Worst nail service I have ever experienced. The room was absolutely filthy and I had to rip off all of the tips after I left the building, leaving me with no nails for my bridal event the following morning. It took 3.5 hours and I couldn't even get to the pedicure since they were closing in 10 minutes. Thankfully I called the very friendly staff and they provided a full refund. I'm sure their hair experience is much better but I just don't think they should offer nail services after my visit here. read more

I scheduled a haircut with a stylist that cost $65. There were other stylist that were less expensive but I figured I wanted someone more experienced for this cut. I don't usually get my hair done at salons and I figured Rumors would be a fancier place to get a hair cut and get pampered. I had my hair done there a long time ago and at that time, I got a hair consultation before getting the cut and the girl was very good. I left there really loving my hair, but it his time, when the stylist called my name she immediately took me to get my hair washed and there was no consultation. As we were walking to the sink she asked me what I was getting done and I said I wanted to cut about 4 inches in the back and get curtain bangs and as I'm explaining how I wanted it, she cuts me off and goes yeah ok a cut and curtain bangs. So then she washed my hair and brought me to her chair. She cuts the 3-4 inches in the back super fast and then takes a few strands on the front of my face and cuts them straight across. I tell her the pieces are too thin and I wanted more hair to frame my face so then against her will she kinda takes a bit more hair and then again cuts it straight. Now, I have had curtain bangs before both done professionally and also cut by myself after watching tutorials and when you cut curtain bangs you do it in a layered way. Smaller on the inside and gradually longer to the outside so the fall across the cheek kind of a cascade. She just cut mine straight across. No layered look. No cascade. I literally could have done better myself at home but again, I wanted to get it done by a professional so they look even better than what I could do myself. This stylist looked rushed like she couldn't wait to get me off her chair. Once the cut was done, she proceeded to blow dry my hair but she never sectioned my hair to blow dry it. At every single other salon I've been to, every time they blow dry the hair, they always section it and put those sections up so they can dry the hair properly. This lady was just taking big chunks of my hair without sectioning it and blow drying it so fast and hard she was done in like 5 mins and I have thick hair so part of my hair still felt moist underneath. I never thought that going to a Salon like rumors, which can be much more expensive than other places and choosing a more experienced stylist, that I would leave the salon in much worse shape than anything I could've done myself at home. I guess it's time to find a better salon that doesn't make me feel like I'm bothering them when I tell them what I want to get done!! read more

