City Feed is a grocery store that doubles as a pretty solid bakery. The grocery store side is pretty expensive, but the bakery side is on par with others spots in the area. I grabbed an iced latte here today and the barista did a good job with it, the flavor was well-balanced. I also got an egg, bacon, and cheese bagel which took a bit but turned out to be a great snack. The ambiance is pretty relaxed, there are bar seats looking out onto the streets. I avoided this place for the longest time because of the reviews, but after trying every milk available at my usually grocery store and finding them all pretty nasty, I came here. Well, i haven't been back to those other stores for much of anything since xD The prices are higher than you can see at a box store, but really **not significantly** if you are usually shopping organic / small batch / local products, and their selection in that regard is pretty stellar. It reminds me of what WF used to be back in the day, just much, much smaller. I have bought so many things there I never would have found elsewhere that have become staples. Pita bread, ice cream, breakfast meats, teas, chocolate, milk (of course), (surprisingly) great canned foods, marshmallows, niche snacks, APPLES, fair trade bananas that are the best I've had. The staff on the evening I went was friendly and I was happy to see a varied selection of Coffee (including George Howell Terrier). This is an AMAZING little neighborhood grocery store that focuses on fair trade, local, and organic / non GMO products. And as a bonus, they have a little deli and cafe (which makes a very tasty breakfast sandwich, if you're passing by). I love that I can get the best quality eggs, milk, snacks, and pantry items around (that I've never seen elsewhere!) for prices that are basically what I would pay somewhere like Roche for MUCH LOWER quality. Also, and this is amazing, they have a community fridge at that back of the store that gets very consistent traffic from donations and community members! I've been going here for the last 15 years and absolutely adore this JP neighborhood spot. I always get the number 12 roast beef untoasted and a sticky bun and a few groceries like some local cheese or a loaf of bread. The sandwich prices are a bit steep but I enjoy the fact that they use iggy bread and partner with local bakeries. The actual groceries and produce are on the steeper end with okay quality, I honestly think you'd get more for your buck at the Whole Foods down the street. I only came here today because Fiores doesn't open until 10. It wasn't even busy and the woman taking my order probably doesn't like working with customers. I'll never understand why people who don't like to show a modicum of enthusiasm for customers, work in jobs working with customers. Bare minimum effort on her part. My experience today was hardly different from my experience five or six years ago. Is this the same crew? Or is this a whole new fresh crowd of people who don't want to work here? What was once a beloved local institution has become an overpriced, rude embarrassment to the Jamaica Plain community. City Feed and Supply's downward spiral can be traced directly to the appalling attitudes and behavior of some of its staff, particularly the bald, inconsiderate sandwich maker who flicks his cigarette butts around the surrounding neighborhood like it's an ashtray. This grown man's shocking lack of respect for the very community that supports his employer is an insult to every resident who has to put up with his littering. Since the employees unionized, service has plummeted as a cavalier attitude of indifference has taken over. And the prices? They've skyrocketed to laughable highs. I had no issue with a small premium to support local business, but when it's paired with poor attitudes and disrespect of the neighborhood, it's one I can no longer support It pains me to denounce a place I used to frequent and support, but City Feed has forced my hand. With its alienating prices, compromised service, and utter disdain for the community, I can no longer spend my hard-earned money there. I hope the management wakes up, reinstills some pride and respect, and rehabilitates this fallen neighborhood gem before it's too late. Horrible customer service. I was waiting in line for 10 minutes, and the manger skipped me inline and served a white lady instead of me because I am Mexican even though he made eye contact with me several times the 10 minutes I was waiting so I could place my order. When I called him out on it he glared at me and said " GET TO THE FUCKING LINE KID". So I Did so taking the higher road. This place used to be great but after not being in JP for 5 years it has really gone down hill. My partner and I ordered sandwiches today- I had the smoked turkey and he had the salmon sandwich on baguette. My sandwich had a small hair in it and some of the lettuce was browned. His sandwich came out as the very end of the baguette and when he complained they said the reason was that he didn't order it on a bagel and that's the way it came out. When we came by last week, the sandwich was two times larger, so I'm not sure what that's about...the grocery store is also way over priced. Disappointing- this place used to be awesome. read more

