I blame myself. I know this store is staffed by morons, yet I continue to give them more chances. I'm an enabler. I wanted to get a 12 piece mixed chicken meal for a fishing trip that was leaving the dock at 6:00 am. In the back of my mind I'm thinking about what a bunch of screw ups these people are, so I get to the store at a few minutes after 4:00 am. They had three breasts, five thighs, a load of legs and tenders, and no wings in the case. I put my order in for the 12 piece mixed, knowing it will be three pieces of each part, but they can substitute tenders for wings. I even thought about not paying immediately in case they start screwing up. But, I paid, picked up the bag of chicken and went out to my car. Something told me to check my order and, sure enough, it was completely f***'d up! I received one breast, three thighs and eight legs. I immediately went back in and spoke with the cashier, who said she would have someone take care of it. I returned to the chicken case and an employee approached and asked what they could give me to "make things right". I said if they would give me what I paid for, it would be great. But because they didn't have wings, I told them to give me two breasts (so I would then have the three I paid for) and three tenders (to take the place of the wings). I also said if they wanted to take back five of the legs (because they gave me eight) I didn't care. He said they couldn't take any food back that had left the store, so I should just keep them. I got my bag of chicken and left. I had already spent too much time trying to get a simple chicken order filled and had to leave to catch a boat. Sooooo, guess what? The shit-for-brains chicken slinger had taken the thighs out of the bag along with five legs. The legs he left were, and I'm not kidding, shriveled up and as long as a middle finger, which seems appropriate considering my experience. At almost $26, I guess it's asking too much to get the 12 piece mixed bag of chicken I paid for. At this point, I'm assuming that this SOB was doing all of this on purpose because I can't let myself believe that he was too stupid to put together a simple order. He did, however, manage to count to 12, so there's a light at the end of the tunnel for this genius. If you're in the area, avoid this RoFo at all costs! Drive three miles north on Rt 3 and patronize the RoFo at Rt 3 and 175. It's cleaner and the staff seems to be more on the ball. read more

Pros: - Great fried chicken, especially when it's freshly made! - Decent selection of beverages and pre-packaged snacks. - Reasonable gas prices. Cons: - The chicken is not always fresh, which is highly disappointing. - Very poor selection of other "deli" items, like sandwiches, hot/prepared snacks, etc. - Gas pumps not always functioning. - Frequent trash overflow outside near pumps. - Very unfriendly staff, for most of our interactions. On the last visit, the doors were locked and police cars were on the scene (lights off). We never got the full story, but there was a group of cyclists that were denied entry, and only two people working inside. It wouldn't have been that terrible, but the RoFo up the street also had their deli closed because only ONE person was working that night. Thank goodness there's a Wawa nearby and a Sheetz on the way. It's been a year since I've been back in my hometown, Baltimore, and I see that a lot has changed... some things for the better and others... well, not so much! I've been feening like a Crackhead for some Rofo -- Royal Farms Chicken so on our drive out of town we stopped at a fairly new RoFo on Crain Hwy. I gassed the van up and we headed inside. Nothing's changed with the order screen so placing my order for my chicken was rudimentary. After ordering my chicken, I walked around the store looking for some snacks for the ride back to Tampa and of course the selection of drinks and eats was what you'd expect from a convenience store... BUT... that's where it all ends! When did they replace the cashiers with computers, kind of in the theme of self checkout aisles at Walmart. I don't know who thought it was a good idea but... IT WASN'T! At least Walmart added the self checkouts in addition to the cashiers (for what it's worth) but when you have 3 self checkouts and 2 of them are broken and only one register for one cashier and 12 people in line... that's bad math all day. The wait was brutal and I nearly forgot the ice to go in the cooler for my crabs I was bringing back to Tampa with me. Not cool, Rofo... I was happy to get my chicken but the checkout experience was Booty... No easier way to turn 4 stars into 2 that having bad service. Do better! read more

