I hadn't had my hair cut in two years. My hair is super long and my ends were completely dead. Erica was amazing. I was concerned about losing length because I want to continue growing my hair out. She cut only what absolutely needed to be cut, layered and styled it beautifully. She was so personable and friendly. The cost was also great. Goodness! If my memory serves me correctly, I was out one night about 8 years ago at a local "spot" and noticed a gal who was rocking this short haircut that I absolutely LOVED. I had to ask her where she went. My girlfriend nudged me and I finally blurted out "Where do you get your hair cut?" She told me Sandy at Royal Hair Studio which was inside of the Sports and Health Center at the time was awesome and she's received so many compliments and thanked me for mine to her. I just had to go check her out. I finally mustered up the confidence to just go. I was nervous as my hair was medium length and I really wanted to go short but was so self conscious. Let me tell you that Sandy picked up on this, spun me around in her chair and told me to love myself. A moment I will never forget. Now they are located over off of Cowan Blvd in a very nice studio/salon and I'm so grateful to see them continue throughout the years. I've never met a more wonderful family who runs this place. They are all wonderful people. Her Mother Heshy takes care of my Mother whose hair is all over the place while she has been recovering from Breast Cancer. Heshy is that rare stylist who can really *sculpt* hair. I don't even have to bring her a picture of the haircut I want. It's the difference between the chef who knows what beef wellington is but still needs a recipe to make sure it turns out alright, and the chef who can execute a perfect beef wellington from memory every time. Oh, and to take the metaphor a step further: she's the chef who can also identify when you're not going to like the beef wellington, can explain exactly why you won't like it, and suggest something much better in its place. In addition to being an exceptional stylist, she's a wise woman and a warm, engaging conversationalist. I've been going to her for about five years. Before this, I'd see a stylist maybe two or three times before I'd realize they weren't very consistent. She can look at my hair, ask me how many weeks it's been since it was last cut, and know exactly what to do to trim it back to the way it was before. (Any other time I let a stylist do that - less experienced stylists, anyway - I ended up with a haircut that may not have been bad, but didn't really look like the last haircut they gave me.) Today, she gave me a fantastic razor cut "lob" that took the weight and heft out of my thick hair. Her assistant Ana did beautiful work with the blow dry (Ana also waxed my brows and did a very nice job shaping them up). Highly recommended! read more

Magical! My daughters and I have been looking for a personal hairdresser for four years. Let me preface, we have lived in California for twenty years and had our private stylist. So moving to Fredericksburg was a shock to us. We tried every where with one bad cut and color after another! And then, suddenly, last night this salon that has been in business longer than we have been here appeared in our google search. I am a speaker, my daughters are movie directors and scientists and we have specific needs and wants with our styles. From the minute we sat in the chair, Saundra was professional and took the time to understand our personalities and our hopes. One of us was having our hair washed while the other was being cut and styled! Each one of us walked out with a spring in our step and a joy in our hearts! We have found our stylist home!!! It was a perfect afternoon at the salon--high end and hometown combined in one. We felt like we were with family. I can not recommend the salon with higher marks but if I could 10 stars is warranted. I just walked in my door and my son exclaimed, "Mom! You look like you again!" Thank you Sandra! I'll see you in a few weeks. I'm overjoyed! read more

