Some of the dogs are harder to walk but for the most part the dogs are marked as easier to walk for volunteers. They give cold bottled waters which helps on the hotter days. Overall 5 solid stars!

Brandy is a perfect fit for us and so loving. We have boarded her twice at Our Pals Place and their attentiveness to our questions, or instructions on what our Brandy eats. They let us bring her bed, blanket, toy, food and meds. Gigi, the Owner and Director is on site, and she makes everything so easy. We were on vacation, and we received two photos of our Brandy playing with large and small dogs. They introduced her to others slowly to make sure all was alright. Our Pal's Place is by far #1 in our book for this area. Privately run and not a large corporate boarding facility. I cannot say enough. Thank you, Gigi and your staff.

We found a beautiful German Shepard mix today at the Dollar Store up the street. We could tell the…read moredog belonged to someone because the dog looked very well cared for (the dog looked to be at least 80 pounds or more) but its obvious he is lost. The poor guy kept going up to every car in the parking lot hoping he would bump into someone he knew. At one point he actually ran toward the main intersection and we actually had to run out to grab him. After a quick search on Google we found Our Pal's and decided to bring the lost dog here to see if we can find his owner. We talked to Gigi the owner who was so nice and helpful. She gave us the name of a vet down the street (Shallowford Animal Hospital) who could check to see if he is chipped. We could tell Gia cared about our lost dog and even gave us a really strong leash to use... Thanks to Our Pal's we were able to find the lost dog's owner. Thanks Gia and the staff here....you guys are an animal's best friend.

Since every organization requires positive leadership, Ms. Bryn the manager leads by example, respect for the customers, the employees and volunteers, and makes everyone comfortable. I have a boxer with extreme anxiety when at vets or shelters and she barked nonstop while visiting Sully and they were so patient. They may have been annoyed (I was beyond exhausted with her barking) but they didn't show it. Sully has been an incredible addition and the whole process was extremely smooth. I would not hesitate to recommend them. I've seen complaints about it taking long to hear from them but people can always call and follow up. It helps to remember they are all volunteers caring for a high volume of adoptable pets and sick/ injured pets.

She wasn't pushy like other places we had visited. Meagan really has a genuine love for her pups. We went in looking for a Poodle and ended up with a Maltipoo. She was too young to eat solid food and extremely fragile. I took her to this organization and it took a month of round the clock care before she was healthy enough for me to adopt her. I'm amazed that my baby survived and grew into a 7 lb tortoiseshell terror. I am so thankful for Half The Way Home's help.

This group does a great job taking in strays and medical case cats and nursing them back to health…read more I have two cats that came from Dana, the founder of this organization. They've both turned out great and she was always available and willing to help whenever I had questions. Over a year after I got one of my cats from her she was still willing to help me with a vet when one of the cats turned out to have feline stomatitis, a disease that caused her gums to become inflamed and kept her from eating. Dana cares more about the cats under her care than anything on this planet. It's ridiculous that people would make up "investigations" by the department of agriculture. Are you kidding me? They pull cats out of kill shelters and try to take care of them and find them homes. You can't always tell if months later a medical issue is going to arise; but if it does, you'd better bet Dana and her fosters would be willing to break their backs for your sick cat all over again.

