This is the company who put on the new roofs for my small townhouse development in the city. Every time it rains there is a swimming pool on my rooftop deck because they didn't build it correctly. It doesn't have enough pitch. When I registered it to be fixed (structural issue) "Vern," one of the managers in the company lied to my face, standing on my deck, and told me that standing water on your flat roof for 4 to 5 days is "normal" and meets code." Do I look like an idiot? Finally they agreed to fix it and only did a third of what was agreed to and left. The builder is going with an entirely different company now because these guys are so bad... Beware! read more

I get to be the first to review? Awesome! After suffering under (quite literally) a horrible, leaky roof installed about ten years ago by a shyster-y fly-by-night roofer who spent the years of our warranty lying to us and finally not returning phone calls, we decided to bite the (expensive) bullet and hire a reputable roofer to replace the roof on our townhouse. So, the short answer is you get what you pay for. Ruff was a spectacular company to work with. Kevin, our estimator and project manager, was polite, prompt, honest, and took the time to explain EVERYTHING. We had tons of questions and were clearly roof-shy, and he was super patient with us throughout the process. Once we saw the estimate and managed to catch our breath and pick ourselves up off the floor, we signed on the contract. Now, we had a rubber membrane roof installed instead of the usual tar roof that you see on most townhouses in Baltimore. But let's be clear here: the estimate was three times more than our last roof cost, and twice as expensive as a national chain contractor. It was Not. Cheap. At. All. Really, it's a credit to Kevin and the rest of the people at Ruff that we had such a good vibe from them that we decided to pay for the right people, and get the right roof. After all, it's your house! Amirite?! Anyway, the installation was just as wonderful as the estimating process. We were introduced to the job foreman and the supervisor. We were given everyone's cell numbers. They handled all the permitting and inspections, even closing the street one day. The crew arrived promptly each morning, worked the full day, and cleaned the site completely before they left. The work they did was SPECTACULAR, and if I didn't know that for myself, Kevin and the foreman walked me through every phase of the job so I could inspect the work myself, ask questions, and understand what was being done and why. There was extra repointing to be done; they showed me exactly why, and what was going to be done. Part of the sub-roof had to be replaced: again, they showed me exactly where and why. This is how a contractor should be. It was a fantastic experience start to finish. Even afterwards, Ruff has been great to work with. They rushed the invoice through their accounting department, so we had documentation for our refinancing, and then have been exceedingly patient with us as we finish up with our re-fi. I couldn't ask for better. Oh, and post-hurricane Sandy? The roof is on tight, with not even the hint of a leak. read more

Requested quote. Sent them my plans for metal roof project. Said they would get quote in a week or so. Never received it. Their "QA" person emailed me asking if I received the quote and how it went. Told them I never got it. They did not respond either. Been 6 weeks at this point. Would not hire them at this point even if they did send the quote due to poor communication. If they were not interested in the job or too busy, should have the decency to say so. read more

Didn't expect much... wasn't disappointed. I wanted to get an estimate for replacing the roof on my house. Someone calling themselve " Mike " set up an appointment. Morning of the appt, he leaves a message on my answering machine.... " can't make the appt.. sorry '. Calls a little later and promises to be out in an hour or so.... Calls again and says ' somethings are more important than you... I'll swing by later. Later never comes... haven't heard from him since... A few days later, I get a quality assurance call from Ruff Roofers saying they know I asked for an estimate. Well, when I told them it was a no go, that their employee wasted a day of me hanging around the house waiting for him not to show up..... the people on the other end of the line said... ' thanks' and hung up. Not impressed at all with this business. Signed a contract with Rebuild in Columbia .. much better service...and good prices too !! read more

I'm sure that they do excellent work, but their estimate was significantly higher than the other estimates that we received. Very expensive. Edit: Apparently there was a mis-communication. We ended up going with Ruff Roofers. They did a great job and our roof doesn't leak anymore. read more

I used Ruff Roofers for our roofing job two years ago. They also replaced our skylights. I was so please with the work I hired them again. Recently the fascia on the front of our house was damaged in a wind storm. Called them and within a week the job was done! Great company and great people. Thank you Ruff Roofers! read more

My roof was leaking during heavy rain and needed a repair. They were able to come out for a site visit 2 days later. The estimator, Nick, was very friendly and stated he would have a quote in 2-3 days. 11 days, and 3 follow up phone calls to the office later, still nothing. I figure they lost interest since it is a small project but I would have liked to know one way or another that they would not quote the project. read more

I hope there work is better then there customer service. They were scheduled to do chimney repairs at our condo. I called and told Amy I wanted a cost for them to do additional work while they were here. She said she would get a cost and call me back on Thursday. I never heard back from her on Thursday and on Friday I called and left 3 messages for her to call me. Again I never heard back from her. On Monday I called 2 times and left messages and again I never heard back from her. Here it is Tuesday and they are here doing the repairs and I still have not received a call back. As I said I hope there work is better then there customer service. read more

