My friend and I decided to see a movie at the last minute and bought tickets online. The online purchase process was smooth and straight forward. When I arrived I was greeted by an employee who verified my ticket and told me where I'd find the auditorium where the movie would be showing. I was happy to see how clean the theater was. The auditorium was also clean and the reclining seats were comfy. My friend got a beer at the bar and we were impressed with the size and price. I didn't order any concessions this visit but I'll be sure to come back for the full experience. read more

The staff here is always friendly and the facility is usually always clean in the main areas and theaters. However recently the look of the chairs is horrible. Some don't recline, others are quite literally peeling! The bathrooms are also ALWAYS nasty with water running and toilets disgusting. It's better than a few years ago but still dirty, the popcorn is always super premade and there's constant power outages. Mauricio the Manager just gave some rain pass tickets, like really? Gas, time, and your only apology is "try again later" ? I know the movie business is hurting so you have to up-charge 500% value for snacks but geez Louise throw in a soda for crying out loud. You have hundred of people that wasted time and energy just for you to stand at the door handing out flyers for manager salary. Where's the email/text notifications that the power is out? We frequent the Mayan and Santikos theaters 1-2 times a week. I did notice that the snack bar at the Mayan usually only has 1 register during the day and 2 max in the evenings, their busiest time. They could also try fixing their seats that don't recline or that have cracked leather that sticks to customers legs. We usually sit in the first two rows and seats over the railings. The bar is never open and we are usually late to our movies. We have to wait on someone to come work the bar and fix our drinks. If they're under staffed, the bar wait is longer. So be there 30 minutes early or be late to your movie. We have mentioned this to management several times and nothing changes. We never have these issues at the palladium or casa Blanca. Staff is very nice at their locations most of the times. read more

Was harassed by the cop in the lobby as soon as I walked in. Was asked if I was on drugs? Really? Bought my ticket, then was told by employee, the cop could decide if I could watch the movie or not. This was the first time I've been to movie theater, and my experience was fantastic. They are very clean and the seats were so cozy. They recline and food can be delivered to your seats. They have an arcade area plus a bar in the lobby. The movie experience was excellent. Great surround sound and quality pictures. The staff were excellent at what they do, and were polite. We originally searched for a movie grill and this place kept popping up but its no alamo, or an sit and get served spot turns out its just like a regular theater. If we would have known we wouldn't have purchased tickets online ahead of time. I'm not sure if its an google or search screw up or if its listed incorrectly. But the food wasn't exactly good for its price and most of the Coca-Cola machines were out we had to fish for the drinks we wanted. Even the 3d screen seemed off. Will definitely make sure we research and look at reviews before picking another movie grill theater. read more

Back in the day it used to have a theme to it and Mayan music playing while you waited. Not sure if it's weird but the southside in me misses that ha. Unsafe, dirty, shady people. Evertime we go always hear people arguing. Please consider a police escort in the building. Parking is a mess, run by teenagers unprofessional manager. Food is no good,smells bad overall, never going back again, and I do not recommend it. Save your money people and go to another theater. read more

These people are seriously RUDE!!!!! Considering they have no customers, they decide to go tell us to stop talking outside their front curb area. We meet some friends there. They started talking with us and Jonathan the manager told us that we had to leave. I explained that we were buying tickets. We were not holding up traffics. There were no other customers. A couple of minutes later, another manager amberly runs us off. I asked to speak to manager and she kept insisting that it was her.. might explain the lack of customers!! Great theater with great early day specials. Only one person working concession so are early enough to get food if don't want to miss previews. It was about 8 minutes wait and then had to go make drink. This is my go to place for early afternoon movie. Area is pretty sketchy at night and parking can be a problem. read more

Many, many centuries ago The Mayan Palace was once a great theater called, "The Century South." I saw films like, "Grease", " Carrie" and "Jaws" here back in the day. It became a Southside staple, and along with the Mission Drive-In became one of my favorite places to frequent. But all things must pass as it eventually succumbed to neglect and deterioration. In recent years and by community support Santikos renovated the facade and interior with a contemporary look to match. Although missing was the charm of its former glory, it seemed to fit in perfectly within the community. But now: There is zero parking here. There is no first come, first serve, first seating like other Santiko's locations. Instead you have to pick where you want to be seated as though you were buying tickets to a concert. This process can be extremely time consuming and inefficient. To add to my dismay while I was waiting in line a lady in front of me, who looked like an extra from "Scarface" asked the booth person whilst buying her ticket, "What is the movie about?" The whole affair created traffic and the line grew longer. In its favor the theater interior is sleek and modern. The ushers are friendly and helpful. The concession area, however leaves much to be desired. It has the vibe of a mall food court on a Saturday. Children frantically run throughout this area as though it were a Minecraft convention. It is loud and a bit over done. Instead of offering simple concession items, again like other locations it tries too hard to please too many demographics. For example why carry a limited amount of adult items such as: beers and pretzels. And then have an overabundance of kid's items: such as candies and five million varieties if drinks? It would be best served to identify itself as a place that caters specifically to families, to children.( which after all is their target audience.) And carry on as such. After escaping the droves of children who were refilling their cups with Icees and parents who had their arms preoccupied with drinks and spilling popcorn; I adjourned to my assigned seat. Initially when I sat in the theater room I was struck by how small and intimate the space was. Although I liked the idea of it, I began to imagine how it must be in the event of a blockbuster film. The more I ruminated on the idea the smaller the room became. In addition most of the patrons didn't even abide by the assigned seat they purchased. For example a couple that arrived late was hoping to sit in the back where I was sitting. Noticing(again this is the seat I chose when I purchased my ticket) that I probably took his typical spot, he said choice words to me and went with on with his date to his seat. Needless to say my experience here was not the best one. Not like when I saw King Kong with Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange back in the day. Or a couple of years back to see the film, "UP." The fact that parking spaces are scarce, you have to choose a seat at the ticket booth, the concession area is bonkers and no one abides by the ticket policy is why I forego the theater experience these days. There was a time when films were a perfect mode of escape. Unfortunately with theaters like this one I'm to trying to find ingenious ways of escaping it. read more

