O5/10/23: Stopped in as I was in the neighborhood. As I'm not close to Allan's I saw they have current rolls so decided to try. Of course $20+ later I have current rolls, oxtail Roti and saltfish pie. Small interior, friendly staff and various carriben bakery items to choose from. Saltfish pie..basically similar to an empanada. Very spicy a bit salty but I thoroughly enjoyed. Oxtail Roti. He asked if I wanted spicy I said yes. However, at home ready to partake was not spicy at all. Oxtail, wasn't a fan of the taste. It didn't taste bad but there wasn't any wow factor. Also I think it has to do with the seasoning. Each island although we basically cook the same things the seasoning tend to differ. This was very apparent I think this was a trini spot. Would I get it again, probably not, but I am open to try others like the shrimp and definitely the saltfish pie Currant Roll: sorry but Allan's is still the top. But if I can't get to Allan's Royal is good alternative. Moist , flaky not overly sweet. It was enjoyable. I would return to try other options. read more

I'm writing because I feel disrespected and disappointed in the service I received at Royal Bakery. We ordered a birthday cake which cost $65. When they provided us the cake on pick up day it had no frosting, even though slices of the same carrot cake they sell in the bakery are frosted. When I asked if they could simply sell me some frosting to go with it, the young man at the counter just laughed at me and said no. Perhaps he just thought it was funny -- but I did not, nor did the birthday girl. I used to love this place. Unfortunately I will not go back. read more

