We learned about the gold in the area, the miners, the mining district, and the fate of the local natives. The leader, David, was very knowledgeable. We enjoyed a beautiful 3-mile hike over gentle hills. It was an easy hike, although some of the terrain was rocky and uneven, and we had to find a path through a couple of small streams. Not a problem for most, but some older folk were glad they had their hiking poles. I was glad I had my waterproof hiking shoes. The Preserve is open to the public on Saturdays from Feb - May, and then again in the fall. Check the website for access hours. You can hike on your own, or register for one of the docent-led hikes. Also, the road to access Deer Creek Hills is not paved, and there is a small stream you have to drive through to get to the hiking area, so a four-wheel drive is a good idea. Those without high-clearance vehicles parked their cars along the side of the road before the stream, and hiked to the trailhead.

I did get cancelled on a few times, I was at first annoyed, instant gratification junky, but then realized they have no control over the weather AND safety comes first. That earned my respect right there. We met at the site at 6 am, not 6:01 or 6:12, 6am or before. Temperature plays a huge role in height and duration of flight. On time and safety are expected and delivered. At 6 sharp the ride started with tip over training, safety, and a brief roll call and waiver check and explanation. Important stuff! The balloon is beautiful and the pilots wife makes sure there are plenty of pics, she's super sweet and helpful. Takeoff is a bit disorienting, part helicopter, part jump. Once you hit the sky though, it's amazing. It is such a great feeling to float. Tim has a great sense of humor and can tell a story with gusto... between bursts of fire into the balloon. I have no idea how high we were but cows were hard to make out, they were that small. The morning couldn't have been more perfect. The landing was a bit bumpy, our training came in handy. Jarring like an old truck indoors a rough road, easy. As we waited for the truck to come and get us Tim gave us a wee history lesson on ballooning, with a champagne toast. I've been smiling all day. Independent and local, experienced and a perfect way to fly. Highly recommended is an understatement.

The pilot is very skilled and knowledgeable, and had a ton of interesting stories about his hot air balloon experiences. His wife also came along and assisted with the proposal and took a bunch of great photos of me and my fiancée which was very appreciated. It was very apparent they enjoy what they do and that helped to add to the experience. I would highly recommended this for anyone trying to come up with a unique way to propose.

Look at the reviews of habitual tardiness whene customers are waiting in 90-100 degree heat. 30- 1 hour late w no call nor apologies. THEN, he will have YOU, the paying customer unload and setup while he finishes his Burger King. IMO, he should setup for his customers BEFORE they arrive and be there before customers as respect to having customers. If he is this way with people as I experienced while taking lessons there, what else will he lack? With me, he never gave back my unspent lesson $$$$. I lost money for lessons I never got. Just like the other reviewer. The other outfits in the Bay Area and Hollister are worth the travel. Hollister will spend 2 days w you and not keep moving the goalposts to keep you paying.

You'll also learn how to set up, inspect, and take down your glider. First, you'll sit down with the instructor (and his cool dog) for a "lecture" on wind and how planes and gliders move in it. Then, you'll team up to assemble and inspect your glider (I hated this part). After that, you get to do some "simulated" flying. The instructor hooks you up to your glider (which remains grounded) and you get to learn gliding terms and practice your steering before attempting to fly. From there, you climb up the side of a mountain to get your flight on. You'll be walking through some sharp weeds and cow dung, so watch your step. Before actually taking flight, you'll have to pick that heavy glider up and run down the hill with it. As you run, the wind will lift you and you'll be gliding! The instructor runs with you until you take off. From there, he'll yell instructions to you using that gliding lingo you learned during simulation. After a couple of hours of climbing and gliding you hike back down the hill to disassemble your glider and pack it onto the instructor's vehicle. The experience itself is excellent; getting to and from the site is what turned me off from going further with my lessons. The long stretch of winding, single-lane roads followed by some off-roads really sucked for me. I didn't particularly care for running through sharp weeds and cow dung either.

Its a really long drive from San Francisco, but if your planning a surprise date and want to really throw your loved one off, what better than paintball in the middle of nowhere! The owners are a riot, they themselves are worth the drive! I'm no pro when it comes to paint-ball, but apparently most fields don't allow rental guns to run on pre-purchased paint - Action Paintball does allow it, I was actually encouraged by the guy when talking on the phone them. Not only can you bring your own paint, but they also allow some guy to sell & rent higher grade paintball equipment in their parking lot! After a thorough discussion last night, we concluded that Action Paintball will receive 5-stars. Wow, we've got the Yelp bug bad - we actually had a thorough discussion planning our Yelp review on the drive home..

I honestly hadnt been paintballin in years and never on a course in the hills with thick trees. We drove up around 9:30, rented all the gear and got started around 10am. I was able to rent a gun, mask, belt for extra paintballs and a big bag of paintballs for $40. The first two games we got our royal ass kicked. Like the game was over in 5-10 minutes. I even got shot right between the eyes, didnt even know the guy was there. But as the games went along we found our groove and started to dominate. I never died the last 8 games and my buddies and I were working together as a finely tuned machine. Dont get me wrong, I did get hit a couple times in the arm(left a nice bruise), but the paintball didnt explode so I was able to continue. I enjoyed the different courses they had. Also enjoyed how some of the courses were out in the open and some were through the thick trees. After every two rounds you can walk to your truck and grab some water/snack. We didnt get done until a little after 4. So for $40 you get to play all day and rent equipment. That is a pretty good price for all day fun. I also recommend wearing camo of some sort because you can really blend in and either sneak up on people or have them walk right to you because they dont see you. Anyway, it was a kick ass time and we are already wanting to come back again. P.S. I was horrifically sore for a few days afterwards and my feet were killing me. Am I a wuss? Probably. But did I look tough in camo? HELL YES!!!
