This is such an underrated library. I like it better now that there's a front entrance, there used to be only the entrance in the rear for ever. Ramp that they put in last year was so much nicer in the front and now you can access it from front or rear of the building. I know they did some updates to the exterior of the building, towards the top of it, but it looks the same. I guess it doesn't matter, it's more important what's inside. I have a large size area for kids. They have a very small collection of videos to the right. The librarians or staff there are very helpful and there's usually 2 to 3 working a day. They have a small theater left of the desks, they have a lot of children's shows and events there. They have a lot of quiet areas sprinkled throughout the library. I don't come here as often as I should, but they do have a large selection of books. At least I have my library card now. I didn't have it for the first few years I lived here. I will come here more often in the summer time, since it's not a far walk for me. Make sure to support your local library and as my mother would say, it's cheaper to borrow a book than to by it, especially if you don't know if you will even like it.

Lovely library visit yesterday; reference librarian was very helpful answering my questions. Impressed to see so many folks reading and studying inside on a beautiful, sunny Saturday!

This library is well stocked.  The librarians here are professional and extremely good at their work.  The first floor features a full selection of books, periodicals, tapes and research books.  Of course, if there is something you are looking for that is not there then a simple request through MelCat will fix that.                 There is some extraordinary art in the place.  On the first floor there is a large carved sculpture on the wall featuring the work of several wood carvers.  It is all about Michigan and the impressions of Michigan that the carvers had.  My favorite one is the old fort.                 There are other paintings and items around the library that are interesting to look at.                 An amazing addition to the library is in the lower level.  Along the top of the upper most shelf of books there are large tile artworks.  They had been created by artists and children helped to assemble them.  The themes are reading and  history and learning.  The tiles and the parts that make them up are really something to see.  I highly recommend it.  They are not in plain sight so I suggest asking a librarian to show them to you.  Once you see the first one you can't miss the rest.  They just roll right along into each other - one from the other to the other.                 Parking is available but you might have to hoof it or roll for a couple of blocks.  Even in inclement weather it's a nice way to get there anyway!

Love the library but wish I could take out more than 8 on hoopla. Can't even watch a full season of anything.

But then when I brought the books in and was talking to him about them, he turned from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde. Couldn't understand it. Just rude and snotty and short. I guess there's other bookstores open. I'll go to those. Incredibly disappointed. A real tool.

If that doesn't deter you then coming here, as a book lover, researcher, or anyone involved in intellectual or literate pursuits, is one of the best decisions you could possibly make. This is a real bookshop. It's a relic from what you would have had easy access to in the 20th century and prior and that (sadly for our species) barely exists any longer. You're more likely to walk out with a first edition of some esoteric and forgotten knowledge than whatever you planned on finding when you walked in. You could spend hours just glancing through one row of shelves and still not even catch half of it. The books here are high quality, ranging from contemporary titles to 19th century (and probably beyond) originals. There's a bit of everything, from history and archaeology, to religion and spirituality, to music and cars, to novels and poetry, to travel and hobbies, to social matters and Jewish interests. If you like books, knowledge, or anything that could be found in a written text, you'll find it here. Apparently people dislike the owner. I have no idea why. He's brief, witty, and competent. Are people so accustomed to the fake smiles and creepy stalking you'd get at a Barnes & Noble that they've actually convinced themselves that this is real life? Or even desirable in any way? You won't find a retail worker pretending to like you in hopes of keeping a job or getting a tip here. Just a real man with a real mission and amenity. It is a non-profit organization, always looking for a helping hand. They were closed the other day when I visited. This location is run solely by volunteers, and had no signs with hours of operation. Ah, but during my visit, a couple of the volunteers happened to stop by and gave me information about the organization. I took a brief walk around the well manicured grounds and found that they have a farm museum, carriage house, root cellar, smoke house, summer kitchen, school house and of course, the Wisner Mansion. While I was there, I shot a picture of the historical marker which is prominently displayed close to the roadway. Their next big event is an Ice Cream Social on 26 JUL 2014 and it promises to be a great time. Hours of operation are 11am - 4pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, library included. Group tours are scheduled in advance. I see it's been a little slow here in updating info, so contact Sara at 248-338-6732 or office@ocphs.org with any questions or to RSVP. Web site: www.ocphs.org.