I love this place for its fresh baked bread and pastries. And don't sleep on the roti, dbls and patties all tasty as well. Yesterday i was in the mood for some hot baked bread did i say fresh?! Its baked fresh every morning just an FYI they don't open the doors till after 10. So while you standing outside on the long line don't complain because the aroma coming from inside the oven! Baby it will have you mesmerized. I got a loaf of butter bread, 2 sweet coconut buns and a beef patty "which I ate walking home" . Sorry no pic of it next time lol. But the bread my goodness for $4 definitely worth it. Soft warm a lil sweet with butter. You wont be disappointed go check them out in Crown Heights. Royal Bakery is a must-visit location if you're looking to explore the various flavors of Brooklyn! Plenty of big name roti shops in the neighborhood but this place is a quiet contender not to be missed. Doubles are one of my favorites, don't forget the pepper sauce. I was an Ali's fan so after the pandemic when the neighborhood was shocked by their closure I began my search for a new spot. I haven't played with the full menu yet but they have a good Buss up, I like to order the breakfast veggies to put together a plate for the buss up. Solid doubles, I always ask for extra tamarind sauce. As ever with Trinidadian food do not mess with spicy unless you are high level pro. They don't mess around. Peanut punch is a must. Found this place by accident as I was craving bake and saltfish buy my go to spot ( Ali's , Bake n tings and Jen's) were either closed or sold out. I got bake and saltfish, doubles, sorrel, and a angustora lemon lime and bitters. Food was ok doubles a little drier than I like and saltfish same. Nothing special but wasn't bad. Everybody's talkin' 'bout cronuts Funny, but it's still Royal & Roti to me What to get: Saltfish Pie, Doubles, Currant Roll. What else: Everything. And: More Billy Joel later. First I have to write this review and go hit on guys at the gym. Other Caribbean bakeries have opened up in Brooklyn, but they realized what Lorde realized. "We'll never be Royal. It don't run in our blood. That kind of amazing baking quality and standard just ain't for us. We sell a different kind of buss-up shot. Let me sell you roti. You can call me Carib-B." And so on. This is my favourite bake shop in the whole country, I think. Definitely my fave Caribbean bake shop. It's the only place I've ever had "Doubles" that were better than the recently-opened Michelle's in Buffalo, NY. But the Doubles aren't even the star attraction here. The Saltfish Pie is! Before I tell you in more detail about the food here, let me also delight you with the knowledge that (a) service is absolutely lovely here. Attentive and friendly, whether you're buying 1 thing for 2 dollars, or 30 things. And speaking of dollars, that's the other great thing about Royal. It's dirt cheap! I mean shockingly, amazingly cheap. You can get absolutely stuffed here for 5 or 6 dollars. Amazing value for money with all this home-baked goodness. Let me list all the things I love: Saltfish Pie - this is one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten. Bear in mind, it's a little dry and very very flaky, and the salt inside is extremely fishy and extremely salty (like smoked kippers, or Dutch smoked fish). But it's also one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten. They don't always have it, but when they do, I'm in heaven. Speaking of Saltfish Pie, do you want some of my Salt in your Fish Pie? Milk Rolls - a little dry, but very different and enjoyable. Now would you like some of my milk in your roll? Currant Rolls - amazingly good, less dry, full of currents and sweetness and crustiness, so unbelievably indescribably amazing, one of my fave desserts/baked goods in town, try them. Would you like my currant in your roll? Banana Coconut Bread - exactly what it sounds like, and as delicious as you could imagine it would be. Would you like my Banana and my Coconuts in your Bread? Fish Balls - my balls are slightly better tasting (all the guys in Greenwich Village say so, and they would know, I'm down there every night at 3am because I can't get enough), however these balls are damn good too. A little fishy, but then, if they weren't, they probably wouldn't be called fish balls. Nice and greasy too and I like that. Would you like my balls in your fish? And of course - Doubles - and I adore doubles, they're cheap, filling, and orgasmically good. Most people that try them are shocked at how much they love them. And these are the best Doubles I've ever had... the ones in Buffalo are second only to these. And you may think that it's big now, but when I get excited, it Doubles in size. Let me explain what Doubles are: A doubles (it's always plural, even when it's singular) is a soft puffy kind of pita-ish pastry that is more doughy and not at all flaky... it's squidgy. It's filled with chick peas and spices and sauce, and topped with very hot fruity sauce. I'm not someone who likes fruit mixed into my savoury food, but I make a huge exception for doubles. I even ask for extra fruity sauce so it will really blow my head off. You can have that hot sauce added to anything from Royal Bakery, and it's amazing. In fact, the only thing more delicious than Royal Bakery is going in the back alley and pleasuring the various male customers that catch my eye. The homosexual references in today's 9 reviews are dedicated to today's wonderful and long-overdue US Supreme Court Decision to make Gay Marriage legal in all States. I believe you can get all kinds of other Caribbean goodies such as Roti from here, and I'm looking forward to trying all of them in the future. Totally in love with this place. We were staying in this neighborhood and after strolling around, stumbled upon this bakery restaurant which specializes in Caribbean, Trinidadian, and Chinese food. Yes, Chinese food! I believe it's more like a Chinese-Caribbean fusion? They had chow mein and fried rice on the menu! After greeting the lady behind the counter, I asked what was most popular and she answered roti. Suddenly, another patron who just received his order, turned to us and exclaimed, "Doubles. You have to get the Doubles. Look here." and proceeded to show us his just-bitten, steaming hot pastry. I commented, "Oh! It's curried chickpeas wrapped in a roti? It looks and smells really good!" The man affirmed, " Yes, give it a try. I promise you won't regret it." I thanked him for the recommendation and turned back to the lady to order the Doubles to go. The man was absolutely correct in that we certainly didn't regret ordering it. The Doubles came out piping hot - pretty sure we burned our fingers just holding it. As I bit into the Doubles, my mouth immediately felt the heat emanating as well as that curry kick. My taste buds were in heaven! Eating this was a bit of a conundrum because the curry flavor whets your appetite, but the hot temperature burns your tongue. Can you imagine eating this in the summer? We were standing outside sweating as we tried to scarf this down. Note: if you wait too long, the curry sauce disintegrates the flatbread to into a hot, yellow mess. Roti's of every variety but certainly not the best I've ever eaten. I'm partial to the shrimp roti with extra pepper, although a bit of extra filling would be lovely. Royal Bakery & Roti House also offers Chinese cuisine. I've tried the lo mein and fried rice. They were both decent but nothing to really get my wheels spinning.The bread pudding here is supreme. Slices are thick, super moist and sticky sweet. I take my bread pudding home, warm it up in the toaster oven and pick out the raisins. Yum! read more