I am not one to embrace change easily. As such, with the change of Rumors ownership, I was concerned that service and the familiarity I had enjoyed for decades would change to the detriment of what I had been accustomed to. I am happy to say that in this instance the transition was seamless. My stylist, Perry Villas, was wisely retained and continues to work wonders with my very abundant Mediterranean hair. He makes sure that my time at Rumors is relaxing - a get away from the pressures that engulf the demands of our time. The staff is also charming and willing to extend themselves to ensure a relaxing and pleasant spa experience. UPDATE: 2 months later, and no one from the salon ever contacted my son or myself. Clearly that response was written simply to counteract my negative review and to try to paint the salon in a consumer-friendly light. Not that we wanted another haircut from Rumors- it cost us $32 in Uber fares getting back and forth from campus and we weren't willing to give this salon another shot. BUT the salon didn't know that and they didn't even offer to fix it like they said they would. What they should have done is offer a refund once they saw that Mike was incapable of delivering a satisfactory result (or maybe not charge us at all!) My experience didn't go further then a "consultation". I booked an appointment for a wash and set, a trim, and flat ironing my hair. I'll leave the stylist out because I really can't rate her on a job she didn't do. However, I didn't get any of the above mentioned because despite mentioning my hair type and informing them that 1hr was not enough time. I still ended up walking out unsatisfied. The stylist said she was not able to do my hair in the way I wanted within the allotted time so the most she can do is cut it. This place came highly recommended and I wanted to love it but, I don't know that they managed this appointment well. This was a first impression for me... not very impressed. Update. I was long overdue with grown out layers, split ends, etc. She was great with our consultation and recommended the right cut for my face shape. We had great conversation while she cut and styled and I left very happy! I have a wedding coming up in 16 days: I had an appointment scheduled for a cut and color at 2 pm on Friday. I received a text today with confirming my appointment FOR THE WRONG TIME. I called and was told that my hair dresser changed her schedule so they switched my appointment! They said they called and left messages 3 times which I never received. The attitude of the receptionist was- "Do you want to reschedule?" This is the second time I've had an issue with this business regarding appointments and poor communication. I came here for a pedicure and a haircut. My husband hot a massage and a haircut. The pedicure was soothing. The stylist who did my hair was really nice. My hair is easy to take care of, but it was nice to get the shampoo after to get all the shorn hair washed away. The absolute worst experience at a spa. I will never go back. On June 25th I had an appointment for a Thai Massage and Hydrafacial. When I arrived I was scooped up by the massage therapist who took me to a room with a massage table. I was very confused because I've had several Thai massages from Thailand to NYC, Brooklyn, Kripalu in the Berkshires. Thai massages are NEVER on a massage table. Thai massages are always performed on the floor on a thin mattress. When I asked the massage therapist why she was leading me to a room with a massage table she said not to worry that she would stretch me just like a Thai massage. That's impossible. You can't properly perform a Thai massage on a massage table. She said to make it up to me she'd add hot stone which I later found out that she charged me for. So I basically got a really poor swedish massage (which I didn't want otherwise I would have booked a swedish massage) and was overcharged. Wait, there's more. The Hydrafacial was good, but no extractions were done. I've had a ton of Hydrafacials at very reputable spas in NYC. They do extractions. The products the facialist used were so heavy that coupled with no extractions AND the heavy product, I broke out in a really bad rash of pustules all over my face. It's takes me a few months going back and forth to NYC to my derm to help the breakout. I called Rumors to speak to the manager. She was very crass (which didn't surprise me). She said that Rumors was in the process of changing management and that they have to update the site. Well it's months later and the site still lists the Thai massage. The manager has the audacity to tell me that she'd give me a free massage and facial the next time I come back. Seriously? Girlfriend I am never going back to your broken down spa! I was told by other spa business owners in the area that this is not a surprise with Rumors. My mother told me not to go because they ruined her hair and I didn't listen. I just moved upstate after living in NYC for 25+ years and just wanted something close. Serves me right. I should know better. You can't expect NYC perfection up in this area I guess. Way overpriced. I had color and a blowout and it was 190.00. The first time I went, I had a haircut as well, so I didn't think the price was too much. This time, no haircut, and a blowout which quickly disappeared due to the torrential downpour. When I called, the Vice President was less than accommodating when she explained the breakdown. Definitely not a spa experience and not worth the price. Dear Cheri: Thank you so much for responding and offering a free blowout. With that being said, I want to clarify that it wasn't about the unexpected weather, but rather the very high price I paid for the service. Also, the spa is undergoing some pretty significant remodeling and the ambience of the salon was less than desirable because of this. This salon is among the best in the capital district providing any service you could ask for from mani/pedis w/ a massage to hair and makeup. I have been here three times for hair services and have had a great time with each my stylists. Booking and reservations are made so easy with amazing receptionists and the wait is very minimal before your appointment. I have been a customer at Rumors for MANY years. While I will agree with some other reviewers that the services at the salon are certainly not cheap, I have always been more than pleased with the services I receive from my stylist, Danielle. I will note, there have been some issues with the front desk staff since the salon has been taken over by Tuscan Sun. They are not always the most responsive or understanding, and sometimes seem to forget that this is a customer based industry. However, because I want to focus this review on my exceptional stylist, I am not factoring that into my stars awarded. I have been getting my hair done by Danielle for probably over ten years at this point. Danielle is incredibly talented, and always has positive energy while performing services on me. She knows my schedule doesn't always works with her, and she does her best to accommodate given our longstanding relationship. My color and cut always gets compliments from friends as well as strangers, and it is a testament to Danielle's sheer talent and skill. Admittedly, I have been long overdue to write this review because I don't want to share Danielle with others, but she deserves all the hype. I would follow Danielle anywhere, and her talent is second to none if you have light colored hair and/or longer hair. I come here fairly regularly for blow outs because they're very accommodating - open daily with long hours (I'm even able to book appointments for 6 pm after I get out of work). Even when I call super last minute, they've always been able to fit me in at my desired day & time so I know I can always depend on them which is awesome. Because I frequently call last minute, I've had to be flexible on the stylist so I've tried many different stylists here; every single one has given me a wonderful blow out. Have I preferred some stylists to others? Of course, but you also can't go wrong no matter who you choose. Every stylist I've encountered has given me a great blow out that has lasted a week. I had a friend recommend this salon to me and my wife went here for her birthday. Had balayage done and the hair dresser did an awful job blending in the color up towards the roots. The blonde looked so choppy next to the roots you could see how it was painted on. The visit was so rushed, for $250 it should not feel rushed and at that point you are paying for the experience not just the color. They can't blow dry your hair or style it because of covid. Wife went back the next day to get it fixed and you can't tell a difference! Would rather go to Ulta they do a much better job for cheap compared to this place. Will never be back again. read more

