Reached out to several companies - only DC Handyman called me back. And thank goodness they did! First of, their desk is run by Chastity. Whatever they are paying her, they should pay more. Having dealt with several home repair issues this summer, I've called several specialty repair shops, and none of them have someone as professional and customer centric as Chastity. From that first interaction, she gave me confidence in the company. The estimate was more than I was expecting ($425 for 2 hours of work), but Chastity was able to explain costs and expectations so well that I decided to just have faith. You get what you pay for, right? Next, I met Avishay and his crew. They took a look at my toilet and thought that a replacement of the tank hardware would fix the problem. Except when they tried to remove the parts, it turns out this particular toilet is an all-or-nothing type, as in the tank part that was the problem can't be removed. It was looking like my only option was a full replacement of the toilet. Yikes! I was busy researching how much does a new toilet cost, but Avishay continued to work on the part. He figured out how to open the part and tried a variety of fixes (cleaning, tightening, etc) to get it to work. After about 40 minutes of work - it did! He was able to take my very finicky and specialized toilet and work some magic. I would expect the average repairman would have just said it wasn't worth it, and advised me to just get a new one. But Avishay was determined, and I am very grateful. Chastity followed up with me after the work was done to confirm my satisfaction and confirm final cost. At the end of it all, I was charged $250 for an hour of work, and my toilet is fixed! I am delighted, and I will definitely be keeping this company on file for my next repair job.

The job was quite simple, replace kitchen flooring with material provided. The team at DC Handyman confidently said they could do this then proceeded to butcher my floor. There were large gaps, ripped sharp edges, curved lines. The workers used no straight edge, no measurements, and no wood filler while destroying all the material. They could tell we were appointed with the job and left anyway saying there was not much they could do. I requested someone else complete the work, they said someone would come out but after follow ups, this never happened. I requested a partial refund then sadly they stopped responding. I gave them plenty of time to reach back out to me, instead they moved on and ignored my messages.

He showed up on time, examined the window with me and laid out a plan for the repair. After working on it for a bit he brought me back down for an update: there was a lot more water damage than we expected. We made a new plan to replace more of the frame. There were a couple more surprises that kept expanding the job (more rotten wood, an old rats nest in the wall above the removed window, brick damage caused by the rotten beam bowing and not supporting the bricks above the window properly). The job ended up being a lot bigger and more expensive than expected (2.5 day job rather than 0.5 day; billing is by the hour and very straightforward), but I couldn't be happier with the work and the process. Rather than a quick patch job I ended up with a solid, long-term fix. Here are a few more reflections on working with Mike: -Great communication. Mike gave me frequent updates, walking me through what he found and what the options were. -I never felt like I was being upsold. Mike was very collaborative and empathetic when showing me problems and discussing solutions. -Mike's knowledge and skillset goes deep. If this had been a simple window sealant job with a frame board replacement I'm sure he (and probably lots of other handymen) would handle it great. But as we peeled back the onion and found more complexity it became clear how well he understands houses and how to make them work the way they're supposed to. Last year, they converted my claustrophobic 4X7 bathroom into something livable. I consulted with other contractors and even an architect on possible solutions for making the space feel more open and liked Jeremy's approach best. They said it would take 1 week for them to send over the estimate. They've completely ghosted me for the last 2 months. I've sent three emails requesting updates on their estimate and no response. I'm disappointed that I took a day off from work to meet with their estimator, and now will need to get more quotes. IDS initially responded quickly to scheduling time to come out for the estimate on multistory porch rebuild, roof deck replacement and tuckpointing on my property in DC. They had asked about the scope of the work prior to coming out, so would have known if it was too small for their company. A simple "sorry we are too busy to take on the project" would be the minimum expected professional response from a real company.

I've used them before but they never worked as long and as hard as they did today. Last time, there was a single worker, he stayed for probably the same amount of time as the guys did today. Yes, there were 2 guys who showed up, each one running different machines. They put lights in all the rooms so they could better see. And I watched one employee spend a good amount of time on some stains that were in the entryway of the kitchen. In the end, the results were fantastic. The place smelled better, and it was much cleaner. Just an awesome job by these workers...and it takes a LOT to please me, believe me. GREAT for rental property owners. It's a franchise so calling the 1-800-number does nothing and they won't tell you how to contact the franchise directly.

The parking garage underneath is run by a-holes though that charge the same for residents as they do for the government hot shots that commute and park there. The laundry room was recently revamped and is as good as it gets for a building laundry room. ATM in building is awesome. Service: Nicest staff ever. Maintenance is quick and well done. The online website makes it easy to report problems, pay bills etc. Overall: I loved living here, but as soon as I graduated I had to GTFO right away. Side note: Don't listen to Chris R. He lived down on the 3rd floor and never had one party in his place. I think hes referring to his apartment and friends in "The Sims" game.

As for WHY Tub Coaters wasn't picking up my calls and my 1 star review? Eric said that they use some fancy Voice over IP (VoIP) phone system and in an effort to avoid spam calls, the system blocks phone numbers that call repeatedly. What's the solution? They said they'd speak to their phone provider to get it fixed up. As for us customers, I'd suggest filling out their online form. Hopefully, those messages will be safe! His studio apartment was perfect for a college kid's needs, and anytime there were maintenance issues they were promptly addressed. He didn't have to worry about anything. The most important aspect of his stay there, though, was the staff. From George, who we helped us choose a unit and set up the lease, to the front door staff--especially Walter (who my son grew to love and will miss)--everyone went above and beyond to be welcoming and helpful, not just to my son but to my husband and me when we would visit. Even during move out this was the case (special mention again to Walter for his help--you are an angel!). Any GW parents looking into Hamilton House for their student: this is a really great option for off campus housing. It's quiet, safe, and the building is managed well. Can't recommend highly enough!

We ventured into the beautiful Stona showroom on Grace Street in Georgetown and were pleasantly surprised to find a marble mosaic that suited our purpose. The Stona staff were very pleasant, helpful and accommodating. The owner, Mert Bakan promptly came to our apartment, took measurements and provided a very reasonably priced bid to do all the work including demolition and re-tiling. One of the things that we liked about Stona is that they have their own craftsmen, unlike many other stone retailers who could only recommend independent contractors whom we then would have to contact to do the installation. Stona provided a full service. Within a week of accepting their offer Stona sent two installers to do the job; small by comparison to many jobs (38 ft2). The installers were very careful removing the existing woodwork, which they refitted and replaced at the end of the job without damaging anything. (Frequently the demolition requires replacing the moldings.) The demolition of the existing floor was done without much disruption and the installation was very professional. Mert Bakan came to inspect the job before the installers left and to make sure we were satisfied with the entire process. He and his staff are friendly, helpful, and efficient as well as attentive to detail from start to finish. We are very satisfied with the finished product and would highly recommend Stona based on quality of materials, professionalism, price and overall efficiency.
