Here for lunch with the Miata Club on a Saturday. You've heard of closing a place down? Well, we opened the place up. 19 cars, so it's a good thing we're here before any of the weekend lunch crowds. Hubs and I had breakfast before the ride, so we're not terribly hungry. We're going for fried jalapeños (cause we're never gonna pass those up) and a grilled chicken breast with hand cut and sweet potato fries. Weird. I know. The atmosphere in here can easily be called "cavelike" -- maybe even "claustrophobic." Part of that might be how beautiful and bright it is outside but the light here inside by the bar is minimal, and the tin roof and walls back here make it feel pretty closed in. (Ok, not commenting on any of the time it takes for service- we ARE a group of 25+ people, and they did a great job of getting all the orders out at the same time) Fried jalapeños came out first, Luke warm. They've got a good heat (spice, not temperature) to them. And the cilantro ranch is definitely worth dunking them in. BIG grilled chicken breast, certainly glad we split it. And a healthy serving of both fries. They brought a second plate for us to split it onto (love the "thinking ahead" for that!) First time trying this place after coming through this small town for many years going to Warrenton and Round Top for the Antique Shows. Love the old town style of this place. I image an old saloon when entering this place. It was packed tight inside. The wait to be seated was about 30 min. But that told me the food must be good! The service was southern friendly like I expected. The kitchen was smoking like a hat stack and the smoke filled up the dining area. I'm not sure if that is the norm but it seemed to me to be more than what should be expected. We ordered our food and waited another 35 min before our food came out. Again, not sure if that is the norm or because of the Antique Show traffic but it seemed like a bit long. The waitress apologized for the delay in the food without us saying anything at all so I suppose it was not normal. I was with a friend so we had good conversation so no problem. The food was scrumptious! Some of the best fried catfish I have had and the French fries were too! Even the coleslaw was better than most places I've had it. Shrimp and grits was inedible. Instant grits with shrimp (no seasoning whatsoever) that tasted like it came straight from a sad, precooked grocery store tray. All swimming in the most vile, greasy sauce. You would think the server might inquire when she saw the dish, practically untouched, pushed to the side while I made do with my friend's potato chips. This visit to Joes place was ridiculous! 1st of all there was several of us that had come in and waited for some time before a waitress came out and exclaimed "where did you all come from." We had already helped our selves to a menu and silverware because no one was around. We ordered the blackened catfish with a baked potato and side salad. It was so ridiculous! Enjoyed a good home cooked meal. The one thing that was just ok was the candied Bacon. Seemed a little small and average for the price. Would skip this next trip. We had chicken fried steak which was very good and tender. Cream gravy had good flavor and the right creaminess. The side baked potato was very small. Also had the pork chop which was a nice size chop a little over an inch in size with raspberry chipotle glaze. Chop was good but maybe just a touch over done for my taste but still good. Food took a little long for the time of evening and number of patrons there. The 12yr old waitress(ett) carrying two big platters almost dropped my plate in my lap. Once the food was brought out, we barely saw our waitress. Both drink glasses empty. Had to ask for condiments for the catfish. This is usually a well deserved 5 review kind of place. I ate here in August and got a steak. I was very unimpressed. I asked for medium rare and it came out well done. There was zero flavor and it was so dry it tasted like sawdust. We decided to try Joe's again on the first Sunday in October, and after our experience there, we decided we'll never return even though we're semi-local. The three ladies on the waitstaff were absolutely horrible and rude. We went to Joe's Place to have a few drinks and appetizers before ordering lunch. We were there for over two hours due to The waitresses ignoring our table. We only received one refill during the entire stay, had to flag down the waitress who ignored us, but came back 20 minutes later with the refills. I ordered a Cesar salad with grilled shrimp. We also ordered a couple of wedge salads, a burger, and a grilled chicken plate. The shrimp on my salad smelled very "shrimpy" and, again, had zero seasoning... the salad greens were skimpy. We wanted to order desserts, but again, the waitresses never came around the table... they stayed in the kitchen area. I understand it's hard to find good help these days but please consider re-training your staff. read more