***This review is for the spa only*** I wasn't sure quite what to expect from this stand alone salon and spa in the middle of suburbia, but in the end, I guess it's just what you would expect. I think the overall experience comes at more like 3.5* but I enjoyed my massage so I rounded up. I appreciate their amenities although they are somewhat "downscaled," if you would. They offer a peaceful reflection lounge right outside the ladies' changing room which hosts water, trail mix, nuts, apples and tea as well as a couple of chairs and 2 chaises to sit and relax. They offer a sauna which fits one comfortably, maybe 2 (?) sitting side by side? I was told there was a steam shower but it didn't seem to be working that day as nothing happened when I pressed the buttons per instructions... maybe next time. Amenities aside, some of the experience was slightly awkward beginning from check in. No one was at the "check-in" counter and I wasn't actually checked in just taken to the lounge area by one of the staff. I waited there a few minutes for my masseuse with the relaxing mood lighting and musak. I opted for a scrub and a massage. The scrub was slightly awkward (in a "we don't really do this very often" kind of of way) so I'll probably skip that one next time. I chose the aromatherapy massage which was quite soothing and she did a great job with the pressure. I was impressed with the value for the services a 60 min massage runs just about $80! It's not dirt cheap but you get your money's worth. read more

While my hairstylist here was lovely (she has since left), I was put off by my experience here when one of the owner's interrupted my scheduled hair appointment so that she could have my hair dresser put glitter tassels in her twin daughters hair. The owner did not apologize or ask if this was okay. I had to wait 25 minutes while my hairdresser reluctantly made me, her CLIENT, wait to get my hair dried and cut while she did this. An owner should not be taking away time from a paying customer for something like this. Very rude and disrespectful to their client. read more

Honestly, these people are ridiculous! Don't get me wrong gorgeous salon, gorgeous spa, and MOST of the staff are amazing. But managers force their reception girls to push products on anyone checking out. As well as "pre-booking" . It's obnoxious and annoying when they constantly try to force product and a next appointment on you. I myself have heard the managers say ( very rudely might I add ) " make sure you're asking every guest to prebook " if a girl didn't say it right away or maybe forgot. That's ridiculous. If we want to buy product we will if we want to prebook we will. I feel if we as clients don't bring it up we shouldn't be asked EVERY SINGLE time. I went to Rumors for a number of years. I am so happy I have broken this habit. Many of the stylists are in fact very talented, in fact I was very happy with the one I had gone to for a number of years, but the feeling in here is just unwelcoming and uncomfortable. You feel like you are being rushed at all times in this place. The front desk people seem bothered at all times and like they have too much work and people to tend to. It is not welcoming and friendly in the least. It is also super crowded you feel like you're on top of everyone. I really have a problem with the operation. This was a typical visit-get rushed in, get washed by some random girl (never my stylist) then sit in the seat and get rushed through the cut and then blown dry by another random girl. It is a rush all the way through. The stylist is with you for however long it takes for your hair to be cut (and it isn't long). Sometimes they even book multiple people at the same time for the same stylist leaving you waiting and annoyed. It is a little on the expensive side as well, and I don't really think worth the extra you pay since it is so rushed and uncomfortable. I would not suggest Rumors to anyone who is looking for a relaxing hair salon. Also, I had the eyelash extensions put on here and after about three days they looked downright awful and my real lashes were coming out with the fake lashes. I called up literally crying because of this and they said there was nothing I could do. I ended up losing tons of lashes and was beside myself for weeks while they grew back in. Totally unhelpful. I knew a few other girls who had this same problem--so I would in no way suggest the eyelash extensions. Overall--skip it. Yes there is talent here but go somewhere where you feel relaxed and pampered, and not like cattle. read more

