Very rare that I leave a negative review but Rugged rental left my son and I stranded at the SLC airport. I had arranged for an after hours pickup for my scheduled 7:20 pm arrival. My flight was delayed about 30 minutes and when I called the after hours number as instructed no one picked up. I left a message for the on call person, but I never heard back. I called multiple times. Fortunately I was able to rent a car that i can use to head up the mountain, but at more than twice the cost. Needless to say I strongly advise against using Rugged. read more

We have been renting four wheel vehicles in Salt Lake since roughly 1992 and had a series of mishaps nearing disaster (once there was no vehicle at all for us!). BUT THEN WE FOUND RUGGED RENTAL. For roughly twenty years we have rented from them usually twice a year and everything has already gone perfectly. We used Rugged Rental - Layton location - to set up a rental for my family flying in from Texas. They were much more accommodating than the other rental companies. They allowed my sister & her husband to provide their insurance, DL info and credit card info before arriving, allowing us (local) to pick up the vehicle on Dec 23 (Sat) with full coverage. Only thing standing between a 4 star and a 5 star rating is the upgrade. At this point you're thinking, "But they upgraded you." They did, and the Dodge Journey was a great SUV with all the bells and whistles (including seats that over warmed my tush), but it wasn't what we ordered. I wanted my baby sister in a 4-wheel drive with snow tires; what they got was an all wheel drive with all season tires. Heck, I live here and was not comfortable driving it. When I asked about the tires, I was told we should be fine, just "be careful." Not a comforting response. Received a very sweet thank you email and a discount offer for our next rental. We would recommend them, we would just advise you to be very specific. read more

We had a great experience and highly recommend Rugged Rental. We rented a Jeep Rubicon for our trip to Yellowstone. The Jeep was ready when we got to Rugged Rental (a few steps from the front door, clean, fueled up, and low miles-less than 9,000), paperwork was a breeze, and we were driving north in a matter of minutes. Being off site of the airport, we were not sure how inconvenient the process would be to commute between Rugged Rental's location and the airport. Overall, it was probably quicker for us to rent from Rugged Rental than one of the large airport rental places because Rugged Rental was prepared and efficient. I had a great experience with Rugged Rentals. Having never visited Utah, it can be a little unnerving making reservations from the other side of the country. You HOPE that you are working with a reputable business and that the car you reserved is ready when you get off of a long flight. Even with the beauty of the internet, I can still get nervous with unfamiliar territory. This is where Yelp is immensely helpful. Bailey at Rugged was great every step of the way. I made my reservation online and then called to confirm. Once my trip got closer, I had a flight change which impacted my reservation. I called again and the process was easy. I appreciated that they were flexible and they seem to understand that traveling plans don't always go smoothly. Now about the car, I highly recommend the Dodge Charger. It was a blast zipping around canyons (at a safe speed, of course) and half the state of Utah. I think this is going to be my next car and they've sold me on the Plum Crazy color. The vehicle was very clean and there were no mechanical issues. I was a little nervous about returning it to the airport drop off lot and handing the keys to the shuttle driver but everything went fine. This was an easy company to work with and the transaction was seamless. My cost was the same as my quote, down to the penny. No hidden charges or fees. Rugged Rental provides a cooler, too, which also came in very handy with temps up here being crazy hot now. And upon returning the vehicle we were offered a free ride back to our downtown SLC hotel! Not your average car rental, and not only because I think they only rent vans and specialty vehicles but because of the ease of working with the staff and efficient pickup at airport. I rented a 15 passenger van months prior and had no issues. The staff was friendly and pickup at airport was efficient (you just need to find the pickup location first). The van needed more cargo room and Rugged helped out by offering to take out back row. On another trip a car rental place in Calgary wouldn't keep the back row in their rental place for us even though it was out of their own van and in their own facility. Sometimes business policies just baffle the heck out of me. This vehicle got us through the Grand Tetons, and Yellowstone National Park with no issues. Easy to drive, but you better know how to drive a long vehicle. Knowing how to back one up helps as well. I am from the city where there are way too many cars and space on streets would make you clench your fists over the steering wheel trying to get past on-coming cars but I've mastered city driving so if needed if I needed to drive the van sideways and up walls there would be no problem. Upon returning the vehicle we had a few miles over and they explained all the items and charges clearly including the charge for extra mileage. I personally have getting surprises on my billing statements as it throws my accounting off. Their facility is off property so the ride will take about 10-15 minutes. Vehicle was clean and operated well throughout the almost two weeks we had it rented for. The radio has a CD player but no USB connector, BUT has an earphone jack. What this means is if you bring an mini earphone jack for your iphone or ipod you can listen to your own music through the radio. Passenger door for our van was only on one side. There was the requisite cigarette lighter power jack, and one power jack for AC conversion. Great place and great staff. Best of all if you've been on rental car lines.. there was no line here! read more

This is the rental car company unicorn. Incredible breath of fresh air after so many bad rental experiences. Rugged had an actual person answering the phone, even on Sunday. It was no problem that our flights were delayed by two days (they didn't give the car to someone else to solve an issue on another rental). We got the actual car we booked - not even "or similar" and didn't get sold a cheap upgrade because they actually didn't have the car in stock. The after hours pick up shuttle, and before hours drop off shuttle both worked seamlessly. The car was clean and great for the winter conditions. And the value was outstanding. This company is great! I would definitely do business with them again. Even though the rental company is not at the airport itself, we waited less than 5 minutes for them to pick us up at the airport when we arrived and to take us back when we left. It was only a short drive to get to the company location. The paperwork process was very easy and by the time our paperwork was signed our SUV was already loaded with all our luggage. I called with a question about the car on a Sunday and even though they are not open Sundays, I left a message and someone called me back very promptly and answered my question. I'm glad we rented a 4WD car because there were a couple snow flurries while we stayed up in Park City and I had much more confidence driving with a capable SUV. I really appreciate that with this company they actually rent the car you want, and not the typical "or equivalent." Next time I'm in the area I will definitely rent from them again! read more

The price is less expensive than the typical places (Hertz, Enterprise, etc) even if using an online promo code. We rented a suburban for 5 days from the SLC airport location and drove from SLC to Ashton, ID (and even up to Yellowstone National Park). The suburban was brand new and super clean which was great as we were going to be in it for 4 hours the first day. The customer service exceeded expectations. They were friendly and accommodating - all you could ask for in a car rental place. When we returned the vehicle we were immediately shuttled back to the airport. It went so smooth! read more

To my great surprise we experienced some of the best service we have ever had a car rental facility. The pick-up van was there when we arrived and insisted in lifting all the luggage into the van. Then at the rental location (about 10 minutes out of town) everything was in order and the staff was extremely helpful. Again the staff insisted we stay inside and keep warm while they loaded all of our luggage into our car. Similar experience on the return ride back. A friend and I rented Jeep Cherokees from Rugged Rental for a Utah road trip over spring break. My friend got upgraded to a Jeep Wrangler for free and I got a Cherokee as booked. Both vehicles were clean and with low miles on them. Both performed flawlessly over the duration of the one week trip. The booking experience was simple and so was the drop-off, even though they were off-hours. The cars were quite dirty after the trip, but no cleaning charges were levied. I'd forgotten my prescription sunglasses in the car, which are really expensive to replace. Rugged found the sunglasses once the car was back in from rental and shipped it over to me!