Ok, I grew up in this place BEFORE it was Joe's. It was Schramm's Confectionery and I LOVED it there! Now, its remodeled and it looks like nothing from I remember! The big solid oak bar is now gone, juke box, gone & and a lot of stuff that I remember is now gone. But, the food there is good, not great mine you, but good. It was a little confusing at first of where to pay (I ordered as to go order) The staff is friendly, and welcomes you with a smile. But, it just seems different now. We found this place on the Texas bucket list, it did not disappoint one bit! Homemade chicken fried steak just like your grandma would make it. Honestly, some of the best chicken fried steak I've ever had. Homemade cut fries and onion rings, can't beat that. My girlfriend had the friend catfish which was also great. Heck, aren't all of the good down-home eateries something along the lines of "Aunt Sue's" or "Big Momma's Kitchen"? Well, let me tell you what, I have traveled across the lands and plains to eat good Southern cookin', and I can honestly say this is one of my most memorable stomach-filling, Southern-comfort meals that I have ever had. Sure everyone was hospitable and local, but really... the food blew me away. Let us expound upon this notion of Solomon's true approval. The special chicken fried pork sounded good. So did mac and cheese and scalloped potatoes as my side. The 45 minute wait to get my grub on? Wow. Well, out came the most tender tenderized pork cutlet ever. Encased in the crispiest crust ever. Covered in the most flavorful jalapeno-bacon gravy ever. Let us rewind. I have never had a CFP, jalapeno-bacon gravy, OR neither served with scalloped potatoes. The potatoes were rich, cheesy, and creamy. The mac and cheese may have been homemade and carefully crafted, but it tasted simple, no-frills, and not gourmet; sometimes you just need a basic shell and cheese side. I left stuffed to the seams. I vouch for Joe's 100%. This is a dining must. Heck, I was probably the only Asian to ever drive through F-Ville, much less stop and chat for a near hour and a half. We have been here 3 times and really like this place. They make great cocktails, and are one of the very few places in the area that even serve liquor. Joe's is on the charming old square in Fayetteville and is a really neat establishment. Its a great place to sit at the bar and watch football. The fried mushrooms were very good! We stayed for dinner last night after watching a college football game at the bar. We hadn't had dinner there before and didn't expect much more than bar food. We were pleasantly surprised that they had a decent wine list. The lamb chops were very tasty and cooked to perfection. My wife said the 8 oz fillet was excellent and My freind had the tilapia which was topped with crawfish etouffee, and he really liked it as well. If you're paying attention... I'm getting caught up on my Yelp-ing today! Joe's was our "after a long day sitting in traffic trying to get to RoundTop Flea/Antique Market on a motorcycle" dinner and it was a day saver; let me tell you! The ambiance in this place is amazing! They have the OLD fashioned wooden / European bar along one wall of the restaurant and a VERY extensive beer and wine menu for a small restaurant off the beaten path. I imagine they do a pretty good business around the RoundTop days twice a year and the rest of the time it is locals or people that have "happened upon it". We had beer and wine and ordered food as we were FAMISHED by this point in our day. We started with Fried Pickles, recommended by our server, and were really looking forward to them, but were disappointed. The batter was too thick and they were overcooked to the point that the pickles were completely dried out. Due to being hungry and needing the sodium... we ate them anyway, a midst our complaints about the texture. We ordered (REALLY not healthy when really hungry) the Chicken Fried Steak and the Chicken Fried Chicken. Both had too much gravy (recommend ordering it on the side) but they were both moist and tender and cooked to perfection. The gravy was supposed to be "jalapeno gravy" but there was very little peppery heat or flavor to it. For sides, I had the sweet potato fries and my wife had onion rings, we both had mashed potatoes. All were fine, but just that. All in all, for an out of the way, stop in desperation, we were pleased, and might even go back to Fayetteville to "hang out" for some hours... but we wouldn't make a special trip just to go back to Joe's place... read more

We were exploring on a Sunday and came across Fayetteville. We discovered Joe's Place on Yelp and decided to check it out based on the reviews. We were happy to find that it was open on Sunday. In fact, it was the only place open in the sleepy town square. We ordered a couple of Bloody Mary's, which were not worth $7. We also ordered a wedge salad, fried mushrooms and garlic fries, which were edible. The wedge salad was not a typical wedge salad as they added granny smith apple slices, pecans, and gorgonzola cheese crumbles. The other menu items looked good so I would try it again. read more