Cute hipster feel inside. I love their sustainable approach with their fair trade, local, and environmentally friendly products. I got the Smoked turkey sandwich. Everything there looked delicious. The sandwich was great and I'd get it again, but I did think the turkey ratio was way too low. I feel like I could have asked for double turkey and that would have just been a normal amount. Come on guys, we need our protein! Haha. Other than that the pesto sauce in the sandwich was to die for. I would consider buying this separately if they sold it! Also the bread was very fresh and delicious. I'm a firm believer that the bread is the most important part of the sandwich and should be chosen carefully... they succeed. TL;DR: great local crunchy/granola grocery spot. You pay more but for fresh/local ingredients that you often can't find elsewhere. Over the past year and change of living in Jamaica Plain I've become something of a regular at City Feed. Full disclosure up front, it's more expensive that most grocery places but they carry a nice variety of fresh, local, and fair trade options. I've had sandwiches and coffees here (pre-covid, I don't believe these are available right now) and they're always good but I prefer Espresso Yourself for my coffee and Real Deal for my sandos. Nothing against City Feed, just personal preference and I like to spread out my local $$ spend. I mostly rely on City Feed as a specialty grocery spot. Some of my favorites I recommend from City Feed: (1) The fresh meat fridge - you can really taste the difference of fresh, local meat. In particular I love getting the bone in chicken thighs and roasting with some very basic herbs/spices. It's just really good chicken. They also frequently carry duck breasts that are incredible. (2) Fish options - in the summer I prefer the farmers market, but during colder months you can almost always get a nice piece of fresh salmon or cod here. I also love the salmon burgers they have in the freezer section. (3) Local milk, usually Thatcher Farms - yes it's more expensive but it really is that much more delicious than a gallon of Hood. Plus they take back the glass bottles and return your deposit so I just rotate through and get to minimize my plastic waste. (4) Lake Champlain Chocolates - most major chocolate brands (Herseys, Mars, etc.) are not child/slave labor free. I'm not being dramatic, Google it - Washington Post did a good piece on it a few years back. LC chocolates are super delicious and City Feed always carries a rotating seasonal offering. (5) Cat grass - it's literally just some non-toxic grass for your cat to monch on and my little furball loves it. It dies after a month or so but it's not super expensive so I don't mind getting it as a treat for him occasionally, especially in the winter when he can't go outside. Note: some cats vomit when they eat grass so keep an eye on your furbaby if you try it for the first time. (6) Mole Hill taper candles - I have never seen taper candles burn this evenly. I've gone through several sticks in different colors and never a single drip down the sides. They're perfect. I'm pretty sure you can buy them at the JP Whole Foods too. The staff is typically friendly and helpful and I've even been able to call ahead and have them hold specific ingredients for me that I've had trouble finding elsewhere (dried porcini mushrooms to be specific). Sandwiches are good but the service is really slow - waited over 30 minutes for two sandwiches. Granted, I came on a Saturday afternoon, but I thought I'd be safe at 2:30. I ordered the Big K Tuna and the Turkey/Brie sandwiches. Both were great, but the Big K Tuna was stellar - think of a tuna melt, but the tuna salad is mixed with really great flavors (onions, capers, etc). The final straw came the other day when I needed a head of green cabbage...perhaps the cheapest vegetable available anywhere in the grocery universe. City Feed was charging $9.00 for a head of cabbage. Yup, NINE DOLLARS! I asked the clerk to double check thinking the $2.98 was per head, which would be OK-ish for conventional green cabbage, but it was per pound. A 3 lb cabbage was $9.00. Seriously? Even if I took the bus to Whole Foods and back, that head of cabbage would be cheaper ( and no doubt fresher). Talk about gouging. Done. Done. Done. read more

I love City Feed in theory- it should hit all the notes for me (local, organic, homemade, unique, etc.). But in reality, it's a little uneven, a little scattered, a little overpriced. On the cafe side, I like their tasty and imaginative coffee/tea/lemonade drink menu (try the mojito limeade in the summer), but I've also waited 25 minutes for a procuitto and moz sandwich during a non-busy time. On the grocery side, I love their local beer selection and commitment to other local purveyors, but sometimes their prices are a bit crazy and items are a bit ridiculously gourmet when all I need/want/can afford is basic (why oh why doesn't JP have an actual grocery store on either the Centre Street or Washington Street corridor???). Here's the thing--local businesses are not always good. This place has traded on the whole "support local business" thing for as long as they've been open, but there's really no reason to support them. The last time I went here, I waited, no joke, 30 minutes for a cold sandwich. If you sell sandwiches and you can't put a cold one together in a half an hour, it's time to close up shop. If this were an unusual occurrence, I'd chalk it up to a bad day. But this kind of service disaster is the rule here. I guess if you are feeling masochistic, you could pay twice as much for groceries as you do at Whole Foods (!) half a mile away. Or you could buy beer for about a 20% premium over what you'd pay at Blanchard's 2 blocks away. It's been years, and these folks just haven't figured out how to run a business.
