I lived in the Statesman for 2.5 years as a GWU student. I am assuming that you too are a GW student in reading this review, because if you aren't you should not live in this building. Unless you like college kids passed out in the hallways and late night parties (like I do), you should not live here. With that said: The Apartments: They are great little first apartments for young twenty somethings. Standard white box with dreaded parquet panel wood flooring. A little on the pricey side, but hey you go to GW right? Facilities: The gym is good enough, as is the roof deck. The parking garage underneath is run by a-holes though that charge the same for residents as they do for the government hot shots that commute and park there. The laundry room was recently revamped and is as good as it gets for a building laundry room. ATM in building is awesome. Service: Nicest staff ever. Maintenance is quick and well done. The online website makes it easy to report problems, pay bills etc. Overall: I loved living here, but as soon as I graduated I had to GTFO right away. Side note: Don't listen to Chris R. He lived down on the 3rd floor and never had one party in his place. I think hes referring to his apartment and friends in "The Sims" game. read more

Is a hard pass for the rent rates needs some updates .THE BUILDING looks safe and clean in a great location but it's very plain and dated so I think the rates all to high for the outdated and not so great views from the units available and the rooftop view and high fence was not as nice as most rooftops in dc .Maybe if they remodeled it would be an ideal place in a great location to live in DC as there was plenty of security in the neighborhood which is much needed for DC. read more

For several months the building has been doing construction on the facade exterior of the building. This has entailed endless brick cutting and drilling right outside our windows on the 6th floor. The dust and construction debris has made the air inside the apartment unbreathable and dangerously so, even with all the windows closed and taped. In fact everything in our apartment is covered in dust and construction debris. We have been coughing around the clock and this is a serious HEALTH ISSUE. After multiple requests to management to address this issue, weeks later, there is still no resolution beyond sending someone to sweep up the literal piles of dust from all of our stuff. Even when the main issue is the unsafe air. No treatment of the air or offer of HEPA filters was given. We did all the taping and sealing of the windows ourselves after weeks of no movement. And bought a huge HEPA filter ourselves which we have to clean daily after being clogged with construction dust and debris. Recently we noticed a kerosene smell in our apartment following intense construction drilling on our wall. We were worried about a possible gas leak due to the overwhelming noxious chemical odors. After submitting and emergency service request, contacting management, and voicing our concerns about the fact that we couldn't remain in the room due to the fumes we received this response "we'll send someone by, maybe today or tomorrow." After following up and submitting that it was uninhabitable due to the fumes, no one has showed up. We are now convinced that there is a systemic issue of negligence by the STATESMAN management in responding to tenant habitability issues. It is the latest in a litany of problems due to building issues that have been completely ignored or been given the run around. read more

The highlight of living here is the staff. John at the front desk is very attentive and very thorough. He does a great job making sure the residents feel welcome and if you have any questions about your packages or other needs, he always will find time to help and prioritize you. John has been a consistent and great part of my experience at the Statesman and makes the time to ensure that everyone is taken care of. John's willingness to help me and everyone in the community has been one of the main reasons why Ive decided to continue my lease here. read more

Ehhh...its okay. Archstone has a lot of better facilities in the NW DC areaif you really want your money's worth. Its a great apartment if you want to be on the GWU campus, but dont want to live in the dorms. The rooms are spacious and there are a ton of units that have been built out so that there are more bedrooms than technically listed. If you do decide to move here, I advise investing in a good air purifier. Every apartment I've ever gone into had a distinct smell that changed every couple of hours, depending on the activities of the neighbors. If you are in undergrad and looking to move "off campus," but want to still stay close to classes, I recommend over any of the other apartment options I've seen. If you're in grad school or dont have any affiliation with GWU, save yourself. Go somewhere else. read more

