We also loved walking through and seeing the various life size animals- giraffes are REALLY TALL, people This museum is the perfect size to walk through and take your time, and still be able to cover everything in 2-3 hours. It's perfect for kids and adults, and easy to get to by taking the red line. CL got a couple but his favorite was the Ocho which had cacao and mole, to make for a "damn good" cocktail. I had the Passion Amarga, which was also delicious. We loved the vibe, it felt like being in a friends living room, with the furniture and the music was at a perfect level. The service was wonderful. So much in this museum I don't think you could possible see the whole place in one day. We spent 4-5 hours here and may have seen 50%. I so wish I lived closer so I could take it all in over several visits. The mineral and rocks area especially drew lots of my attention and I spent way too much time there and slowed us down a good bit. It's was so freaking cool though! Giant wads of gold and precious metals everywhere. Things I have never seen. Wonderful things! Also.... They have dinosaurs and so many cool things. Glass flowers, ancient artifacts, rare finds from around the world all housed in the historic University of Harvard campus. Check out my pics. Stopped here at the end of a biking trip and thoroughly enjoyed the free tour. I'd never heard of…read moreDallin or this museum before, and after the visit, I found that fact somewhat appalling. I went in not expecting much and left absolutely amazed. There is so much movement and expressivity in his sculptures. They remind me of early Rodin. In short, this guy created the Paul Revere statue in the North End, the Native American Statue in front of the MFA, and the trumpeting angel of the Mormon church, among others. He could easily be the best American sculptor of the 20th century but, due to political conflict and possibly his own obstinacy/arrogance, he has virtually no legacy. Poor guy, it took him 60 years to erect the Paul Revere statue in the North End and his name isn't even engraved on the pedestal! Boston politicians apparently didn't care for him much at all. He died penniless and all he gets is four rooms in a tiny house in Arlington to showcase his masterpieces. It's a nice little museum though, and the curators are very knowledgeable and dedicated. You can walk through the place on your own, but it's small enough that having a docent guide you through a detailed tour wouldn't take more than 40 minutes. As I said before, everything is free, though donations are greatly appreciated. If you are hosting visitors or just have an hour to kill on a weekend afternoon, this local treasure is well worth the trip.

All of our vendors were treated extremely poorly by the staff, they were very unwelcoming to myself and my groom and were disinterested in actually helping us with any requests, even something as simple as dimming the lights during the reception. Staff was rude to our caterers, our DJ, our coordinators, and had no interest in problem solving. The removed art from the reception area (even though we literally picked the venue for the art). Overall it was horrific experience. Museum is beautiful and would likely be a wonderful location for a wedding if there was a staffing update. Would not recommend hosting an event here.

I give two stars not because there was anything wrong with the museum, but because of the poor…read morevalue. I went here on one of those "Free Fun Fridays" hosted by the Highland Street Foundation. Ordinarily, it costs $7 for adult admission. I am accounting for this fact in the review because the other 364 days of the year are not free. I have no problem paying to get into a museum, but again, it is not a question of costs, but rather one of value. The museum is one small room, the hall with the main desk (with a few photos around), and a larger, much more open hall about the size of a large chapel, or really small church. Suffice it to say, unless you wish to carefully examine all the works, the museum can be viewed in under 45 minutes (and even that is pushing it) I am a fan of photography, and I would love to see the always changing displays in this museum. However, my concern returns to the fact that for a tiny room, a large room, and a few paintings in the area with ticket desk costs $7. However, if you are a die-hard photography fan, they have some books, and some really old camera equipment you can look at and purchase (I don't know if old cameras are for sale).

This review is about the Somerville Open Studios (May 2-3, 2009) - the Vernon Street Studios…read more Sadly, we were working with condensed time frame, but we were able to get a decent amount of the studios in. Art is very personal, I come from a long line of artists (despite have zero artistic talent myself). Luckily, that has provided me with the ability to have an open mind and appreciation for works (well, most of the time ha ha ha). I was impressed to see that Somerville has such a vibrant artist community! From studio to studio there was a variety of medium, design, and artistic thought. Of course there were some studios that looked more like a psych eval than a studio - but sometimes those are the best! The photography was amazing as well, gorgeous shots - those artists have a great eye. It was a wonderful opportunity speak with some of the artists, hear about their works, vision and inspiration. I will definitely be keeping an eye out of Open Studios throughout the Greater Boston area. It would be great to fill my home with local pieces that move me rather an filling it with mass produced prints. Open Studios gives you the chance to learn the story behind your art - a rare chance that should be capitalized on!

I loved it cuz I was geeking out. My husband not so much.