Every time that I try to get gas and my morning soda before work here, I am always super disappointed. In the past 3 years, I think I have been 3 times on a weekend morning before 6am. I work really early. I would rather pay more and go to Sunoco or Exxon, because I can get what I need(gas and soda) and be rung up and out the door in less than 2 minutes. What I find when I go to Royal Farms(Gambrills) is an establishment that is notoriously under staffed for the volume of goods/service they offer and the volume of customers they have. The past 2 visits they were long lines and upset customers yelling at the poor cashier that they were out of coffee. This week I went to go inside and the guy said they were closed!? Need a better COVID-19 strategy. Even though they mandate masks, at times guests will be only wearing the bottom part of their mask and even though there's supposed to be a 6 feet curtesy distancing, they don't practice a capacity maximum which can make it difficult to maintain distance. Don't think I can ever come back unless they make some serious changes.. the payment system for this place is seriously inefficient and can only imagine it puts workers and people more at risk. Best fried chicken. I have to limit my fried food intake as I get older, but when the craving hits me, one of my new favorite places is Royal Farms. Yes, they are gas and convenience stations but don't judge by the book cover. The chicken is very tasty with a shall I say uniquely flavored coating. Their are also additional food items but I usually order a box of chicken (× or so pieces) with wedge fries. The wedge fries take me back to my college days in Hampton, VA (for those of you who remember the old Easy Go convenience store from back in the day). This place is a joke. Their pumps have been inoperable for 3 weeks. The screen at the pump asked for a pin then locks you out. You have to go into the store estimate the price and pay at the kiosk. So if you estimate $50 and pump $45 it initially charges your card then reimburses you. I asked the clerk who is a very nice guy what was going on. He said he has been trying to tell the GM of the issue but they just assume the customers are stupid and don't know how to use a credit card at the pump. I have noticed several people getting frustrated at the pump but it's not on me to explain it. This store is poorly managed unfriendly but they do have the best coffee. read more

On June 7 at 10:30 pm, I stopped by this gas station to spend over $70 in gas. Decided to enter the store to pick up some candy. I understand masks are no longer mandated; however, we are all still very much damaged by the effects of COVID - my family has lost a loved one. Monday - Looking at bank account, another charge for $34.00 on my account from Royal Farms. Called Bank- again. They will handle. I know a lot of people probably brag about their Mom's cooking skills but in my case it is less that and more factual. There are very few, outside of maybe professional chefs who could outcook my Mom. With that said, fried chicken was one of her specialties and I think, even now, one of its biggest attractions is how simple the recipe is. No need for beer or egg batter, or insane amounts of salt and spices...but I digress, as this isn't about my Mom's cooking (for which she really should write a book). Anyway, this isn't, or wasn't something I was familiar with growing up- gas stations that served actual cooked food. I was used to mostly nuts and candies in the gas stations I frequented in NY; but when I moved south to Va, I noticed that certain gas stations, chains usually, would have fried chicken and a few other items on their menu. When I moved to MD back in 2000, Royal Farms was mostly about gas and sandwiches- good sandwiches, but nothing to go out of your way to get (although they were a good deal better than Subway, but pretty much every place is, right). My wife came home a couple of months ago with a story told to her by a friend about Royal Farms chicken. Having experience with this sort of thing I was able to convince her their might be some truth to it- and boy there sure is. When it comes to fast food fried chicken, a lot of people will name KFC, Popeye's or Bojangle's, all of which I like but as is usually the case, you only get it when you get a hankering for it. Now, I used to eat fried chicken pretty regularly as a kid, at least once or twice a week because it was cheaper than beef back then. I never appreciated how good I had it til I had my first piece of fried chicken that my Mom didn't make- talk about culture shock! Greasy, salty - not very good (unless you'd been drinking after which, pretty much everything is good) but you get accustomed to something if you eat enough of it and I was too far away to run home every time I wanted it. Which didn't stop me from requesting it each time I did go home- made Dad happy as he loves it as much as I do. My wife learned my Mom's way so I got it whenever she felt like doing it but lets face it, its messy and a lot of work and with people's schedules being so busy, you rarely feel like tackling a bird after tackling dummies all day. So, we went to this Royal Farms to see if it lives up to the hype and it does. It really does. As with anything else, it can be really great or just OK and I think that depends on who is back there prepping and cooking the chicken, but even at its least, it was better than KFC or Popeye's. Bojangle's is actually better than the previous two, but its further away and...Royal Farms chicken is better. Now, you really only can get the chicken; if you want to make it a meal, you'll be better off going to one of the others that offer sides to go with the chicken because at Royal Farms the chicken is all you can get. Oh, they do have fried potatoes, but those are as awful as the chicken is good, which is a little confusing but that's about the size of it. Really, really good fried chicken, the fried potato wedges are just awful; they'd be better if they fried the potatoes in the same oil as the chicken but they don't as far as I can tell, so that's that. Get the chicken. One last thing- it is take out ONLY; nowhere to sit and eat. read more