I'm a student at GW living in the Statesman. The rooms are fairly high quality and the staff is all extremely nice. The walls are thick (I've never heard any sound coming from the rooms beside or below me and only a little bit from above) and I definitely love the convenience of having a gym in the basement. Utilities are included in the bill (except cable and Internet), which is convenient. The building is extremely overpriced though, even for Foggy Bottom. The rent is WAY too high, ranging from about $1700-1900 a month for a studio apartment, which is a little bit higher than the price of other apartments in the area. But it's the extra charges that push it over the edge. Your $500 security deposit is nonrefundable (how does that make any sense?) and if you want to have a pet it's another $500 nonrefundable security deposit ON TOP OF an extra $50 monthly charge. They do waive the security deposit for some tenants, but you also have to pay a $500 amenities fee that is, you guessed it, also nonrefundable. The Statesman is convenient and a high quality building. Even with the extra charges it's still cheaper than GW student housing, and I have no complaints about anything except for the price. I reiterate that the employees are great and super friendly, and if there's ever anything that's broken it gets fixed in a timely manner. If you can afford it, I would definitely recommend living here. But if you're looking for the best deal around, probably try looking elsewhere instead. read more

I lived at The Statesman Apartments for years while attending George Washington University. While I lived there I absolutely loved it: Reasonable Rent with Utilities included, literally on campus, and large rooms. I would have to say though if I didn't go to GW at the time I would probably not have been happy in the building. I would have to guess that around 75% of the building is students and if you are looking for a quite residential building this is NOT the place for you. On any given weekend (which starts on Thursday for those who have not been in college for while) you will hear loud parties and will probably catch a nice whiff of some herbal relaxation. Now as a student this was not a problem at all for me, all though there were some residents who were not happy. I will honestly say there were weekends when I had 50-70 people in my apartment drinking and partying until the early hours, which is why I loved it. So make sure you take this into account before you rent, your not going to experience this on the tour at noon (most of the building will probably still be asleep). read more

I love living at The Statesman. Hands down best decision I have made. I checked out the apartment next door and nothing compared to the quality of the Statesman, and the friendly staff/leasing office here. The leasing office associates go above and beyond to help their tenants and future tenants (Thank you Ciara and Davowa). Not only is this a fantastic building (with utilities included) but its priced extremely well considering its amazing location! 4 minute walk to metro, whole foods, 10 minute walk to Georgetown, and short uber into any other part of DC. The Statesman is a great first apartment for GW upperclassman looking to live "off-campus" while not having to actually be more than a 15 minute walk from on-campus facilities, classes, events, etc. In the middle of the freshman side of campus (across from Potomac House and 1 block up from Thurston) the Statesman's location is a definite dealmaker. The leasing office staff are completely incompetent- which was a very frustrating aspect of leasing at the Statesman, and I don't know how 90% of the leasing staff is employed. Day staff at the front desk and maintenance staff are great. Always attentive, and consistent (complete opposite of night staff, which mainly sits at the front desk watching movies or talking on the phone all night). The maintenance team is great- always quick to respond to maintenance requests or duties of similar nature. As for security, the building has what I have deemed a "rent-a-cop" on duty at night whose entire job consists of enforcing noise complaints and being old (she has to be at least in her 60s). The apartments are really mediocre for the price (with studios running around $1800 a month) but utilities are included in the monthly rent charge. Cable and internet are not included and the building doesn't offer a "deal" from any local cable service- I don't know if I am just new to the cable and internet bill scene- but internet alone runs around $40 a month and with cable added to that the total runs around $100 a month (which I think is highway robbery!) The physical condition of the building is below average. It is in desperate need of renovations, and a fresh coat of paint and new carpeting in the hallways which when you walk down, send you straight back into a nightmare of a rainy day in the 70s. The apartments have hideous parquet flooring (I still can't believe they describe the floors as "beautiful" on the apartment website.) Appliances, cabinetry, etc. are all on the low-grade scale, and are obviously cheap and poorly made. That being said, with a coat of paint on the walls, a nice rug, and a touch of home, the apartments have a ton of potential. Although the building is primarily occupied by GW students, there are a few stragglers from the real world who have chosen to live in this apartment complex. In the middle of a college campus, I have no pity for noise complaints etc. from these people. The non-students who live here are total freaks. Really, though. Avoid conversations with them because you will want to run away and avoid any future encounters. The population of these people vary in age from late 20s to what looks to be well over 100. The 20-somethings who aren't students are primarily foreigners...then there are the middle aged crazies who you should avoid interacting with on the principle of them being uninteresting and total party killers, and then the old people who are cute to watch and should be remembered in case of fires, etc. because they need to be carried down the stairs. Overall, it is a decent "first" apartment but I would NEVER rent here if I weren't a GW student. Can't wait to move out/up! read more