This place is convenient and I've been coming here since before it was called the Mayan. I still can't get over how ridiculously overpriced all the food is. Yes, I know all movie theatres are overpriced but somehow I feel like I get robbed here more than any other place. Overall, the place is clean and has decent arcade games and a dining area with a couple of tv's so you can arrive early, grab some food and sit down at a table before your movie starts. However, good luck finding a decent parking spot. It's just always full up front. I usually have to park away from the theatre where I don't feel comfortable especially after dark. On my last visit, I noticed a beefed up menu featuring some tasty appetizers. The fried corn balls did not disappoint. I spent about $30 on food but I still hadn't ordered the popcorn. I wanted to save that for the actual movie. However, they have a better deal on the soda and popcorn together so I requested two water cups for me and my daughter to enjoy with our $30 meal. To my surprise, the cashier said he was not allowed to give away water cups when there was a huge stack of them right behind him. I argued with him and finally offered to PAY for the darn 3oz cups and still he refused. This is just abusive in my opinion. I was really PO'd by this point and left without anything to drink. I mean really! I event told him that I planned on returning before the movie for the 10-gallon $5 cups but apparently his manager was watching him like a hawk and he couldn't budge. After I left fuming (really, all I wanted was a cup of freaken water!), he snuck out and gave me three cups! He explained that his manager was to blame. Who has time to go through stupid arguments like this? It's just not worth my blood pressure. What ever happened to the customer is always right? Isn't it the law that they are supposed to provide you with water? I then decided I'd only buy one trough of a soda cup for my daughter and I to share during the film. Then to top it off, the film was awful. $50+ down the drain. At least the corn balls were good. read more

Never ever ever have I had a bad experience here. Yes this theater is up and coming. However, they are very good. Staff and management are very nice and competent. I've had the popcorn, soda, treats, and food. All has been very good. I have never had anything bad from here, service or food. Movies are always at 100% visually and sound. There is plenty of parking, even if there is a small walk to the doors. I rate 5 stars!!!!! read more

