We got sick, and paid almost $60 for 2 bad tasting Phad Thais. One beef Phad Thai comes out to $24 (NOT including tax+ credit surcharge + tip) apparently they switched their menu to anything with beef add $4. They don't tell you that when you order, they just charge you. And on top of it, the meat wasn't fresh, left us both sick all night, and both meals just tasted overwhelmingly like fish sauce and, not fresh meat, it was all I could taste was fish sauce and dried up chewy pieces of beef. My gf got house Phad Thai and it came with scraggly pieces of chicken barely a handful and 2 shrimp. For $20.00. Even if that's the going rate price which has exponentially gone up, the food should be held to a standard especially for that price, it was not. They had things in there, the chilli peppers I was biting into hurt my teeth. It was chewy meat, and they did not use fresh ingredients, at least the meat was far gone and it tasted terrible. Stayed up all night having stomach issues and racing to the restroom. I've tried this place several times and each time I'm disappointed with a stomach ache and not the best tasting, but I always say I'll give them another try bc their location is convenient, but that's it, last time I'm ever going there. Please do better. We are people, not just paying customers, we deserve safe food. read more

This place is fantastic! We asked a local what their favorite place was and it was on their list. We were glad that we came in! The fresh spring rolls with peanut sauce were a hit. It was a nice day sized portion for the price. I liked all of the fresh vegetables and that dipping sauce. The Tom Yum chicken wings were AMAZING!!!! Perfectly seasoned and crispy. This was one of our favorite things we ate all week long. If you like wings then definitely give them a try. The chicken larb was well seasoned. We ordered it 3 stars and it had some heat!!! It came with a side of romaine lettuce to scoop it up with. My entree of cashew chicken was ordered a 3.5 star and it tasted great! It had a bunch of vegetables that were cooked to perfection. The prices are fair and the food came quickly and hot and fresh. It doesn't have that old oil taste that some Thai places have. The dishes we ordered had enough sauce which was a big win for me. This was a great find! We were at the beach nearby all morning and hungry for lunch. I found Royal.thai from Google map, it was one of the closest restaurants from the beach we were at so we decided to check it out. It was a Thursday so we got to order their lunch special menu. We ordered the red curry w chicken and pad see eew with pork from the lunch menu. $13.99 each which was certainly a steal for Hawaii standard! We also ordered ala Carte sweet and sour chicken (I think it was $16) and fried egg rolls (I think $9). Hubby also ordered the Thai ice coffee. The food came out within minutes. The pad see eew had the "wok hey" flavor which added flavors to the dish. It was perfectly seasoned and the portion was good too. Lots of meat and veggies. Certainly the better pad see eew I had lately. The red curry was also very flavorful and not overly sweet, I could tell the flavor was pretty authentic and not too Americanized. The portion was also generous for lunch special! It came with a bowl of steam rice. Hubby's sweet and sour chicken came w bigger portion bc he ordered ala Carte, but it also.came w rice. Great flavor too! The fried egg rolls were piping hot and crispy. The filling was cabbage and carrots, pretty standard for egg rolls. We certainly had a great lunch and we were starving after being in the water, so we devoured everything! I certainly recommend this spot if you want good Thai food. Disappointing. I think they have a people coming in because there aren't better options. I skipped the appetizers because they are frozen and then fried. Pad ke mao made from the dried noodle not fresh rice noodle, not the proper wide noodles from sheets. Barely any Thai basil in the dish. Taste was a bland, far from the best I have ever had. Vegetables in the red curry were fine but actually coconut curry sauce was very small and so watered down in flavor. Accompanying rice in a bowl was like half a scoop. They use ground chicken breast for the larb which is good, but it was too heavy on the fish sauce and needed more lime and toasted rice powder, also absent was the fresh herbs like mint. They get away with it because the diners don't know what really good Thai food is. Definitely not five star. Price point is average. read more

We have been trying to eat at least once at all the available Thai Restaurants in the Kailua-Kona area. So we had to try this restaurant located in the Keahou Shopping center. The restaurant is a pretty good size with ample seating both inside and outside. The decor is typically Thai, setting the ambiance to its Thai roots. The service was very good. Prompt, courteous and friendly. They took the time to explain and didn't try to rush you out of the restaurant. It also looked like they were fully staffed. Which is a bit of a rare thing in Kona at this time. We ordered the Beef Pad Thai, the House Fried Rice, Chicken Satay, regular Crispy Wings and their Mango Sticky Rice. The Pad Thai was good, though the fried rice was plain. The chicken wings were also not as flavorful. The satay and mango sticky rice were ok. Nothing super outstanding. What we are finding is that like the others in Kona, the full Thai 4 taste is missing. Don't get me wrong, the food is not bad, but it's pretty watered down for American taste; which to me is a little disappointing. I would still recommend this place as the service and ambiance is pretty good. The food is ok. The menu is pretty extensive... so I'll try it again to see if any of the menu items are more Thai than catered to the western taste. read more

STEPH JUDGEMENT: Typical Thai, served with a smile. We here a little after lunch hour on a weekday; it was quite empty so there was no problem getting a table. We got our usual go-tos: Pad see ew with tofu, and yellow curry with tofu. It was good but can't say it knocked our socks off. Just what we were expecting, nothing more or less--OK. I always enjoy the food here at Royal Thai. They have a great selection of rice dishes, noodles, soups, and curries. The restaurant is often short handed so service can at times be slow, but the servers are pleasant. The decor is clearly influenced by Thailand, with figurines and paintings related to the restaurant's main fare. Spacing between tables is a tad crowded but nothing too bad. read more

The restaurant and staff were lovely. The food we ordered was terrible The shrimp fried rice was tasteless and worse, mushy! It was like rehydrated old rice that did not even resemble rice anymore. The Tom Yum soup was also flavorless if you can imagine that. They used that artificial lime juice and probably just fish sauce as the main components for the broth. Not tasty at all. I have learned to lower my expectations of food here in general for Kona but damn these are not complex dishes, you can see the workers are Thai. This is surprisingly good Thai food which is not something I'd expect at all. I was lazy so didn't want to go to another fancy restaurant so I ordered to go. The food took longer than expected but that's because they are very busy. The waitress also made some mistakes initially on my order but luckily she was able to run out to catch me in the car to fix the order. What makes a Thai restaurant good is how well they adjust the spiciness of the food without messing with the flavor of curry or basil sauce and I have to say they do a pretty good job with the exception of Tom Yum Soup which unfortunately doesn't have right balance of spiciness and sourness. Other than that the basil squid is delicious and so is the Thai curry prawn. Overall I have to say it's very good Thai food.
