I want to give a big shout to this shop before it decamps for Beaverton. Rune & Board came into Hillsboro at a time when Hillsboro retail didn't cater to anyone under the age of, oh, 55 and certainly didn't address the interests of broad swaths of the city's population. R&B made it clear that not only were there a ton of gamers in the area whose needs weren't being addressed whatsoever, but that a knowledgeable staff and a stable space were all that was needed to give that community a home. Also, to be so inclusive of women that my longtime gamer buddy's wife was stunned when she walked in and was not only one of several women in the building, but the only one not actively buying or playing... that's how you start to need double the space. I'll admit, I don't like seeing this place go and I'm not a fan of the trend I'm seeing. We lost the town's only bookstore to Beaverton. Retro Game Store's gaming club and Gongali also moved from west of 185th to Beaverton. If Hillsboro and Forest Grove can't find the space for businesses like these--the ones that actually build communities, create third spaces, and encourage people here to join in and become part of something--they're going to keep losing both business and interest to Beaverton, Portland, and other places that are generally more encouraging. Thank you for my cherished copy of King of Tokyo, more Warhammer gifts than I likely should've purchased my friend, and all of the hours you set up shop for your regulars and newcomers. You're some of the good guys in Downtown Hillsboro, and the place will be less welcoming in your absence. read more

This is a wonderful little game shop. I love that they host so many events - I regularly attend their D&D Adventures League games and all have been good experiences. I feel welcome and comfortable here. They have a bunch of board games, of course plenty of dice, a whole section for minis, and most importantly very friendly and helpful staff. It can get a bit loud when there are multiple events at the same time but that's the only down-side I can think of. Also worth noting, they are still requiring masks for customers, which makes the in-person gaming easier to attend (especially for those with immuno-compromised loved ones). It's not often I come across a business that inspires me to write a review, but Rune & Board truly deserves the recognition. The storefront is well-stocked, organized and clean, prices are reasonable with generous sales from time to time and service is always excellent. The owner is the perfect example of what an ideal hobby shop owner should be. He is helpful, honest (provides great recommendations-even to other hobby shops that might be of interest to his customers), doesn't hard sell or overprice products, is personable, welcoming and genuinely cares about his employees, customers and community. This is apparent from the fact that masks are required and actually enforced-which makes for a safe environment for people who may be immunocompromised (or have loved ones who are). Rune & Board is a small but well stocked game store, conveniently located in downtown Hillsboro for all your board game and card game (Magic, Pokemon, etc.) needs. They offer different game nights throughout the week, including a Magic pauper deck night, which piqued my partner's interest. We've been in here a few times to browse the board games and have come back with a few items from our lists (Wingspan, Crew, The Initiative, Viticulture...) While it's not as big as Rainy Day Games, they can order games for you and the staff have always been friendly. They've had some great Christmas deals too - one time I stopped in and they were doing buy 2 get one free on board games! This is a great addition to the downtown Hillsboro retail community and I look forward to checking out their game nights when COVID cools down a bit. read more

From past experiences, I do not trust local game stores. But the owner at this one truly shocked me. He is incredibly intuitive and provides superb customer service. This truly seems to be a passion of his and it shows through is honesty and integrity. Thanks to a wasted youth playing D&D, I have a dice addiction. Rune and Board has loads of awesome dice, from several different dice companies. I always find dice that simply must be added to my collection. However, even better than the dice, is the customer service at Rune and Board. As a woman who plays RPGs, TCG, and 40K I'm often treated really poorly by staff at game shops who think I'm invading "their space". I popped into this shop to pick up a present for someone and was really happy I did. The staff member who helped me (owner? Not sure) was incredibly polite and helpful and never once treated me weird for being a girl. He helped me pick out the perfect present for the DM who has everything, and we've been back already to pick up some stuff for us. Definitely will be back. read more

I love that this shop exists in Hillsboro. Some friends told us about Rune & Board (clever name), so we made a point of going there. The store is split into two areas, the for sale section and the gaming area. The gaming area is definitely the larger of the two. They have game nights on Tuesdays I believe and you can bring your own games! The games they have for sale are fewer by far than Rainy Day, but it's actually refreshing. You are not overwhelmed by the number of games to choose from. The gentleman behind the counter said this allows them to be more choosy on what they sell. He was also happy to answer any questions we had about any game or was willing to look up the answer if he didn't know. It seemed that all the games had over 7+ ratings on boardgamegeeks.com. Always a plus. I would assume they will order a specific game if you request it, but I didn't ask. Come here to buy games! We need more cool stores downtown and I want R&B to stay! read more

Great little game store in the area; like much of Hillsboro it feels quaint and homey. It makes me wish we had something similar closer to home. The person who rang me up for my simple set of dice and new paint brush was obviously knowledgeable and loved games--just the type of person who should be working in such a place. read more

Visited this store for the first time today. Honestly can't believe I only just found out about it. Absolutely lovely staff and a fantastic location. Store was clean and neatly organized, and had a great selection. I'm a pretty new player and tend to buy my stuff online, but I'm definitely going here from now on!
