By far my favorite sandwich shop in Boston. I can eat an Italian sub every day for the rest of my life, and it could easily be the one from Ruggerio's. Pizza and fries are good too, I appreciate the employees, they're always friendly and helpful. It has a nice local pizza shop feel. The corner store aspect of it is just about what you'd expect from a corner store, but I don't buy things from there often. 10/10 read more

You would never expect to find a good selection of craft beer at a random corner bodega with a fast food counter- but Ruggiero's will surprise and delight you in that way. It's a solid one-stop shop for most occasions- aside from beer/wine/liquor, they sell staples- TP, milk, crackers, soup cans-, plus speciality stuff- UK chocolate, Latin snack mixes-, plus lotto tickets, plus a full restaurant's worth of subs/pizza/fried stuff (and I can say that their fries are surprisingly decent). It's not a full grocery store (why oh why don't we have one in south JP?!) and I wouldn't want to fully rely on Ruggiero's to live, but it does well in a pinch plus is somewhere I actively seek out specifically for my booze needs. And I hear they deliver, which is an extra bonus. read more

I lived in JP for over 25 years and remember the original owners although some of the brothers weren't that friendly the pizza was good. The new owners can't even make french fries pizza or a sub. Sometimes you'll get a good sub from some of the staff that have worked there before but overall it's bad and the new owners are not friendly. It's a disappointment read more

Wine, beer, gummies, candy, Asian snacks, trail mix, Caribbean dried fruit, British candy bars, lottery, frozen food, chef boy ar dee and beyond. Got an Italian sub here that was ridiculously good. Straightforward and not fancy, but the guy cut the cold cuts fresh & toasted the sub. Just an excellent sub. Really impressed! read more

This is our neighborhood bodega. There is a great beer selection, including a lot of local breweries. Despite its quite unassuming presence, somehow, the grill is always excellent for a surprisingly wide range of items (pizza, subs). The owners are really nice, as well. This is the worst store in Boston. The food counter is slow; the sandwiches are bland; the grocery selection is weird and inconsistent. Friends report having *repeatedly* bought beer here only to find that it was already skunked. This is the type of place that will charge you $1.29 for a single, shriveled green bell pepper. A gallon of milk goes for a princely $4.79. And that's not atypical. Everything is overpriced. They know that by having a convenient location with limited competition, they're going to get a fairly steady stream of business no matter what. So they treat customers with undisguised contempt. Silent, surly, and sour-faced, the counter-guy evinces a toxic misery that can only be described as highly contagious. No, wait, it can also be described as vaguely threatening. It's as if you accidentally walked in on a room full of thieves who are in the middle of somberly dividing up their loot: your presence does not amuse them. Here is why Ruggiero's is awesome: February 2008, freakin' freezing out, icy, and snowing, out of wine/booze. I make a phone call and less than an hour later the following shows up on my doorstep: 1 six pack of El Presidente; 1 six back of Magners; 1 bottle of red wine; a large order of mozzarella sticks; and a package of strawberry flavored pop rocks. Why Ruggiero's is bad: The sell do-rags on the counter and my ridiculous husband thinks it's okay to purchase this and wear it. At least the guy behind the counter made fun of him for it. read more

This place is so unbelievably awful, it's freaking amazing. First off, it advertises as a "grocery store" which I imagine would be an apt description if you were 16 and shopping for groceries while your parents were gone for the weekend. The selection of crap is baffling, and they outdo any 7-11 I've ever seen. Candy. Beefaroni. Microwavable EVERYTHING. Soda. Booze. Smokes. And let's not forget car repair. Where's the motor oil? Shelved between the white wine and the Laffy Taffy, of course! The "restaurant" section of this store is even weirder. Everyone I've ever interacted with is gruff--but in a lovable, old hound dog sorta way. I can't say they serve great food, but a slice o' pizza pie does in a pinch. Their general menu looks nauseating, and they have something called a "Burger Basket" which comes with a burger, cole slaw, french fries AND onion rings. No joke, all heart attack. I cry a little for the children I see eating in there. And for you health nuts? Don't worry--a hand-scrawled sign in the window proudly proclaims that Ruggiero's now serves*Egg Beaters*. I'm amazed they haven't put Harvest out of business. Did I mention they deliver? Not just food--everything in their store. I'll never leave home for Beefaroni again. read more