There is a terrible construction work conducted by the landlord on our bedroom facade. It has been continued for a month. Huge noise. Dust and bad chemical smells are all over our bedroom. A complete disaster! read more

Do not live here. The leasing office is extremely difficult to deal with and incredibly rude. They have no respect for their residents bc they know rich GWU students are willing to pay. They increased my rent by the full legal limit of 10% after I've lived there for two years and were unwilling to negotiate even though comparable buildings nearby were charging much less. They did not inform me of fees on my account and took legal action against me without sending proper notice. It has been extremely difficult to fix this situation. As for the building itself: it is noisy and full of GWU undergrads. Grad students beware - The hallways smell like weed everyday and kids are getting high on the rooftop everytime I go up there. read more

I have lived in the Statesman for quite some time now and I feel that it is one of the better values in the neighborhood.The rooms are of a high quality, utilities are included in the rent, and there is a gym in the basement as well. The location is a big plus-Georgetown, Dupont Circle, and the Kennedy Center are all within a close walk, as well as restaurants, shopping, and a host of other attractions. The staff at the Staesman is outstanding. Carmichael, John, and Yamille at the front desk are always courteous, friendly, efficient, and professional, and community manager Davowa is extremely helpful and available when needed. Andrew and the maintenance staff do prompt and excellent service, and everyone contributes to a pleasant living experience. read more

Lived here for a year. Location: Good if you want to be near work or school. Otherwise its depressing; There is nothing to do in Foggy Bottom, and none of your friends will ever want to come over. I am a graduate student at GWU and I have been living here since August 2016 and I really have large complaints. I have found that the walls to be really solid and sound proof; I very rarely hear my neighbors. The only noise I ever really hear comes from the hallway through my door, and even then it is never too bad. The staff for the Statesman are also really helpful. They answer all my questions efficiently and effectively and are always really cheerful. I have never had a bad encounter with them. I also really like that the statesman has a gym that I can have access to. Overall its a great place for a student, the kitchen is a decent size and everything is usually pretty quite (at least for where I live in the building). read more

I currently work near The Statesman and proximity to the office is my main consideration for choosing to rent an apartment at this building. The office is a short walking distance which saves me from waking up much earlier and eliminates the need to take the Metro or bus to work, especially in winter. The apartment complex is close to the National Mall (for short/long walks and sightseeing), Kennedy Center, Georgetown shops, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, several CVS stores, and is a 10-15 minute walk to the Foggy Bottom Metro station. My only complaint is that there are no regular supermarkets nearby. The rooms are clean and receives sufficient natural lighting. The studio apartments are of adequate size and there is generous cabinet and storage spaces, including in the kitchen and bathroom. There are two trash compartments/rooms on each floor although the residents need to be more aware of proper trash disposal. The hallways are likewise clean but in the past two years of living in the apartment, I did experience on two occasions, walking past "debris" possibly from residents/guests who had too much to eat and/or drink, but these were cleaned within the day. I particularly liked the concierge services during weekdays, especially with respect to handling package delivery. The front desk staff Carmichael and John were both courteous, helpful and facilitative. On the very few encounters that I had with the leasing office staff, I also found them helpful and willing to help me better understand the apartment policies, since English is not my first language. While I can probably get a lower rent somewhere else, I can understand why the rent may be a concern given the central location of the apartment. And since proximity to the office is my main consideration, I can still tolerate the relatively high rent. Overall, my experience in residing at The Statesman has been positive so far and I would recommend this to potential renters. read more

