Reached out to several companies - only DC Handyman called me back. And thank goodness they did! First of, their desk is run by Chastity. Whatever they are paying her, they should pay more. Having dealt with several home repair issues this summer, I've called several specialty repair shops, and none of them have someone as professional and customer centric as Chastity. From that first interaction, she gave me confidence in the company. The estimate was more than I was expecting ($425 for 2 hours of work), but Chastity was able to explain costs and expectations so well that I decided to just have faith. You get what you pay for, right? Next, I met Avishay and his crew. They took a look at my toilet and thought that a replacement of the tank hardware would fix the problem. Except when they tried to remove the parts, it turns out this particular toilet is an all-or-nothing type, as in the tank part that was the problem can't be removed. It was looking like my only option was a full replacement of the toilet. Yikes! I was busy researching how much does a new toilet cost, but Avishay continued to work on the part. He figured out how to open the part and tried a variety of fixes (cleaning, tightening, etc) to get it to work. After about 40 minutes of work - it did! He was able to take my very finicky and specialized toilet and work some magic. I would expect the average repairman would have just said it wasn't worth it, and advised me to just get a new one. But Avishay was determined, and I am very grateful. Chastity followed up with me after the work was done to confirm my satisfaction and confirm final cost. At the end of it all, I was charged $250 for an hour of work, and my toilet is fixed! I am delighted, and I will definitely be keeping this company on file for my next repair job.

The job was quite simple, replace kitchen flooring with material provided. The team at DC Handyman confidently said they could do this then proceeded to butcher my floor. There were large gaps, ripped sharp edges, curved lines. The workers used no straight edge, no measurements, and no wood filler while destroying all the material. They could tell we were appointed with the job and left anyway saying there was not much they could do. I requested someone else complete the work, they said someone would come out but after follow ups, this never happened. I requested a partial refund then sadly they stopped responding. I gave them plenty of time to reach back out to me, instead they moved on and ignored my messages.

Mike did an amazing job repairing our leaky basement window! I reached out via email to show some…read morepictures of the damage. He replied back with an estimate and some times he could come out. He showed up on time, examined the window with me and laid out a plan for the repair. After working on it for a bit he brought me back down for an update: there was a lot more water damage than we expected. We made a new plan to replace more of the frame. There were a couple more surprises that kept expanding the job (more rotten wood, an old rats nest in the wall above the removed window, brick damage caused by the rotten beam bowing and not supporting the bricks above the window properly). The job ended up being a lot bigger and more expensive than expected (2.5 day job rather than 0.5 day; billing is by the hour and very straightforward), but I couldn't be happier with the work and the process. Rather than a quick patch job I ended up with a solid, long-term fix. Here are a few more reflections on working with Mike: -Great communication. Mike gave me frequent updates, walking me through what he found and what the options were. -I never felt like I was being upsold. Mike was very collaborative and empathetic when showing me problems and discussing solutions. -Mike's knowledge and skillset goes deep. If this had been a simple window sealant job with a frame board replacement I'm sure he (and probably lots of other handymen) would handle it great. But as we peeled back the onion and found more complexity it became clear how well he understands houses and how to make them work the way they're supposed to. Mike and Renaissance will definitely be my go-to for future handyman / painting / renovations needs. Thank you Mike!

On May 30th, Mike Jones came to fix the light switch that controls the recessed lights in our…read moreliving room. We provided the replacement switch. We suggested that he turn off the circuit breaker but he said there was no need. He took the light switch off and got shocked. Mike continued and the lights went on. We Venmoed him $140 for time and labor. Twelve hours later, the LR ceiling lights went out along with two lamps that had been working perfectly before Mike's repair. We called him. He told us to buy another replacement switch and said he would return to fix it. He didn't We e-mailed him three times, asking that he refund the money we paid. It's now July 8th. He has never answered. We have hired a licensed electrician to ensure Mike's fix did not make the wiring unsafe, install new wiring if it isn't, to repair the light switch and the blown outlets. We intend to pursue this further and, should we ever receive the refund due us, we will add an update. We cannot recommend Renaissance Handyman & Painting and hope this review saves someone else a bad experience.

I've used IDS for four major projects (and a fifth is starting soon). I initially hired the company to repoint the front and side of my brick townhouse and to wall over an old AC box. They did a great job, so I hired them to do the back of the house, where they ultimately had to rebuild some very bad sections lurking beneath stucco. After an issue with a different contractor, I hired them to redo my drywall, and the team did a really nice job. Then I hired them to build new piers in my crawlspace. Next, they're doing insulation. Jeremy, the owner, seems very knowledgable. His project manager Kostas has been fantastic to work with, as has Raissa, who managed the latest. The teams have in each case arrived on time and worked incredibly hard. When unexpected issues arise (and they do, of course) the project managers address them. I'm sure you could find a less expensive contractor. But you get what you pay for and I'm glad that I don't have to worry about projects that drag on forever or fear for the quality of work performed.

