Royers is an institution, and they've gotten so popular, people were waiting on the porch in the rain at 2pm for their 5pm dinner opening. Their posted hours say they're open all day Thurs so not sure what was up. In any case, every time I've eaten there I have enjoyed the good home cooking and friendly service. This is my first time visiting round top and we decided to come here on our last day brunch. The inside was super packed and the wait was about 45 minutes for 7 people. This place is super cute and festive!! We all got their lunch specials and the food tastes fresh and yummy. I got the shrimp blt sandwich and it was the best shrimp I've ever had. You may/may not get seated at your reservation time, but I will say if you're not in a hurry...I promise you this little joint won't disappoint! It's so worth the wait! Stopped in for dinner, we did not call in ahead. Waited a bit but it was well worth it! I am from Southeast California and was just passing through on our way home from dropping our son off at college. We do not have food like this at home. After reading so many reviews extolling the virtues of all the great food served here, I feel inadequate mentioning my one visit and how much pie we ate and how good it was. So instead I'll just tell you the story. My sister and I rode our motorcycles out here one hot summer day just to eat pie. A 70-mile one-way ride on a 90-degree day. There was an open table when we arrived and after debating what kind of pie to order our server told us we could order the pie sampler, which had 4 slices of different pies topped with vanilla Blue Bell ice cream (see photo). I don't remember what pies we ordered but we decimated that sampler (see other photo.) I asked my sister what the time stamps were on the two photos. They were taken 9 minutes apart. So yeah, two 40-something year old women rode an hour each direction to sit down and inhale 4 slices of pie and 4 scoops of ice cream in under 10 minutes. This intimate little cafe in Round Top has charm and a country feel. Started with the fried green tomatoes which were superb. She had the pimento grilled cheese and the bread combines well with the cheese and crispy bacon. I had the shrimp BLT which is a signature sandwich and it tasted really good. They advise you don't separate the ingredients on the sandwich for the full effect and normally I'll take off onions but I bit the bullet and was so glad I did. The place is famous for their pies and they ship nationwide. They charge you for taking OFF the scoop of ice cream which I absolutely love. Great marketing and a little bit of attitude with how they run their restaurant. Unfortunately this was where our experience fell short. We had the jumble berry pie and the rhubarb pie. They were a bit bland and the crust wasn't very flakey or notable. When you're told their pies are famous you expect mouth watering pies and our choices just didn't live up to our expectations this time. On my quest of visiting restaurants in the region after moving to Brenham, Texas I have ventured to Round Top a fairly well known community due to its semi-annul antique fairs visited by folks from all over the world and often featured on various popular home improvement and DIY shows including one just fir a local business. As always let's start with the service. Very good and attentive without being annoying which is always a good thing. The decor...old looking, eclectic and gives off the feel much like visiting an antique store when you have to look through a lot of 'junk' to find that one gem item. I like it. The food...very good. Order the Savanah Chicken Sandwich with a bowl of Tomato Basil soup to start off with followed up with a lemon-blueberry pie. The soup arrives first and it was tasty though I would have to say it seemed something was just off with the flavors being somewhat muted. Took me a couple minutes to realize that it was to much water added causing to much thinning of what is normal long a thicker soup thus leading to the muted flavor. Still tasty but not as hardy a flavor as I normally like. The sandwich was very good and flavorful not being much like any other chicken sandwich I have had in the past with just a touch of sweetness. I would order it again. The pie with a scoop of Blue Bell ice cream was excellent. Not much else to say here but yum. I will be visiting this place again possibly for dinner next time though the steak prices did scare me a bit but what the heck anything for good food. If you are traveling in the area you should make an effort to route through Round Top to stop here. Though I do not recommend doing so during the fairs unless you like crowds. read more

I took my family of 6 to Royers last night to celebrate my daughter's birthday and Father's Day and it was incredible. The owner greeted us as soon as we walked through the door and he could not have been nicer. This place is a hidden gem in this small town. Our party of 3 stepped in for lunch and the 10 tables eatery was full. We had to share a table with a friendly couple which was fine. Here is the summary of what we ate: Grilled Shrimp BLT and fries - fresh and big shrimps with two slice of thick cut bacons. The proteins were perfectly seasoned and grilled. The fries were ok, nothing special. We gave it 4 stars. Center cut pork chop plate with broccoli salad and creamed corn - the pork chop was juicy but lacked seasoning. The raspberry chipotle sauce was definitely needed to compliment the pork chop. The cold broccoli salad was bland and creamed corn was on the runny side. We gave it 3 stars. Grilled pimiento sandwich - the feta and cheddar cheese based sandwich with 2 slices of thick cut bacon was different and but tasted good. Again