Ruff Roofers started off so promising. Nick contacted me literally 10 minutes after I put in an online inquiry about my roof job, and followed through 2 days later with a visit to my home to begin an estimate. Then things went downhill. I waited several days to get the estimate, and only got it after I called the office and they put me through to Nick directly. He did send the estimate that day, but it was nearly twice the price of some other estimates. I did want to use Ruff Roofing however, and was willing to pay a little more than other companies, because they seemed so professional at the start. Nick and I compromised on the price over the phone. As we went back and forth, he explained to me that Ruff Roofing needs to charge more because they have high overhead costs, lots of trucks and drones. He then sent me the revised quote, which was not the price we discussed. I contacted him twice to ask for the revision based on what we talked about, and he ghosted me. So, no Ruff Roofing. Pretty red trucks and drones are a nice look for a company, but unfortunately they don't get the roofing done. read more

TL;DR: Poor communication throughout the entire process, poor installation that has caused issues…read moreyears later, subcontractors were used without proper oversight, the job site was left messy, and their mistakes became our financial responsibility I wasn't planning on writing a review because I just wanted to move on from our experience with Charm City Roofing, but unfortunately, our roof continues to cause problems years later. We had a new roof installed by Charm City Roofing at the end of 2023 because the company had excellent reviews and they were reasonable cost. We have a pretty simple duplex so we expected the process to be straightforward. Unfortunately, what should have been an easy roofing project turned into a frustrating and ongoing ordeal that we are still dealing with years later. During the installation, the workers left 20+ roofing nails scattered around our property, with at least half of them near our 2 year old daughter's sandbox. They broke a PVC pipe (sewer backflow pipe) that stuck out of the ground near the house that they later had to come back and fix. Additionally, they cut into the wrong side of our attic while installing solar tunnels that also had to be patched up later due to a lack of communication with workers. We planned to finish our attic in the future and were assured by Darius that a roof exhaust fan would provide sufficient airflow and that soffit ventilation would be "overkill." It was communicated with the company that the attic would be finished in the future, and that we did not expect an exhaust fan to automatically turn it into a livable space. Two months later, we discovered that the underside of the attic roof directly above our daughter's bedroom was now covered in mold due to a lack of air flow. After multiple missed appointments (there were approximately 5 total over the course of the entire ordeal, resulting in wasting at least 3 PTO days) and failed attempts to get someone out to inspect the issue, they finally came to look at it. They then told us we actually would need soffit ventilation and that WE would have to pay to fix the problem. While they were fixing their mistake, the owner informed us that the roof had actually been installed by third party contractors. After correcting those issues, several months later our duplex neighbor noticed water leaking into her closet, something she had never experienced before. She hired another roofer, who found that Charm City Roofing had failed to install proper flashing between the two roofs which required additional repairs. Now, more than two years later, we are still discovering new issues. We are currently getting water leakage near our chimney due to large gaps between the plywood and poor sealing, which we will also now need to fix. Once again we continue to be chasing repairs and trying to correct issues that should have been addressed during the original installation. If you read this far, I think you can see why we don't recommend Charm City Roofing.

Kevin and Christine Lee (Baltimore, Maryland) Just had our leaky roof replaced by Ruff Roofing on Tuesday 10/29/2019. EXCELLENT customer service!! We are very pleased with our new roof. Michael Brewer was our contact and I must say he was an absolute pleasure to work with. He was very professional, courteous and guided us thru the process, made suggestions to help us make good decisions which we appreciated. He did not pressure us to accept any of his suggestions which all were on point. He made me feel very comfortable with the whole process. The roof looks great and we are totally satisfied with the work. Michael provided us with a detailed contract, answered all our questions and I was also very impressed when I came outside that morning to go to work one of the workers was already there and he was pleasant as well. They were finished by the time my husband and I got home that day and had I not seen them in the morning I would not have known they were there but for the sign they left, they left everything very clean. Hands down best customer service by any roofing company I have dealt with. After sustaining damage to my gutter system and roof during a wind storm, I contacted Michael Brewer. Not only did he make sure that every detail was put in my estimate, he also walked me through what they were going to do to fix my damage. Although with this storm many people sustained damage to homes and businesses and they were very busy, I was kept informed when my installation would be. And they delivered on that exact day. My neighbor, although she didn't have any damage decided to have her roof replaced as well. We seriously have the best looking roofs in our neighborhood! The whole process between hers and my installation, was so easy. The supervisor and the roofers were extremely professional and efficient. They were polite to me and made sure the area was cleaned and left like they found it. My roof looks immaculate! My rowhouse has a flat roof, was the built-up-tar type, that required yearly maintenance and yearly repairs. It was a constant source of stress, every rainstorm or snowfall I was worried about what would leak next and those worries were always justified because there was always a leak. Finally, my contractor referred me to Ruff Roofers and I had them replace my entire roof in 2015 and it has been such a relief. Knowing that no matter how much rain or snow we get, I don't have to worry. My roof doesn't leak. And if I do have a problem at some point in the future, the amazing warranties on workmanship and material has me covered. And as an added, unexpected bonus...the type of roof I had installed and the insulation added have easily knocked $25.00 to $50.00 off my heating and cooling bills per month. A quality job from a quality company and I can't recommend them enough. read more