I love this little store and been getting my car washed there since they opened but the last 3 washes , not so much . My car ( black Dodge Charger) has been coming out with bubbles and streaks and some kind of strange residue and odor . I spoke w/ Andrew, the manager , who was so nice and helpful . He explained they did some work on the machine and maybe that's the issue . He walked outside and saw my issue . He apologized and returned my $ and gave me another free wash . I give this particular Royal farms 3 stars. Only because of the chicken. If I had a good experience otherwise it would be a 4 or 5 star. For a "gas station" they have incredible fried chicken. Its been rated as one of the best places for fast food chicken and I totally agree. I stopped by here after a concert. Was looking to eat some place else, but the other place just closed by the time I got there. Driving home looking for another place to eat, I saw this and thought hey they have great fried chicken so I stopped. I ordered at the kiosk as you normally do. I went and paid, as you normally do. This was about 10:15 at night, so it was not busy. they had plenty of chicken. I ordered I believe 2 chicken breasts and two biscuits. I took my receipt up there and showed it to them. They asked me if I was order number XX and I said no, shows them my receipt and told them I Was order number XY. they again asked me if I was order number XX and again I said no, I was XY, this went on two or three more times, they looked at me with a confused look on their face. Once I think I got the order number correct with them. I realized I left something in my car that I wanted to bring in, a winning lotto ticket. I went out, got it, they stopped cashing tickets at 10pm, which oops I did not know. Then I went back to the food counter and my order was ready and the chicken was good as it usually is. Chicken I would give a 4. Service a 1. So average higher because the chicken was that good, I give it a 3. But I doubt if I am in the area not sure I will stop at this Royal Farms again. read more

I rounded up because they always have a ton of gas pumps which is nice, I've never had to wait and their chicken and fries are awesome, which is mainly what I would come here for. Today was the first time I tried their breakfast and I was pretty disappointed. I got an bacon egg and cheese bagel and two hash browns. The hash browns didn't seem to be cooked all the way and the bagel was almost miniature sized. I felt like I was eating one of those tiny sandwiches you see at fancy cocktails it was that small. The low ratings here are well deserved. Ordered an 8 piece chicken and large fries. I was told there was not enough fries for a large fries order. I was given the option to wait 8-9 minutes or get a refund or get mashed potatoes. I chose the mashed potatoes. In the meantime someone had come in after me and ordered only a large fries and was given the order from what was left in the case. When I asked, they said "these are for the next order" with no reason given why an order placed five minute after mine was given precedence. Maybe Latinos are not welcome here? Or I just wasn't "white" enough to get my order placed first filled first. Six minutes later I'm still watching the guy behind the counter try to squeeze mashed potatoes from a paper cup into a bowl. I called the manager "Charles" who would not give a last name (not surprisingly) and all he said was yes it was odd and "ok." No offer to fix anything. Of course I received no response from the phone call. I went on the web site and sent a complaint. No response. I followed up the e-mail several times without getting a response. This time I noticed before I bought the gas that the discount did not show up on the pump. So I went back in to the store and told them about it. They said they could give me a# to call. Ordered the chicken. Bit into it, was partially green! Yes green! Brought it back in, showed the lady, got a refund. Gross. The lady was not nice at all. I gotta stop eating out and stick to making my own food 100% of the time. Worst part the lady was training someone and she couldn't even do it right. As I was watching her fuss, I noticed she was handling the food without gloves and as she reached in to place the chicken in the case, the front part of her shirt and sleeve dragged across all of the chicken and fries. Not sure why the bad reviews? This place is totally fine. Gas prices are good. Car wash is good except you have to watch your antenna, ask me how I know! LOL If you're blonde, LOWER YOUR ANTENNA prior to going into the car wash. Ok on to the fried chicken. Only one other place in Crofton has fried chicken this good and it's the sub shop at 424 and 450. Might even be better but this fried chicken is outstanding. I try not to eat it often but every once in awhile have to stop by for one chicken thigh. Yum! Everything else here is great too. They also have those big wedge french fries. Plus whatever other quick things you want like 7-11 has. Bathrooms are clean too.