I have been coming to this place since I was a teenager. I think it was owned by someone else, back then. Lol. I look at this place now and it has changed. Changed for the better. We went to see Aquaman. We got there early. They have an arcade. I didn't get a chance to take a picture because my phone was dying and I was having so much fun that day, nothing else mattered. My wife and my son went off to race...its a video game, so my daughter and I went to go save the universe in Starwars!!! Then of course, we had to get refreshments before the movie. This place has not been given the credit that it deserves. I will provide more pictures next time we come. My bad. Anyway, we bought two large sodas and a large popcorn for around $17.50. Which is ok, I mean it's a movie theater, you pay for the entertainment. I haven't even gotten to the good part yet. The kids and mom had sodas. It was time for Dad to get his refreshments at the beautiful bar they have located towards the entrance. Don't worry, My wife is driving..lol. So, you can only buy wine, and beer. You cannot order liquor. No shots. However, they do have frozen drinks that contain liquor. They have a frozen, rum or bourbon, and coke...frozen not on the rocks, frozen margaritas, and two others. The bartender explained to me their policy on the amount of drinks I was allowed to have. That is very reasonable. A theater has children, families. No body wants to see some drunk guy causing problems. This place promotes drinking responsibility. So the seats, in the theater, are real big and comfortable. They also recline. I love going there. Just gotta make sure I don't fall asleep. Lol. Ive never had a bad experience here. It's a good place to bring your children. I think I spent around 30 dollars for the four tickets to Aquaman. Then before we left my daughter whipped me in air hockey. That's ok, because I payed her back in Dance Dance Revolution!!!! If you're ever in town and you want to take your children to see a movie, I recommend this place. Family is important. This place is family friendly, comfortable, and fun. The facility: filthy outside and filthy inside. Certainly NOT because of the staff!! They were very well staffed and busy and cleaning the entire time. It was filthy bc of the trashy patrons who are just as bad as their 10 kids and run around, act awful, and are loud and messy. Sound was awful for 2 reasons. 1. It's a crappy sound system and needs to be updated and redone, and #2...once again, THE TYPE OF PATRONS!! Tatted up ghetto vibe... (I like tattoos on people who don't act like degenerates) loud, obnoxious, entitled, foul mouthed, arguing with "f*** you" across the room DURING THE MOVIE or burping so loud it echoed, laughing at the burping, tons of loud, small children running up and down the stairs. Even in the rare 5 min of quiet from the trashy people, the volume was so low that you couldn't hear over someone eating chips or reclining their seat 2 ROWS AWAY. Lights weren't dimmed like they are in other theaters so it was way to bright which provided a safe play area for the children who's parents don't parent, so they could run up and down the stairs the entire movie, so that's lovely. Air conditioner was either not working or set so low, we were sweating against the pleather seats. Staff was helpful, and immediately handled a jerk who tried to intimidate me and the 4 kids I was there with by shoving his tickets in our faces bc we actually wanted to sit in our assigned seats that we picked and paid for. How DARE we???!! Ghetto trash patrons who will continue to ruin this place for others. Management should start making it less of a "free for all" and put up some signs about foul language or unaccompanied children and just start throwing people out who act like they just got out of prison or a gang, and maybe they could turn this into a nice place. They certainly have a great staff. Until then, STAY AWAY. Pay the money and make the drive to get out of the hood, feel safe walking back and forth to your vehicle, actually have somewhere to park, and get to enjoy the movie that you CAN ACTUALLY HEAR. read more

I'm guessing this is the official yelp site for the Mayan. There's two other ones floating around but no one has commented on either of those. I like that this theater exists--especially here on the Southside. Before, I don't remember there being a "nice" theater at the Military/35 junction. And when the Mayan opened up it was all new... but time takes it's toll even on the finest of temples and theaters, and without upkeep and maintenance, well, you're going to run into problems. Problems like a speaker playing static and a door that sticks and little water pressure in the bathroom. While the latter two didn't distract from my movie-going experience, the first one did as anytime the score played high notes or something beyond the middle-range I heard the static distortion along with it. And this wasn't on a movie at the tail end of it's run. This was during a daytime showing of Inception--a relatively new film. I first noticed the problems with the speaker during the previews and alerted an usher prior to the start of the movie. And after the show ended I spoke with someone who I believe was either a manager or service agent--she sat at the little station to the left as you enter the theater, and wore a different uniform than the young people working throughout the rest of the building. When I informed her of the problems with the sound system she pretty much brushed me off, saying that no one else had come out to complain. Well if I'm the first one to say anything then that might explain why! What really irritated me was the fact that she did not even think about investigating for herself, but rather dismissed my concern. The bottom line is that I don't expect to encounter problems with the picture or sound when going to a first-run film at a state-of-the-art theater. I can't imagine paying evening prices for the "D-Box" experience ($16? $18?) and sitting through static and interference. Instead of living up to the glories of your name, Mayan, you've disappointed me. read more

The Mayan is convenient if you live on this side of town or if you live in the downtown area. I'm surprised there hasn't been other reviews written on this place given it's bad reputation as of the past few months. That being said, every theater goes through a bad spell (Quarry Market circa 2010, for example) and during that bad spell things are really really bad. The parking lots are packed, the lines are long, the pour your own beverage stands are trashed and the AC isn't blowing as cold as it should be in the summer time. I hope the Mayan will make it through the bad spell. It's such a cool themed theater. read more

I would advise that if you want to watch a movie at this theater that you go on a day when there aren't too many people. It can be a nice experience if the theater isn't over run with children pushing their way to the drink machines or spilling popcorn everywhere as they run past you nearly knocking you over. The assigned seating is pointless. It should be first come first serve seating like other theaters. If you're the first in line or towards the front of the line, aren't you going to pick the seats you want anyway? Why waste time staring at a screen trying to figure out where you normally sit? The process is time consuming and slows down the line to purchase tickets. The best thing about the theater is the matinee prices and specials on hot dogs during the week. I don't know how long they've had the $5 combo, but for five bucks Monday through Friday before 5pm you get a small popcorn and a 24 oz drink with free refills. On Wednesdays the hot dogs are only $1. If you have any complaints, I wouldn't advise talking to a manager. They are rude. Also, the bathrooms are not conveniently located. They are way in the back of the building past the concession stand and arcade machines. read more

This was my first time there and it is not a clean place. My daughter went to use the restroom and ending up throwing up the dinner we just had because the stalls were filthy. Someone had smeared their sanitary napkin on the walls. They only had 2 concession lines open and someone needed to monitor the drink area as kids were horsing around and there was a mess and lack of straws. read more