I moved into The Statesman 40+ yrs. ago and have never regretted it. There's never been a reason to move. It is centrally located to everywhere you need/want to go in the Washington area; it sits amidst a safe, dynamic neighborhood; and it is a solidly built building, well-maintained and managed. Staff is congenial, knowledgeable, and always helpful. They make it a home not just a place to live. I'm a GW student, been here about 4 months, so far, so good. Lobby staff is incredible, very friendly and helpful with deliveries and guests. Apartment is nice, beautiful floors, clean, appliances good, though my dishwasher is a bit dated. Very quiet, laundry facilities clean and well maintained. On-line monthly statement easy to use. Leasing process was quick and all on-line, just need to follow all the directions in order. The only change I could suggest is some artwork for the hallways, they are long and somewhat dark and need some brightening to make the apartments seem less institutional. read more

Leasing terms are very vague and they squeeze as much money out of you as they possibly can through taking back "concessions" and act as if they were doing you a favor by not charging you 500 dollars over the amount you actually pay but you end up paying that amount per every month you stayed anyway if you break lease early. Beware because I asked them before signing the lease of the possibility of my breaking the lease early and they never explained any of this. And then they expect you to not be angry at them when you get an outrageous bill! read more

Great location, helpfull office and maintenance staff.

Pros: Leasing office: great, courteous, no problems so far after living for a few months; rent can be paid online; they are open on saturdays Front desk: professional and courteous; package acceptance service Maintenance: on time job completion, there is emergency service for things like smelling gas or refrigerator breakdown Cons: Laundry: downstairs, card operated machines where you put money on a card that runs out quicker than anticipated; machines are often full at peak hours, limited settings on the machines that can shrink your clothes if you're not careful Parking: like a lot of underground parking lots in the city, the spaces are small and hard to maneuver with a medium or larger size car and average driving skills; $250 unreserved space means sometimes you cannot get in or out because the spaces available are too hard to maneuver; $350 for a reserved space where you can pick a more easy spot but even these can be hard to get in and out of; the garage is run by Laz parking which has nothing to do with the Statesman leasing office, there is commuter parking on the first level of the garage. The parking folks have been reasonable so far to deal with, however the person who takes new applications/cancelations is only there from 6am to 3pm; the other guy cannot handle these requests and he is there from 3pm to 6pm. At all other hours and weekends there is no one in the garage. Heating/Air conditioning: controlled by the building and not in individual units, in other words, if the management decides it is cold enough only then would heating for the entire building be turned on - until then, wear a lot of layers at night. same for airconditioning Kitchens: in a studio, it has been small, no dishwasher in my unit (and usually $200 a month difference for units with one), stove is gas, refrigerator broke down recently and had to throw out all my food but it was replaced within a day Ok: Residents: I am not an undergraduate, the school year has started and yes there are a lot of undergraduates, but it has not yet been unbearable loud; a few parties occassionally can be heard through the walls. ** but there are frequent fire alarms for actual fires caused by people leaving stuff in ovens Overall, it is ok to good for the necessity of being near GW/GW hospital, but I'm not sure if I'll live here for a long time. read more

Ciera was attentive, knowledgeable and genuinely cared about making sure that your needs are always met and questions are answered on a timely basis. She exemplified the highest echelon of customer service and professionalism. Simba's positive and friendly demeanor are an outstanding presence to come home to every day. Davowah, Carmichael, the lovely ladies on the weekend and the rest of the team are highly competent and a pleasure to deal with. The building is well situated in the heart of Foggy Bottom and the GW campus. Thank you very much for making my experience a positive one and I hope you get the recognition you deserve!!