the fries were just ok. 4 stars for this dish. Royers is a family owned business. The food is absolutely delicious. The steak OMG, that is what it is called is my go to favorite. I always order a side of creamed corn (not the yuckie stuff from the can). And jalapeño cheese grits. They have just a bit of spice but not too overwhelming. Pair that with a slice of pie which you must get while in town. My second choice is the shrimp and jalapeño cheddar grits. My husband loves the Jud's steak special. It is grilled and served over a bed of mashed pastors. He goes into a carb coma after eating. But worth it. Steaks are a bit pricey but worth every bit and I would put it up in competition against anything in Houston or Austin any day of the week. We live here in Round Top and eat there frequently. This place is the definition of small town charm! Eating here was an experience for sure. The decor is so cute inside, and the wait staff is very kind and helpful! A bit pricey, but you can easily get 2 meals out of each entree because the servings are huge. My husband and I both had leftovers. The only thing I think could be improved is the takeout area. While people were waiting to order food to go, they had to stand right next to our table, which normally would be fine but was a little uncomfortable with Covid. So sorry folks, went here for dinner and the food was horrendous! Couple of things: -when a restaurant does not show their prices on both their to-go and online menu, be worried! -when sweet tea looks like Turkish Coffee be worried! Tons of grounds in the tea! -Shrimp and Grits was a BIG mistake. $20 for 5 decent sized shrimp on extremely pasty "grits". When a kitchen uses cream cheese in jalapeño cheese grits be worried...it was more like a dip laced with grits and they were barely warm. So get this the cream cheese seized up and you could literally turn the plate upside down and the grits did not fall out (see pic) -the snapper was rubbery and seemed to be finished in the microwave. Not good. Came with cream corn...again loaded with cream cheese...Yuck! -The lemon chicken was a nice surprise Dinner was $128 for 2 adults and 3 kids...not worth the spend. During a weekend getaway in Round Top, we stopped by Royers Round Top Cafe for a late dinner on a Saturday night. It's good we stopped by then because they're Round Top's most popular restaurant. We passed by on a Sunday for lunch and there was a long line. When we showed up, there was a pleasantly plump old man sitting on a rocking chair outside of the restaurant. We later found out he's the "pie man" and owner of the restaurant. When you walk in, Royers is one of those quirky cafes with a lot of character. It's casual and a cool place to have a meal. After ordering some beers, we shared the pork tenderloin which comes with your choice of two sides. We went with the mashed potatoes casserole and creamed corn. The sides were average. The mashed potatoes were your typical mashed potatoes and I didn't taste or see a casserole element to the side. The creamed corn was solid but I've had better. With that being said, the pork was the star of the dish. It was seasoned just right, cooked just right, and oozing with juicy tenderness. It was the best dish we had in Round Top. We did save room for dessert since they're known for their pies. We went with their junkyard pie which is a hodgepodge of fruit like berries, peach, etc. I can't remember what was in it but it was delicious. For an additional $2, you can add a scoop of Bluebell vanilla ice cream which you should! A la mode desserts are always fantastic. Service was a bit slow but super friendly and nice. We chatted with the pie man on our way out and he was a really nice guy. Asked us about our vacation and where we were from. Highly recommend you check it out if you're in the area! read more

My dining experience at Royers was as mixed and diverse as their pie offerings. Ambiance was kitschy and welcoming; coffee pours were non-stop - completely on queue. Pies were amazing. We took an assortment of slices to go. But the regular food menu was 2- to 3-stars worthy. We started with the Really Big Stuffed Jalapeños that were burnt, like, to a crisp and had little to no trace of crabmeat and skrimps. Had they been served cooked normally, I'm certain they'd be pretty damn good because the menu description is what sold us (jalapenos stuffed with swiss, cheddar cream Cheese, and crabmeat and shrimp stuffing. Side of cilantro-ranch dressing for dippin'). My girlfriend and I split the catfish sandwich and the shrimp and grits. The sandwich was soooo incredibly salty. Everything about it was good - the slaw, the bread, the perfectly cooked fish ... but the batter was a salt lick. The catfish grits, I somewhat liked. A little more on the creamy side, but better than the sammy. That being said, I'm certain they do have good, stick-to-your-ribs fare, we just didn't experience it that day. Such a cute little place with a big reputation! Knew a girl who worked here growing up and I always thought it was huge, til I stepped in! Very small and quaint, with a fun small town atmosphere. FAMOUS for their pies! We used to get them as gifts to our family growing up. Finally got to eat inside last week and we loved it! Our waitress was soo good and truly ran the restaurant! You can depend on having a darn tasty lunch at Royers, however with that will come a high price. Perhaps because they've been mentioned on Junk Gypsy's they've justified the prices that way. The five in our group all enjoyed our lunches, they didn't disappoint at all! The service isn't that of a 5 star restaurant, but you can depend on your drink being refilled when needed and food is a bit slow to come.