Five stars for being the strangest place on earth. The employees are equal parts hostile and friendly. The store sells crappy groceries and surprisingly good food. My most recommended item is the cheese steak. Trust me. As many others have mentioned, they will deliver anything in the store to you. Ruggiero's scares the crap out of me. My boyfriend loves this place. Last week he ordered beer, smokes, and three decks of cards for his weekly poker game. But being him, he requested "only red decks of cards" and Ruggiero's delivered on that. They carry beer, a rather mediocre selection of wine (Red Tail the highest pedigree), and all the candy one can eat. The candy hearkens back to childhood--from Boston Baked Beans to Sugar Daddies to Bit o' Honeys, Ruggie's has 'em! More peculiarly is the restaurant! Yes, Ruggiero's offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. They even have specials! I have never seen the restaurant section bustling, so I don't know what it's all about. I know they have a fried chicken plate which strikes me as tempting, but not that tempting if you know what I mean. Whoever said Ruggiero's was magical was right. They carry glass bottles of coke like in the old general store days, and even offer to pop the top for you. It's always the same assortment of men working the counter - the Brothers Ruggiero as I prefer to call them - and they all look the same but have vastly different personalities. Yet they all get kind of fed up when people stand at the counter and buy scratch tickets for half and hour. This store is kind of like that movie A River Runs Through It - you know, with Brad Pitt and fly fishing or something like that. But it has brothers, is my point. read more

Ruggiero's is a restaurant/convenient store/liquor store that delivers anything. It's Pea Pod extreme delivery before there was a Pea Pod! It's Better than 7-Eleven! It's kinda crappy and kinda magical! "We deliver anything we sell." That's right folks; you can get Magic Hat, toilet paper, Sour Creme, pork chips, batteries, maxi pads, Apple Jacks, Jack Daniels, and a Meatball sub, Brillo pads,Tylenol, pancake mix, a calling card, plastic baggies of Swedish fish, among other things, delivered to your door. I have no car, and live on the other side of the tracks and this convenient store is replacing the perfect, pansy City Feed for me. The workers are tough, the customers are tough, the pizza, well, it's a little tough. But they have a decent meatball sub. But hey what's up with no eggplant parm, my personal fav sloppy stuff? Also, they sooo don't carry Nutrional Yeast, tamari paste, Brown Cow yogourt, or local produce. But Ruggiero's will be saving my ass with desperate staples, booze, and treats some come winter time. When I am sick Ruggieros will be that Italian uncle that stops by with a calzone and a ginger ale. When I need stuff for the house, but cannot bike to Stop and Shop or Harvest or score a ride, I can stumble down the block. When I am prepping for a party I can parlay over here before Green Street T. When I am cold and alone, I can order a can of black olives and human contact to be delievered to my door for a small fee. PS. There is a $10 credit card minimum. PS. Better know the Red Sox score dude. PS. The food and liquor is overpriced. PS. Bring your crew but remember the Bo-Po is just down the street. PS. For the convenience store, the prices are way too high, especially when compared with the Green Street market and the Latin Market nearby, Those who work there are pretty rude and curt. The only reason I go here is if the other locations nearby are closed. For the food, Egelston House of Pizza is much better, as are other places which deliver. Food is way too greasy here. read more

I have never set foot in this store, I only use it for delivery, so I can't comment on the counter service or the majority of the foods they make on site BUT...as far as delivery goes, Ruggiero's is the bomb. I've ordered delivery of every kind of random grocery you can imagine from this place, countless bottles of booze, and the occasional tuna melt (crazy greasy but delicious in an indulgent, comfort food sort of way) and 30-45mins later the friendliest of delivery guys is on my doorstep and my prayers are answered without ever having to leave the comfort of my own home! The only people I can imagine that would give this place more than 1 star must be sedentary hard-core drinkers who appreciate Ruggieros alcohol delivery service. This place is AWFUL! It should be blown up and put out its misery. The staff is miserbale and the prices are outrageous. This store's got plenty in the way of candy, junk-food, and cigarettes, but if your looking for something healthy and reasonably priced, you can forget it. Such a shame as this place is open late and is within walking distance of the Green Street MBTA station. Considering how much Boston presently lacks for good transit and especially transit-oriented development in the outlying neighborhhods, the city should consider passing a law banning sleazy stores such as Ruggieros that prey upon the poor and the ignorant from being located within a half mile of a subway or Green line station. read more