This review is more about the service and professional behavior of the employees than the quality of hair service. I came here in 2009 (I think they had just opened recently) because I needed a salon to do my hair for my wedding. I know that when you toss the word "wedding" into anything, prices automatically go way up, but I thought that going to a new, family owned salon would avoid some of the more corporate costs that get attached to weddings. For my wedding, I wanted to go to the salon to do a hair trial (to make sure I liked what they would do before I committed on the actual wedding day). I went there, and I did not ask for anything fancy. I didn't want curls or some extravagant up-do. I wanted it fairly simple, which they delivered in that aspect. The hair trial literally took all of maybe 20 minutes. I basically got this up-do where they had to tease my hair a bit and then pull it back and use hair pins to make it stay. No curls, just teased, pinned, and sprayed. REALLY simple. How much did it cost me for my TRIAL? $50!!! I felt that was a little steep, but whatever, I didn't have time to go try 10 different salons and I liked the style they did. I asked them on the day of my trial how much my hair would cost the day of the wedding, figuring that it would be a little more since they'd be taking a little more time and paying a lot more attention to detail. The lady told me it would be $75. I accepted that as ok because I wanted to just have my hair salon chosen and be done. Day of the wedding comes, and my bridesmaids and I had our appointment set for early in the morning as the wedding was going to start somewhere around 1 or 2, and we had to be at the venue by about noon. I think there were about 6 of us (myself included), so we needed to make sure there was enough time to get us all in. seeing as there were only maybe 2 stylists. Whatever time we had our appointments set to, we got there on time, if not at least 15 minutes earlier than we were expected. When we get there, only one lady was there at the time (I guess the owner-- not any of the stylists that were going to be doing our hair). The stylists who were doing our hair were about 30 MINUTES LATE! NOT a good start and for a bride on her wedding day to have to deal with people being THAT late when we were already on a tight schedule was unnerving. When the two stylists finally DID get there, one of them had the audacity to ask if I cared if she ran to the bank really quick. WHAT?!??? You are late and then you want to run an errand??? I don't know where the bank was, but that is besides the point. At this point, I am already beyond annoyed at these people and just want to get my hair done and go. I'm worried now that we are going to be late. When my hair finally gets done, the time is getting close and some of my bridesmaids hair isn't done yet, but I HAD to leave to get to the venue as I still had things I needed to drop off (table decor, favors, etc.). Since I had to leave, I left my debit card with my sister who was still getting hair or makeup done, and told her to just pay for mine and give me my card later. Later, sometime either right before the wedding or maybe when I was getting changed to leave, I got my card back from my sister and asked how much it cost. My sister told me it cost $100!!!! Not including tip! I think I had told her to leave a $20 tip on what I thought was going to be a $75 bill. Then she tells me they charged $100 after they had told me at my trial that it would be $75. $100 for a hairdo that took no more than 15-20 minutes to do. This was probably the thing that pushed me right over the edge with this place and I said I'd never go back. I can't believe the unprofessionalism that they exhibited, especially for a WEDDING party that was going to be dropping quite a bit of money into their business. I will never go back to this salon, and I hope that they have since become more professional. read more

For my friend's wedding Sandra and her sister Erica were contracted through Royal Hair Studio (RHS) on Cowan Boulevard. The sisters arrived on time, large coffees in hand. During the time that the bridesmaids were helping the sisters set up in the front room, Erica misplaced her coffee and tried to blame us for taking her coffee and doing something with it. They prepped each person, six all told, while regaling us with stories of clients that they had seen and places they had travelled. It was enjoyable until the rapid decline of service. Erica seemed incapable of doing the hairstyle she was asked to do, a simple waterfall braid with curls, and instead did an unflattering vintage style that was finished too late to be able change it. Both women were also incredibly rough with all six women getting their hair done. During the time that they were at the home the sisters, particularly Erica, tried to give the bride unsolicited religious advice despite being told several times that she was not religious, as well as telling her that she should be a subservient wife and please her husband whether she likes it or not. The sisters also heavily judged the bridesmaids while we talking with each other and the bride about a personal matter involving a past incident that they had no business commenting on or forming an opinion. Around two weeks after the wedding, the bride's mother was informed by a customer (one whom had actually recommended RHS to the mother) that the owner of RHS (who is coincidentally the mother of Erica and Sandra) had been poorly talking about the wedding party to said customer. It was claimed that we did not feed them or give them water, or say thank you and tip them. Not only did we buy doughnuts and a cheese plate that they partook in, but we fed them pasta before they left and went to another client, and got them everything that they asked for. Coming to someone's house and expecting the clients to wait on them hand and foot is unacceptable and inappropriate behavior. As for the thank you and the tip, the bride was going to send them a personal thank you with a tip inside until it came to light that the people of RHS were gossiping about clients to other customers. RHS had already gotten enough money from the bride, charging $1500 for poor services. Part of the services were paid for ($800) upfront, and the remaining money was paid afterward while the bride's mother was frazzled with setting up the ceremony and unable to discuss why the price was so high. No list of services was provided to give any idea how much the total charges would be, blindsiding the clients with the cost when they had no other choice but to pay as services was already rendered. I would highly recommend finding another salon for wedding services, as if you do not act appropriately in their eyes, you will be gossiped about to any customer that will listen and be left with unsatisfactory results. If I could give this company half a star I would, as they do not deserve a full star. read more

I and wife had a good stylist however the whole thing soured on something as simple as taking a payment upon paying the stylist inadvertently double charged the debit card presented didn't know that till later paid with a different card rest cash so after calling their manager about mistake they said call debit card company to fix it tried that not successful so approach the owner who flat said no I'm not giving u money back unless had proof which I then tried to show them pictures off of iPhone the documentation told them we have to take action to get our money back on a refund so my point is they might know how to do hair nice but they don't know how to handle simple transactions upon checking out and if they make a mistake they play hardball on giving u ur money due back the owner was not nice to me at all on their mistake right so we are in process of informing the city manager yes we went to the top of city manager and we are also contacting better business bureau and fredericksburg chamber of commerce in meantime folks find another place to get your hair done is my best advice read more

