Today, my son is on scholarship as a classical piano major at Roosevelt University in the heart of Chicago. Very similar to Lincoln Center in NYC, his dorm room has floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city and park. He is known at CSO, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and in his senior year is now preparing to audition for grad school with hopefully at least close to full ride. She's great at coming up with clearly illustrated ways of explaining and correcting any aspect of playing technique, and is able to zoom in and get really specific about what exactly needs to be adjusted. To give an example, in my very first lesson with Erin I already had a major breakthrough that significantly improved my bowing. She was able to call attention to an aspect of bowing posture that I had completely overlooked previously. Once she showed me how to engage my whole torso, every other aspect of my bowing movement became much more fluid and relaxed. She was also able to easily adapt her pedagogy to my level of violin playing experience relative to my age and overall musical fluency level. As a 26 year old who is very new to violin (mostly self-taught with only a handful of prior lessons) while also being an experienced musician who is fluent in music theory and an advanced player of other (non-string) instruments, I would expect that my needs as a student are somewhat peculiar for the average violin teacher. Regardless, I felt like Erin was able to meet me exactly at the level I was at. I attempted to call so many times and it was impossible to get in touch with the right location and no one can help you when it comes to billing. This caused me to get dressed, while being injured, and head to this location to cancel my classes before they hit me with cancelation fees or I lost my money. We put my classes on hold because they do not offer refunds. I asked for a refund but they said when I got better I could go back and take the classes. I was in an arm slink for 3 months, when the time came that I was ok the last thing on my mind was going back to the classes. I forgot about this and then about a year later, I went to PY Rock asking if I can get a refund or take guitar lessons instead. I got told that they will contact management and get back to me. They never did. Now I went back today, another year later, to ask for a refund because they have my money for something I never used. I have stopped playing instruments as I did. They brought it up to the owner and he said because there has been so much time since he will not offer a refund. From the get the structure of how the billing is done sounded sketchy. You have to pay for the month in full but if you were to cancel your membership you have to do it prior to the first day of the month otherwise you will be charged another month before they let you cancel. Lastly, while I am rating this place with a low score, I will say that the instructors are very friendly and show that they care. This is more of an PSA on how the backend works. Not sure how effect this review will be but I sure do hope it saves someone else the headache.