Frankly, I'd avoid Good Mews. Despite their mission, my experience left me believing the…read moreorganization is no more inclusive than groups that openly exclude people. It has taken me months to write this because it was one of the most demeaning volunteer experiences I have ever had. I joined Good Mews in January 2026 as a volunteer and was selected for the medical committee, my first-choice assignment. I assisted with evening medications including pills, eye drops, and special diets--basic tasks that did not require a veterinary license. I have worked in both animal and human healthcare, own six pets, and completed five weeks of volunteering without a single correction or complaint. On my final shift, before I even entered the building, I was pulled aside by two older white female volunteers--one I had never even met--and told that, after "internal discussion," I was no longer a fit for the medical committee because of my fingernails. My nails had been the same since my first day and had never once been mentioned. Instead, I was told I would be "a better fit" for the cleaning committee. Imagine being a Master's-educated Black woman, lifelong cat owner, and healthcare professional, only to have two volunteer cat ladies decide you belong cleaning instead of providing medical care. I was devastated and am still affected by that experience. The situation raised serious concerns: 1. I was discussed and evaluated without my knowledge. 2. I was removed without prior communication or documented performance issues. 3. Standards were applied inconsistently, since nothing about my appearance had changed. 4. The tone and handling of the situation felt dismissive, isolating, and racially motivated. As one of the only Black volunteers I ever saw there, I could not ignore how this felt. I emailed the Executive Director detailing my concerns. Rather than addressing them, she simply upheld the volunteers' decision and again encouraged me to join the cleaning committee. I then emailed the Board of Directors. One board member met with me for coffee and acknowledged that Good Mews struggles to attract younger and more diverse volunteers. I left hopeful that the situation would be resolved and that I could continue volunteering. He said he would speak with the volunteer leadership and get back to me. That was in April. I never heard from him again. The volunteer who ultimately removed me had been passive-aggressive from my first day. Within minutes of meeting me she said, "There's a code to the front door, but we'll see if you stick around before I give it to you." After five weeks I still had no door code or name badge. Although the medical tasks were straightforward, I was shadowed for weeks. On my fourth week another volunteer took over my "training." Her first question was, in a condescending tone, "What do you feel you need to improve?" When I politely explained I felt comfortable with the routine but would ask if I needed help, her demeanor changed immediately. Throughout the shift she repeatedly inserted herself into conversations and hovered over my work despite my having demonstrated I could perform the tasks independently. As a healthcare professional, cleanliness matters to me. I wore gloves, changed them between cats, and regularly disinfected the medication area. Meanwhile, I repeatedly watched the lead volunteer clean urine, feces, and vomit with her bare hands, manually express a cat into the medication room sink without gloves, and simply rinse the sink with water. She even told me not to worry about cleaning because it would be done later. On one occasion she had cat vomit on her face for over 30 minutes after cleaning it up. Those conditions were honestly disturbing. I adore the cats at Good Mews, and I sincerely hope every one of them finds a loving home. My criticism is directed at the organization's leadership and volunteer culture, not the animals. There are many wonderful shelters in the Atlanta area that deserve support. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Good Mews. I believe I was treated differently because of my race, and after exhausting every internal avenue--including the Executive Director and the Board--I was ignored. I will continue sharing my experience, and I've included a photo of the "too long" nails that ended my volunteer position.

Here are my initial observations: 1) The kitten and senior cat rooms are separate, and are well kept. 2) Yes they run freely, but within the confines of their respective rooms 3) They have a military discount for veterans. 4) They will adopt out furbabies with FIV, etc. I actually pet a small kitten and realized he had a neuro condition poor thing, but nothing was mentioned about it before entering the room. 5) the kitten room has plenty of space for the kitties but only comfortably accommodates 2 couples, especially when children are in tow. So plan your visit accordingly. 6) Public hours are on weekends today's having at least 5 friendly volunteers fit just sitting at the front office, so NO reason for them not to answer the phone - and YES, it's an unfortunate truth fur weekdays AND weekends. 7) Visit early to catch them in more interactive moods, where you can observe their truer personalities and 8) 6Lastly, but DEFINITELY NOT LEAST, while we were properly greeted and briefed, let's just say there was definitely an initial double take and a few stares that lingered just a nanosecond too long (We're a mixed couple) IYKYK Overall, our experience was a mixed bag. Not to sure if I would recommend.

Christine and Kevin have welcomed Moonlight into their family from her first visit. They have been the most accommodating. While most places are hesitant to board a German Shepherd, after Moonlight met Christine, she immediately followed her commands and have bonded with both of Christine & Kevin. They play with her and take her on walks - two of Moonlight's favorite activities. Moonlight has separation anxiety issues, but she has found a second home at Crabapple Bed & Bones. For a dog who doesn't even let other people touch her, on her most recent visit, Moonlight came home nicely shampooed and groomed. Having Moonlight under Christine and Kevin's care while we are away gives us the peace of mind knowing that she is well taken care of. Many thanks to Crabapple Bed & Bones family.
