Labor Day 2024 and our cottage washer backed up and flooded the floor. We called and left message…read moreand 30 min later, Earl called back. Unfortunately, we had called another plumber, unsure of how long a call back would be and scheduled a visit for today. Earl was very polite even though we had to tell him someone else was coming. We waited two hours for the other plumber to call when on way and then realized we should have stuck with Earl! Earl had cleared a clog for our neighbors the previous day. We called back Earl and he was considerate of the other plumber, not wanting to take the job from someone else. We assured him we would cancel the other plumber (someone part of a conglomerate and was fine with a cancellation). which we did and called back Earl. He explained that since we are on a septic, he wanted to help us know whether it was really a clogged line, which he could work on, or a failed septic or drain field which would be something he couldn't fix and we would end up having to pay him to come out and have nothing fixed. Earl took his time to explain to us how to check our septic tank and figure out if the field was working. Sure enough, the problem was a mat of roots. We cleared them out of the inlet pipe from inside the septic and clog was cleared. We offered to pay Earl for his advice and he declined. Needless to say, Mid Michigan plumbing will be our go to from now until the end of time. Highly recommend.

May 22nd I called these guys up about a backed up sewage line, they sent someone out the same day…read morewhich was great. Their crew got here after a couple hours and then popped open my cleanout and dumped the sewage into a storage tote I offered up and sure, they spilled some sewage all over my floor but they're just getting started so I said "Meh, we'll let them do their thing." They stick a snake into my cleanout and work it 2ft into the drain and then said "I'm just getting mud so your line is broken out there." Alright, where we go from here? "Well we are down a truck so we can't actually dig it out and fix it today, but we can do it on Tuesday (May 26th) but it'll cost $150 an hour for us to dig it out and then whatever is needed to repair the line. Since they couldn't fix that day I told them I'd talk to the wife about it. My cleanout guy goes downstairs while the other dude talks to my wife about the problem and as I'm standing next to my still leaking cleanout because they didn't put it back on right he says "Hey can I use some of your paper towels?" and I'm like "okay, well at least he's gonna clean up the mess" - I hand the paper towels over to him and he's like "Thanks!" and proceeds to wipe down his sewer snake and then walks off leaving my floor covered in sewage and my tote tub full of sewage water, waste and toilet paper pieces. For this great pleasure, the home office sends me a bill of $275. For reference, you can buy a drain snake for $40 on Home Depot (there abouts) and two seconds of googling if you don't already know will tell you any kind of earth pulling back means the line is compromised and seeping in soil as the waste turns the dirt around the break into slurry. I ended up renting an excavator, dug up the pipe myself, and replaced the pipe myself for $400. I can only IMAGINE what these conartists would have charged to do it.

Story of the furnace: It was blowing cold air. We would have to turn it off for 30 seconds, then…read moreturn it back on. It would then blow warm air until it hit the right temp. Once it turned off and got cold again. It would then kick on with cold air. So we would repeat the process. We called Answer H & C who said they could come out immediately and look at it. Which I was grateful and the reason for an extra star. Once they started looking at the furnace, within minutes said it was because of our smart thermostat and the power adapter. They said we needed a new one. Which not knowing much about furnaces I took their professional opinion on it. I contacted the smart thermostat company and they said with the problem we were having is not due to their product. They wanted us to get something in writing from the heating and cooling company. Which we did not get in the first place. So I decided to contact a different company to see if they would tell me the same thing. Once again within second of taking off the panel, they saw some O ring that shouldn't be laying there in plain sight, and said we have a bigger problem. After taking 30-45 minutes inspecting the furnace they found we had a huge crack in our heat intake I believe they said it was. Which could cause carbon monoxide poising. By the state of Michigan they had to shut our heat off. Which this was the coldest week we have had so far. They showed me on the camera where the crack was and actually ended up finding two. We ended up going with that company for a new furnace since they were able to bump us up ahead of schedule within a couple days. Long story short, it seems like the Answer gentleman that came out did not want to work to hard and he realistically could have caused us more harm not fully inspecting the furnace. I was upset we paid $150 for him to come out and put the blame on the smart thermostat within 5 minutes of being there. Only reason I gave an extra star was the time frame they came out. If he would have inspected it and found the same crack I am sure we would have immediately went with them for our new furnace. Now I will look else where whenever needing any other service done.
