This place is legit! Don't let the small storefront fool you. They are loaded to the gills with some of the best stuff around that you can't see at Total Wine or BevMo or most other local shops selling whiskey. The owner and associates are very happy to chat about anything whiskey related I picked up a bottle of Glenrothes Lustau Sherry aged (24 year) non-chill filtered Speyside single malt. At $299.99 it was a screaming deal for a 24 year age statement whiskey! Bottled at 56.7% ABV this sherry aged single malt is the real deal! The item itself is quite limited and each bottle is numbered to let you know how many were made that year. He only had one left and it had been long discontinued so I was very glad I got my hands on it. It seemed like the best value for the price among the rarer options he had available. I really, really appreciate the fact that he did not mark it up a penny (BevMo had it for $299.99 many years back) even though he totally could have. This tells me right off the bat he is an extremely straight-shooter kind of business owner who cares about longtime customer value and retention rather than trying to make a quick buck or drive "hype" up. David and company are always so pleasant and knowledgeable about everything in store plus there are many times I have gone in to find a vendor offering FREE sips of some selection and one-time discounts. On the regular I pick up beer out of their top notch cave(very cold & clean) and David has helped me choose the best liquor for different events thru the years; special Scotch for my late Mom's Wake, ideal Tequilas and he really really knows his Whiskey like no other. They organize tasting at a nearby Restaurant called Anejo which is fun to discover new poison (David has his own exclusive barrel reserve you can buy) and meet other local people. Love coming here every once in a while to look for craft beers and special sours and ciders. They have a cool beer cave in the back you can walk into and treasure hunt. Recently picked up some single cans from a brewery in Sac- the brewery had run out of this sour mid pouring my glass so I wasn't able to try it there. Glad I can get it in SJ. The owner, Dave, is just an fine gentleman that truly stocks a treasure trove of very fine spirits and wines, with very good pricing. His staff is top-notch and very helpful too. I was tasked to order 8 bottles of Dom Perignon for some clients and it all needed to be delivered the same day. Frantically, I started calling a few local places and Marisol was the only one who was extremely helpful and patient listening to what I was trying to accomplish. David took pictures of the bottles and texted them to me so I could see exactly what was in stock. I ended up coming down to the store so I could drop off hand written notes to go with each gift and Marisol was so kind to help me wrap them. You can go to BevMo or Total Wine and find a much better variety. Also, their prices seemed a little high in comparison to those stores. It really didn't feel overly special to me. Maybe this is a locals favorite, but I honestly wasn't impressed. Felt like a pretty typical liquor store to me, and while they do have few rare items, they are marked up the wazoo. read more

It has been a few years since I reviewed Royal Liquors, and while it is still a regular place for me, and some things are the same, some have changed. They still have one of the best beer selections in the Bay Area if you like the craft single bottles and cans. Their back cooler is a wonderland of options. I used to feel Royal Liquors' bourbon game was weak, but they have become one of the best around in terms of selection. They also have a monthly raffle where they give one ticket for every $20 spent and have a drawing for the privilege to buy a rare or allocated selection at regular retail price instead of the high secondary market price. Some of their whiskey selections are priced way above standard retail because they are allocated labels which fetch crazy prices. I saw a bottle of Pappy in here for $1800 once. Just last week they had a multi-bottle Weller collection for $1999. While I definitely will pay a premium for hard-to-find things that I like I don't go that big, and although part of me doesn't like this side of the bourbon trade, if you're going to play the sucker's game it is probably best to find a respectable seller like Royal Liquors to purchase from. There are so many scams out there. The reasons to come to Royal Liquors are the friendly, knowledgeable service and the great selection. Don't come here looking for the best price. For example, last week I bought a 750ml bottle of Weller Special Reserve here for $79. This week I was at another place and picked up the 1.75l bottle for $59. I'll keep coming back for the things I can't find other places. read more

Where were you hiding, Royal Liquors? One of my go-to shops for craft beer was closed so I came here & pleasantly surprised by their beer selections! There are a lot of options, and some are aged already which is like hitting a gold mine. Just found dogfish head / victory / stone, saison du buff, from June 2014. I'm assuming people around here aren't interested and patrons who come for the craft beer come across town like me :) The cashier showed us the beer cave/cooler which made us feel part of a secret club with exclusive beer access privileges. It's actually extra inventory they couldn't fit in the front, but still cool. They have occasional tastings but apparently it's too much work. I wish I can organize it for them! read more

Craft liquor central. And I mean it! They have a large selection of craft brews, ciders, and hard alcohols that you will be at first taken aback by. All you need to do is stop in but make sure you have a little bit of time to look around. The front of the shop seems small but there is a larger fridge in the back which is where all the beer snobs will take to. Some of our favorite crafts have been found here which are definitely not in the grocery store and not at your average liquor store.
