I always enjoy dropping by a RBG. They have a lot of interesting and unique products, one of my favorites are the refrigerated chocolate truffle bars (there's a lavender one that is soooo very pleasant!). I've seen some of the items they sell here at Trader Joe's for eg but they have a lot of otherwise unique stuff. They do sell premade stuff as well, I saw someone sampling something at the counter. This isn't a big place and because it's more upscale things ARE more expensive here, I'd never do routine grocery shopping here. But if you're passing by, you can reliably find a native Austin beer, quick meal, unique snack, etc. read more

I have to give 5 stars because even though there is one employee that treats me with a cruel demeanor, the rest of the staff at this location is absolutely amazing. The store is always clean, neatly stocked, and the food and drinks they serve are top notch! Definitely worth the $$$ read more

Once upon a time, a Yelper was making corned beef and cabbage for a St. Patty's Day dinner party. And once upon a time, the young Yelper forgot about the horseradish sauce! Unwilling to drive to the nearest grocery store in the city limits because of SXSW craziness, the Yelper walked over to the Royal Blue Grocery off of Nueces to find horseradish. To the store associate's surprise, they were all out of the other necessary ingredient: Mayonnaise! The associate got creative and packaged up some mayonnaise for this young yelper since they make sandwiches in the back. So helpful! Woo hoo for the adorablest and awesomest "convenience store" downtown Austin. Every time I've stepped into a RBG, the staff has been excellent. I live off of Rainey Street and I'm so pumped for the new location to open up. Also, their drip pecan coffee is the jam. read more

Royal Blue is primarily a high end convenience store with a limited prepared food menu. They have the typical deli case items (sandwiches, salads, etc). They also have cold pizza that they heat up. The other choice is a pre-prepared sandwich that they cook on a panini press, which I opted for. I got the veggie grilled cheese and I was pleasantly surprise, it sufficed for lunch and was fairly tasty. With their limited menu, I have little reason to come back and try other foods, but it was a nice break during the day. read more

Love the atmosphere, the idea, the location, all the local stuff. (Food is so great!!!!) I come in here all the time and buy wonderful things. Yes they are pricey, but sandwiches, cookies, nuts, and wine are great, however there is this one lady who is always there that is very impolite to customers and even the people delivering stuff. Customers service... they could work on that. You can't help but to feel very belittled here as if the workers are better than the customers. Kind of a stuck up place to come to. My hubby and I were visiting from L.A. We went to the 7-11 next door(which doubles as a homeless center apparently) and quickly left, remembering that we had walked past Royal Blue earlier in the day. So we went next door to experience this "trendy" Austin convenience store. It was cool when you walk in. Great decor but "normal" products on the shelf. Pretty cool. We arrived at 11pm (they close at midnight) and saw that the guy had just pulled a plate load (and I mean literally like 7 stacks of hand-made sandwiches) out of the refrig. I asked if he could heat one up for me and he responded unceremoniously "No". Uh, ok. There was no explanation, just "No". I asked if they were closed and he said, again, "No". Mr. Monosyllabic was having nothing of anything resembling customer service. No, no, no. I finally got him to "graciously" give us one of the sandwiches cold, picked up some chicken salad from the refrigerated section, and a blackberry crumble bar at the cash register. We took it back to the hotel and ate it all. The food was delicious. So, given that Austin has delicious food at every corner, I am going to have to give this place two stars as I really have experienced better. So, Mr. "No", work on your customer service a little....no, make that a lot.....and you guys might bet a better rating. After all, customer service is FREE. read more

