We shop there for our groceries every week. They have all the essential produce, they make great sandwiches and friendly service.

I shop at City Feed frequently, both this one (called "Little City Feed") and the larger one (called "Big City Feed") on Centre St in Jamaica Plain. I buy groceries and pastries here, but haven't yet tried their made-to-order drinks or sandwiches. I love that they discount their day-old pastries and bagels by 30%, which are still quite yummy even a day later. I'm a big fan of their chocolate croissants, blueberry muffins, and chocolate chip cookies. The folks working at City Feed are always friendly. I also appreciate that they have a customer rewards program, so I just type in my phone number at checkout and can earn $5 off my purchase! I like shopping here whenever I can, instead of a big chain like the nearby Stop & Shop or Whole Foods. read more

I got the $10.99 Smoked Salmon on a bagel sandwich. There was on skinny piece of smoked salmon and a hell of a lot of cream cheese on the bagel with lots of capers and a little onion. Definitely not worth $10.99 for a bagel with cream cheese. Complete ripoff. Go elsewhere in JP. Everything was too expensive for the quality of the food. read more

How I've missed the city feed deli... I lived in Jamaica Plain for 12 years and the turkey sandwich was always a special treat. Having been gone 4 years this treat was even more special. The sandwich is a bit expensive for its size but it is made with the best ingredients and the taste is so good. You can buy them freshly made or check the fridge in the back for premades. They give a discount for premades that are a day old. The convenience store always had something interesting to try too and I always appreciated the community bulletin board when I was a local. Very much enjoyed my sandwich and walk down memory lane. read more

Spent far too long waiting to get a latte with burnt milk because the the guy didn't pay attention while frothing.. He also moved like molasses going up hill and was condescending and not knowledgeable when asked a question def not a place id order from again if the same guy was there when I walked in. The coffee is exceptional but the service is frustrating. The shop sells some high quality groceries, but it's better known for it's sandwiches and coffee. The problem is that because of how the shelves are situated and that there is more than one cash register, it can be confusing on where to get in line to order. On my most recent visit, I apparently chose poorly because I witnessed the cashier take orders from three people who walked in after me. If you have 30 minutes to stand around awkwardly before ordering your coffee, I recommend this place. read more

I am completely SPOILED that my little corner store a block from my house is City Feed. Obviously it's selection isn't huge, but it does have the basics! Major plus that everything is local and usually organic. Not only does it function as corner store, but it also is a small coffee shop AND deli. Honestly, how perfect is this place?! I stopped and grabbed a decent chai latte and scone on my way home last night. So easy and so local, I will def be back to try and sandwhich soon. read more

City Feed is somehow synonymous with JP. The space on Centre street is fairly large for a small grocery-like store, and well-stocked. That said, expect to pay a fairly high premium on your organically-raised, locally-sourced, hand-crafted everything. Think of the prices less like going to a grocery store and more like a year-round farmer's market. Groceries aside, most of my money at City Feed goes to their beverages (shout out to my absolute favorite, the "Kick in the Face") and to their sandwiches (proscuitto sandwich, you know I love you the most). Tip: If you're hoping to get a bunch of sandwiches, call ahead and avoid the wait! Pro tip: Make sure you call the correct City Feed -- the one on Centre is the main one, the one on Boylston (aka "Little Feed") is the offshoot. I felt very comfortable buying individually wrapped bagels until today when bagels were picked up with tissue and dropped in a small brown paper bag as pre-covid 19. We can't forgot cashier is handling money back and forth and handing the small brown paper bags back to the customers. Food that can't be cooked or that you can't peel should be individually wrapped to avoid contamination. read more

Consistently slow service for sandwiches. This existed pre-covid and is nothing new though I am sure they want to attribute. After waiting over 15 minutes with no one in the store when I ordered, I asked about my order. I was told another 5 minutes. After another 10 minutes with people in the store after me now getting their orders I asked for them to check. They said the only thing they could do was give me my money back and explained there's a hot queue and a cold queue. When I told them I was in the cold queue, they shrugged. I got in line to get my money back. Surprise, surprise, the order then came out. No apologies, nothing. Again, nothing new. I won't be back. My advice, is pre-order by phone and hope. read more

Their coffee is like gasoline...in a good way. It'll get you zipped up for the morning. However, the employees are less than pleasant. They move so slowly and act in a snobby manner. I've said thank you multiple times as I've left and heard nothing in response and even had someone get visibly annoyed when I asked for more ice in my iced coffee. I'm close by and want to give them money, I just wish they'd put a little more care into what they do. read more