Eh... I go here way to often. 3 or 4 times per week. Mostly for overpriced beer, sometimes for their pizza, which can be either great or nasty, why the inconsistency?? it's just friggin pizza! Ruggieros which i have only till recently realized it's not spelled or pronounced ruggerIos, is a combination convenience store/liquor mart/pizza parlor which is essential in this neighborhood considering there are no supermarkets. But boy...are they taking advantage of that!! I know that part of a convenience store is high prices because it's more "convenient" than schlepping to a supermarket, and waiting in long lines, but c'mon guys...$6.99 for a box of elios! WTF! 5.99 for ben and jerry's ice-cream. it's like make believe prices in la la land. The beer and liquor prices are also sky high, averaging $5 more than at a liquor store. But yet, I still come here, all the time. Ruggieros delivers everything it sells, for you guessed it...an exorbitant delivery fee, but since the only people who go to this place live within 3 blocks, i doubt they are cashing in on deliveries, but it's still good to know. I had a pretty good burger and fries there last week, but not worth the $8 they got. They sell fried dough! it's kind of like a glorified food shack from revere beach, but I wouldnt try the fried clams :( The whole place is painted bright red, on the outside and inside. Neon signs, a slush puppy machine, hot nuts, scratch tickets, booze, sometimes good/sometimes bad pizza, penny candy in dime bags, empty coors duffel bags with the beer removed that were part of a promotional deal...for sale! also promotional desarano high ball glasses...for sale! for some reason, the owner thinks people want to pay top dollar for crap that was at one time, intended to be a freebie. ??? this place is awesomely bad. I say this because you really don't want to come here, yet something keeps drawing you back. the "grocery" selection isn't anything special, in fact its corner store junk food and other things you don't really need. surprise surprise! the have all the essentials though, booze, smokes, munchies. My friend bought her first legal alcohol here the day she turned 21 and they gave her a free mini bottle of gold shloger, awesome. the diner there is a heart attack on a stick. i dont think you can get anything healthy there. although the awesome part is you can get whatever you want at any time of the day. the only thing i ever get there is the BLT, and i swear they add extra grease on there somehow, other than the bacon. But the people that work there are pretty nice, in an old, i feel bad for you kinda way. It's always interesting to go in there if you need something to be confused about for a while. read more

They have one side that is like a mini supermarket with staples such as milk, eggs, bread, beer, wine, paper plates, batteries, etc. Then they have kitchen side with fantastic pizza, great subs and sandwiches, and excellent food in general. Great alcohol selection for a convenience store. I was SO happy to find my favorite cheap wine (House, Steak House, etc) from my old days in Seattle. Unfortunately, no one in the store did much to stop the violent shouting and harassment that one of their employees subjected me to. They earned the fourth star by surprising the hell out of me by having sour cream for sale when I ducked in on the way back from the T yesterday. Granted, it was the only container in the fridge, cost $4, and looked like it had survived a rough trip, but the use-by date was a month away, and having eaten it with rice & beans last night, I can confirm that I am not dead. All other positive commentary mentioned in other reviews is dead-on. They will deliver anything. Their beer prices aren't awful--a little more than Blanchard's, but much more convenient. The innate sketchiness of the place is offset by the fact that the police station is fifteen feet away. read more

You can get a BLT here at 9am. Basically, you can get almost any sandwich here at 9am. I used to work a 5am- 9am shift and loved being able to come here and get something other than breakfast food (after all, my body thought it was lunchtime). They're also a decent place to find drinkable wine w/o having to go all the way to Blanchards (it's a pretty basic selection... Yellow Tail and the like). Ruggiero's is pretty much heaven on Earth. Heaven if you enjoy good pizza and sandwiches, beer, and the strangest people you'll ever see. They have Keno on a TV so there are always people sitting in the little booths playing Keno, and the bums like to play scratch-its by the register. There's even a recycling box labeled "Losing Lotto Tickets." The customer service consists of a glare and no more than 5 words. But it's reliable, convenient, and they deliver everything in the store. Yes, if they sell it, they deliver it. Two or three times a year, usually in the winter, there is nothing more important than beer and pizza delivery. And when that moment arrives, Ruggiero's will be there for you. In the meantime, go for the products, and enjoy the ambiance. No one will mess with you, and it's really perfectly safe. There's even a police station next door, and cops make up much of the customer base. Make the trip, or even better, pick up the phone. read more

To second the high beer prices, they also charge $10 for a six-pack of Sam Adams lager. Really? Isn't the brewery like a few blocks from you? Another outrageous price I saw while being price-raped (they don't mark the beer prices and then the guy just announces the prices at the counter) were the Clif granola bars for $2.99 each. Most places sell these for, oh I don't know, $1 to $1.50 -- That's a nearly 200% mark-up. This place sucks and I hate having it so close to where I live. Someone needs to open an actual convenience store near this place to put them out of business, or we can all just avoid them like the gouging-plague that they are. read more

Called them tried asking them simple questions about some items, the employee was unable to understand me and tried putting me on the phone with three different people. Finally after a 15 minute phone call to order 2 packs of beer they told me it was on the way the driver ha a couple more stops. Get another call from the Ruggerios land line claiming that he was the driver and couldn't find his way and wouldn't be coming. Told him I love literally 1.3 miles away. I gotta say this place is truly amazing, a hidden gem if you may. although the ambience and atmosphere of the place isn't anything amazing or superb it is standard and cozy, but nonetheless to my liking. Now what sold me about this place is the service there, it was phenomenal, the lady serving me was extremely kind, energetic, and humorous. Then on top of that the food there was nothing short of divine. To be honest i didn't expect the food to be so superb I was simply starving and ready to eat anything that i could lay my hands on, it definitely passed my expectations. it was pretty basic price for subs and such, but the portion and taste was amazing.