Convenient to downtown residences and a nice selection of products. I enjoy grabbing one of their premade sandwiches or one of the wraps. It is a little on the more expensive side compared to a traditional grocery store but probably on par with Whole Foods. The staff is always friendly. They are open late. The selection at Royal Blue Grocery is something very rare. They have very commercial snacks such as Lays, Ruffles, Sprite, Dr. Pepper, but they have very non-typical brands here. I love Arizona Tea and everywhere else I live by does not have it, but Royal Blue is a place I can always count on. The staff is respectful and so kind. I absolutely love this place. Although the only one I go to is the one off of 4th Street across from Mellow Johnny's, my understanding is that there are other locations. So they have East Side Pies, they deliver, they carry a GREAT selection of beer and wine, plus fresh veggies and fruits...plus they are super cool people. I mean, what else do you want? I finally am compelled to break down and write a Royal review... First, my rating is almost exclusively based on two things: incredible consistency in hipster, condescending staff as well as "c'mon that's a little steep" for...everything in the store. I totally understand they gotta pay the rent in this urban locale and I'm sure it's a hard business to run, but hiring polite, Austin friendly staff is still a cultural value in our town even if it's just at a grocery store (hello, this is why whole foods was extremely successful at selling epensive quality products...their staff embodies their product.) I just don't get how hard it is to be nice to people regardless of how many tattoos they have or don't have. The quality and unique selection here make it extremely awesome. It is of course the most convenient place for all us downtowners to grab a six pack or emergency blue bell. I really do feel bad knocking this place because my heart wants to love it but I finally had to express my concern over their uninviting staff so hopefully things might change. read more

I have pretty-much fallen in love with this place! This is a great, little local grocery store, that is friendly and convenient to downtown dwellers. It has pretty-much everything you would need. If they don't have something, you can request it and they will get it for you. George, the manager, knows his customers by name and he goes out of his way to please everyone. They have a great selection of wine, cheese and snacks, and the majority of their products are healthy/organic foods, which is perfect for late-night snacking. I especially like the food they prepare in-house because it is always so yummy. I love their hours because they are always open. I visit Royal Blue almost everyday now, and I highly recommend this place to anyone in the neighborhood! read more

This is Royal Blue's 2nd location, on the groundfloor of the 360 condominiums. (Across the street from Mellow Johnny's). Much larger, with a bigger grocery selection, and more take out food, including slices of the best flavors of East Side Pies, yay! They have a pizza oven, so slices are hot and fresh, no nukes here! Sure, some of their grocery items are pricey, but I'm still delighted that there is a place to buy regular items like milk and sandwiches, along with those high-end groceries I indulge in every now and then. As a downtown worker-bee, I'm glad that they are walking distance from my office. And, they are open at 7 am! read more

I am so happy this place exists. It is about two minutes walk from my apartment so the convenience factor is huge for me. Other than that, it's a pretty cool store in itself. The grocery selection is definitely limited but you can usually find something that strikes your fancy. I will say that the product I've bought there hasn't lasted very long and didn't taste too fresh. I won't be buying fruits/veg there again. But I love how I can pick up a last minute bottle of wine, some polenta, The Laughing Cow cheese, flowers, East Side Pies, and random normal grocery items in such a cute little store so close to me. Royal Blue Grocery takes requests for items, which is pretty awesome. They jack up their prices, but that is to be expected. You're paying for convenience, which is only fair. If you want to save money, plan out your day and drive to HEB. Free wine tasting each Thursday from 5-7. Seating outside to enjoy the sandwich and/or beer you just bought from there. Open til midnight (such a benefit!) and they deliver too if you want to be lazy or live a bit further away. read more

Updating my review based on a polite message from the owner and another visit today: - They DO carry plain Greek yogurt (in the same cooler as the White Mountain Bulgarian); however, it was out of stock when I had visited last month. It was in-stock today; $2.50 for the small Fage 7 oz cups. - They do have a tablet POS that accepts NFC payments. I believe this was not up when I visited last month, though I am not 100% sure. - I did not mention this in my first review, but I am dismayed that the pricing of some items is unclear. E.g. for the raspberries and blackberries, I can't find pricing info anywhere. - I almost bought a lettuce + a little bit of olives, cheese, onion salad for $7 (similar w/chicken for $7.50) before realizing that similar salads down the street at Trader Joe's cost $3.50-4. read more

