Never been to the other Rudy's in the area, but I guess I went to the best one according the other reviews. Standard Mexican food joint. Game changer to me was that they make their own tortilla chips and don't just heat up some store bought ones under a lamp. Right across the street from The Neighborhood Bar and Grill and The Brewhouse. Definitely most of their clientele comes from these bars. Good Drunchies and they serve beer their too. Five Star Dive. We got lucky on our quick pit stop in SB. Needed to grab a quick bite before getting back on the highway - wifey directs me to Rudy's. It took a minute to navigate their menu, but ended up with a burrito, quesadilla, and taquitos for the three of us. The salsa bar really elevated this place from 4 to 5 stars. I love being able to dress my meal with the pickled veggies and salsa. Had lunch at 1pm. Didn't even need dinner. All for a reasonable / standard price. Will return. read more

The food is ok here, but with the myriad of other Mexican restaurants in Santa Barbara, I would probably not return. ESPECIALLY as there is no "TACO TUESDAY" at this location. This is really the only reason that my wife and I would make the 43 mile drive to eat. One of 4 locations, this one is in the older section (SW) of Santa Barbara. I placed an order for mole enchiladas, the girl who took my order got it wrong. Then I waited another 10 minutes for them to fix it. The cook who was supposed to re-do the order thought it was a smart idea to just add mole to the order he had made with pulled chicken and red source. When a restaurant doesn't care about its customers and the food they serve. It's scary. He could have killed me if I was allergic to what he had severed. The managers response was refund the money and send me home. After I had driven from goleta to Sb and back. Totally un apologetic and un-except-able. Horrible customer service and the kitchen staff need to know the importance of the customers that pay for food that end up keeping them occupied with a job. read more

So I'm up in SB today for a swim meet and I never eat the food they have at the meets, I usually pack my vegan breakfast burritos but I did not have time today :( So I yelped all of the nearby restaurants and found this little hole in the wall Mexican joint called Rudy's and wow!! They made me a custom breakfast burrito with rice, beans, potatoes, grilled bell peppers, onion and cilantro. And it was amazing!! Their salsa bar was also great, lots of salsa selection and very clean and organized.. Their staff was super nice and helpful, it's places like this that make me want to leave Oxnard, because all of their Mexican places suck!! Anyways give it a try, its a great place.. read more

I got the chicken burrito to go. It is pricy at $9 but the serving size is hefty. Comes with crisp warm chips and unlimited salsa bar. I am only giving 3 stars because the buritto was too salty for me. However there was a good amount of tender chicken. Salsas are on the spicier side! read more

Um this place caught me by surprise. Super close to where I was staying at the Eagle Inn. They have tacos, burritos, enchiladas, nachos, typical Mexican food items. I quickly noticed how expensive this place was when I was ordering, I mean $5.50 for one beef taco?! And over $7 for an order of taquitos?! 3 street tacos for $11?! Well let me tell you it's worth it. They give you large portions. The hard shell beef taco was loaded with beef, lettuce and lots of cheese in a large fried corn shell, seriously I've never seen a taco that big before. The taquitos were either beef or chicken also very large with lots of guacamole and sour cream. The street tacos I tried were pastor which was quality tasting meat on what seemed like homemade corn tortillas and a side of beans. My order also came with a good size bag of chips. The salsas however were just average, even the "fire" salsa was not really hot and not much flavor. Seems like a popular place as there was a line going out the door. They have indoor seating and outdoor, but we took ours to go and ate it on our patio. They also serve Mexican beer. Customer service was ok. Parking is kinda tight. read more

Went to Rudy's on Montecito St. Once upon a time about 40 year's ago I owned a business just down the street. I had no problem paying over $15.00 for Chile Verde wet burrito. Probably weighed over 2 lbs. and assembled proportionally perfect. A small iceberg salad topped with real guacamole and a small bag of tortilla chips done in House. I was little setback by the price but now have to confess that's the best $15.00 burrito in Santa Barbara. read more

Being from out of town, we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into with authentic Santa Barbara Mexican food... we were not disappointed. The burritos and enchiladas were cooked and seasoned to a T, the food came up quickly, and they have a variety of salsas on the salsa bar for all of you sauce lovers out there. A neighborhood Mexican joint notable for large (seriously large) tacos, large portions in general, (if you're noticing a trend) a large selection of salsas with impossibly tiny cups provided to divy up the aforementioned salsas and an-against-the-curve small selection of meats-as-main ingredients for your tacos. Spent a slightly alarming amount of money on take out Mexican considering the number of people I was feeding, but this very well could be (read: is) a Santa Barbara problem. I absolutely would not go to the Rudys on Canon Perdito in SB! They have no Taco Tuesday! Carpinteria location they do. Owned by brothers and sisters family operated but, each family member does not have Taco Tuesday. If your going to have a family owned business, they should definitely have the same deals! I love the one in Carpinteria but, the one in SB off Canon Perdito just lost my business! I am a healthcare Provider and that location is by my work. I live in Carpinteria. Thats the place to go! The Tacos are better in the Carpinteria location. They give u chips too! I had to ask in SB plus the Tacos are 3.75 in Carp and 6.50 in SB. Thats ridiculous for a Taco! The food here was really good. At first glance the burritos looked pricey but they are HUGE. They fill the giant plate they give it to you on. If you like red enchilada sauce, try your burrito wet. The sauce is yummy and tastes especially good with the melted cheese on top. It was kind of dirty inside, so I would recommend getting your food to go if you can. We chose this place because it was close to our hotel and it did not disappoint us. We definitely had a good amount of left overs that we took with us. read more

