I think Royal Maroon is one of if not the best Caribbean carryout in Baltimore! I normally get the curry chicken, dark meat. I like white meat fried chicken but the dark meat seems to be the juiciest when its curry! They always seem to give you a nice portion. Sometimes I can't wait to get home so I taste it in the car! My family and I frequent this restaurant, but I admit it had been awhile. My mom and grandma had just flown in from Jamaica and were still feeling Caribbean, so we decided to make our way to royal maroon. My grandfather had the stewed beef, my aunt had the curry shrimp and beef, my grandmother and I had the curry chicken and my mom had the jerk chicken. Of course we got a few orders of coco bread to top it off. When I arrived, I called the number to let them know I was at the window to pick up. Shortly after a woman came to the window and delivered our grocery bags of food. She was very pleasant and gave me very good service. When we arrived home, our food was still piping hot. Not only was it piping hot, the order was 100% correct. My family and I were extremely quiet. We all enjoyed our food immensely. All of the food was amazing. I will continue to go back and have even put my dad onto this place as one of my favorite spots. Again, no pictures due to greed. I almost didn't go in because of the somewhat sketchy location... there's no obvious sign outside and sometimes, there are people hanging around our front, but honey! I was craving Jerk chicken. Baltimore jerk chicken .... I would have settled for brown stewed chicken if the place was out of Jerk chicken. Saturday night they had both. I asked to sample the Jerk sauce, the cook was nice enough to let me taste a small piece of Jerk chicken instead. Man, it was so salty. I opted for brown stewed chicken (without a sample). I ordered a large brown stewed chicken, cocoa bread and 2 chicken patties. The chicken patties were delicious. The brown stewed chicken smelled like BBQ sauce and Jerk chicken the minute I closed the door in my car. My mother never had Jerk or Brown stewed chicken. I let her sample everything she thought the chicken was BBQ chicken with a spicy kick. Brown chicken shouldn't taste like BBQ chicken at all!!! Ever!!! Because the chicken and sauce was so salty( which meant the rice and cabbage was salty as well) I put everything over a bed of mixed greens hoping to cut the salt a little. It helped! After reading the reviews I decided to try Royal Maroon. I got a small Oxtail and a small Jerk Chicken. The Oxtails were good, could have been a pinch more tender but good. The gravy was exceptional. The jerk Chicken on the other hand was dry. The curry gravy was tasty though. I would return to get more Oxtails. read more

The first time I tried Royal's I got a small curry chx plate. It was really good. The customer service was a little off. The lady seem to have a slight attitude. Nothing major though. We also went fairly close to their closing time too. They were out of curry goat and oxtails. So I went with curry chx instead. This time I got to try the curry goat. Very good with a little kick. I was introduced to this restaurant I believe in 2018. The food is good, portions are reasonable most times but they slip often since 2019. I order oxtail most of the time, they use to be sizable and meaty now they are small, boney. I just picked up an order last night not many oxtails with meat and 2 large bones which appeared to be oxtails under the rice and gravy but were not. When I called about the changes a few months ago I was advised that this is the new norm. I called because that time I received a very small portion of cabbage, tons of peas & rice 6 tiny pieces of oxtail for a large order. I think the price is right but I would prefer to get some meaty oxtails and consistency. That's one of the problems with many restaurants they aren't consistent, sometimes good, sometimes not. I have been eating oxtails for many years and I prepare them myself so I know. I have also have had them internationally so I know what to expect. read more

I went here because all the reviews said that it was delicious. I decided to give it a try because I'm trying to find a good Caribbean spot since I can't have my moms cooking. Cool. I went with a friend, she ordered the curry goat with rice and peas. I ordered the jerk chicken with rice and peas. Sighs. I wish I could get my money back just typing this. It was terrible. From the food to the customer service, everything about this family owned eatery is A1. The jerk chicken is unlike anything I've had in Baltimore--different but delicious. They give you the option of putting curry sauce on your rice and peas-- I opted in, and it gave it even more flavor. The people that work here are always friendly, which can be rare in West Indian restaurants. I hope they continue to remain consistent because I would hate to have to come back and change my review, lol. read more
