Put on by the Children's Magik Theatre in recent years it is a perfect event for fans as well as an introduction to his timeless works. Although this event is Free, at the Arneson Theatre entrance donations are encouraged which helps to fund their various programs. This season a theater troupe from Arkansas did an excellent rendition of "The Taming of the Shrew." The set design, costumes, sound system and the Riverwalk as a backdrop enhanced the night's performance. Seating is amphitheater style and it is on a first come, first serve basis. I suggest you get there early, by showtime all the good spaces are usually taken. The only thing missing for me, at least in terms of overall experience were the arts vendors and staff in character; which in the past tied everything together. Still I would recommend it to couples, students, families or anyone who wants to experience Shakespeare's plays in an outdoor venue. Shakespeare on the River is another great event that utilizes the historical Arneson Theatre. It is a family friendly event free and open to the public. Who knew that plays created in the 15th Century would still be relevant in San Antonio in 2017? ps. The Arkansas troupe played a cover of "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga before the show even started. It seems like a song appropriate for "The Taming of the Shrew."

Shakespeare on the River…read morestarted 11 years ago (I believe) and is brought to the La Villita Arneson River Theater by the only professional Children's theater in South Texas, Magik Theater. It's a superfun event that in the past entailed Shakespeare performances in the setting of a small-scale Renaissance fair including professional theater acts that frequent the Texas Renaissance and Sherwood Forest Fairs. This year, however, it appears strictly centered around bringing a professional Shakespearean theater company, Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre, to San Antonio to perform their own version of Shakespeare classics. Last night's performance of "Taming of the Shrew" was one of the best performances I had ever seen and it did not disappoint! The actors were hilarious, the Commedia dell'arte was spot on and perfectly timed, and scattered bits of pop culture really brought this performance into this century. Staying true to the story, but with a few funny twists, this troop is really worth seeing. This event runs Thursday through Saturday this year and is completely worth going to see. A $5 suggested donation towards the Magik Children's Theater will help provide a space for future performers ages 0-17 to learn and grow their own acting craft as well as continuing to allow the Magik Theater to provide fun events and child-focused theater for years to come.

But because they were running a little behind we were able to catch a few of the short films as well so it was a nice added bonus! Service: It's a pretty small theater but all of the attendants were helpful with all of our questions and the concession stand workers were fast with the orders so that's always a nice tough Atmosphere: Again with it being pretty small it does provide you with a more intimate setting which is also good for dates. I will say though the seats are pretty standard so don't be expecting to recline and veg out watching your feature here. Also the speakers are placed directly in the front of the first row of seats so it's best to sit a few rows back if you don't wanna get blasted by the audio. Price: Unfortunately I can't give an honest review on that just because it was a free event for me but as far as the concession stand goes it's quite fair! $4 for their biggest popcorn and while not the biggest size in the industry it's definitely some of the tastiest popcorn I have had from a theater and you get a free refill. Drink are $2 a pop so that's not too bad either. They had other items but I don't remember their set price. Overall I enjoyed my experience here and wouldn't mind coming again for another night!

I will say if you go for an orchestra, avoid the lower orchestra outer edge seats as there's no exit aisle. You have to walk past your entire row to get to the spot if you are a bigger man. Most shows will have an intermission which allows you to get up, use RR, grab a quick snack and get back to your seat in time for the action. Modern meets classic. Classic exterior, modern exterior and interior. I suggest coming for a classical music performance and when coming with a date, sit in the mezzanine. Great view and feels more intimate.

Prepaid garage or valet parking options are available as well as a convenient parking lot a short walk away. The show was loud, especially for an acoustic performance, but the sound quality was great. Overall, there is a variety of price points, so you can splurge on club seating with table service, or choose the balcony to save the piggy bank. We sat in the mezzanine section however next time I would prefer to sit closer to the stage. While some of the ticket prices were on the high side, you can sign up for the newsletter to receive discounts on upcoming shows. The price of drinks was outrageous but sadly typical for a concert. I did not order food or beverages but be sure you view the menu / price list ahead of your visit. There was no meet & greet or photo opportunity offered for this event but I hope that is an option at future events. Definitely consider the Tobin when your favorite band is in town!

The Carlos Álvarez Studio Theater is a hidden gem within the Tobin complex. Per their website, it…read moreis a "blank canvas that is customizable for any event". This is a world apart from the Tobin. Wifey and I saw small production play and thoroughly enjoyed the venue. Note that Tobin Center garage is not available and that you cannot reserve parking in advance. Thus, you can park "live" at the nearby Tobin surface parking lot or use your phone app to find parking within a 5-minute walk. The entrance to Carlos Álvarez Studio Theater is to the left of the Tobin's main entrance. There is no "lobby", hence then name "studio theater". You can take stair or elevator a short flight up. There is small fully stocked bar. For the play, there were riser seats and perhaps 300 people in the venue. It was comfy, fun, and intimate.

This DreamWorks presentation was another hit for me and the younger members of our group--they enjoyed the movie just as much as we adults did.