They had Mole specials that looked good, but I am such a Combo #1 person (taco and rice and beans) that that's what I get every time. Disappointed in quality, consistency and the female cashier couldn't have been more rude. I hadn't been to Rudy's in nearly 10 years. I had Rudy's delivered 3 nights ago while visiting family. Food was slightly better than average. Shredded chicken in crispy taco was on the dry side, however fresh crispy lettuce and the heaping cheese which is always the best part!! I physically went into the downtown Rudy's today. The cashier just seemed pissed to be there. Signs for the salsa were reversed. When I asked and questioned it, her response 'Oh yah, they're backwards. ' And she walked off. I asked for chips and she tells me they're not free. Fine, I buy the $1.00 chips. As my purchase is sitting on the bar shelf that separates cashier from cooks, I ask if I can grab my bag. I get a eye roll, no eye contact and a ''yah.' I grab my purchase and go to turn around and my bag knocks the chip tray. 3 bags of $1.00 chip bags drop to the floor. I look at her and quickly apologize. She looks at me like she wants to kill me. I immediately offer to pay for the 3 bags of chips and she rings me up. Might I add, I was taking food to go and had already left them a tip. Whatever, she's just rude. Get home to eat the food - close to no cheese on tacos. The shredded chicken is dry as a bone and there was a large chunk in it that I had to spit out. Ended up throwing out entire order. Rudy's is a MUST stop when I visit my aunt in Santa Barbara. Everything I've had here has been great. Generally, I seem to get here around breakfast time and they have absolutely KILLER breakfast burrito options. But the part that really makes this place-the amazing salsa bar. They have a whole variety of seemingly house made salsas, pickled vegetables, radishes, and mixed onions with cilantro. That salsa bar alone lets you know you've come to the real deal. It's not the cheapest Mexican place I've been to, but the ingredients taste so fresh and the food is so well put together, it's absolutely worth it. read more

Wow...that was rather bad! I had a fish burrito devoid of any taste at Rudy's today. It felt like the texture of a burrito with the requisite components of tortilla, rice and maybe some kind of fish substitute ingredient, but literally this dish really was tasteless. The same could be said for the chips...lifeless. In Santa Barbara, there are only about a gazillion Mexican restaurants at the same price or better with far superior ingredients/dishes. Why would anyone waste another meal here? If the restaurant were clean, bright and maintained, or if their stupid credit card machine required less than 3-4 minutes to function, I might give it another go. However there are just too many better meals awaiting me at too many superior local eateries with too few meals left in my lifetime to waste a second go at this place. Sorry Rudy's. :( read more

Delicious Mexican food with a clean and well stocked salsa bar! Cute interior, plenty of parking available. There is a small seating area outside if you have a dog with you. The combination burrito is especially delicious if you order it "wet" with red sauce and cheese. Its $2.50 extra but well worth it! read more

It tasted like they didn't warm up the canned food up in the microwave long enough. It was a sloppy endeavor trying to cut through a tough chile relleno burrito with the cheap, wasteful plastic utensils provided. I tried in vain to add some flavor to my already "wet" burrito with house salsa. At first I was impressed with the variety of salsas at the bar, but after trying them all I found only three distinct flavors: wet, mild, and marinara. I also dined around trash. Tables behind and to my left had piles of unattended garbage left on them. The food was so bland and lukewarm that I left and cleansed my tongue at another taco restaurant. This is absolutely authentic Mexican... Not just the food. As soon as you walk in you are in Mexico. Complete with unfinished construction and chairs that were designed by someone who has never actually sat in one of them. Tons of seating. If you plan to stay and talk, lean forward in the chair to avoid back pain. The decor is not Mexican style, it is Mexican. I'm sure everything in here including the tile and the light fixtures actually came from Tijuana. I've been in 50 restaurants south of the border that are exactly like this. Same chairs. The food is quite good and the portions are monstrous. The salsa bar is limited. That's actually how they do it in Mexico too. They don't try to give you everything you could ever imagine, they just serve up the things they like. In a town where there are so many fabulous options for Mexican flavor, it's hard to give this place more than a 3. But the food is really good and you won't be disappointed. Super friendly people.
