. The only place open to sit was at the window, so we set our bags down and walked up to the counter to order. As we looked around to order, we noticed that there was no set no menu, just some signs about the roasts of the day.....my husband, who is not as picky about his coffee, looked at me confused. The barista said nothing to us; he could have said hello or asked if we had any questions. So I asked the barista about the coffee sodas that I had seen people post on yelp. He explained them to us: a shot of espresso mixed with simple syrup & sparkling soda. That sounded good after our heavy lunch, so we both ordered one......yikes, $10 later (plus tip) we got our drinks. They were served in pint glasses and were pretty tasty. I always like cream in my coffee, so I walked back up to the counter with my drink in hand. The barista took one look at me, saw the drink in my hand, ignored that I was standing there, and started making the drink for the person who just ordered. There was no "how's your drink? is everything ok with it? can I help you?" So I spoke up and asked if I could add a splash of cream to my coffee. The barista looked at me like I was crazy and handed me a small carafe of half & half. Overall, I liked my beverage, but didn't appreciate the lack of friendly customer service or the expensive prices. The lack of a menu with prices makes the place a bit mysterious, but also turns me off; I like to know what my options are.... I may give them another try and order a cup of regular coffee next time, but I'm not looking forward to paying $4. I'm also not a fan of serving coffee in beakers (Madcap does this also.) As a scientist that worked in a lab for almost a decade, serving coffee out of Pyrex lab glass not only doesn't impress me, but it makes me feel like they are trying too hard to be cool or unique. I do appreciate and love good, locally roasted coffee, but at some point, at $4 for a cup of coffee, that bubble is going to burst. read more

Wow! This place simply rocks! I stopped by here one afternoon when I was in town and this rivals some of the best coffee that I have had. I use the Latte as the apples to apples comparison, and it was HEAVENLY! I am still dreaming of it! I was so sold on the coffee, that I even picked up a bag of freshly roasted beans. And although they were a little on the pricey side, they made a pretty mean cup of coffee that has me smiling even more in the morning. I would HIGHLY recommend this place for sure. And I'm back... So, finally had the coffee - drum roll please.... DEL-LICIOUS! Melts in your mouth and spreads on your palette smooth and even. Currently drinking the Nicaraguan roast: The texture reflects the same in the aftertaste with a balance and lightness that leaves a hint of peanut better with a slight zest of fruit, but so minor that its hard to pick up without the proper attention. Therefore bumping my rating up that extra star - power up for 5 Rowsters. Bravo! Once again barista (forgot his name , sorry, dah!) was warm and wonderful. Greeted with a smile and a professional yet welcoming stance, and he gave me the options I have for the current drip coffees - I had tried to the Guatemalan (which because I frequently drink an Ethiopian Sidamo blend, thus Cameron suggested it as an equal if not better alternative!), also yummy - but the Nicaraguan is my favorite I must say. Although I know serving coffee in science-y "chemistry-ware" is a trendy at majority of contemporary coffee shops I have been to, I am happy Rowsters keeps up the trend. However, SUGGESTION: Handles on the Pyrex measuring 600ml 'pitcher' glasses that the coffee served to staying guests would be fabulous so one does not feel like playing hot potato while trying to pour coffee. Many lovely establishments have popped up in the years since I have moved out of GR, and I think Rowster takes the cake as most impressive. All aspects of the operation have luster, from the roasting equipment to the fine crema on the drinks. The utilitarian environment is comfortable enough to accomplish some work or reading, and simple enough to savor a stern moment with an incredible brew. On a rainy day in December I stopped in to sample some locally roasted brew. The dimly lit monochromatic atmosphere and disinterested attitude echoes the local Bohemian culture. The roaster located behind the bar was whirring loudly during my visit - not exactly the relaxing vibe I was looking for. I ordered a pour-over of the Costa Rica and took a seat on the hard wood bench. $4 for the coffee lifted my expectations. The coffee arrived and I poured into the warmed mug, a nice touch. The color was an immediate turn off - too light. Akin to cheap diner coffee. The first sip was very mellow with lots of earth and very little spice. One of the best cups of coffee you will ever have. The beans are roasted in house right behind the counter. The menu is minimalist, but that works to their advantage as they specialize on drinks which maximize the flavor of the coffee, not covering it up with thick, sugary syrups. I just stopped by yesterday with my two little boys, on a recommendation from my neighbor. I cannot exalt my knowledge or my experience in brewing or roasting, only my meek life getting by on Starbucks, Panera and my local place that serves an unknown brand. I've also been making my own espresso in my house with my lil Krups brand maker. Nothing compares. I have had in house roasted coffee from Herman's in Rockford, Kona coffee delivered from Hawaii...yet yesterday's vanilla latte was the best I've had in my life. It was strong, yet so smooth....I seriously can't stop thinking about it. Unfortunately, I am not wealthy enough to stop in and get a cup every day. I love coffee in all of its forms. However, the cappuccino with added vanilla flavoring was bitter and extremely overpriced ($4.50) for the very small (8 oz) cup. This is one of my favorite coffee shops. When I first walked in I was intimidated by the simplistic menu and fancy coffee people inside. But they were super friendly and helpful in helping me find a drink I would love. They use cute mugs and beakers to serve your coffee and it is a great place to do homework or catch up with a friend. This summer I have changed the way I look for coffee. No more Yelping coffee shops; I now enter coffee roasters. So many reviews on coffee shops describe the music, the couches, the lattes or even the hipsters! Hipsters?? Imagine a hipster at a coffee shop! I want to know how good the coffee is. Here at Rowsters, the focus is on coffee. Today, they had 3 single origin beans available for pour overs and they were made properly. The barristas were friendly and the music as faintly in the background, but again, the coffee was so very fresh and flavorful, and that my fellow coffee geeks is all that matters. The service was fabulous and attentive, they took the time to explain the differences in their roasts and were helpful with the suggestions.