I was craving a speciality type sandwich (instead of a run of the mill sub) to bring on a picnic to Jamaica pond. I ordered the smoked turkey sandwich (#1) on a baguette. The employees were friendly and I enjoyed walking around the store and picking out some treats for our picnic as I waited. The sandwich was very flavorful, fresh and well balanced. I took off one star since it did take about 25 mins to make the sandwich- next time I will call ahead. read more

This review is primarily on the customer service of this establishment. July 1 at 7 PM the tall Caucasian with bald hair and dangly silver earrings was very rude to us buying customers. He made zero eye contact with us at the counter. We asked if he would be able to exchange our dollar for four quarters as we went to pay. After he said yes, he said his drawer was low on quarters and he couldn't do it. There were two jars on the counter full of quarters in which we asked to just exchange from the cup. He proceeded to tell us we can't take money out of the cup as it is "illegal." We asked what he meant by that but he dismissed us and moved on to the next customer before we were even away from the counter. I asked if he could do it for us if it was "illegal" for us to do it and he ignored me. I asked him point blank "are you ignoring me?" And he said "hold on" and moved on to his next customer. I was in disbelief and was very close to returning every single item I bought. I haven't encountered customer service this bad in a long time. City Feed, you can do better. read more

Years ago, after stopping by the Little Feed (then the only Feed) to pick up some ice cream on the way to dinner with friends, I decided that if JP could support a store like this, then I should move there. So a few months later I moved from a downtown rental to a place in JP, very close to the Boylston store. It has become, as one of my friends puts it, my extended refrigerator. I go there 4-6x a week. During the pandemic, I've also ordered regular deliveries from the Big Feed. For someone without a car, these deliveries have been a lifeline. My favorites include the awesome turkey sandwich (a gourmet treat), bags of Equal Exchange coffee, and breakfast pastries from the display case. I buy most of my food from CF, and during this pandemic I've been learning how to cook, using mainly ingredients purchased there and from the Big Feed. This is my favorite business in Boston. The food and drink are of high quality, and I always enjoy chatting with the folks behind the counter. It's a regular part of my experience of living here. read more

I've stopped in here a few times and really enjoy the food/drinks. Pastries from Danish Pastry House as well as Iggy's are delicious- I'm partial to the apple bear claw and the almond croissant. I'm not a coffee drinker, but CF&S definitely makes the best chai latte I've had in JP because (I'm pretty sure) they use a chai concentrate instead of a teabag. They only lose a star because the staff is less than friendly. On my most recent visit, I was not greeted, despite being the only one there, and then the woman behind the counter never once looked at me while taking my order and barely spoke. I've been a longtime supporter of this establishment for many years, and today is the day I vow to never set foot in this place again. I approached the counter to place my order and was ignored. Seconds later, another customer walks in, and the barista decides to take his order first. I've always been one to give establishments the benefit of the doubt, but I'm certain the oversight was very much deliberate. It's also worth noting that the other customer was white and was treated with kindness, while the barista just mumbled to me a curt "here you go" under her breath as she handed me her latte. I don't know what I've done to be treated so unfairly by these people, but today's incident proves that racial discrimination exists even in "progressive" Jamaica Plain. Much love for their sandwiches and bagels. And I feel good about supporting a locally owned/run business. Now for the complaints: As someone else said, the employees "can't" toast sandwiches. What's with that? I asked for my bagel toasted and they said they couldn't. I didn't know if it was because the toaster was broken or they didn't have one or they didn't trust the employees to work the thing. I just think it's odd that they use the term "can't". Not "we DON'T toast anything", but "we CAN'T toast anything." Like they would if they could, but they just CANNOT. Someone else complained that they don't take plastic for under $10. I think that this is a sound policy but I'm wondering if they may have changed it since your review because I was in there last weekend and four people in front of me were paying with plastic. Contrary to what a particular Visa ad currently running during Pats games would have you believe, using a credit card slows down the purchasing process. It doesn't speed it up. Call me old fashioned, but I liked it when coffee places poured your coffee and put the cream and sugar in it for you. But that's just me. I don't like how the line extends to exactly where you're walking in. So you're greeted by people standing there, growing more impatient with every person who tries to pay for their untoasted bagel with a credit card in front of them. Then it's a scramble to get your coffee through all the people. I have yet to be there when I haven't said "Excuse me" at least three times. Luckily everyone expects this so they're mostly friendly when they have to get out of your way. read more