Delicious food, freshly made and reasonably priced, with helpful, friendly staff. I dropped by Royal for a late take away lunch and being famished, ended up ordering with my eyes. I got some home made sorrel, two huge, spicy white meat chicken curry roti, five spicy doubles, three chicken patties, four beef pies, a piece of banana cake and a piece of fruit cake. All of that came to less than $40. I had a delicious double and a flaky, spicy meat pie when I got back to the office. The rest of the food came home with me, for the family to rate. My 8 year old daughter loved both types of cake (only $2 per huge slice) and my wife had a big thumbs up for the chicken roti and the meat pie. The sorrel was delicious and I followed my boss' advice to water it down a little when drinking it. Lastly I have to say how friendly the lady at the counter was. This place is official! Where do I start....hmmm ok food! If you want a roti the size of a small planet then this is the place for you! If you want some delish trini style Chinese food (fried shrimp wontons.....CRACK) Baked goods: Coconut rolls...so damn good. Currant rolls so damn good. Milk biscuits so damn good. The pound cake should be illegal in 3 states and they give you a giant hunk for a very cheap price. I once took my daughter in with me when she was 3 and she wanted to order and pay on her own. Mind you the counter was like 3 feet taller than her but when the young man looked and saw her down there he thought it was cute and gave her the currant roll for free. Which was very nice . Tennis rolls anyone? Dumb title, I know. Walking past various bakeries around Crown Heights/Bed Stuy, I kept seeing signs advertising "Tennis Rolls." I grew up playing tennis, and, despite knowing that there was likely only an extremely tenuous connection, I was intrigued. Because I'm lazy (or potentially forgot) I neglected to look up what a Tennis Roll actually is before trying one tonight. After an unsuccessful search for a quick jerk chicken fix (I ended up at Popeye's...) I stopped at Royal Bake and Roti House on Nostrand Avenue for doubles and a Tennis Roll. The double-- which is not pictured because they always look disgusting-- was great. Best bara I've had yet-- thin and chewy, with the tangy pepper sauce complementing the firm channa. Really one of the best doubles I've tried yet. I bit into my Tennis Roll fully expecting it to be stuffed with some type of unknown goodness-- like a pork bun or some kind of coconut custard. This seemed like a perfectly reasonable expectation. Yet, to my surprise, it turned out to be a simple, slightly sweet dinner roll. They're Guyanese and so named because they're round like tennis balls. That doesn't really seem like an apt description, but I like the name and I like the roll. read more

First time coming here as I have been going to another local Trini spot just up the street from this location all my life and when I tell y'all I've been missing out !! Shiiiiitttt.. let me start off with customer service .. 5 . I was greeted, immediately and serviced, my granddaughter was even offered a slice of coconut cake for free ( the piece was generous) I wanted to order everything in there just for taste test purposes but I was able to maintain self control and ordered the chicken roti (the skin was so soft) , and fish dinner, also a slice of that coconut cake ( omg it's so good) one hard doe bread ( it taste and felt like a bread just baked in the oven) 2 coconut rolls and two sorrels .. ALL of it was DELICIOUS! And the price was shockingly inexpensive ( I'm not complaining tho) I WILL be returning this weekend to order up big this time. I'm so glad I live close by this place. They have THE best roti in Brooklyn. I always went to Ali's on Fulton St for the vegetable roti, but now I am in favor of Royals. When I get my usual vegetable roti at Royals it is always SOO much bigger than the rotis at Ali's and a couple $$ cheaper! I've also tried the coconut bake here and it is amazing. Great food across the board, and at great prices too. Royal is a place where you can spend as little as you want ($5 or less) or as much as you want and still fill up on some great cooking. The staple is the doubles (curried chickpeas in fried dough) at $1.50 a pop--try them with "pepper" (spicy) and/or tamarind sauce (a bit sweet). The aloo (potato) pies are also great, and quite large and filling at $2 each. They also usually have dahl (lentil soup) available for $1 a cup. All of these are amazing. The saltfish pie is also a solid option, as are the currant rolls, which make a nice dessert. If you're looking for something heftier, the roti is also amazing and a great deal. I've only had the chicken roti, but at $6 it's a great value, and way more than I can eat in one sitting. It's filled with chicken (often on the bone--be careful), potatoes and chickpeas, wrapped in a roti. This is one of those places where I'm always coming back and rarely manage to try something new, since what I've had in the past is just so good. I would definitely recommend Royal to anyone. read more

I love this joint! I have been going to Royal's forever; since I was a kid. They have some of the best West Indian food I have had, not cooked in my own home.
