The Ruby Slipper Cafe is relatively new to Mobile, but it has already made itself one of the must-try restaurants. I have visited about half a dozen times, and each time has been absolutely fantastic. My biggest complaint is that I never know what to order - everything is so fantastic! I would highly recommend one of the benedicts; they are delicious and a good portion size. I usually get the Peacemaker, which is a mix and match of any two benedicts. I can never decide on just one benedict, so the Peacemaker helps me solve this issue. I then typically decide between the Eggs Cochon, Chicken St. Charles, Corned Beef Bennie, or the daily special benedict. You can't go wrong with any of these! I've also tried their pancakes, which were tasty. You can also order a biscuit on the side for $2. I wish they advertised this more! I ordered one once and it was HUGE. The menu is full of appealing options, ranging from omelets and sandwiches to fish & grits, pancakes and French toast. Oh, and several special drinks for your sippy cup. My wife and I split The Costa Rican, which is a great combination of black beans, rice, tomato salsa, avocados, chorizo and plantain chips. Our friends had the Florentine omelet with portobellos, spinach and goat cheese. They also got a side of corned beef hash & a Bloody Mary. Our waitress was extremely pleasant and courteous, and our drinks were never lacking. She had a tablet to input our order, and it was equipped with a card reader to take payment right away when we were ready. The food was good, too bad the staff were as dry as wallpaper paste, no interactions, no smiles, very impersonal service overall, waitress failed to deliver one of the items ordered and then tried to slip the tab and leave, no apologies whatsoever. I would expect that from a city up north, but Alabama? Really? Keep in mind that this place ain't cheap so the overall experience becomes tarnished when this happens, and this was my overall experience in Mobile unfortunately, too bad because the city is truly beautiful and clean, don't expect southern hospitality here, you're not getting it. Hubby and I were downtown and it was lunch time so we gave Ruby Slipper a try! We were greeted and seated immediately, perhaps because it was closer to 1 and the crowd had dwindled down. The ambiance of the place is memorable from the old restored tile floor to the hip wall decor. The center bar is impressive with it's refrigerators hidden from view - great design! Michelle was our waitress and she was great! I ordered the Croque Madame Sandwich and Hubby ordered the Big Bacon Hamburger with side of fries. The Croque is coffee glazed shaved ham & swiss on brioche bread topped with Mornay sauce and a poached egg. It was HUGE and delicious! The fries were addictive. Hubby took one bite of his burger and said, "Wow, I think this is the best burger in Mobile". He shared and I must say it was pretty spectacular. He substituted the candied bacon for plain applewood. We have had the candied bacon before and it is awesome, but sweet. He decided he wanted a more savory lunch! Chef JP stopped by to talk with us! He remembered us from a "biscuit making" event we had attended. The pros for this new addition to Mobile are: great food, friendly staff and big portions at a reasonable price. This is a Fabulous place for breakfast or brunch. We had a party of 10 and our waiter Maurice was very helpful and patient with us. He told us their specials and his favorite dishes. He took good care of us. The coffee here is hot and fresh. Every dish our party had was delicious. I had the Hot-Smoked Salmon Benni" it was very flavorful and cooked just right. I also tried a bite or 2 (or 3) of the French Toast, Shrimp and Grits, The Costa Rican (with black beans and fried plantains) I'll definitely be getting that again and also the "Candied Bacon"... Oh my goodness the candied bacon! If you are a meat eater this is a must have! Absolutely delicious! We were pleased with everything we tried And will be back My husband and I just came here again for a biscuit making class. We sampled the Candied Bacon drizzled with chocolate ganache and it was a pleasantly addictive. Then we sipped on a beautiful glass of Ruby Slipper Pomegranate Mimosa which was great. I've never been able to make a biscuit from scratch. I've tried many time and only rocks come out of my oven. This was a great class! They talk up through it and demonstrated how The Ruby Slipper does biscuits (which they always make fresh throughout the day so you know you're getting a fresh fluffy biscuit when you come here). My husband and I worked as a team and couldn't believe our biscuits turned out good. They were even better once we added the cane butter and strawberry preserves. Oh my! So yummy! Drove an hour to check out this place and it's sooooo worth it. Went there at 11 am on a Saturday, checked in through Yelp a few minutes before and our table was ready upon arrival, no wait! Ordered bloody Mary's, good if ya like spice, and I do. Not likely to overindulge at $10 a pop. Had the French toast bites, made up for the waitMmmmm. Ordered the shrimp Benedict and Mrs had the salmon and Cocho. All good, would have liked a little more sauce, as the fluffy biscuits absorbed all the liquid and the result was dry. But flavor was wonderful. Wait staff Sabrina made the suggestion of the French Toast bites and was right. Her advise was as on point as her service, props for making the experience better. They are a very popular breakfast/brunch spot the estimated 45 minute wait wasn't surprising. I went to the hostess stand to check on the wait time after it hit a hour. I got the text that my table was ready a few minutes after that, I went to hostess to let her know and she walked away without acknowledging me speaking to her. She placed menus on the table then pointed to it for me to walk to. I ordered french toast bites along with eggs and breakfast potatoes. The potatoes were the worst I've ever tasted. Unseasoned and not even hot. Thankfully the other food was as requested, my waitress was semi friendly but acted like she didn't understand how to service at certain points if our interaction. She wasn't clearing the table from starters either. None of my guests really enjoyed their food mainly from lack of flavor and temperature. I was worried that it wouldn't taste the same or the service wouldn't measure up to what I received in New Orleans but you can't tell the difference in service nor the food. I had the peacemaker which consisted of the St. Charles and the Cochon and a side order of the cinnamon swirl pancakes. The St. Charles is a chicken breast fried to perfection with a poached egg on top with a sauce that is amazing. The Cochon is pulled pork that is seasoned very good and has a poached egg on top as well. What also make w these two so good is that biscuit! It is a big mountain of fluffy dough that when you break the egg along with the sauce turns your plate into match made in heaven. The cinnamon swirl pancake never disappoints. It is so huge that you only need one. It's fluffy on the inside and has a light crisp on the edges like I like my pancake. The extras of cinnamon and the cream icing just a makes it over the top.