I might be the only person in the world who hates this place! I have gotten fresh made sandwiches here three times now. When I eat the sandwiches I think, "ok, this is a good sandwich!" but it never fails, about 1/2 hour later I get really sick. I have had 3 different kinds of sandwiches on three different weeks and this happened every time. I also thought the service was a little snotty and slow. I never thought the day would come that I'd actually be happy to see a Whole Foods in my area. It kills me to say it, but it's true. I hate City Feed so much that when I walk in (for lack of other options), a small part of my soul dies. The only reason I give it a second star is because their sandwiches are in fact delicious, though frankly, NOT worth the ludicrous wait. But I'll give credit where due. And this is just about the only place in the store where credit is due. City Feed essentially fulfills every bad stereotype people have about the local, organic food movement, and manages to do so all under one terrifically inconvenient roof. It's outrageously expensive ($6.99 a lb. for bell peppers?) the absurdly over-priced produce always looks wilted, browning, and at very least questionable at best, there's very little selection (though it may be decent for specific diets such as gluten-free or vegan--I don't know because I don't seek this out), and the service is abysmally slow, as noted by numerous other posts here. And I'm sorry, but the poor quality produce is not a factor of "not spraying the tomatoes with false coloring." When I go to the farmers market around the corner when it's in season, the quality is excellent, and the produce looks beautiful. When I moved to JP in 2008, I was really looking forward to this place, and wanted so badly to love it. I like the idea of buying local and organic, and supporting a smaller local business, and am even willing to pay more for it. But not this much more. And certainly not when the price so dramatically outweighs the quality and benefit. Quite honestly, you're better off stopping by the farmer's market when it's in season (and if your schedule allows), and/or otherwise going down the street to the dreaded, and locally-hated Whole Foods. God, I can't believe I'm writing that. But unfortunately, it's true. I hated the idea of Whole Foods until I experienced City Feed. For better sandwiches and service: Canto 6 at the corner of Washington and Green (not the same area, granted, but much more pleasant, and phenomenal sandwiches, to say nothing of their insane baked goods). For better produce: Whole Foods. Sorry, but it's true. If you want organic produce (not necessarily local) that is actually good, not wilted, and with a much better selection, and the farmer's market is out of season or inconvenient, this is honestly your best bet. read more

My apologies- my prior review was for the City Feed on Centre Street which definitely prefer to this location. The one on Boylston is the original. I went there for the first time today, And I have to say that they need to work on a few things: 1- employees, not the most polite. Not rude at all, but absolutely not pleasant. Sorta got a snobby, slow, I'm too good for you vibe going on. And for such a tiny place- they should know that this does not go unnoticed. 2- cleanliness, I know that this one is older, but it needs to be cleaned up a bit. Smells sorta funky and is dingy. For what they're charging for sandwiches- there's no excuse for that. 3- don't offer hot or pressed sandwiches. Kinda stinks. I am used to the Centre Street one so when I asked to modify my sandwich the guy rolled his eyes at me. read more

I'll give them that the concept is really cool and the food is pretty fresh and good. However, I wanna give them a few pointers. Lets get some more seating. If you're gunna have coffee and sell food why not make it a little more comfortable to sit around and enjoy it. I hated standing up and eating my sandwich at the window sill. Mmmmm. Hippie Sandwiches, Good. In need of some vittles for the bus ride back to NYC, we stopped at City Feed for a couple of sandwiches and were pretty pleased. We got number 1 and number 12 from the menu. I can vouch for number 1. There was plenty of turkey (which was real turkey and not some compilation of birds or related species) and the cheese was nice, thick and uneven (good sign that it is fresh). They grainy bread was substantial and showed no signs of sogginess from the mayo. My girlfriend wore a happy face as she tore into her roast beef like a little velociraptor. The store was folksy (folksy charming, not folksy al a Sarah Palin) and there were plenty of organic and healthy options. This is definitely a place where I would stop again. read more