So I've only gotten my hair cut here once, I just don't think I'm cool enough to get my hair done here. This place has a high school "Mean Girls" kind of vibe. Every girl in the salon was rocking big hair and boots the day I got my haircut. A new hairstylist cut my hair for like $30, which is a fraction of what I used to pay before I moved. I got what I paid for, but I just wasn't feeling this place. It was a little snobbish for me. That being said, my husband gets his hair cut at the men's side and swears by this place. Review for Blow Out Bar: I came with my friend's bridal party to Rumors' blow out bar (called Voilà) to have our hair done for the wedding. I felt $35 (plus required 20% tip we were required to each pay when booking the group) for a blow out was pretty steep (additional fee for curls), but didn't mind the price for the special occasion. They put us in a back room all to ourselves (outfitted with pink chairs). We each had our own stylist. Although a pricy blowout, I will say it was a really nice blow out. My stylist listened to what I wanted, and managed to give my somewhat fine hair some volume without giving me the dreaded "poof." Each of the women in the bridal party who had their hair styled ended up looking very nice -- from the mother of the bride, who has a short bob-style haircut, to a bridesmaid with very curly hair. So, while the Rumors' blowout bar is too pricy to be a frequent indulgence, it'll be nice to keep it in mind for special occasions! The only other drawback is that some in our party overheard some stylists speaking in a catty way about another stylist. I find that to be unprofessional, and think that personal business like that --especially of a "mean girls" nature -- shouldn't be discussed in front of clients. read more

Major kudos to Kolby. I refuse to get my hair done in NYC and make a point of stopping by Rumors whenever I'm visiting family in the area. A few points: 1.) I love the new building - the spa-like atmosphere is great and I love how clean everything is. 2.) The prices are great. Wash, cut and style for $25. Seriously? You could always chose a stylist at a higher level, but I'm very impressed by mine, which leads into my 3rd point: 3.) Kolby is great. I have an angled bob that needs attention often. She is the only stylist I've seen who can give me exactly what I ask for. She fully listens and asks questions as we go. You can feel the energy and effort she puts into each cut. I really appreciate that. Plus, she's super easy to talk to which makes the time fly by. I'll continue to go here as long as I have family in the area. I much prefer the environment at Rumors to the pretentious, artsy salons in the city. read more

My husband has his hair cut here and always sees Stacey, who does a consistently excellent job. While the cuts are expensive, my positive reaction after every appointment seems to be worth the extra $20 to him. Getting an appointment is easy, there's an ATM for folks who need cash for tipping, and he's in and out of there in about a half hour, looking like a proper gentleman. I have my hair done next door at Rumors, so coordinating haircuts is pretty simple and we grab dinner afterwards at one of the nearby restaurants. read more

I went there for the first time last year for a color and cut. I have brown even hair color and I wanted it a red tinge throughout. She left the color in for the roots WAY too long, making the top half of my head look fire engine red. She tried to tell me it was the lighting and it would eventually fade away. After a few days the ends faded out leaving the top just red. I called up and complained, I came back and she did a treatment to strip the color (but she said that it didn't strip my hair, I dont remember the name of the treatment). This left my hair feeling like a sticky, messy pile of straw for a couple months after I washed my hair. When I gently untangled it, blew it out and straighten it looked good, but it didn't feel like my hair anymore(not to mention that I still had a slight shade of pink around the top of my head). Worst salon experience I ever had. At least they offered to fix it for free. Ugh. read more

I really like this place despite several drawbacks. Pros: Price is really decent; very clean, warm and comfortable. Cons: The staff is very fake nice, transparently so; they will change the person you see without telling you until you get there; never on time for appointments; not really sure if your artist wants you to come back to them. I've gone to Rumors twice now for my nails. The first time I made an appointment for a manicure before leaving town for the weekend, I was on a pretty strict schedule and was trying to squeeze this in. The technician was 30 minutes late for my appointment, while I was 15 minutes early. When she finally came out I told her I didn't know if I had time to do this now. She offered to just do a polish change and offered me a free manicure at a later date. Totally saved my experience from being terrible with this. She did a quick shaping and cuticle trim, put on my french tips and I was out of there in 30 minutes, barely made it to where I needed to be but it was a nice save. I made an appointment with the same girl for my free manicure only to arrive and find out she was not there and they scheduled me with someone else. No one called me to see if this was ok, nor did they really seem to care that I was not happy about this. This girl was just as good but I felt like the "polish change" was more in depth than the actual manicure this time. No hot towel, that's my favorite part! This girl also did not want to do what I asked her, she wanted to use a pink undertone instead of clear. I let her and I even liked it until she went over the white with it, now I have pink nail tips... I will probably continue to come here because it is right around the corner from my job, the prices are still really good regardless of the shortcomings in other areas and I really do like the salon. I will proabbly not make an appointment with anyone in particular next time as I haven't found a nail tech I love yet. I am considering trying other services as well like the massages, I'm just afraid of a horrible experience based on what I've already seen. read more