First off - wow...dealing with roofers is about the worst thing I've ever done in regards to contractors. after dealing with several companies to look at my odd project, Ruff Roofers certainly changed my opinion about roofers! Getting an appointment did take a week, but it was worth the wait. Ryan came out, got up on the roof (which 4 other companies did not), and really did a thorough diagnosis. Although I felt like the price was high, "getting what you paid for" actually came into play here - not only was the estimating experience very professional, the crews were all dressed in uniform, the equipment spotless, and the landscaping looks better than it did before they started. After my experience, it is not a shock why these guys are in business after 75 years. I will definitely continue to recommend this company. read more

We experienced a house fire and from the time that Emmett arrived to provide us an estimate to the time that Scott and Papa completed the job, it was top notch. The communication was fantastic...I knew right where we were in the process and continually got updates from Emmett on his efforts with our Insurance company. I didn't have to do a thing. Rich set the clear expectation with me about schedule and let me know what to expect. Scott and Papa set up the job site with safety and protection in mind. They worked efficiently. They didn't leave until the roof was complete and the yard was cleaned up. Scott even provided progress and completion photos of the job. The day I called him about a leak in our living room ceiling, he came by the house and noticed a problem that he was able to remedy that day. When the crew arrived to complete the job, they were timely, courteous, and professional, and they cleaned the debris quickly and efficiently. They were also able to fix a trim issue that had concerned me for over a year. My correspondences with Mike were always professional and he had a great attention to detail and wanted me to be happy. Ruff Roofers provided excellent service, from the initial meeting, to bringing shingle samples, to getting the roof organized and finished to our complete satisfaction. Project manager, Glen, was communicative and efficient. I particularly appreciated the suggestion to remove pictures and fragile items that could fall and break inside our home in preparation for the completely new roof which include tearing off the old one. Ruff Roofers did a phenomenal job on my roofing project. The job went as planned and the clean up was great. The estimator, foreman and the crew onsite very friendly, hard working, and knowledgeable. I couldn't be happier with my experience with Ruff Roofers! They recently replaced my entire roof and installed new gutters, downspouts and a copper chimney cap. From start to finish they were extremely professional and delivered an absolutely excellent product. They arrived on time, and completed the project ahead of schedule. They kept me informed along the way, and were very fast to respond to any communications. Ruff Roofers is an impeccable company that provided great service from start to finish. The total roof replacement went smooth and quicker than I had even hoped for. The crew foreman Scott kept me informed every step of the way. Most importantly they cleaned up the job site and made it look like nothing had ever happened, which was very important to me since my neighbor's roofing company created a huge mess and showed no care for my property. We had overflowing gutters and downspouts on heavy rains. We called Ruff Roofers to help provide a solution. When they came out, they were friendly and took every safety precaution. They quickly identified the downspout was clogged. They were able to fix the issue right there and we have no issues since. We definitely will be calling Ruff Roofers in the future if the need arises. Top notch company. read more

I had three companies out to my parents house and non-could solve the issue. After Ruff sent their technicians out I found the problem within an hour. It took two days of tearing out bad wood but finally we have a leak free roof after 3 years. I have since used used them on two other properties since this project with great success. I highly recommend Ruff Roofers. I had a very difficult job combining a regular shingle roof with damage to the substructure and the replacement of a large metal roof. All was handled admirably with few issues. Those few issues were addressed professionally and immediately. Ryan was fantastic to deal with. All calls were returned within minutes. Ruff Roofers did a great job on our company roof. We called them after we found a leak and Mike was out that day to look at it. We had our roof replaced in 2 days. Mike kept in contact with me the entire time letting me know the status of what was going on. They had a crew on the roof and finished within 1 day of starting. Requested a roof inspection to go with one of our home inspections; I was told that someone would call me back; the girl that answered the phone seemed clueless and NO ONE EVER RETURNED MY CALL. Must be nice to have so much business that you don't have to do that!!! I care much more about my customers than that. read more