I like! Mostly. They have a decent assortment of everyday needs including some odds and ends. A choice between Grade A Maple Syrup and Grade B Maple syrup, for your Organic Whole Wheat Pancakes. You can buy individual servings of lox for the Organic Bagels and Soy Cream Cheese. You pay more for all the goodness, but it's within walking distance from home and that makes all the difference sometimes. They have a great assortment of sandwiches if you don't mind waiting for them. The staff are pretty nice, patient and actually try to be helpful. They're not the fastest moving peep on the block, but you have to remember where they are working. They aren't as slow as a Hawaiian road crew, trust me, if you think the Dig is taking forever ... be glad they aren't doing it on Island time? Even the Starbucks on Maui moves on Island time. Two points of contention: 1. They don't take plastic for under $10, kinda kills the morning iced coffee and bagel generally falls in the under $5 range. 2. I forget the other. read more

City Feed has great sandwiches and is a great place to grab some pastry or coffee in the morning. I really like the japanese crackers they have. It is local to me, and I spend a lot of time there in and out. Three stars because it takes too damn long to get in and out of there. The staff are friendly (generally) if you are under 30, and the hipster thing with the staff is really annoying in the morning during rush hours and the place is full of commuters. It is also really difficulty when there is a long line and the staff is chatting it up with the locals and not moving the line along. I'm probably a crank but my God the staff in there can be difficult. read more

Its weird for me that so many people rave about this place. Its OK, at best. My biggest issue is that its EXTREMELY overpriced. I went to buy some chicken and it was $12!!! $12!!! That's about TWICE the price of Stop and Shop down the street! I know, I know, it was organic, free range chicken that people that feel guilt for eating meat can somehow feel better about, but COME ON. On the plus side, the coffee is really good, in my opinion probably the best in JP. So the stars are for that. As far as I'm concerned, this is the ONLY place in JP to get a good lunch. The made-to-order sandwiches are hearty and offer a nice variety for any palette or dietary restriction. I have tried just about every item on the menu and they all get a 10 out of 10. Service can be a little slow and disorganized, but what the Hell - for such a small space they put out an excellent product. Always call ahead and give it an extra 15 mins. and you will be just fine. A bag of salt and pepper ripplechips and an all natural root beer round out a perfect lunch every time! read more

I love so much about this place (the sandwiches are great, the hipster staff aren't just there to show off their tats; most of them are actually helpful and friendly) but one thing that needs some improvement is the quality of their produce. Although the tomatoes and avocados are reliably good, invariably, every time I think I've picked out a decent piece of fruit (as I did just a few minutes ago), I come home to find it mealy/dry and mostly inedible. If they brand themselves as a purveyor of organic, local produce, their produce buyer needs to step up his/her game a bit, especially considering the impending opening of Whole Foods nearby. I would so much rather support an independent establishment like City Feed (which does have so much going for it), but they are just as expensive as Whole Foods and the quality is often spotty. So, sad to say, I'll do my produce shopping at WF and my sandwich eating at City Feed. read more

I am in love with the #1: Smoked Turkey, Pesto, mayo, marinated red onion, smoked cheddar cheese, locally made red pepper relish, red leaf lettuce on an Iggy's brioche roll. I get no red onions, add avocado and press on focaccia. Add a drink and a bag of chips. Set for Life. Also a fan of #4: Prosciutto di Parma, Fresh mozzarella, tomato, fresh basil, extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt & pepper on an Iggy's baguette. I get it pressed. read more

Great little neighborhood market. The sandwiches aren't cheap, but they are awfully tasty. For a small space they have just about anything you might need on short notice. If they don't have it, they have clipboards hanging on every aisle where you can request something they don't carry. What a great idea! Close to the Stony Brook T station and chock full of just about everything you'd need and helpful, friendly staff. Don't forget to check out the recipe exchange box. The recipe for "Pot Brownies" is some of the funniest comedy I've ever read. read more

The best things about City Feed are the muffins (whoa Banana Walnut with the slices of banana baked on top), sandwiches, and coffee. The market is slightly pricey, but not ridiculous considering the emphasis on local, organic products and the small size. For convenience foods, it's a great place. I don't think the sandwiches are all that pricey, ranging from $5-$7, for the quality. The service can be irritating. There are a couple of staff members who are great, and a few who are a little too cool to move with any speed or stop their conversation to ring me up. The market is certianly a few steps up from chain convenience stores, but provides similar goods. read more

When I inquired whether they had WiFi, they said they "didn't want it", adding that I should talk to my neighbors. I try to give my money to small, local shops whenever I can, but the experience and cost here is just not worth it. The service is painfully slow, and the employees are not friendly. Sandwiches are average $10 and for a small iced coffee, $3. Some organic veggies and fruits for sale, but not much. And there were flies everywhere!
