That's roughly $25 per modern pack--for cards that aren't vintage, scarce, or anything remotely special. There's a difference between running a business and shamelessly exploiting hype, and this shop clearly knows exactly what it's doing. That's not "market pricing," that's blatant price gouging aimed at the people least likely to know better. Card shops are supposed to build community and help grow the hobby, especially for kids. Instead, this place feels more interested in squeezing every possible dollar out of excited young collectors and their parents. It's hard to call yourself a community shop when you're pricing families out of the hobby. If your business model depends on overcharging kids and parents who don't know better, that says everything people need to know. Even their video games are priced way more than even EBay prices.

The name got my attention cause if you notice it's not "Star Wars Store", and the store itself didn't disappoint. Not sure how long the store has been in this location, but it dates back to 1999 and has both vintage and new collectibles and toys. It was so much fun to walk through the aisles and check everything out. The atmosphere is casual and fun and no pressure to buy. I went twice while in town and enjoyed browsing. Prices are reasonable for the collectables, and the staff are super friendly and happy to chat. If you are in the area, go take a look! I saw Star Wars, Marvel, Masters of the Universe, G.I. Soon after, we hopped in the car and started to head out of town for a shortish afternoon driving trip up the Columbia River. However, all the Kid really wanted to do was stay home, and just a few blocks from the house we had a rebellion on our hands. As a diversion, we offered to first take him to his favourite card store, so he could show it to us and hang out a bit. Other Worlds Games a neat community game store, generally located in my son's SW Portland neighbourhood. They're the "mecca" for Magic: the Gathering tournaments, singles and card supplies; Warhammer and Games Workshop products; Warmachine/Hordes and Privateer Press products; Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, Dice and RPG supplies; Adventure and Family Boardgames, gaming tables, terrain tables with lots of terrain pieces available for your use, and in-store gaming events. In fact we walked in during a Sunday afternoon card tournament and were greeted warmly by Ron, who knows my son very well. My son's sister and her husband (D&D fans) also hang out here, which was also evidenced by a few crochet pieces that she had donated to the shop. My son was proud and happy to show us around and we enjoyed his hospitality. And after one more neighbourhood stop at Paint Pots, the Kid was happy again and ready to humor us as we proceeded on our afternoon adventure.

Oh, I don't go inside, I wait in the car scrolling my socials and taking selfies and then ooh and ah over his purchases while he explains refractors and grading and colors and bits of bats or jerseys. I'm sure he says other stuff...The Sportsroom has had a few different owners and the latest has been there for over a year. After taking a long break between owners, we're back to visiting about every week. It is nice to see someone who seems to enjoy what they're doing who genuinely wants to make visits to the Sportsroom a positive experience.

One of the older employees wrote numbers on sticky notes and placed them on my cards. He offered me $600 for a stack worth around $1,000, so I politely declined. Immediately after, he aggressively ripped the sticky notes off my cards, walked away, and completely ignored me. He didn't say another word or even look at me. On my way out, I still said "thanks," but got no response. It's sad to see people like this representing the hobby. If you're looking to trade cards or buy boxes, I'd recommend going somewhere else. Hoody's, 1 Stop, and Orb all have much better customer service than this place. This business does not deserve your cards or your money.

Waited a few days and finally got an offer on my cards. Offer was ridiculously low. I said no thanks, I'll come get my cards. As soon as I said I wasn't interested Steve was rude over the phone. Tried arguing with me about the value of the cards, their condition, etc. I told him I wasn't interested in arguing and would simply come get my cards. Went in an hour later and Lo and behold, some were missing. I mentioned this to Steve. I noticed his hands were obviously shaking. As soon as I said something about the missing cards he got extremely defensive. He acted like I had accused him directly (which I did not, I understand mistakes sometimes happen). He then tried to escalate the situation, raising his voice in the crowded store and yelling at me in front of dozens of people. It was Friday night, they were hosting a game night. Steve continued to yell at me, even as I walked out. Unprofessionalism, cards disappearing, and insultingly low offers seem to be par for the course, judging by the reviews. I'll be going to Guardian Games from now on.

That said, these guys always had everything I needed--controls, new track, extensions--and always had product I could inspect. No shipping/return ping-pong with online sellers. But what I've grown to love best about them is their outright disdain for the lowest form of "hobbyist": The drone bro. Call it a "multicopter" all you'd like, pal, but your cheap piece of plastic trash is, at best, flying camera gear and, at worst, a suburban air rights debate just waiting to be solved in the most hostile way possible. I'm pleased that Hillsboro Hobby has never catered to these plugs, and I wish them continued success in selling the exact type of anti-air countermeasures that make these guys think twice about flying them over residential areas.