I can get burnt out on burgers pretty easily, but this place is always a favorite and I enjoy even when I'm not on the mood for it. Only available on Wednesdays, it is busy for lunch. This Austin-centric grocery store, though it does not offer a lot of produce, is awesome in all aspects. Yes, it is PRICEY, but the quality of local sourcing is awesome. Perhaps we should start using the word local-saurus. Quick tidbit: We love being and eating and buying local. We love dinosaurs. We prize locality. We prize dinosaurs. Can we start calling ourselves local-sauruses? local-sauri? The Mary Louise brownie, the most Austin brownie not actually containing... stuff, was $5.50. That is absolutely, absolutely, outrageous. Heck, if you are so progressive and willing to make the world a better place by shopping local, what do you think about taking that $5.50 you spend a day on a brownie, saving that money over 2 years, taking your ~$4000, buying $500 of Betty Crocker brownie mix, hiring 10 laborers for 1 day for $200 to bake the brownies, and spending $3300 to fly to Africa to feed the Africans with American-local brownies? Anyway... lots of local sourcing here. And... 7AM-12AM for a LOCAL grocery store? You got a competition on your hands, Wheatsville. I miss Royal Blue Grocery with a passion, just like I miss Austin =(. I used to hit up RBG after working out at my friend's crib to grab a good pop or one of jeni's spendid ice creams, it was a must to cool down. They have a lot of goodies that are local to Austin, along with beer and wine if you need something to sip on. You can also heat up any food you bought and enjoy it outside on one of their many tables. I used to sit on those chairs watching people as they passed by, I'm sort of a creep. It's just what I need now that I've moved to downtown proper. It's more like a Brooklyn bodega, but with a little more style, substance, and space. I don't really need an HEB for most of my shopping, I just need an item or two. I'm already walking by anyway, so it's an easy stop. Convenient little grocery and liquer store on the west side of downtown. Has the staples and a small area for eating.

So they serve hot sandwiches. Just tried the "Texas Hold 'Em" although it's rather small for the $6.50 and has panini bread, the roast beef, cheddar, peppers and onion combinations are awesome. It also comes with a spicy side sauce that is a perfect addition. Tasty. Also a great, if not a little pricey, place to get grocery items if you're local or visiting in town like me. Beats the heck out of tooling down to Whole Foods. Also, this location is much larger than the one near Congress Avenue and worth the short walk. "What there's a free wine tasting? Wait, you're having a grand opening party a little later? I'm going to camp out here for a while." These were my thoughts last week as I popped in hoping to snag an individual can of Sofia, but alas there were none available at the time so I had to make due with the most amazing goat cheese paired with Austin Slow Burn habanero jam and light, Portugese wine (all complimentary of course). Poor, pitiful me. This location still had the cute snack-em's at the front like the original Royal Blue (I'm a notorious addict of those 25-cent Reese's and often buy the Nutella individuals as cute gifts for friends), but this location had a little more... And not just space. For one, the wine list was prominent, the glass prices excellent, the pricing actually beat Wiggy's on a particular Toro I like, and the descriptions of the wine are spot on. Maybe it's because I share the same tastes as the owner? Maybe I know that because I talked his ear off after conning a friend in buying said wine and drinking the bottle on premise in their awesome outdoor seating? (Please be advised cute New Zealander mechanic at Mellow Johnny's I am totally stalking you from here now). (Not really). (But really). Turns out, the guy (owner) likes to special order, is completely okay with talking to little wine-nerds like me, seems to really love his staff and clientele, and if you spy some Happy Hippo's in the store - he did that for me! I still have plenty of reasons to go in should they not arrive as the store is already a well-lit, open, and slightly hilarious gamut of random things I love from vino to those delicious Gilles Swedish cookies I enjoyed in England to fine and organic treats to... dear god is there anything I like that this store doesn't have? read more

I love this little mart! It's got the best of both worlds from reg stuff you would find at HEB to the gourmet stuff that you'd never think a small grocer would carry.