I had my hair done for a formal once and I had this one girl I didn't know do it. I looked like Charlie Chaplin! Did they give me the receptionist to do it. I was so appalled that I didn't know what to say and just paid the girl and walked out! I didn't know what to say and the more the girl tried to FIX the hair cut... the WORSE IT GOT! So if you go I would not go with a $35 hair stylist. I lucked out when John was at that rate but I think its because he's "fabulous". However, the last I knew he was over $100 for a hair cut now. My fiance purchased us a couples massage gift certificate for Rumors. On the first attempt I called and made the appointment for our 80 minute hot stone massage, we arrive the day of our appointment, the check-in was awkward. They never asked us who we were, we just told them we had an appointment for a couples massage and they pointed where to go and sit. The masseuses came out to get us and guided us on where we to change and get our massages. Before we were to get our massages, one of the masseuses said' "Are you two ready for your 50 minute massages??????" WHAT???? I told them NO, they are suppose to be 80 minute hot stone massages. They said, it must of been the new girl who took the reservation and they only had time for a 50 minute massage. OK, we decided to have that done and I paid out of pocket for this, so we could save the gift cert and get what we paid for later. The massages were great but after they were done, they took us to the shower area so we could shower and clean up. First bad thing was all the flip flops that are suppose to be clean were thrown all over the floor and mismatched, the steam shower was broke and in the shower the containers for shampoo, soap and conditioner were all empty. This is experience #1 We decided to give Rumors another try, so we could use our 80 minute hot stone couples massage gift cert. We arrive for our appointment and again just pushed off to a waiting room, never offered water, tea or anything. The masseuses arrive and again we are told that we were only scheduled for a 50 minute massage. WE complain and tell them this is the second time they have messed up and we want a refund. The acting manager that day comes out and says again that a new girl took our reservation and put the wrong massage in but they will comp us one of the massages. My fiance asked how long of a massage would be comped, she replies a 50 minute massage. Our gift cert were for 80 minute massages and you only were going to comp a 50 minute massage. That's a 30 minute difference!!!!!! We demanded our money back and WILL NEVER GIVE RUMORS another chance!!!!! read more

Since I pass for 15 on a good day, and I now have a Big Girl Job, I thought it was time to work on my appearance. I've been here to get a facial, a massage and my hair cut and colored. I've been delighted with all the staff that i've interacted with - they take the time to listen to your concerns and what you're looking for. I'm a total pizza face for various reasons, and the esthetician was happy to walk me through my various face problems and how she was going to treat them. She did try to sell me a load of stuff, but it wasn't a hard sell and I did end up buying a few things. I came out with my skin looking refreshed and happy. My massage was great. I like to lift heavy and was having some residual back soreness and she worked it right out. Their massage rooms play some cheesy panflute music but I was too spaced from the pleasure of the massage to care. Kayleigh did my hair. This was the first time I've ever had highlights done and I was nervous. I told her what I wanted and she guided me to something that wouldn't make me look like bozo. The hair cut, dye and foils came out great and she offered to have me come back for a complimentary blow dry and style to see other ways I can style my hair. My past experiences with Rumors has been nothing but great, HOWEVER, my appointment today completely changed my opinion. I called in to schedule for my regular hairstylist, and they told me I have an appointment with my regular. I was running late so I called them to let them know i'm almost there. They put me on hold and told me they'll let my hairstylist know I'm running late, and came back saying he'll wait for me. I got there, greeted by a complete new hairstylist that i've never had. Mind you, no one told me why I got a different person and i even had them telling me multiple times that i was gonna see my regular. i just think it's kinda disrespectful that i never got an explanation, and i schedule my regular hairstylist for a reason.
