Brought my BFF here to indulge in some international chocolate because I knew his ass would. Pretty sure he dropped nearly $100, but I wasn't counting. I asked to try one of the chocolates he bought--the Blueberry Chocolate. I picked up the rest for my BF and me. Chocolate Bar "Black" - I passed this out at the local theater where I volunteer, and everyone loved it. Dark chocolate is so in right now. What I liked most was that the texture wasn't dry, yet it still had a strong, pleasantly bitter flavor. I assumed it was around 60-70% cacao, and after looking it up, it's actually 62-63%. It's definitely sweeter than the dark chocolates I normally eat, but still very enjoyable. At $10, it was a great way to share chocolate with 26 people. That said, I'd rather spend the extra $13 on their Nama Chocolate and give everyone an unforgettable experience. Royce's Origin Chocolate "Bitter" - This will be hard to review because I'm definitely not a chocolate connoisseur. --Ecuador - Reminds me of a bitter coffee bean. Very fragrant, though I wouldn't describe it as floral, despite the tasting notes claiming floral characteristics--unless we're talking about something peppery. This one was my BF's favorite. --Venezuela - Much milkier than the previous flavor. Lighter and more subtle, almost like drinking coffee and then finally getting hit with the milk foam. I 100% agree with the nutty tasting notes--it gives off strong hazelnut energy. This one was my favorite. --Madagascar - Much sharper in flavor. My BF described it as "fruity," and while I had a harder time deciphering it, I agree that it was noticeably tangier than the others. It also ranked the highest in acidity for me. I don't necessarily taste fruit, but that tang does lean toward a citrus-like quality. It tasted like the outer wilds, for sure. --Colombia - Mmm. My BF suggested caramel or cinnamon notes, but I'm picking up a flavor I recognize and just can't place... nutmeg. It reminds me of nutmeg. What an interesting shift from the bright, tangy profile of the Madagascar chocolate. Blueberry Chocolate - One of my peers described it as "potent," and I completely agree. It's a tiny little bead of chocolate, yet it packs a powerful punch. I believe it's a layered milk chocolate with a blueberry center. It was phenomenal, and I'd absolutely come back for another. I bring friends to Royce often for a unique chocolate experience. Sometimes they do tasters but they've always got something unique. Love the matcha chocolate especially. The small pieces melt on your tongue easily. This time around I got to split some chocolates with several friends: Blueberry Chocolate: A must for fruit lovers. Little pieces of rich dried blueberry with a milky rich chocolate. Black Chocolate (looks like a bar): sitting at around 60-70% dark chocolate, you get a milky note and not too bitter of a taste. Extra Bitter Dark Chocolate from around the world: from Ecuador, Venezuela, Madagascar, Colombia and it highlights the profiles of floral, fruity, nutty, bitterness, acidity on each type of cacao. Really fun for a group tasting as they come with five sampler pieces per country. Universally, these taste a lot like eating a smooth version of coffee in chocolate form. They're actually seriously that bitter. Having them back to back with a palate cleanser lets you distinguish the little notes. Ecuador was a bit acidic and quite bitter. Venezuela was less bitter but slowly almost unfolds a bit with a milkier. Madagascar was actually incredibly fruity, and ended on a bitter note. Colombia felt very balanced, with a strong caramel bitter note. Ecuador was absolutely my favorite as a dark chocolate fan, followed by Colombia. The cold chocolates were so good. I am not a fan of dark chocolate but theirs was so good I considered getting some but since they need to be refrigerated and I wouldnt be home for hours I opted out. The business was quaint and clean, and the staff was very personable. The chocolates were absolutely fabulous. I did try a few different types of chocolate, one being more of a crispy cookie called the Baton Frommage. It is chocolate and cheese, and it tastes exactly as it states 10/10 Next was a white chocolate potato chip, which was absolutely fantastic. The balance of sweet and savory with the crunch was beautifully done- 10/10 Lastly, I had to try what they're known for which is their Nama chocolate. The texture of the Nama chocolate is soft, almost like a cheesecake and the taste was very decadent. I tried an orange chocolate, a regular dark chocolate and white chocolate with white chocolate being my favorite. 10/10. One of the things that I noticed about these chocolates is that a lot of them are individually wrapped so they make great gifts options and they are packaged well. The only slight quirk to the Nama is that it has to be refrigerated so that may not work for some. Wanted to try Japanese chocolate and heard about Royce Chocolate. It was a nice small modern store with a decent variety for sale. I came in not knowing this was a prestige chocolate store. They only have a limited selection to taste samples of, which is kept in a cabinet behind the counter. Wasn't expecting this since other chocolate stores have everything in glass but here, everything is sold as packaged. Different from other chocolate stores that sell pieces of large chocolate bark/bars by the pound. I bought the Black Chocolate bar for $10.99 and enjoyed how it isn't too sweet or bitter. Nice place to get a gift for someone but wouldn't stop by for a sweet treat for myself considering the price/inability to mix and match chocolate pieces. Amazing product and stunning service. I tried a variety of chocolates, some tabs, the and the nama collection. I tried the matcha nama and the origins collection pack. The Nama was nice and creamy with the right amount of matcha to provide a balanced taste of earthy matcha and the smoothness the Nama is known for. The origins collection provided a trip around the world via cacao sourced in Ecuador, Venezuelan, Vietnam and Madagascar. All these taste very different from each other. I loved being able to compare the different tones of fruitiness, bitterness and feel on the tongue. I can't wait to go back! Chocolates are fantastic, as expected but staff is super courteous and go above and beyond. I had missed getting a seasonal edition of their nama chocolate (matcha fromage sea salt), and staff let me know that it might be possible for them to get it in a future shipment. Apart from that, the last time I was in store they had a new seasonal offering that I wanted to try before purchasing and they managed to open a fresh box for me to sample. I was given a tour of the store and allowed to try samples of some of their hit products. So, I came to validate the expensive one that my sister bought was made with fresh cream and all imported from Japan. There are many inexpensive ones. I recently came across a video of Royce Chocolate on my TikTok and when looking into it, I realized that there was one in Houston! It is slightly hidden but it's in the same strip center as 7 leaves and bae ice cream in Bellaire. The store itself is quite small, but there were so many choices! The lady inside was kind and helpful and she even gave me a sample of the "White" Nama chocolate - which was divine. I ended up buying the "Au Lait" Nama chocolate (which is milk chocolate), the milk chocolate potato chips, the matcha bar chocolate, and the pistachio chocolate.