It's a franchise so calling the 1-800-number does nothing and they won't tell you how to contact the franchise directly.

I lived in The Statesman for 2 years and throughly enjoyed the experience; however, after 2 years and after graduating from GW, I decided to move on to find another apartment because the rent in Foggy Bottom (and in NW DC) is very high compared to what you can get in Arlington. Though on the topic of location, it's great if you're a GW student as you would be close to GW classes and facilities (in fact, within campus boundaries), 5 blocks from Whole Foods, close to other quick-service eating options and walking distance from the White House and the National Mall. There are other residents who are not GW students, but students are definitely in the majority. Having looked at other places on or very close to campus it is the better deal relative to those other options if you're looking for a studio apt (mine was 625 sq ft with an enormous walk-in closet). The leasing office was friendly and helpful, was they were throughout my stay and concluding with my move out. The apartment itself was in good condition and not too noisy as I was facing the courtyard. You can sometimes hear the noise of residents and their guests walking and talking in the hallway, but other than that, it wasn't very noisy. The appliances weren't exactly state-of-the-art, but they weren't old or bad and worked throughout my stay. I would rather have basic-looking appliances that are functional than state-of-the-art looking ones that break fairly often (as some of my friends in other buildings with them have experienced). In terms of maintenance, I have had to submit a maintenance ticket a few times and they have been quick to respond within 24 hours and were always friendly and helpful. The front desk staff has typically been very nice and helpful. Carmicheal and Howard, to name a few, are always friendly, helpful and eager to be of assistance.The 24-7 concierge is definitely a plus for The Statesman. The only thing that really got on my nerves was the billing office. I have dealt with them a couple of times regarding my rent payment and they claimed that they never received it despite setting up automatic payments. It seems that automatic payments is never automatic (having had other friends who used this method experiencing similar problems, even with other mgmt companies). Avalon's only way of notifying you was through under the door notes, which was problematic for when I was away for a few months even though some of the people at the front desk knew I was away. They could have contacted me by phone or email, but apparently that's not an option for Avalon. I would have given less stars for this review; however, that would not do the friendly staff and the great apartment justice. Other negatives that I would mention are the small roof (which is strange because there is a lot of potential roof space that is not used) and the small "gym." Overall, The Statesman is a great apartment building for GW students in the Foggy Bottom area with friendly and helpful staff. The biggest negative; however, is the billing office of Avalon, having heard of some bad stories of friends dealing with their respective mgmt company in other buildings, it seems that my issues with Avalon were minor. Of the apartment buildings on GW's campus, The Statesman is definitely the best one with the best value.

As for WHY Tub Coaters wasn't picking up my calls and my 1 star review? Eric said that they use some fancy Voice over IP (VoIP) phone system and in an effort to avoid spam calls, the system blocks phone numbers that call repeatedly. What's the solution? They said they'd speak to their phone provider to get it fixed up. As for us customers, I'd suggest filling out their online form. Hopefully, those messages will be safe! His studio apartment was perfect for a college kid's needs, and anytime there were maintenance issues they were promptly addressed. He didn't have to worry about anything. From George, who we helped us choose a unit and set up the lease, to the front door staff--especially Walter (who my son grew to love and will miss)--everyone went above and beyond to be welcoming and helpful, not just to my son but to my husband and me when we would visit. Even during move out this was the case (special mention again to Walter for his help--you are an angel!). Any GW parents looking into Hamilton House for their student: this is a really great option for off campus housing. It's quiet, safe, and the building is managed well. Can't recommend highly enough!

We ventured into the beautiful Stona showroom on Grace Street in Georgetown and were pleasantly surprised to find a marble mosaic that suited our purpose. The Stona staff were very pleasant, helpful and accommodating. The owner, Mert Bakan promptly came to our apartment, took measurements and provided a very reasonably priced bid to do all the work including demolition and re-tiling. One of the things that we liked about Stona is that they have their own craftsmen, unlike many other stone retailers who could only recommend independent contractors whom we then would have to contact to do the installation. Stona provided a full service. Within a week of accepting their offer Stona sent two installers to do the job; small by comparison to many jobs (38 ft2). The installers were very careful removing the existing woodwork, which they refitted and replaced at the end of the job without damaging anything. (Frequently the demolition requires replacing the moldings.) The demolition of the existing floor was done without much disruption and the installation was very professional. Mert Bakan came to inspect the job before the installers left and to make sure we were satisfied with the entire process. He and his staff are friendly, helpful, and efficient as well as attentive to detail from start to finish. We are very satisfied with the finished product and would highly recommend Stona based on quality of materials, professionalism, price and overall efficiency.