I can not speak highly enough about this salon and the wonderful ladies running the place. The first time I came to the salon was on a whim, frustrated by my hair and in need of a change. I met Erica who immediately greeted me and got me seated for a color change and hair cut. She was wonderful. Very laid back and friendly atmosphere. Accommodating to say the least. If my hair had not turned out perfect ( which it did ) I still would have gone back to this location because of the customer service. I will be a customer here as long as they are in business. I highly recommend their services. My hair has never looked better and I took my mother here recently and her pictures are posted on this site. Erica is a miracle worker. My first (& only!) experience at Royal was not a good one. I was given a Saturday appt & there was a wedding party who had their hair & makeup done at the same time. Why did they make my appt if they knew they would be really busy? For the most part I was completely ignored. The lady left the highlight bleach on too long & I ended up with platinum blonde hair. Worst salon ever!!!! They ruined my daughters hair!! My daughter had long beautiful hair to her waist but after swimming her curly hair became horribly tangled my daughter was taken to the salon to have her hair untangled and to have a trim. They cut the tangle out! Without my permission they cut her hair about five inches long underneath. A huge chunk on one side of her head and left the top midway down her back. I am beyond disgusted!!!! They didn't even cut the top even. Every time I comb my daughter's hair now I feel a little sick and furiously angry. I have never cut more than two inches off of her gorgeous hair and now it's ruined! My daughter was so upset she cried, (and so did I) I can't even brush it now without swearing how much I loathe this $%#%%$ salon. Worst damn experience ever!!! Totally ruined my daughters hair!! No apologies, no explanation whatsoever NOTHING!! She is 9 and had no more than a total of maybe 3 inches cut off since birth, just an occasional trim to keep it healthy. To give you an idea of how long it "WAS", she stands 4'5" tall and her hair was to the bottom of her a$$! As much a pain as it was to take care of at times her mother and I took time to treat it properly and keep it healthy.....it was beautiful!! I never wanted to cut her hair and one day, about a year ago, my daughter asked me about a picture of a child undergoing Chemotherapy. After explaining to her how strong they were for undergoing such treatment and why they lose their hair, on her own accord, she lit up and said,"I know what I'd like to do! I want my hair to go past my butt so I can cut it and donate it to Locks of Love". Cool right!? Right! Which would have still kept her hair at a length that she and 'we' (her parents) thought was good...Why is this relevant? Read on.... ...And now back to the slam. Royal hair totally fudged it!! Forget about how long it took, the care, and what our daughter was trying to do. Let's get to the nitty gritty: My daughter had been swimming the day before and her hair was horribly tangled (yes, it was put in a braid to minimize tangling) It had worked loose and her hair became horribly tangled. I worked on it the night prior to this fiasco. I had 3/4 of her hair untangled but it was late and so I let her go to bed. The next day while at work I instructed the family member who was watching her to take her to the salon and said,"When they work the tangle out, I'd like it trimmed (1/2") then washed and have a conditioning/nourishing treatment done. Let her enjoy the experience. AND IF THEY CAN'T OR IF THEY DON'T HAVE TIME IT'S OK, I WILL TAKE CARE OF IT WHEN I GET HOME and I'll just take her later for the trim and treatment". Not only did they NOT spend time trying to get her hair untangled (5 min MAYBE!) They cut the tangle out from the base!! OVER 14"!!! ARE YOU SH*TING ME?????REALLY? A HUGE portion was taken out of one side and the length left on the other. No phone call, no attempt to somewhat make it look half decent, NOTHING NOTHING!! Not even a G**D*MNED APOLOGY!!! It's not that her hair won't grow back, I get that. "it's just hair", I get that too. It's more the principle of the matter and the lack of professionalism that disgusts me the most besides the emotional break down it caused my daughter. ERIKA/ERICA how ever you spell your name YOU SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED IN A STUDIO AGAIN. I WOULDN'T EVEN TRUST THIS PLACE TO STYLE ANYTHING MUCH LESS SHAVE SOMEONE'S HEAD GOING INTO THE MILITARY!! AND FORGET PET GROOMING! And if not for time constraints, I'd sue just on the principle of the matter and make them pay to have a wig made....regardless There is nothing "ROYAL" about this salon!
